It's crying time. Well, not always, but if you scrape your knee it can be really upsetting. There are a lot of things that go on when you scrape your knee aside from the Band-Aid and a tad of antiseptic ointment you slap on it. Your body immediately begins to heal itself as "different parts of your body work together as a team" to stem the flow of blood and repair you knee. The five "superheroes" involved in this particular process are platelets, skin cells, blood cells, macrophages and nerve cells.
As you learn about this amazing process, you will also see some amazing photomicrographs that were "taken with a scanning electron microscope (SEM)." Once you scrape that knee you lose skin cells that need to be replaced and repaired. Of course you're going to know they're missing when your nerve cells scream to your brain, traveling more than 200 miles an hour, to let you know. When you shed some blood some capillaries or blood vessels are torn and these also are in need of repair. The whole thing can be a big mess, but you'll learn just how your body repairs itself. You learn about and see photographs of blood cells, platelets, fibrin, cell division, staphylococcus and rod-shaped bacteria (YUK!), germ multiplication and macrophages. AND you'll be told to disinfect that scrape and put on that Band-Aid!
This is an excellent way to painlessly introduce microbiology. The photomicrographs are fantastic and the cartoon superheroes will nudge even the most reluctant reader through the book to the end. In the back of the book is a glossary, an index and additional recommended book and internet resources. This is one in a series of six Body Battlefields books. If you have a body battle, you might as well know what's going on!

Ouch! You know that a skinned knee hurts. But did you know that it's the start of a battle? Your body has to work quickly to protect you from a germ invasion. Nerve cells sound an alarm that you're hurt. Blood cells rush in to fight germs that come in through the scrape. And skin cells make brand-new skin for your knee. Before you know it, your cells have won the battle and you're as good as new. Get a close look at this body battle with comic illustrations and ground-breaking photomicrographs. The photomicrographs magnify the actual cellular processes tens of thousands of times, offering you a front-row seat for all the action.--This text refers to the Library Binding edition.

Prayer Changes Teens: How to Parent from Your Knees

This is a terrific book. Janet McHenry knows from what she writes and uses her real life examples of raising her own teens and teaching teenagers in her writing. From the first pages, where she describes that awful feeling when you first realize your child is not behaving the way you thought he was, to the real, concrete, useful suggestions on how to handle all kinds of situations (drugs, dating, lying, dress, etc.) this book hits the mark. Not to be trite, but I laughed, I cried...and I prayed. The suggestions for prayer are real, and from the gut. It is a book you can buy by the dozen and hand them out to all your friends and they will be enternally grateful. It is that good, and that useful. Here is the answer to "but what can you do?" about your children. Thank you, Janet.

This is the original version of Franklin Jones' (aka Adi Da) autobiography. It is a "classic" spiritual document, and I believe far superior to the later expanded editions, which are contexualized within the religious context of Adi Da as "the" God Incarnation. This original edition is shorter, direct, honest, and not at all pompous. Here, Jones is a seeker who arrived at the end of seeking through Self Realization, after having assumed discipleship under Swami Muktananda. His realization led to his arriving at an original "way" of understanding the spiritual search and spiritual experieinces. When this book was written, Jones did not view or portray himself as an "avatar", but rather as a "Man of Understanding". This book is a fascinating account of the spiritual path, and I believe at par with Autobiography of a Yogi (by Paramahansa Yogananda)in its significance.

