Jiangan: The Chinese Health Wand Review

Jiangan: The Chinese Health Wand

Jiangan substantiates that old adage about not judging books by their covers. Seriously, who's excited by the image of a bespectacled, white guy with a goofy countenance garbed in traditional Chinese silks, holding a bamboo stick in an awkward-looking position? Well, if you're interested in the health- and fitness-enhancing benefits of one of China's least-known albeit most effective exercise methods, you probably should be. Although it can work well as a stand-alone system, the Chinese health wand exercises described in this book are compatible with, and make a great warm-up for, most other martial arts, soft and hard styles alike.

Even though jiangan was "discovered" by an American, Bruce L. Johnson, in 1945, and ultimately published in a book in 1977, it never became popular in the West. Nevertheless, the movements can help practitioners integrate body and breathing while stretching and strengthening their muscles and simultaneously improving posture, balance, and flexibility. The exercises are low impact, take remarkably little space, and require only a single implement, a simple bamboo rod, cut to the proper length based on the arm-length of the individual.

With regular practice, say twenty to thirty minutes a day, the health and fitness benefits should manifest in short order. As the author relates, ". . . one month after I began practicing jiangan, the muscles in my middle and lower back were firmer and my knees felt much stronger. Several weeks later I was so much trimmer and leaner that friends asked if had been training in a gym . . . it can be argued that similar body-shaping results can be obtained from industrious workouts in other more robust types of exercise; the fact remains that it was jiangan, the gentle internal art, that worked."

Founder of White Crane Bamboo Group, Michael Davies began studying tai chi chuan in the 1970s and is currently senior instructor with the Tai Chi Union in Great Britain. His martial proficiency lends authority to his writing, while his tai chi and qigong teaching experience adds lucidity. He is clearly accustomed to explaining these concepts to his students. Using a personable, reader-friendly style backed up by clear figures and illustrations, he communicates the materials effectively enough that one can begin practicing jiangan merely by reading the book. That's quite an accomplishment!

The contents are well organized, covering history of the Chinese health wand, the gan (bamboo pole), philosophy of jiangan, and methodology of the exercises, as well as seventeen practice routines. There is a solid question-and-answer section, a guide to practicing, and several variations, as well as advanced exercises. This information should prove useful for students and teachers of the Chinese martial arts as well as most anyone interested in healthful, low-impact exercises.

Long before Tai Chi and Qigong became household names in the West, an American sailor visiting Shanghai discovered a gentle Chinese exercise called Jiangan - The Chinese Health Wand. This exercise system is simple yet potent and involves the manipulation of a lightweight pole traditionally made of bamboo. Jiangan co-ordinates slow diaphragmatic breathing with graduated stretching and strengthening exercises to promote circulation and stimulate the cardiovascular system. This book offers a concise practical guide to Jiangan exercises, providing detailed instructions and illustrations while also exploring the Chinese philosophy behind the art. Although a gentle and meditative form of exercise, this book shows that Jiangan has the muscle-toning and weight-loss potential of more robust gym workouts and is an ideal daily exercise routine or warm-up for a range of sports and martial arts classes. This book will be a valuable resource for teachers and students of Tai Chi and Qigong, as well as anyone looking for a simple and effective way to improve health and fitness using Eastern health arts.

I bought this book over a year ago and have read and followed it ever since, and right now I'm in the best shape of my life so far. I believe I'm in a good position to write a review for it. What I like about the book is that:
- It describes a large number of exercises in great detail (along with "make it easier" and "- harder" versions)
- It included traditional as well as newer exercises
- Useful for beginners as well as advanced lifters
- Includes topics like nutrition, cardio-workouts, sports specific fitness etc. in reasonable details
- The book doesn't make any unrealistic promises. (The results you achieve depend on the efforts you put in; a book can only guide you along the path)
- Gives injury prevention tips
- Makes an excellent reference guide
- Although the title says "Men's health", it can be used by women too (My wife often looks up exercises from it)
- Offers advice based on science-backed wisdom
- Useful if you want to do strength/weight training (as opposed to ONLY bodybuilding)
- Doesn't promote any brand-named products
This book helped me a lot when I was a total beginner and I still look it up when I feel like changing my routine or to check if my form is correct. Although I have used other fitness books, this book remains the backbone of my lifting plan. Over all, I'll highly recommend this book if you are serious about fitness and weight-training, even if you are a beginner.

