This review will be short. Like all the other reviewers have said, this book is superb. The subject matter is extremely well organized, so already it has addressed what has been a major problem-in my mind anyway-of all of these other books. Organization. It was certainly noticeable in Royce and Charles' self-defense techniques, which was too bad as the techniques were all quite good in that one. My only problem with this effort by Kid and Royce for this book is the title. Ultimate Fighting Techniques is not exactly appropriate unless this material will be fleshed out some more in the rest of the series. I know we can expect another volume on the bottom position, but UFT is really a book about sport BJJ with a little self-defense against punches and kicks thrown in. Royce doesnt' address striking on the ground much at all. And his low kick entries are very, very basic. I am not saying that the book shouldn't be purchased, just that if you are expecting a treatise on NHB techniques this isn't exactly the book you are looking for. If you are looking to sharpen every aspect of your BJJ top game than definately get this book.

Production value is first rate; pictures are clear and explanations are excellent. This book and it's predecessor, "Brazilian Jiu Jitsu:Theory and Technique" are arguably the best martial arts books ever produced in terms of overall quality.
Content is good but there is some of repetition of techniques that were shown in the first book, however this time performed without the gi. It is very thorough; responses to nearly any common attack are included- most are quite simple and easy to learn and remember. Defenses against common knife attacks and stick-ups (pistol) are also covered, as are a couple of stick defense and disarms.
Caveat to those looking to learn new grappling techniques: there are very few ground fighting techniques in this book other than escapes and counters to common headlocks and the like.
Why I gave 4 stars: The organization of this book is just plain bad. There seems to be no logical order that the techniques were grouped in; at least I can't see it. Similar techniques are randomly scattered through the book. If you want to find a particular technique, tou have to scan the list in the TOC or flip through the bok - no index! It would have been better to group similar techniques together into "chapters".
Overall pretty darned good, although I would recommend "BJJ:Theory and Practice" as being slightly better in terms of overall techniques and content.

Brazilian jiu-jitsu has turned the martial arts world upside down by emphasizing real-life situations and results over the dramatic kicks and throws of formal competition, making it also one of the most effective self-defense techniques for non-athletes. This guide to the self-defense techniques taught in the classes of Royce Gracie, one of the biggest figures in the world of jiu-jitsu, provides lessons that anyone—regardless of strength or size—can learn to neutralize an attacker in seconds. It offers a variety of defenses to use against knife and gun attacks, as well as escapes from headlocks, choke holds, and other situations that attackers use on the street. Advice on practicing and falling and rolling make this book the next best thing to taking the classes that are popular with the United States military, police academies, and women's self-defense schools.

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Submission Grappling Techniques (Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu series) Review

I found this book to be a very good one on using Brazilian Jujitsu techniques in a no-gi environment. Compared to other BJJ works, this one is very well organized. As always, the photo quality is quite good. The author starts off by discussing the difference between gi and no-gi training, including tips on defending and passing the guard in no-gi grappling. He then talks about a training routine, including how to be a two-sided grappler and the importance of eliminating one's weaknesses. He goes on to discuss what he thinks it takes to be a champion, including knowing yourself and your opponent and having a good strategy. Then it's on to the actual techniques. Royler covers grips first, assuming that the reader will not be familiar with no-gi grappling. In this section, he covers many different grips that are possable, from locks around the body, to controlling the hands, to ways to hold the legs. The next section contains five drills, two solo and three with a partner, covering things like standing up to a base and setting up for takedowns. Next is 23 standing techniques, many of which are takedowns, and includes some takedown defense. Following that are 75 ground techniques, and include everything from the basic 'upa' escape to combinations of holds. Generally, the techniques seem grouped better in this work; for example, the mount escapes are all shown together, instead of haphazardly strewn throughout the text. The book itself seems oriented towards those who already are familiar with the basics of grappling, but who are trying to transfer from gi to no-gi sports. It could also help suplement a self-defense program, due to it's extensive ground escapes and holds. A pretty good book, but it doesn't explain the principles behind grappling holds, which I feel would have made it much better.

The tactics and techniques of two of the greatest competitors in the history of mixed martial arts combat, Renzo and Royler Gracie, are captured in this book. Their 'grappling' style of martial arts is explained -- methods that focus on holds and throws rather than kicks and punches, and come closer to the spirit and nature of real fighting than other martial arts. Covered are the history, rules, philosophy, strategy, and positions of submission grappling, providing a complete account of this increasingly popular sport.

