The Guard (Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Details and Techniques) Review

The Guard (Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Details and Techniques)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Having thoroughly read Volume 1: 'Passing the Guard' (and still working on it, daily), I awaited Volume 2 eagerly. Beneville had teamed up with Tim Cartmell for the first book and has done even better here, documenting some of the game of the legendary Joe Moreira.
Moreira is a deserved 7th Degree Black belt and Beneville (also now a black belt) is an articulate and logical author with an eye for detail.
The book uses the same revolutionary format as 'Passing the Guard'. White vs Blue photos, re-illustrated photos to show details and fantstic descriptions of techniques and details. The details is the area that sets this book apart from the others. The detail explanations are better than you see on most video presentations!
The book starts with 'Fundamantals' and details one and two man drills for improving movement skills and makes examples of their applications. Then, it moves immediately into guard pass counters and defenses. This demonstrates techniques and principles to defeat the most common passes. It lines up really well with Volume 1, here, too.
From here, there is a section on basic chokes. Quite basic, in fact. However, I guarantee you'll find details you didn't know, or at least forgot.
From there, it's sweeps. Sweeps get the same basic treatment as chokes, with the little details that will make your game better. Each technique works well together and weaves into a game. The details serve to explain when to attempt the sweeps in terms of mechanics, as well.
Armlocks against stacking is an important, rarely covered topic and it gets its own chapter, here. From this section, I got immediate benefit, as I have long sought to counter this basic defense. As a result, the games of others who roll with me are changing to not rely on stacking as a passing method. An example of ongoing benefit.
My favourite two sections of the book are next. They deal with attacking good posture. The first is on the upright posture and the second on the "stalling" or "control" posture. This is another of those sections with "a-ha" moments for me. These sections detail intricately how to attack those with good base and posture. These sections are worth more than the purchase price, alone.
The next part is on "Flowing Attack" and details a series of techniques meant to work together to become part of your game. Do I need to mention the details demonstrated, here? I guess not. But they are there and that's what separates this from other books.
The next section on neck control is another rarely covered topic. It shows how to manipulate the opponent's position to improve yours - all by controlling the neck. Moreira, for the most part controls the head and neck in various ways before popping out to the back or the quarter position to finish a series of armlocks, crucifixes and chokes.
The backroll is then covered. Usually treated as a last resort to a stacking pass, Moreira and Beneville show how to turn a bad situation into an attacking one by going back over the shoulder and recovering guard, scoring the takedown or attacking with a submission.
Lastly, is "Snake Knees and Standup". In this section, the authors concentrate on coming to the knees or feet in base. Everyone knows this movement (you do know the movement, don't you?), but most will not know the true attacking value of the movement until they read this book. Again, it's one of those techniques usually used as a last-ditch defence.
All-in-all, this is probably the only book that surpasses Volume 1. In fact, it's the only book in the same league. I enjoy the Gracie / Kid Pelligro type books for the information presented and insight they give. However, none come close to the details and presentation of this book, let alone the sheer volume of information.
Beneville should be selling this book for a lot more than its price tag (The amount of work in this book is astounding). And everyone involved in the grappling arts should be purchasing it - regardless of level.
I know there's material for years here for me.

The Guard is the quintessential Brazilian Jiu Jitsu position. Other martial arts assume that once someone is on their back that the fight is over. But that assumption is unfounded. Fights don't end just because they hit the ground. For the jiu jitsu man the fight has only just begun. The Guard is a detailed analysis of core concepts, details, and techniques key to success for ground fighting.Author Joe Moreira reveals secrets of his guard technique developed and refined over his thirty five years studying and teaching martial arts. In this volume he shares the fundamentals of his jiu jitsu, the specific details needed to make it work, and technique ranging from beginning to advanced. The philosophy in this book and of Moreira teaching style is that it is better to understand groups of moves/options from given positions, than isolated moves. This is an exposition of sequences of moves from specific situations, not a collection of random moves. The Guard shows not only how to attack or defend from a position but also how to respond to an opponent's likely reactions.Continuing in the model of Grappling Arts Publications first volume, Passing the Guard, The Guard provides a revolutionary approach in its visual presentations. Techniques are shown from multiple angles. Key points are illustrated. Photo sequences are laid out in intuitive easy to follow patterns.