Fedor: The Fighting System of the World's Undisputed King of MMA Review

Fedor: The Fighting System of the World's Undisputed King of MMA
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Written by Jacob Regar
There is no one hundred percent fail-proof recipe for unarmed combat. Practitioners must learn all they can to prepare themselves for any possible fighting scenario. Techniques alone do not ensure victory in the modern fighting chess match that is MMA. Subtleties like footwork, combinations set up off of evasive movements and offensive feints, and timing, are the essence of fighting success. These variables are difficult to perceive, let alone define, and the ability to fuse them with game-tested techniques against a skilled and prepared opponent marks the clearest indication of a modern fighting master.
In FEDOR: the Fighting System of the World's Undisputed King of MMA, the martial arts public can finally find answers to their ongoing question: how does Fedor Emelianenko do what he does in the ring? He writes in the introduction to the book's section on "counter attacks:"
"The goal in any fight is to constantly remain on the offensive and either rack up enough points to earn a judges' decision or put your opponent to sleep. If your opponent is timid or dramatically outclassed, achieving your goal can be quite easy. You simply beat on him until he drops. However, the majority of opponents you face will climb into the ring or cage with the exact same goal as you, which means you'll have to contend with his attacks. The only way to remain offensive against an opponent who is also offensive-minded is to learn how to counter his attacks. By attacking, evading his strikes, and then immediately launching counterattacks, your opponent will be locked in defense mode even though he is throwing every strike in the book at you. And as long as he is constantly defending, you'll be winning the fight."
The above excerpt is just a taste of the abundant nuggets of world-class fighting philosophy that can be found in FEDOR. His thoughts are expertly drafted into workable instructions with the help of famed MMA writers, Glen Cordoza and Erich Krauss. The book is filled to the limit with clear photographs of Emelianenko displaying the precise body movements necessary to execute each featured technique. Additionally, most featured techniques are accompanied by a section of highlighted "key concepts" to keep in mind.
While studying the book, you will undoubtedly recognize many of the same movements and techniques that have worked for Emelianenko in his fights against the world's best heavyweight fighters. In addition, the book includes many new and exciting techniques like the "Reverse Bridge Summersault Escape" from mount where he literally summersaults horizontally over his shoulders to roll his opponent over to the bottom position.
Widely known for possessing some of the fastest and most devastating hands in the business, Emelianenko presents an in-book clinic on his powerful striking techniques. You will notice in the book's photographs his familiar tendencies to maintain head movement; shift his feet to compensate for his changing offensive angles; and deliver his strikes with his fists rotated beyond the traditional norm. His explanations are not so much a surprise, but they will aid readers in adopting his unorthodox style into their own game.
FEDOR covers every area of MMA: from fundamental striking and slick submissions, to fight-effective takedowns and mindfully defensive techniques. What once could only be ascertained through careful analysis of his legendary fights can now conveniently be learned step-by-step in his first instructional book. FEDOR is both intriguing and brilliant. A must have for any serious martial artist. It is the new standard for MMA instructional books.

Yoga for Women Review

When I saw "Yoga for Women" for sale, I had to buy it immediately! This is the second book I've bought by Shakta Kaur Khalsa (the first was Kundalini Yoga -- also fantastic!).
I knew it would be high quality not only because it is published by DK (well-known for its beautiful photography, layout, and design) but because it is written by such a gifted writer!
Shakta has such a beautiful, lyrical, poetic way of expressing her deep well of knowledge about yoga.
This book is so rich in wonderful healing, energizing, and nurturing activities. It is incredibly beautiful and inspiring. I literally felt better just reading it, even before I did any of the very accessible and effective "kriyas" (exercises).
There's also a great section on yoga for relationships!
This book would make a perfect gift for anyone who is interested in learning about yoga in a clear, uplifting, meaningful way.
Thank you, Shakta, for blessing us with the beauty of your soul!

Core Performance Endurance: A New Training and Nutrition Program That Revolutionizes Your Workouts
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
To the point: This book is full of fluff. If someone is an endurance athlete they most likely aren't interested in what Mr. Vestegen has to say on aerobic conditioning. I know I wasn't - I wanted some help on correcting imbalances in my body that cause too many nagging injuries that take away from valuable training time.
In this regard, the book delivers. There are a solid 40 pages of exercises that are helpful in strengthening/lengthening the core and other problem areas. Unfortunately, the book is well over 250 pages long. A good chunk of it is normal "eat well" filler, with a heaping helping of "buy my stuff" blended in. My wife's comment on the book after reading it one night was "this reads like an infomercial in print form". I think that's a bit harsh, but not far off the mark.
The good information is worthwhile - just be prepared to skip the fluff.

