Over the past year I have lost weight and managed to maintain it. The only problem was I felt like I was a slave to an hour long workout session 5 days per week. This book changed my thinking! Chris presents a way to think about exercise in 10 minute chunks. You can squeeze them in throughout the day instead of skipping workouts because you do not have the time. Her "plateau busting" workouts are worth the price of the book alone. She has many workouts that you can mix and rotate so that you do not get bored. And they are easy to follow, something I have not found with other books. And instead of having to be in a room by yourself doing a DVD, you can hang out with the family watching a TV show while you blast through the calories. Who knows? They may even follow your good example and join in. Mine did. Chris also gives good nutrition advice that helps you get on a healthy track. In summary, whether you are just starting a fitness program (in many ways this book is geared for those starting out) or a seasoned gym rat, this book has something to offer. Shake up your thinking and exercise routine today!

Arnold's Bodybuilding for Men Review

Arnold's Bodybuilding for Men
Average Reviews:

The information presented in the book is no-frills weight training and practical advice. Perhaps that is why some people don't like it. They are usually the ones who are taken in by the allure of protein shakes, supplements of dubious value, and exotic weight training routines. It is unfortunate that Arnold, like most bodybuilders, got his huge gains from steroids. He is clear, however that his massive gains took many years to achieve. People still believe they can go from flab to male model muscle in 12 weeks or 6 months. Muscle takes work, time, and dedication, more than most people are willing to devote. Arnold's dietary advice is practical and no-nonsense. He deflates the standard ideas of high protein diets and vitamin supplements as a way to speed muscle gains. His recommendations are pretty standard, lots of fruits & veggies, small amounts of meat, avoid heavily processed foods. Not a very marketable point of view but at least a logical one. His blurbs about daily nutrition requirements were most likely lifted straight from the FDA, but that info comes from scientists, so its better information than what you read in muscle magazines.
The pictures are of course dated. Nobody wears calf socks and skimpy shorts with white piping anymore, and the models are like normal folks, hairy, balding, shaped funny. Today we are so used to shaved, tanned and sculpted models in magazines and books it is somewhat disconcerting to read this older tome.
His routines are brutal, so don't expect to be able do them completely. Mutiple sets are at the core of his training regimen. I tend to do only 2-3 sets per muscle group, but that is what I am comfortable with. Vary the routines to your liking and ability, because not everybody can keep up with Arnie...

Overcome Neck and Back Pain Review

Overcome Neck and Back Pain
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I had the pleasure of training with Kit Laughlin and other Posture and Flexibility instructors. Prior to learning Kit's approach I often experienced muscle tension in my neck, shoulders and back. Starting with the very first lesson, I learned specific stretches which eliminate tension in these muscle groups.
In Kit's first book, `Overcome Neck and Back Pain', he introduces a self-service approach to relieve neck and back pain through improvement of whole body suppleness. He demonstrates stretches targeting not only muscles in the neck, shoulder and back, but also muscles in the pelvic area and legs which influence back pain, as the reader will learn. Specific back strengthening exercises are included to help the reader build up the muscle strength needed to maintain good posture and prevent back pain.
I have seen students of all ages and levels of flexibility benefit from using these techniques. Although a book can never replace hands-on instruction, this book will lead you on a path to overcome neck and back pain.

Yoga: Mastering the Basics Review

Yoga: Mastering the Basics

As a beginning yoga student, I've consulted several books to support my practice and this is one of the best I've found. This book is slightly oversized and printed on thick, glossy paper so it feels really nice to use. The photos, drawings and text are clear and concise and the photos show modifications for different abilities. The book features two asana sequences and chapters on pranayama, relaxation and meditation. The chapter that sets this book apart has sections on problem areas such as hips, hamstrings, abdomen and back. The chapter shows you which poses in the asana sequences help in these areas and then shows additional poses. This is the only book I would recommend to the yoga beginner.

I am a physical therapist who has used this book as a basis for my "Prenatal exercise and Body Mechanics" Class. I have recommended it to my patients and to other professionals who teach prenatal classes. The author adds a unique perspective by inviting women to "think outside of the box" and take responsibility for their bodies before, during and after their pregnancy. The partner exercises are very well received by my patients (our hospital averages 300 births per month). I am also the mother of 21 month old triplets and I used the book as a personal reference and guide throughout my pregnancy. The book helped me to understand and appreciate just how fortunate we are as women to be able to bear children. The author's detailed description about the pelvic floor and the emphasis on the importance of the exercises is information that should be shared with young women BEFORE their pregnancy. I have been surprised by the number of my patients who have never heard of Kegel exercises or who have no idea they have a pelvic floor! A great book to pass along to all women!