Championship Techniques (Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu series) Review

Championship Techniques (Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu series)

What I have been wanting is a book that treats the full sport of gi BJJ. While BJJ is such a complex game that you can never really encompass all of it in a book, you certainly can select the most important movements and cover all of them in detail. This is what this book does: it has 83 fighting moves and 12 solo drills, covering everything you really need to know. Because of decades of experience under BJJ rules, which were devised in the 1970s, and an acceleration of skill very recently due to Jiu-jitsu's popularity soaring exponentially, the techniques found critical for competition nowadays are not quite those classic movements relied upon twenty or thirty years ago. The pivotal moves in today's world are quite fascinating and often counterintuitive and complex. Since overly simplistic movements are often easily stopped with simple defences, the moves that tend to be effective in high level fighting today are those that are less predictable in their development, are easily altered in the middle, and involve changing the angles of pressure on your opponent through a series of shifts and grip changes.
The single-minded sport focus of the book is very reassuring for any buyer looking for a full treatment of the sport of Jiu-jitsu, as I was. Also it is wonderful that the book does not deal with MMA or no-gi submission wrestling. It is very focussed on what it treats, and it treats it as fully as any book could ever be expected to.
This is a masterpiece of a book and I think it could serve as an excellent model for books treating any other combat sports.

Combatives: FM 3-25.150 Review

Combatives: FM 3-25.150
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
One reviewer wrote that (in his opinion) ground fighting is not practical. I would be willing to bet that this person has never been in a real fight. MOST fights end up on the ground and if you can control your opponent you can defeat (kill) him. As far as the other raters assertaion that "submission" is somehow less than ideal in unarmed combat, I assure you that once you dislocate your opponents shoulder, knee of hip you can kill him at your leisure.
This reviewer also made it sound like this method of combatives is complicated. I will agree that looking at pictures in a book to learn this method can be difficult but you have to remember this is a reprint of a United States Army Field Manual. We use FM's to augment knowlegde that we already have through institutional training. If you have been trained in this method the FM becomes a refresher.
I have black belts in both Tae Kwan Do and Karate and can honestly tell you that a "grappler" who is experienced can defeat a puncher or kicker easily.
My Soldiers (I am a First Sergeant of Paratroopers in the United States Army) all easily learned this form of combatives and are much better preparred for combat because of it.
I only gave the manual three stars because this book is not for everybody. First you need the training and if you have that this is a great refresher.

The Clinch (No Holds Barred Fighting) Review

The Clinch (No Holds Barred Fighting)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Mark Hatmaker continues his "No Holds Barred" series with a text on the clinch. In it, he teaches clinch variations, how to control them, how to strike and throw from them, defenses to these techniques, and how to condition oneself for the intense, close-range battle that is the clinch.
Mark begins his book with a bit of a forward on the recomended use of the text. "The Clinch", he says, can be a stand-alone piece, but recomends picking up "No Holds Barred: Takedowns" to accompany the title. He then moves on to the three basic clinches shown in the book: the "head clinch" (a modified Thai plum possition), the collar-and-elbow, and the over-under. He notes the optimum ways to grip each clinch, and lists common mistakes. He then shows two excercises, the squat & dive-bomber pushup, that he recomends the reader do to prepare themselves for the rigors of clinch-fighting. Next, he introduces the reader to the concept that "it's OK to disagree"; that is, never enter a clinch passively, as seen in some wrestling events. After that is a small chapter on circular footwork, the kind seen often in a clinch. He explains the concepts behind the footwork. Missing from this chapter are illustrations, but his clear, concise explaination is easy to follow. The last chapter on fundamentals is on pummeling in the various clinches. "Pummeling" is the act of wrestling for control and possition, and this is an invaluable chapter.
After that, we get to the meat of the text. Mark covers striking first, taking each clinch one at a time. The first section is the one of the head clinch, offering various knee attacks, singly and in combination, and low kicks. The collar-and-elbow chapter consists of just two "roughing" techniques, forearm and shoulder shots. The section on striking from the over-under includes many of the same lower-body shots as in the head clinch, but also includes some punches and elbow strike, as well as some more roughing techniques. Then it's on to takedowns. I found it nice that he included a takedown from the head clinch, 'cause it's not generally thought of as a possition where one can execute a throw. The collar-and-elbow section is somewhat brief, focusing on setups for leg takedowns, but Mark refers to his "Takedowns" book as a source for people hungry for more. Finally comes the extensive section on over-under takedowns. Mark classifies these throws into 8 categories, including whizzer takedowns, bodylock takedowns, trips, and duckunder takedowns. There are more than enough high-percentage takedowns in this section to be worth the price of the book. Following that section, Mark covers several ways to defend against throws when your opponent has moved into a headlock or waistlock possition.
Mark devotes the final chapter in the text to the "backcast" throw, also known as the suplex. He begins with six excercises and drills to train the body for the backcast; this chapter should not be ignored. He goes on to demonstrate several backcast variations, including using it in combination or as a counter-throw. He then finishes up the text with counters to the backcast.
This is an excellent text in the continuing "No Holds Barred Fighting" series. The only thing I might complain about is the lack of extensive takedowns from the collar-and-elbow, but that's a possition rarely seen in MMA events, anyway. Given how little work exists on the clinch, I'd call this a must-read for any aspiring MMA fighter.