This third book in the series builds on the strengths of the first two. While the casual observer of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu may be dazzled by the flash of flying arm-bars and triangles, the technician is drawn in by the fine details of the ground game - positioning, base, control. Joe and Ed have produced another book that will improve your understanding of the ground game considerably. Having had these techniques applied to me by these guys and their training partners, and having used them myself, for over ten years I know they work. Brute force and speed can only take a player so far. The techniques in this book bring out the finesse and beauty of BJJ. Collect all three books, study, and then train hard.Strategic Guard

Yoga for 50+: Modified Poses and Techniques for a Safe Practice
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I suppose it's my fault, what I really needed was 'yoga for 70+' to help me with the Gentle Yoga class I teach.
This book doesn't really address the age-related concerns I run into with my older students, like how to work around hip replacements and osteoporosis, what to substitute for inversions when a student has glaucoma, etc. But, like I said, my students are well over age 50 (I'm nearly 50 myself) so it's my fault for expecting too much.
The poses and prop variations it teaches are what I use in all my classes for less-flexible students of all ages. From that perspective, though, it's a fine book with clear instruction & illustration.

A definitive guide that not only is written in fine detail allowing the reader to understand the concepts of form to function, but clear and large photographs make the text relevant and real. Not sure how the loin relates to hip in underlying bony structure and why the relationship is important? If that prospect you're considering purchasing built uphill, downhill or somewhere inbetween? Depending on his build, in which specialty does his talent lie? Thomas breaks down the various body parts and puts them all back together again so the reader will come away with a better understanding of the whole.
This book doesn't get bogged down in paleontology and eohippus, but gets right to the point with useful information. Then use that knowledge to evaluate several horses in the final chapter.
This is a highly recommended study guide, written in plain english. Yet it is delightful to read. It will surely become the definitive guide for anyone serious about equine conformation.

Conformation concerns body structure and anatomy. In this comprehensive volume, Heather Smith Thomas explains how conformation relates to function and what to look for when evaluating a horse. She teaches the reader to see beyond a horse's physical beauty to identify desirable attributes and potential faults, and with copious illustrations and explanations, trains the eye to recognize the hallmarks of soundness, durability, trainability, and athletic potential. Thomas begins with an in-depth discussion of equine anatomy and the importance of balance and proportion. She also explains how to detect "heart," that indefinable quality that distinguishes a horse from his peers and compels him to excel. The book concludes with real-world applications of the principles of good conformation, including helping a horse succeed by matching him with the right job and what the conformation of the aging horse can tell you.Horses with good conformation move fluidly, experience less wear and tear on joints, and are more apt to stay fit and sound during a long life of service. Obviously I have read & enjoyed David Kahn's previous book & yes, I am biased based on that. I am biased because it is written in the same fashion as the previous one but at a much more advanced level, & that the learning curve is still NOT steep, but something that EVERYONE can learn & pick up very, very fast. His "No Rules" approach to those that may threaten your life is something that has helped me in quite a few situations, especially since I run a bar in New York City that can occasionally get rowdy. I have also learned how to restrain aggressive people in the most efficient & effective ways without doing any serious damage, but having the power and control to do so in a heartbeat if I felt my life was suddenly threatened. Being a former student of Praying Mantis Kung Fu & loving it, I feel that I have taken my martial arts training to the next level with David kahn's books. This book can definitely be used for fitness, but I find it's the most effective for those that may find themselves in dangerous situations. I also like that David has an approach in which you assume that your attacker may know what you know & how to always counter & use variations. If you are a martial artist or are seriously into MMA, this book is a must read.

I bought this book for review and learning during my interventional MSK fellowship. It gives you what you need to know to feel comfortable with injections you haven't done before. It also give enough to help improve your current technique. In a practice where several senior attendings have been teaching injection techniques for years, this book has helped me polish my confidence. My only beef is with the in-office SI joint injection. I'd just recommend they leave this one to the specialists. Overall, this book is great for quick get-in-and-get-out information. Thanks Macnabb.

