Sports Pages (Reading Rainbow Book) Review

Sports Pages (Reading Rainbow Book)
Average Reviews:

Arnold Adoff has written marvelous books of poetry. This isn't one of them. Many of the poems seem to have been written by children. Perhaps that was the intention. Perhaps a sports fan or athlete would be able to connect to the text better than I did. There are some excellent images such as a soccer player who is "a brown tornado on a muddy day" and a dry throat waiting for a cold can of pop. Could be a nice tool for getting young athletes to reflect on their activities through poetry and other types of writing.

From Head to Toe Board Book Review

From Head to Toe Board Book

This is a fantastic book! The large, colorful pictures and the simple, clear text keep children bending and stretching right along with the animals! Still, unlike many of the reviewers who loved this for their one-year-olds, we found that this book didn't work for my active, not very verbal daughter when she was one (even though she sat for other books). We pulled it out again around the time she turned 2 and she LOVED IT. This book was a huge hit. Now at almost 4 it is still one of her favorites. Even if she's tired at bedtime she gets on the floor to do her donkey kicks along with the donkey! My older daughter also reported that this was one of her preschool teacher's favorite storytime books.I would say that for many children this book, despite it's deceptively simple pictures and text, is more appropriate for older children (age 2-4). This is a book I buy all the time for 2nd birthdays - It's always a hit! (especially good for active kids who prefer being "active" listeners!)This is an excellent choice for a book that will last kids for years!

Your Dog Plays Hockey? (Peanuts Gang) Review

Your Dog Plays Hockey (Peanuts Gang)
Average Reviews:

The Peanuts gang is at it again. The story starts off with Snoopy at the emergency room after injuring his knee in a hockey accident.
Sally tells Charlie Brown where Snoopy is and he goes down to the hospital. Meanwhile, Marcie hears about Snoopy and decides to go to the hospital to be supportive of Charlie Brown. While waiting Marcie and Charlie realize something very important about dogs. With this discovery, Snoopy is rescued from surgery.
This book is a good introduction into humor for children. As an adult, I was smiling throughout the book. The drawings are clear and colorful.
The Peanuts Gang makes you smile.

Bony-legs (Hello Reader Series) Review

Bony-legs (Hello Reader Series)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
My youngest child has been afraid of the dark, strange noises, and the unknown for a long long time. At age 6 he discovered this book, and read it again and again.
This surprised me at first - it's a lot like Hansel and Gretel but for a small child, boy or girl, who is dealing with the scariness of the real world, Bony-Legs is a story that's scary but encouraging. What goes around will come around, is the message this book gives.
Sasha's aunt (her mother never would have done such a thing!) sends her to Bony-Leg's house in the woods to fetch a needle and thread.
Along the way, Sasha is kind to a hungry cat and a skinny dog, feeding them her lunch. She greases a creaking gate at the entrance to Bony-Leg's cottage.
"Poor gate," said Sasha, "You need some grease."
Once she gets to Bony-Leg's, she's locked in the bathroom, told to get nice and clean so Bony-Legs can eat her up. The cat, the dog she fed on her way to Bony-Leg's give her a mirror, a wooden comb and let her escape without a mew or a bark. The kindly oiled gate lets her out without a squeak.
With the help of these others, and the use of her own cleverness in figuring out how to use the mirror and the comb, Sasha escapes. And Bony-Legs - well, you'll have to read the story to find out all the details!
An enjoyable, short read filled with color pictures and a kind child's cleverness.

Maybelle, Bunny of the North Review

Maybelle, Bunny of the North
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I have to admit, I had never heard of Homer, Alaska before reading Maybelle, Bunny of the North. I was intrigued to find out more. Turns out, Homer is the place where "the land ends and the sea begins." It's noted widely for significant numbers of halibut and it's become a destination spot for many Alaskan visitors. Some visitors head there looking for adventure, while others go for a relaxing getaway.
The main character, Maybelle lives in Homer, Alaska and just like the town's visitors, she looks for adventure and enjoys the relaxing getaway that Homer provides. Maybelle is a high-spirited bunny who acts as a little tour guide and teaches us about the seasons in Homer.
"The winter days are short and cold here. But the summer days are long and sunny."
The easy-to-read text follows Maybelle around the magestic playground as she experiences the soothing aspects of nature and outdoor play and later eases into sleep, dreaming of her adventures at the end of the day. Whether she's scampering in the fireweed, sloshing through the melting snow and ice, searching for special rocks at the beach, or visiting the Two Sisters Bakery, she always has time to offer a friendly "hiya" to her neighbors.
This is a wonderful book to share with young readers to teach them about Alaska, the changing seasons, and the wonderful aspects that the outdoors has to offer. The watercolor illustrations bring Maybelle to life as she takes a hot bath in the sink, chases the geese in the fall, and walks through the fireweed.