With its complete focus on a single fighting position, this handbook unsparingly examines the clinch. In the clinch, the no-holds-barred combat techniques of striking and grappling meet, posing new challenges and calling for new strategies. With these detailed explanations of each aspect of positioning in the clinch, fighters can set up their own clinch takedowns and beat those used against them in the ring. The unique striking tools, protection strategies, and takedowns the clinch requires are explained for both offense and defense, moving smoothly between each fighting element to maximize advantage. A clinch situation is an inevitability in NHB fighting, and this reference gives fighters the most complete education in turning the clinch to their advantage.

Chin Na in Ground Fighting: Principles, Theory and Submission Holds for All Martial Styles Review

Chin Na in Ground Fighting: Principles, Theory and Submission Holds for All Martial Styles
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Author Al Arsenault offers a complete view of chin-na (gripping/grappling) techiques for the ground, from initial standing position to the ground application. The level of this book is basic to advanced--a person with little experience (you'll likely need some grappling experience to understand any book on ground or throwing arts) can hone their understanding through practicing and studing the explanations in the narrative. Advanced concepts are also demonstrated and explained in an organized manner.
The format in this book endears itself to study, with photos and diagrams clear and easy to comprehend. Arsenault goes beyond simply showing a technique which might be difficult to apply without an experienced instructor by explaining through detailed narrative precisely how one must manouver and position oneself. We also learn WHY the techniques and positioning are done as they are done, how they work, and how to get the most out of a technique. This practical and sensible approach can be appreciated by grapplers and strikers alike.
The square construction of this thick book makes it less likely to flop shut when you spread it on the mat to experiment with the techniques shown within. All in all, a straightforward offering which can offer new ideas and applications regardless of one's style of practice.

Actually this book is almost too easy to read and use. These kinds of holds really should be taught by a competent instructor for safety's sake. But, Mr. Scott knows his subject so well that the step by step instruction can be followed easily by the rawest beginner or the most advanced practitioner of Martial Arts. And, Mr. Scott covers almost all of the issues with each movemment. The only other book that I have read that is as complete as this one is Mr. Scott's book on armbars.
This book is well worth the price for any student of the Martial Arts.

Tap Out Textbook: The Ultimate Guide to Sumissions for Grappling
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Even though the author used "Ultimate" in the title, he has actually done a fairly good job with this book. So much so, that I decided not to ding him a star in my ratings, which I usually do, because of him using "Ultimate," "Complete," or "Bible" in the title and then having the information provided inside the book not even coming close to living up to the title. And even though this isn't really the "Ultimate" guide to submissions for grappling, it is a darn good one.
The author primarily covers three basic areas in this book which are;
1. Arm Locks
2. Chokes and Strangles
3. Leg Locks
Although he does briefly go over several other areas that are essential to the primary focus of this book.
I did feel that there could have been a bit more detailed text in certain areas concerning the various techniques demonstrated, but that was really a minor concern and one that perhaps wouldn't even be noticed by someone already involved in jiu-jitsu, but probably would be by the novice or beginner.
The photographs were very well done and showed the techniques being demonstrated very well, although it would have been nice to see some of the techniques from a couple of additional angles.