Human Race Get Off Your Knees: The Lion Sleeps No More Review

Human Race Get Off Your Knees: The Lion Sleeps No More
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Icke is one of the very few conspiracy whistleblowers who has developed a relatively advanced spiritual awareness from which he can provide a useful context and understanding of the material he has uncovered. He always puts forward an intriguingly different way to view the world, far from what is taught in schools and "higher" education (much of which is so boring because it is just not true).
Chapters 14-19 propound new and amazing information and the rest of the book overlaps with his previous works and newsletters, refining and updating his analysis of the many facets and details of the conspiratorial nature of civilization, as well as the physics and metaphysics underlying our reality.
Yes, much of the book reprises - in hugely believable detail, with many new facts and those reviewed from previous books - all his old themes: Illuminati hybrid bloodlines, reptilians & ETs, mind control, satanic rituals, the global political and economic machinations, secret societies, the assault on our health and ability to use higher consciousness, and much more. This is understandable, since a great deal of what Icke has predicted over the last two decades has come horribly true. He makes it easy to see through the craziness in governments at all levels - local, national and international - and to understand what is coming next (tighter and tighter controls, installed step by tiny step) and why - but this subject is available in Icke's previous books.
His "both new and different" material is mainly sandwiched in the middle of the book. In chapters 18 and 19 in particular, Icke introduces groundbreaking information going well beyond his previous books: I was hopeful, moved, even enthralled. Icke addresses the subject of how humanity was driven out of paradise and into slavery, as well as, in the last 30 pages of the book, the initial steps of how we can start to recover what we lost. What we experience here is similar to watching a movie in that we cannot alter the experience unless what is being projected onto the screen is changed - and those who currently control our world are terrified of this possibility and of our magnificent powers, currently hidden from us by the blinders "they" have created.
Oh yes, Icke reveals hidden reality, in an admirably clear and understandable way, and also includes fascinating recent scientific research in support. This book is a big step forward, going where few (if any) have gone before, with some truly original content.
And, for ways out of our enslavement, I recommend the introductory book "Freedom" by Veronica Chapman and Marc Stevens' "Adventures in Legal Land". More advanced is Menard's wonderful "With Lawful Excuse" available as an ebook for $16 from the WorldFreemanSociety, but you can first have a free look on youtube at Menard's "Bursting Bubbles of Government Deception" to see if the book is likely to interest you. If possible, "With Lawful Excuse" is even better than his videos. I also recommend that you get the "prequel", a book also called "Bursting Bubbles of Government Deception" and costing about $5.50, also from the WorldFreemanSociety, which provides the basics needed to get to grips with "With Lawful Excuse".
"Adventures in Legal Land" by Stevens is good too but watch Winston Shrout's DVDs to learn why Stevens usually fails in court. Some of these books refer to English or Canadian law, but all countries in the common wealth and those that have British law as their foundation, like the USA, also employ the same systematic trickery uncovered here. Robinson's "Commercial Redemption" followed by "Hardcore Redemption-in-Law" are the best so far in explaining how to take back the benefit of the millions raised (without your knowledge) via your birth certificate so that you never again have to pay taxes or penalties or fines.
Also have a look at Google Videos & You Tube, search for Raymond St Clair, the strawman illusion, the antiterrorist on dealing with police, bursting bubbles, etc, etc. The videos of Raymond St Claire going into a local court and very politely distressing all the court officials on a fundamental point of law are priceless. The basis of Raymond St Claire's challenge and the reason for their distress is not clear in the videos but IS explained very well in "Title 4 Flag Says You're Schwag!" - namely that judges swear to uphold common law but they are actually sitting in a civil/statute law court where they have no power over you unless you agree (which we are always fooled into doing, because we don't know any better). Don't miss!
Be warned: there is a lot of complicated detail to understand first - you need to be very clear - otherwise peaceful resistance is dangerous, as the authorities will get you if you make even the smallest mistake, which is VERY easy to do. The procedures suggested are not always successful. For a sample of excellent and truly thought-through advice, try an internet search on "patriot mythology". The 2 books by The Antiterrorist offer highly intelligent information on this aspect.

Well, this will be short... The book covers everything you'll need to know to make REAL hooch, moonshine, "licker", etc. Whichever you call it, you'll know exactly the needed materials and methods to get the job done. Being an experienced brewer, I can tell you there are some pretty good (thou basic) recipes as well that'll get you started off in the right direction. After learning the basics, you'll be ready to venture off on your own in the recipe department and create virtually anything you can dream up. And as a passing point, if you get tired of making that ole 'Mountain Dew' and need to get to town, you can put that 'ole pot distiller' to use feedin' your work truck too. Lastly, the author really knows what he's talking about since he rates the other brewin books on the market in the back of his book, and I'd have to agree with his reviews since I've read many of the others as well. Here's to the freedom to create the drinks you like and to the "spirits" that's kept America goin' since before George Washington fired up his own personal still.
Cheers!

Was so inspired by the photographs in this book, I took it with me on one of my visits to Wounded Knee, to compare and photograph pictures from on or near the same place the photographer(s) did at that time, at the massacre site as well as the town itself. There are many pictures that I had not seen anywhere else in this book, and anyone interested in this place in history has got to have it. Textually very good as well.

