Lee puts you inside Justin's head as he struggles to deal with things that are beyond his control--from a lonely alcoholic mother whom he love and tries to protect to the "devoutly religious" foster family who takes him in, introduces him to church and subsequently sexually abuses him.

But it is Gideon, the wise old black man, who is at the heart and soul of this book. It is Gideon's understanding and kindness that help Justin to see that there is good in the world.

Any person, young or old, who reads this book will come away with a better understanding of how to cope with the ups and downs of life.