Dave Camarillo provides an excellent bridge between Judo and Jiu-Jitsu in this innovative instruction manual. This isn't your traditional, "My take on jiu jitsu" book - it shares insights of the few practioners to reach world class levels in both Judo and Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. As such, it has more Gi standup material than most books, and successfully integrates the Judo throws into submissions from transition. Camarillo also shows "flying" attacks, integrating submissions to the stand-up game. He's uniquely qualified to present these integrations.
Positives noted, this book isn't for everyone. It isn't aimed at detailing basics and fundamentals - there are much better books out there that specialize in jiu jitsu 101. It's also not encyclopedic. There are other books that do a better job cataloguing all the moves out there. That said, Camarillo certainly has enough knowledge to put out a sequel or two. I hope he has time to write them.

Street Stoppers: The Martial Arts Most Devastating Trips, Sweeps, and Throws for Real Fighting
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This book shows step by step illustrated depictions of martial arts techniques for use in defending against violent confrontations against violent, agressive people.
I've been a martial artist for over 35 years, including karate, judo, wrestling and jui jitsu. One glaring problem with many martial arts, and many martial arts books, is that the techniques are either geared for sport, or they heavily rely on a system which emphasizes the "art" aspect of the martial art. This may be fine if your goal is spiritual oneness with the universe. But, when you are attacked by a violent thug, who is drunk, high, mean and a bully, spiritual purity won't help you. You need to be able to fight back and impose your will on that person who is trying to hurt you.
This book is an American martial arts book which gives highly practical, workable techniques. That is not to say that the proverbial 98 pound weakling will be able to read this book and overnight become a beast and a terror. Not at all. But for the serious student of the martial arts, or anyone who is interested in the subject, this book shows devastating techniques which will allow you not only to survive an attack, but to disable the attacker which may prevent a similar attack on some other person.
Overall, this is an excellent book that fills a void in the martial arts literature. Highly recommend.

This third book in the series builds on the strengths of the first two. While the casual observer of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu may be dazzled by the flash of flying arm-bars and triangles, the technician is drawn in by the fine details of the ground game - positioning, base, control. Joe and Ed have produced another book that will improve your understanding of the ground game considerably. Having had these techniques applied to me by these guys and their training partners, and having used them myself, for over ten years I know they work. Brute force and speed can only take a player so far. The techniques in this book bring out the finesse and beauty of BJJ. Collect all three books, study, and then train hard.Strategic Guard

MY PERSPECTIVE
First let me say that this book and it's predecessor "Mastering the Rubber Guard" have totally changed my game. I always disliked grappling because the moves never worked well for shorter guys like me. I only practiced grappling to supplement my stand up fighting, because I disliked it so much. I did Shooto and BJJ, but I was always very "blah" about it. But now, I love grappling, and I have the excitement of learning something new every time I experiment with the moves in Bravo's books. And most importantly... these moves actually work.
ABOUT THE BOOK
While the first book was Bravo's bottom position game (guard, half guard, "pyramid") this book is his top game (mount, side control, and back). Like the first book, this book shows each move in step by step detail with full color photos taken from two angles. Also like the first book, he teaches all of the moves in a flowing sequence so you can get a good idea of how transition from move to move. Also like the first book, the first portion is dedicated to his childhood and his love of drugs. If this bothers you, then just flip through the first several pages until you see pictures of guys doing ju jutsu. Or, just rip out the first section entirely and throw it away. You'll still be left with exactly what you were looking for; a ju jutsu book that has a ton of great info and is worth every penny you paid for it.
PROS AND CONS
If you are new to BJJ or a hardcore gi lover, then you'll find this book to be chock full of great material. You'll probably see setups that are a little bit complicated for you, positions you've never even imagined, and some basic no-gi strategy that probably no one but the advanced students in your school know about.
On the flip side, intermediate students and gi haters will find themselves frequently skipping over setups and no gi strategies that they are already very familiar with.
Personally, I like that the book has a lot of subtle strategies and techniques, and I'm sure that I'll return to this book again and again every time I can't quite figure out what I'm doing wrong. However, I was dissapointed that this book didn't have the same "wow" factor as the first one. Maybe if I had read this book first and the other one after, then I would feel the opposite way; I'm not sure. But after reading the rubber guard book, I didn't feel that Bravo's top game was quite as Earth-shattering as his bottom game.
That being said, I still feel that this book is full of great info and absolutely necessary to complete the system that Bravo began to lay out in his first book. The quality of the paper, photos, and writing EASILY makes this the best martial arts book I've ever seen (much less the best BJJ book out there). And I think that if you don't buy this book, then you are truly missing out on a whole new world in grappling.