Clinical Prediction Rules: A Physical Therapy Reference Manual (Jone's and Bartlett's Contemporary Issues in Physical Therapy and Rehabilitation Medicine)
Average Reviews:

This is a very good book. It basically summarizes all PT related clinical prediction rules and puts them all in one book for you. It discusses clinical prediction rule in regards to evaluation, treatment and prognosis. There is also a nice section on the stats that are commonly used with interpretation of the rules. Each rule is broken down and gives the level of evidence, the components of the rule, if you rule has been validated, etc. The only downfall of the book, in my opinion, is that when it gives the stats, the author uses terms such as mild, moderate, etc., instead of giving the actual number value or percentage of the stat. Overall very satisfied with the book. great learning tool.

Muay Thai Basics: Introductory Thai Boxing Techniques Review

Muay Thai Basics: Introductory Thai Boxing Techniques
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The book first describes the development, the history and the rules of Muay Thai and presents the necessary equipment.
In the second section, the fighting position, the steps and the fighting distance are explained.
In the third section, the attack techniques are described in detail: fist techniques, elbow techniques, kick techniques, knee techniques and clinch techniques. Muay Thai champions demonstrate the techniques in numerous pictures. As a result, the techniques can easily be copied.
In the fourth section, combinations for training at the sandbag and pads are demonstrated. The fifth section demonstrates a number of important defense and counter techniques. Additional techniques are demonstrated in the other book on Muay Thai written by the same author. The sixth section presents the content of a Muay Thai training section.
The book is excellently structured: the Muay Thai skills are passed on step by step. I also find the book design excellent. The large book is in color throughout and the pictures are superb. This is the optimum book for beginners and as an accompaniment to training!

The Way to Vibrant Health Review

The Way to Vibrant Health
Average Reviews:

The idea that there is a physical component to every psychological problem has always intigued me, and I had previously read a number of Alexander Lowen's books, and found them fascinating. Recently, I became very depressed over something in my life, a failure on my part to achieve something which on the surface level I could say to myself it's understandable, but beneath the surface I was judging myself very harshly. I went into therapy and also bought a number of self help / psychology books, nothing seemed to help much. I was having some pretty extreme physical tensions, and I remembered about Lowen and Bioenergetics. So I got this book, and what I can say is that doing some of the exercises in the book, in particular some of the exercises dealing with expressing anger, helped considerably. And it helped where the normal self help books did nothing. If you are having difficulty in your life and you find yourself interested in this approach, I recommend this book. It certainly won't cost you much and you might be surprised at it's impact.

I can't say enough great things about this book. Within the first couple of weeks of starting this program, I noticed big differences in my weight and how my body looked. The workouts are for your specific body type and they are not hard to do, nor do they require a gym membership. I have always gained and lost the same 10-15 pounds and could never rid myself of those "problem areas" even at a my healthiest weight. Now the weight is staying off and the problems areas are REALLY going away for the first time ever. I have lost around 8 pounds and even more inches. It is exciting and motivating to see this happening. This book definitely helps you get results that last. I feel healthy and strong and I love exercising -- and that is a first for me.

Many instructional books have been written about figure skating. Some are very good. Others are outdated. None, however, has been complete. The Complete Book of Figure Skating finally fills that void.

Author Carole Shulman is a former elite competitive skater, a Master PSA instructor, a professional figure skating judge, and the current executive director of the Professional Skaters Association. She provides most comprehensive, up-to-date book available on skating covering proven techniques and training methods for skills performed at all levels and in all disciplines including singles, pairs, ice dancing, and synchronized team skating.

The Complete Book of Figure Skating starts at the beginning—sitting on the ice and then learning to move across the frozen surface with increasing speed, style, and grace. The chapters build in difficulty, covering steps, spins, jumps, and lifts. From stopping to spinning to quad jumps, each skill builds on the previous skills as this complete manual guides you through the skill levels of figure skating.

Providing straightforward advice on how to select a specialty, choose proper equipment, condition off the ice, and manage nutrition—the book also describes the proper technique for more than 100 skills, presented progressively from beginning to advanced levels of expertise:

- Stops and stroking skills- Freestyle moves- Turns and footwork (including ice-dancing techniques)- Spins- Jumps- Pairs

For each skill you'll find a clear description with introductory or preparatory steps, followed by a detailed technical explanation to enhance your understanding and training. Special teaching exercises and tips will also help you master the most difficult components of each skill.

As added bonus you'll find helpful information in The Complete Book of Figure Skating about competitions. You'll learn the ins and outs of creating and refining a program—including music, choreography, and costumes—and discover inside tips on how to perfect your skills and score high marks from the judges.

The Complete Book of Figure Skating gives you an essential resource on how to perform the all the techniques and programs of the sport. Whether you're a skater looking to improve your technique or an instructor looking for innovative coaching methods, this book will help you achieve your goal.