On a wintry day in December 1890, near a creek named Wounded Knee on the Pine Ridge Reservation in South Dakota, the Seventh Cavalry of the U.S. Army opened fire on an encampment of Sioux Indians. This assault claimed more than 250 lives, including those of many Indian women and children. The tragedy at Wounded Knee has often been written about, but the existing photographs have received little attention until now.Eyewitness at Wounded Knee brings together and assesses for the first time some 150 photographs that were made before and immediately after the massacre. Present at the scene were two itinerant photographers, George Trager and Clarence Grant Morelodge, whose work has never before been published. Accompanying commentaries focus on both the Indian and the military sides of the story. Richard E. Jensen analyzes the political and economic quagmire in which the Sioux found themselves after 1877. R. Eli Paul considers the army's role at Wounded Knee. John E. Carter discusses the photographers and also the reporters and relic hunters who were looking to profit from the misfortune of others.
For this Bison Books edition each image has been digitally enhanced and restored, making the photographs as compelling as the event itself. Heather Cox Richardson tells the story behind the endeavor to present a meaningful account of this significant historical event.

I thought that this book contained an informative behind the scenes look at the orthopedic world. Although I believe that many are not out to simply get you in surgery, I'm sure there are a good portion that are and this book will give you cues on how to spot a happy cutting surgeon. This book will also awaken you to the fact that the doctor is merely a human being, sometimes making educated guesses into your condition.
I love the author's approach and direct writing style. This book gives some information about virtually any knee problem that can arise. Most likely it will affirm you to wait, try some exercises and see how it feels. It will also give you ideas on questions to ask the doctor, as well as give you a thorough understanding of the anatomy of the knee (as of 2002).

Circle of Greed: The Spectacular Rise and Fall of the Lawyer Who Brought Corporate America to Its Knees Review

Circle of Greed: The Spectacular Rise and Fall of the Lawyer Who Brought Corporate America to Its Knees
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Circle of Greed provides a fascinating account of the rise and fall one of the most famous--or infamous--class action lawyers, Bill Lerach. The book has many fine qualities. First, it is very interesting reading. Lerach has lived a colorful life, and Dillon and Cannon tell a heck of a story.
Second, because Lerach was so prominent in prosecuting class actions, the book provides a concise history of many of the most important cases of fraud in the financial industry over the last several decades, a history that could not be more timely. Dillon and Cannon do a wonderful job of explaining in clear and accessible terms some of the shenanigans in which corporate America has engaged. Those descriptions by themselves justify the price of the book.
Third, Circle of Greed offers a balanced account of class actions and their virtues and vices as a means of achieving justice. Lerach himself appears as a complicated character: a true believer who was so committed to his cause--and to winning--that he was willing to bend and even break the rules, leading to his incarceration.
As a law professor, I teach about and study class actions and complex litigation. Over the years I have learned that people's ideological commitments tend to shape their views of class action litigation rather than the other way around. As a result, Circle of Greed is likely to be a Rorschach test. Those who hate class actions may object that Dillon and Cannon fail to condemn Lerach in clear enough terms. Those who are enamored with class actions may think Dillon and Cannon were too tough on Lerach--or should have chosen a more sympathetic subject, a class action lawyer who acted more ethically. But those who read Circle of Greed with an open mind may learn a little bit about one man's story, as well as a bit about the strengths and weaknesses of class litigation. Dillon and Cannon just provide the facts. The reader has to decide what to do with them.

Walk Yourself Well: Eliminate Back Pain, Neck, Shoulder, Knee, Hip and Other Structural Pain Forever-Without Surgery or Drugs Review