Whose Toes are Those? Review

Whose Toes are Those
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
WHOSE TOSE ARE THOSE is Jabari Asim's second board book for babies and toddlers in which the focus is on body parts. The text is playful and engaging and appeals to a child's excitement about themselves. The illustrations are the perfect complement and are bright and colorful, making them easily relatable to the words on the pages. Little girls, especially, will love the book as it clearly represents several of ther aspects, such as "the girl with the sparkling eyes and that cute button nose."
WHOSE TOES ARE THOSE is a perfect book to assist in teaching body parts and the beauty of even the simplest of things; in this case, toes. It fosters awareness of self-esteem and depictions of themselves in which children of color can recognize. From the rhyming text to the introduction of counting, this adorable book will become a favorite for children and parents alike.

The Very Fairy Princess Review

The Very Fairy Princess
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
"The Very Fairy Princess" is a charming and witty story about young Geraldine, who believes with her entire being that she is a fairy princess -- even when others do not. She believes because she feels it inside. Julie Andrews Edwards and Emma Walton Hamilton have written a brilliant story with a very strong message and creative language every little girl will remember and want to use. The book is beautifully illustrated.
I know after reading this book to my granddaughter, she was showing us her "sparkle." It also gave us the opportunity to encourage her to find the sparkle in her mommy, daddy, grandma and grandpa. It's challenging to find the right words to use when talking with young children about inner belief, courage and self-esteem. It is remarkable how just one special word, "sparkle" can convey so much to a young child. This book is a keeper with our princess! I highly recommend it for all little princesses 4-8 yrs of age.

Socks Appeal: 16 Fun and Funky Friends Sewn from Socks

At the risk of thrusting a fluffy pink arrow through my he-manliness, I feel compelled to reveal the utility of Maloney's Socks Appeal. I bought it as a gift for a pregnant neighbor, and yet soon found myself flipping through the pages instead. Suddenly a realization: I can do this. I can make a sock critter for my own kin (tears of love from my daughter, massive bonus points from my wife, a win win!). And so I tackled "the hamster," the little cutie on the cover (minus the argyle). Before you can say Renaissance man my daughter had a new favorite lovely. And through no skill of my own; the instructions in Socks Appeal are smartly illustrated--there's a photo accompanying every move (take note, cookbooks). If you want to get your hubby man involved in making some arts and crafts for the kids, this is the book to do it.

Ten Little Fingers (Board Books for Babies) Review

Ten Little Fingers (Board Books for Babies)

My 15-month old daughter spends a bit of time almost daily with this book. She was about 10 months at the time we purchased it and fell in love right away. She loves to act out the movements and watch us as we do it. The rhymes are fun, and the perfect length to hold the attention of little ones. This is also a good one to act out in the car, as it takes no time to have it memorized.

This award winning series has been specifically designed for babies. A great introduction to books through well-known nursery rhymes and interactive text. Singing songs and rhymes is the perfect way to bond with your baby and share quality time. It also aids language development by introducing them to the natural sounds and patterns of speech. The Kneebone Boy Review

The Kneebone Boy
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
"The Kneebone Boy" has gotten all sorts of **starred** praise and it well deserves it in my opinion. It's a book that manages to be whimsical and magical, and yet realistic and emotionally moving as well. It's one of my favorite books for the year. Up there with The Last Summer Of The Death Warriors. (And if you haven't read this other book, get to it. It's a marvelous YA read.)Ellen Potter's writing is thoroughly British and very witty. The kids are quirky but lovable, and their discussions with each other are intelligent and filled with filial warmth. (I'm perfectly bored with your usual dysfunctional family at this point, so this was salve for the soul.)
Their story is a two pronged Gothic thriller. One fork being what exactly happened to their mother-- who suddenly disappeared one night; the other being who is the mysterious Kneebone Boy in the mansion they come to live near.
I'd write more but I think the less said the better. This is a book to just pick up without much foreknowledge, so you can be swept away trying to figure out what the heck is going on.
Great read. Great fun. Suitable for Middle-graders and YA and even older folk.

My 2 year old loves head and shoulders. Since I am trying to start teaching her Arabic I thought this would be the perfect book and it is. As a novice in Arabic this book is easy to read. The quality is great, I love that it is a board-book(nice and indestructible), the pages are glossy and the pictures adorable. I am very glad I purchased this book. I hope the author and publishers make similar books in the future.