"The Twister" is a neck-jarring, spine-torturing submission hold refined and mastered by Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu superstar Eddie Bravo.Early in his jiu-jitsu career, Eddie Bravo dominated dozens of jiu-jitsu competitions with this unorthodox move. When the Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Federation banned his trademark move, he proved the effectiveness of his entire grappling style by defeating the legendary Royler Gracie without "The Twister".In Mastering the Twister: Jiu-Jitsu for Mixed Martial Arts Competition, Bravo uses over 1,200 color photos and descriptive narrative to illustrate snaring an opponent in the infamous Twister from virtually every control position. Also revealed is the entire Twister Side Control game, dozens of submissions from the mount, numerous routes to take your opponent's back, highly effective ways to pass your opponent's guard, and the secrets of "The Truck", Bravo's patented control position.

To succeed in the highly competitive nature of combative grappling disciplines, one must establish and master an active, aggressive ground game, including being able to dominate an adversary when we find ourselves on our back, needing to fight the opponent who is between our legs. This is especially true for small fighters, like this reviewer, working against much larger and stronger athletes. By default, we often find ourselves in this position, needing the skills to better our situation aggressively and with confidence.
THE GUARD, Volume 2, Expanded offers the practitioner just that: an extremely active and aggressive curriculum for learning how to dominate an adversary with confidence. This book provides the detailed instruction we will need when we find ourselves on the ground, on our back, needing to win.
Once again, Grappling Arts Publications of Costa Mesa, California with Ed Beneville and his instructor, Joe Moreira have created a visual work of art that moves from page to page as a still-framed motion picture, where we can inspect each and every frame of action for a specific learning experience. This format of flowing photos, taken at various angles, leaves nothing to be presumed, insofar as what the specific application is being taught and demonstrated.
As with all previous manuals from Grappling Arts Publications, this second edition of THE GUARD, teaches NO movement in isolation. Movements are grouped or chained together for a more comprehensive and thorough understanding of not only the guard's fundamentals, but explicates the flexibility and the inherent variety of defensive and offensive maneuvering within this very active position.
There are twelve color-coded chapters, which are instructional solid with both color photos of superior quality and paper, coupled with concise text to fully explain what we are observing through the visual contents. The twelve chapters cover all of the fundamental aspects of maneuvering successfully from an active and aggressive guard position into the most appropriate follow-up, submission or change to a more dominate position. At the conclusion of each chapter, an entire review is provided, which serves to join the chapter's composites into an expanded flow chart, where the practitioner can literally visualize this unified diversity of movement options available.
There are no passive guard applications within its 264, 8 ½ X 11 inch pages. What's more, an entire chapter demonstrates what we can do to the one who is in our guard, behaving passively, just lying there, attempting to smother us with his body's mass. This book strongly conveys that the guard is supposed to be a very active and aggressive position--not one where we merely lie on our backs, holding on to the adversary, hoping for the best.
The chapters cover the fundamentals of moving comfortably and aggressively while on our backs into the appropriate guard postures; counters to those who will attempt to pass our guard; chokes we can slip on successfully when we have achieved a strong guard posture; sweeps; offensive counters we can apply to those attempting to stack us; attacking both upright and stalling (aforementioned) postures within our guard; three different series of flowing (chained) attacks; achieving head and neck control over the adversary who is in our guard; reversing a pass with roll-outs; learning how to get to our knees or to a standing posture from our guard, and the conditions when this will be necessary; and finally, sweeping the standing opponent who is hovering about our guard.
Over all, this book is a beautifully created, quality made, and comprehensive training manual dedicated to assisting the serious grappler toward developing a complete, aggressive guard repertoire. This book exceeds well beyond the norm of any standard, competent training manual covering the Brazilian Jiu Jitsu's infamous Guard position. Well done, gentlemen.

The guard is the quintessential Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu fighting position. Other martial arts assume that once someone is on their back that the fight is over. But that assumption is unfounded. Fights don't end just because they hit the ground; for the jiu-jitsu man the fight has only just begun. The Guard is a detailed analysis of core concepts, details, and techniques, key to success for ground fighting from the guard position.