This third book in the series builds on the strengths of the first two. While the casual observer of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu may be dazzled by the flash of flying arm-bars and triangles, the technician is drawn in by the fine details of the ground game - positioning, base, control. Joe and Ed have produced another book that will improve your understanding of the ground game considerably. Having had these techniques applied to me by these guys and their training partners, and having used them myself, for over ten years I know they work. Brute force and speed can only take a player so far. The techniques in this book bring out the finesse and beauty of BJJ. Collect all three books, study, and then train hard.Strategic Guard

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu: Theory and Technique (Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu series) Review

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu: Theory and Technique (Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu series)

I've got a few BJJ books, but this one takes the cake. It's a virtual bible of technique, clearly explained and demonstrated (hard in a book sometimes) and with a typical Gracie attention to detail. You won't be able to learn BJJ from a book, but if you're a student--like me--you'll LOVE this because how many times have you learned a new technique and then forgotten it? Or at least a key element to it? You've got it just... up... to... this... point... and then you can't remember the finish.
That's why this book rocks: go look it up! You'll find yourself saying "AHHHH... dammit! THAT'S it! That's what I forgot!" It's awesome for that reason.
It's not particularly loaded with super-advanced techniques, but you ought not be worried about those until you've mastered all these--and this will keep you busy for a long, long time.
I saw this book at my BJJ school and came home to order it ASAP. This is as good as it gets. I know the Grappler's Manual is also supposed to be incredible, too, but I have not yet seen that.
Buy it. You'll be using it for years.

Jiu-Jitsu University Review

This is a fairly comprehensive survey of the basics, covered in a belt-by-belt perspective. The photographic quality is emblematic of the new style of MA tutorials, with clear pictures, and techniques portrayed from multiple perspectives in a top-down, linear fashion. It's the same style used in Couture's "Wrestling for Fighting" and several other recent works.
There are scads of GJJ books on the market, so I will only cover what makes this one different from the rest. One noticeable difference is in the belt pedagogy. In the Gracie books, the techniques assigned to belt levels (if at all) are often apparently randomly selected and organized. Ribeiro, on the other hand, assigns a principle goal of each belt, and then organizes techniques in accordance with the goal. The main thing to realize is that many (most?) classes put defensive techniques and offensive techniquest together at each belt level, with proficiency, as well as learning some advanced techniques, being the key to getting the belt. Ribeiro, on the other hand, groups like techniques. Therefore, the reader's class will likely be out-of-step with this book. Ribeiro is presenting a pedagogy, not an encylopedia of techniques, so if you're considering this book, keep that in mind.
Amazon won't let you see the TOC yet, so I will break the chapters down.
White belt: The goal is "survival," which seems completely reasonable to me, at least as a focus. This chapter covers the correct positions to attain and to hold while you're under another player's mount (top, side, back, etc.). Ribeiro lists the mistakes he thinks players typically make when defending against submissions in these positions, and some of his techniques are slightly different from what I've seen taught elsewhere. The point here is that the new player hasn't learned, or at least, isn't proficient at, escapes or submissions yet, and he needs to learn how to survive while thinking of his next move. I found Ribeiro's pointers to be useful...things I wish I would have learned on my first day of class (instead of being thrown to the wolves).
Blue belt: The goal of the blue belt is to focus on escapes. Escapes are discussed from the the above positions, and, as in the earlier (and later) chapters, Ribeiro lists mistakes players typically make, as well as his own unique techniques.
One primary difference, then, is that this book provides no offensive techniques for either the white belt or the blue belt. That's okay from the standpoint of this book being a supplement to actual classes, but would be quite interesting if the book were akin to Ribeiro's classes. My school failed where Ribeiro succeeeds -- focusing on survival, or at least, defensive techniques, for the lower belts -- but my school was also, I think, more conventional in that it required excellence in dozens of offensive techniques in order for blue belt to be acheived.
Purple belt: The goal of this belt is to become proficient in the guard. The earlier pattern continues.
Brown belt: The goal of this belt is to learn guard passing. The earlier pattern continues, and a variety of basic and advanced techniques are presented.
Black belt: The goal of the black belt chapter is to learn submissions. Anyway, the moral of the story is to be clear on what you want when choosing a supplemental text. This book presents sound techniques and an interesting approach to study, but one that is likely to be completely out of sync with what the reader needs to learn in order to get ahead in class. Other books present laundry list of techniques without any sense of order or purpose.
Hope this helps.