Mastering the Twister: Jiu Jitsu for Mixed Martial Arts Competition Review

Mastering the Twister: Jiu Jitsu for Mixed Martial Arts Competition
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
MY PERSPECTIVE
First let me say that this book and it's predecessor "Mastering the Rubber Guard" have totally changed my game. I always disliked grappling because the moves never worked well for shorter guys like me. I only practiced grappling to supplement my stand up fighting, because I disliked it so much. I did Shooto and BJJ, but I was always very "blah" about it. But now, I love grappling, and I have the excitement of learning something new every time I experiment with the moves in Bravo's books. And most importantly... these moves actually work.
ABOUT THE BOOK
While the first book was Bravo's bottom position game (guard, half guard, "pyramid") this book is his top game (mount, side control, and back). Like the first book, this book shows each move in step by step detail with full color photos taken from two angles. Also like the first book, he teaches all of the moves in a flowing sequence so you can get a good idea of how transition from move to move. Also like the first book, the first portion is dedicated to his childhood and his love of drugs. If this bothers you, then just flip through the first several pages until you see pictures of guys doing ju jutsu. Or, just rip out the first section entirely and throw it away. You'll still be left with exactly what you were looking for; a ju jutsu book that has a ton of great info and is worth every penny you paid for it.
PROS AND CONS
If you are new to BJJ or a hardcore gi lover, then you'll find this book to be chock full of great material. You'll probably see setups that are a little bit complicated for you, positions you've never even imagined, and some basic no-gi strategy that probably no one but the advanced students in your school know about.
On the flip side, intermediate students and gi haters will find themselves frequently skipping over setups and no gi strategies that they are already very familiar with.
Personally, I like that the book has a lot of subtle strategies and techniques, and I'm sure that I'll return to this book again and again every time I can't quite figure out what I'm doing wrong. However, I was dissapointed that this book didn't have the same "wow" factor as the first one. Maybe if I had read this book first and the other one after, then I would feel the opposite way; I'm not sure. But after reading the rubber guard book, I didn't feel that Bravo's top game was quite as Earth-shattering as his bottom game.
That being said, I still feel that this book is full of great info and absolutely necessary to complete the system that Bravo began to lay out in his first book. The quality of the paper, photos, and writing EASILY makes this the best martial arts book I've ever seen (much less the best BJJ book out there). And I think that if you don't buy this book, then you are truly missing out on a whole new world in grappling.

Structural Yoga Therapy: Adapting to the Individual Review

Structural Yoga Therapy: Adapting to the Individual

I've looked at many books about yoga for various physical needs, and this is the most knowledgable and comprehensive book I've seen. Reading Peg2's comments, I can see what she means about photos. They would have been nice, or at least drawings of the postures in various phases, but in my mind this "inadequacy" is greatly overshadowed by other aspects of this book. Charts and comprehensive details about muscles need to be strengthened or stretched. There is a great deal of information about body structure, and the reader is guided through an analysis of their own posture problems. I have suspected that my shoulder, back, and knee problems were related to each other in some way. This book confirmed it. I have been doing recommended postures for a few weeks and am seeing real progress. I feel like I'm equipped to go into a yoga class and modify or substitute postures for to meet the needs of my body. The author has a physical therapy degree and well as yoga training and his knowledge level is very apparent in this book. I can't recommend it enough! This information is not available anywhere else that I know about, in this beautifully organized, accessible way.

Structural Yoga Therapy has been written for teachers and serious practitioners who want to use yoga to bring complete balance to the body. Mukunda Stiles begins by providing a comprehensive overview of the spiritual philosophy of yoga, and its many branches. He discusses everything that a beginning student needs to consider when choosing a practice, including how to find a yoga teacher. He also shares his solid understanding of anatomy and kinesiology (how specific muscles and bones react during movement) so that you can understand how each asana affects your body. Structural Yoga Therapy "TM" involves a series of 24 asanas. You'll learn "body-reading" to determine what your posture reveals about muscular imbalances. You'll find out about joint mobility and muscle strength and learn how to work with a series of joint-freeing exercises to strengthen muscles. Once you are fully acquainted with your individual needs, Stiles teaches you how to synthesize a personalized program from the 24 Structural Yoga asanas to optimize health and healing. This valuable textbook is also useful for anyone working in physical therapy, myofascial release techniques, or other forms of massage.

Stretching for Functional Flexibility Review

Stretching for Functional Flexibility
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I love running, cross country skiing, hiking, whitewater canoeing and just about anything athletic and outside. But I don't like stretching. So for me to give a stretching book 5 stars really means something. The book deserves rave reviews because of three major accomplishments:
One - it takes a complex subject and explains it both simply (for guys like me) and with great detail (perfect for more advanced students and professionals).
Two - the book is organized in a way that makes finding the stretch you're looking for easy, and it is organized in a way that teaches you at the same time. I often find myself exploring and discovering new things even when I look up just one thing.
Three - the book is satisfying to the eyes and the mind. You could spend hours just looking at the fascinating pictures of the human body (think of the "Body Exhibit"). Or you could read the book through like a novel because of it's multiple layers of form and function.
If you're at all interested in better performance, specific sport stretching, improving your posture or owning a book that will entertain and enlighten you hour after hour, I can't recommend this book enough.