Muscle Mechanics - 2nd Edition Review

Muscle Mechanics - 2nd Edition
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Having read and purchased dozens of books on weight training I have come to the conclusion that no one book is going to cover everything, let alone cover everything well. The situation is this: 1. The fitness boom has created a market and publishers and authors are trying to profit from this new market. 2. Some books are just a rehash of old ideas and exercises. 3. Some books actually offer new material or points of view. 4. All books are missing information that can be found in other sources. 5. Weight training can and is used by many people with different objectives. The novice who wants no more than to reduce the size of his/her waist and add a few curves will have different goals than the powerlifter who wants to bench press double bodyweight or more. So there exist more than one audience or market for training books. Beginner, intermediate, and advanced might seem like logical divisions, but it is not enough. Olympic weightlifters and powerlifters employ training regimens that would be unnecessarily orthopedically risky for other trainees even though all groups might use some of the same equipment and exercises. 6. As one reads more and more weight training books it becomes more difficult to find books that don't cover material one has already seen. 7. Given the above facts, building a weight training library becomes a daunting challenge. Naturally, the novice would want at least one book that covers the beginning stages well. Several books are adequate in this regard, but as someone once said,"There are no secrets in bodybuilding, but there are shortcuts." and if one continues to train, new information can be acquired that will maintain continued progress and interest. 8. There are too many weight training texts to read or purchase. Some sytematic rating system is desirable to guide the reader or purchaser. Hence foreward in my ratings I will try to give: a. audience rating for beginner, intermediate, advanced b. audience rating for general fitness, bodybuilder, powerlifter, Olympic weightlifter, athletic conditioning c. pros -- what the book does well d. cons -- what the book does poorly including omitted critical information , misinformation, and lack of precatuions or warnings that should accompany certain exercises or speed of movement e. value -- even though there is a proverb that says "Knowledge is finer than fine silver." sometimes one might find that the price for the knowledge determines whether it was a bargain or a bad buy.
With this in mind I let me list the pros and cons. Pros: 1. By using two colors of ink(black and cyan/blue) the diagrams that show the muscles used in each exercise are excellent. Better than 98% of the books I've seen. 2. The author has credentials including a bachelors degree in exercise science as well as experience as a competitive bodybuilder and coach and in the exercise business. 3. There is a strong emphasis on good exercise form. 4. Although there is not an overabundance of exercises, all the major muscle groups are covered. 5. The author presents three programs to build a sound foundation and progress safely from beginner to intermediate stage. 5.Some of the equipment shown is different than that more commonly seen. Experienced trainees might be interested in seeing Cybex's version of a hip abduction machine for comparison to Nautilus's. 6. The author takes a kinesiological approach to naming exercises. One may or may not appreciate this "orthopedic surgeon's approach" to naming exercises. 7. There are exercises for the rotator cuff muscles of the shoulder and their importance in injury prevention is exercised. This is a an feature lacking in older texts. 8. Usually two different versions -- machine and free weight -- for exercises are given. One or two omissions, but the effort is there and most exercises get both coverages. Cons: 1. Commonly used names for common exercises are not given. See 6 above. In effect, the author has created a whole new language which allows the reader to sound pedantic, but not be able to communicate with other trainees or cross reference his text with other exercise texts. 2. I saw no caution against holding one's breath while exerting a strongs effort to lift a weight. This is surprising given the general emphasis on safe technique. 3. I applaud the author's mention of pelvic tilt for safe body positoning. However, it should have been emphasized more. Enlarging portions of the two illustrations showing good spinal positoning and bad (lordosis) and pointing out the difference in the tilt of the hip bones would have been a good idea. 4.In early 2001 Newsweek magazine covered SuperSlow training protocol which was trademarked by Ken Hutchins in 1992 and I first saw used in 1984. Given its radical departure from traditonal weight training tempo and the fact that Wayne Westcott has modified his Nautilus instructions to incorporate it because of its effectiveness and safety makes one wonder why Everett Aaberg makes no mention of it. But then few authors outside of Ken Hutchins, Ellington Darden in some of his more recent books, and Matt Brzycki cover SuperSlow. I regard it as a serious omission.
I checked this book out of our library first and thought enough of it to buy it. If I were on more limited budget or less impulsive, I would not have. It's a good read, but if one already has a good introductory text, then the next purchase should be something else. Authors wishing to write a training book should definitely read this. It's nicely illustrated, well written, and the author does cover some new ground, but still it could be improved. Borrow what's good and fill in the blanks. That's your job.
I think all levels of trainees will find something to like in this book, but beginners more so than advanced. Whether or not they should by it is a different question. For about $20 the book is not overpriced at all.