Walk Yourself Well: Eliminate Back Pain, Neck, Shoulder, Knee, Hip and Other Structural Pain Forever-Without Surgery or Drugs
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I have spent the last five years in agony with a bad ankle. For some strange reason that I didn't understand at that time,(and neither did the two surgeons, one rhematologist, two podiatrists, four physical therapists and countless er docs with whom I consulted over the last thirty years), as I was doing my regular areobic work, I totally ruptured the peroneal longus tendon in my right foot. Two surgeries later I was left with a chronically swollen ankle. I had lost the tendon and the peroneal nerve. I had total ankle reconstruction and had my heel bone moved over so my ankle would be more stable. It wasn't.
Fast forward three years. The pain had increased and moved up into my back and hips. It was horrible. I couldn't sleep. My foot doc said, you will have to learn to live with it. I had an MRI. I had bulging discs in L1-2, 2-3 and 3-4. The 2-3 was pressing on the spinal cord. I was losing feeling and strength in my hips and legs despite doing all the weight lifting and cardio I could handle, about 90 minutes a day x 6 days a week.
I researched why this would happen. I had a gradual onset of the back issue and couldn't remember a specific incidence of over doing or strain. The title of this book popped up in reply to an internet search I did on the L2-3 disk bulge, so I ordered it.
I had gone to see an osteopath for help with the back issue and was in physical therapy for it. My pt noticed that during exercises my ankle bowed out. She said, "That's the problem."
I went home to find this book had come. I read it in two days and immediately began to do the work recommended. I took the book to the osteopath who agreed with the pt. That was about two weeks ago. I am now totally pain free for the first time in five years, and without pain meds. Not only are my right ankle, leg, hips and back good, but my left shoulder which also hurt most of the time no longer hurts.
It seems that due to my gait my ankles roll to the outside with every step. This resulted in atrophied ankle muscles, which meant more weakness. Finally my tendon blew. And then my spine. Thanks to the information this author presents in a humorous fashion I have finally accepted the cause for my problems and am working on relearning to walk. It isn't all that easy, but then it isn't impossible either, given the other choice. A number of members of my family have the same gait pattern. My father and older brother have both had horrific ankle problems, no one knew why. They both have had back surgery, and both have lost the L2-3 disc. Again, no one knew why. I have two sons in their twenties who walk like me and who have had ankle problems and back pain since their late teens. I am buying copies of this book for them.
Using this book could be difficult for those without an open mind. The author's use of humour and stories of her patients helped me to recognize and accept my problem. I think we sometimes take life way too seriously, and that makes pain worse.
I am so grateful for this book. I can't begin to say what value being pain free is for me. It is as though I have my life back!
That said, I will admit that this information is not a panacea. I don't think it will cure asthma or aids. But, for structural problems and joint issues like mine, this information, and hard work, will be the answer. I am still in therapy and will be for a while. I expect that lasting results will not happen without sustained effort at relearning patterns of movement over a long period, probably the rest of my life. But it will be SO worth it!

This Recruit: A Firsthand Account of Marine Corps Boot Camp, Written While Knee-Deep in the Mayhem of Parris Island Review

This Recruit: A Firsthand Account of Marine Corps Boot Camp, Written While Knee-Deep in the Mayhem of Parris Island
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
As more and more people discover this book, there's going to be a lot of Marines out there kicking themselves, wondering why they didn't think of writing it first. Out of the millions of Americans who have gone through basic training, few have taken the time to painstakingly record their daily experiences. Typically, recruits are focused on just surviving. Somehow, Lalor managed to pull off the impossible at boot camp-- keeping a secret journal under the watchful eye of his Drill Instructors, possibly risking his career.
From the very first pages, this book hit home. Even though my experiences during Navy boot camp weren't the exact same as Lalor's, the similarities are endless. I too was a not-too-young recruit, who had joined the military to allay feelings of guilt and pent-up patriotism. Like Lalor, I knew that friends and family would think I was nuts to voluntarily sign up. At boot camp, my survival techniques were the same as many outlined in this book-- count the days until you go home, try to not take the way you're treated too personally, and remember how proud you'll feel once it's all over.
This book is a must read for two different audiences: First, anyone who has been through boot camp from any branch. You won't realize how much you've forgotten about your own experience until you've read a detailed account like this. Sure, there are plenty of things about these grueling early days that you'll never forget, but you'll be surprised about how much can come back to you once your memory is jogged. The drill instructors and the fellow recruits that Lalor spent every moment with on Parris Island all reminded me of people I dealt with and trained with at Navy basic training at Great Lakes.
The next audience for which this book should be mandatory is anyone thinking about joining the military, or who is already on his/her way to boot camp. During the first few terrifying minutes, days and weeks of basic, you will want to know how to make your life more bearable. This book will help you, because it will spell out all the dirty tricks, harsh behavior and round-the-clock stress you will be forced to endure. This book will help you understand that success in boot camp is only minimally about how many push-ups you can do, or how fast you can run. Instead, 90% of being successful is keeping your head on straight and learning how to excel while under extreme stress. Knowing what you're up against will give you the perspective that will help you rise to the top of your platoon. This book will give you the insight you'll need.
During your darkest hours on Parris Island (and there will be dark hours), you will thank yourself for having read this book.

Just before the dawn of the Global War on Terror, Kieran Michael Lalor left his career as a high school social studies teacher, endeavoring to fulfill his lifelong dream. Lalor followed his father and brother's footsteps into the United States Marine Corps. This Recruit presents Lalor's nightly journal entries, beginning with the uneasy trip to the recruiter's office and the eerily quiet midnight bus ride to Parris Island. Lalor describes the wicked combination of fatigue, nerves, disorientation, misery, loneliness, and homesickness that conspire to keep him from his goal-along with the hours of close order drill, push-ups, hand-to-hand combat training, the pit, and the unrelenting mind games.

Witness the nasty recruit-on-recruit infighting that results when young men struggle to survive while being pushed past their limits physically, mentally, and emotionally. Gaze at the target from the five hundred yard line on Qualification Day, when failure means at least an extra two weeks on the island and the added humiliation of failing the quintessential test of a Marine. Experience the rappel tower, night firing, the infiltration courses, and long, back-crushing humps. Struggle with Lalor and his platoon as they try to overcome the Crucible, the final obstacle before claiming the title of United States Marine.

Knees Up Mother Earth (Brentford Trilogy) Review

Knees Up Mother Earth (Brentford Trilogy)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Knees Up Mother Earth concerns the forces of darkness and their attempts to gain control of Brentford football (soccer) ground, so they can bring about Apocalypse. Only two professional layabouts can save the world, by getting Brentford to win the FA cup. This is near-impossible, but the forces of darkness aren't about to let it happen. Then things get complicated, when all sorts of strangeness appears...
Rankin likes in-jokes, wordplay, and general silliness, but it's not comedy, more sly humour. This isn't as good as some of his books, but it's not bad. It's a good break from more serious reading.
This is the seventh in the Brentford trilogy and the second in the Witches of Chiswick of Trilogy, and though it's not necessary to have read either (you'll pick it up quickly enough) I recommend having read the Witches of Chiswick first.

Developers are planning to destroy Brentford's beloved football grounds. Something must be done, and the lads of The Flying Swan, Brentford's celebrated drinking house, take up the challenge. Norman has recently discovered a Victorian computer that holds the secrets of the super-technology of a bygone age, and Archroy, Brentford's lone explorer, has just returned from his seventh voyage, bringing with him the fabled Golden Fleece. Surely, with these stalwarts working for the cause, the field is as good as saved. But this is Brentford, and the ancient forces of evil-Old Testament horrors, beasties from the bottomless pit, that sort of evil-are stirring.

In his own uniquely acid tongue, Paul O'Grady traces the hilarious tales of life in Irish Catholic Birkenhead that took him from a virtuous altar-boy ("my first drag") to Britain's best loved entertainer. It's a life that includes, varyingly, stints in an abbatoir, as a social worker, in a high-class Mayfair brothel, and traipsing down to London to chase his dreams. By 23, Paul O'Grady had been a father, husband, drag queen, gay lover, divorcee, and degenerate. He did it all with a smile on his face, making a mental note to register the whip-smart one-liners that would later inform his star-studded path from the fringes of comedy to the heart of the British establishment, first as his own brilliant comic creation Lily Savage, then, triumphantly, as himself. Paul's remarkable childhood and early life is littered with a dizzying cast-list of rogues, rascals, lovers, fighters, saints, and sinners. Oh, and one iconic bus conductress. Told with pathos, love, empathy, and naturally, biting humor, the story of Paul O'Grady is that of everyman, everywoman, and inevitably, every drag act ever. He has been rich and poor, posh and common, straight and gay. He has mixed with stars and whores and all that's in between, slyly spotting the similarity between them all. His amazing and riveting life story reminds us that there is, when all is said and done, a bit of savage in all of us.
