The Complete Idiot's Guide to Fitness Boxing Illustrated Review

The Complete Idiot's Guide to Fitness Boxing Illustrated
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I have taught boxing aerobics for many years, and I have published reviews of numerous boxing books in the past. This book is one of the best books I have ever read on Fitness Boxing. It is one of the most comprehensive and well illustrated books ever published on using boxing as a total fitness activity. It covers every aspect of fitness, not just the punching exercises of boxing. This book also includes a 650-minute DVD which demonstrates the fitness exercises and movements in the book. However, there is one flaw in the DVD in that it promises to take you through 12-two minute boxing rounds, but all it does is show you how to do the exercises. Nevertheless, the book is still worth purchasing. This text is broken down into four parts. Part one provides an introduction and reasons to choose fitness boxing as your workout choice. Various warm up exercises are also shown in this section. The second part covers training tools of boxing, taking a fitness boxing class, how to use power and balance balls, using weights and how to do partner exercises. Part three finally gets into the actual mechanics of boxing. This part covers stance, balance, footwork, how to throw the basic boxing punches, and using workout bands in your boxing workout. The final section covers various workout routines such as shadown boxing and bag work.
In conclusion, if you are interested in boxing for total physical fitness, you will want a copy for your personal library. I also recommend this book to fitness professionals who teach or would like to teach boxing for fitness.
Rating: 5 Stars. Joseph J. Truncale (Author: Samurai Aerobics: The Kenjutsu/Kendo Workout Program)

Winning on the Mat: Judo, Freestyle Judo And Submission Grappling Review

Winning on the Mat: Judo, Freestyle Judo And Submission Grappling
Average Reviews:

This book is full of useful information for people that already know the basics of the throws. There are better basic instruction books but, this book has lots of variations and tips and the classic throws. Kudos for Mr Scott taking the time to show and discuss them.
My only negative is that the pictures are black and white and sometimes are actual competition throws where the bodies are so entwined it is hard to dissect the technique. If would have been much better in color, but that would have made the book cost much more.
Lastly, for those following Olympic rules, i.e. USA JUDO, USJA, ETC, this book uses AAU Freestyle rules, which the author clearly states in the beginning. So, don't try to use a leg grab or something shown in the book at a non AAU Freestyle competition, or you will get disqualified. Doh!!!!

Relax into Stretch : Instant Flexibility Through Mastering Muscle Tension Review

Relax into Stretch : Instant Flexibility Through Mastering Muscle Tension
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I almost didn't buy this book because some of the reviews are so negative...but I'm glad I did anyway. A few points:
1. This method absolutely works...I say this after studying karate for 4 years (hundreds of kicks, stretching that included pouring water on the floor and having someone push down on your back, staying in stretched positions for up to an hour, etc..) yoga, stretch machines, standard stretch routines. Through all this, my stretch increased very little. I couldn't even sit on the floor with crossed legs without discomfort. My karate instructor used to say I had the flexibility of a rock. Pavel's method works. Get the book! The concepts are simple, but revolutionary. A few more points:
2. There is enough information and stretching routines in the book to last for years. I don't understand the reviews that say there is not enough info in the book, too many pictures, etc...I appreciated the fact that I could quickly go throught the book and get right into the stretching.
3. There is another reviewer who outlines all of the potentially harmful stretches, based on his assessment as a doctor. However, all of the stretches he talks about are in the advanced stretching section of the book; they are extreme exercises, that Pavel clearly states are not for beginners.
4. Appearances can be deceiving...for example I was experiencing slight lower back pain from one routine and then I went back and read how to do the exercise, and realized I was overstretching, not controlling my breathing and tension as described in the book. In spite of the clear, "simple" format of the book, it is rich in information, that must be read carefully.
5. One last point: this book is for those who need to get to the next level. (I can't believe someone recommended Anderson's "granny" stretch book over this one; give me a break) Whether to reach top levels of fitness, martial arts study, rock climbing, etc...I'm thinking of someone who is into total fitness.)
On the other hand, it's also worth reading for the weekend athlete, only because the knowledge can help one prevent injuries and avoid harmful stretching methods.
Disclaimer: this is not a cheerleader review for Pavel. I have no connection with him whatsoever, just a very appreciative reader. Get the book!

Low Kicks: Aiming Low For Maximum Punishment In Unarmed Combat Review

Low Kicks: Aiming Low For Maximum Punishment In Unarmed Combat
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Fred Hutchinson's Low Kicks is an excellent manual for training the body's most powerful anatomical weapons -- the legs. The manual's format is similar to John Sanchez's Slash and Thrust and Andrea Ferrara's Corsican Steel. (What these manuals share in common is the presentation of training exercises that are independent of style or system. The obvious result is that any reader can benefit from their information regardless of his/her own background, expertise, or combative preferences.) Low Kicks begins by identifying those kicks that Hutchinson considers most appropriate for self defense from the perspective of the reader who cannot train regularly in a dojo. The kicks he recommends are simple in execution and effective in application. Some kicks are drawn from traditional karate, and a few others come from French savate. At least two kicks Hutchinson uses come from WWII Military Combatives, a "style" of combat that has recently developed a large following in the US and Britain. The book then proceeds to reveal a variety of training methods used for making the kicks even more effective. The methods described are such that the reader can utilize them in his den or basement without relying on elaborate equipment or training devices. What is most unique about Low kicks is not only that the author has diligently selected those kicks that work best under a wide range of circumstances, but that the kicks fit in smoothly with the body dynamics used by diverse martial arts systems from karate and savate to ninjutsu and combatives. We have recently made Lopw Kicks required reading in our training halls, and unreservedly recommend it to anyone interested in practical personal protection.

Street Tough, Hard-Core, Anything Goes Street Fighting Fundamentals Review

Street Tough, Hard-Core, Anything Goes Street Fighting Fundamentals
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Phil Giles's "Street Tough" system is a rough-and-tumble system based in part on scientific boxing, sport jujutsu, and MMA. He simply takes these various elements out of the ring and on to the street. The emphasis is on full-contact, live training and realistic drills. He begins with "Fundamental Fighting Concepts", introducing the clinch, the shoot-style takedown, clinching against a wall, weak points of the human anatomy (differentiating between lethal and non-lethal targets), drills for closing the distance vs. punching and kicking, and even a little on pre-emptive striking. The second section is "Street Boxing Concepts", and includes the basic position, how to generate power, and a basic arsenal of tools including both open-hand and fisted techniques, and the headbutt. His explainations of the use of his stance and the medical justification for not excluding the headbutt are worth reading. The third chapter is on "Mobility and Defense". He goes over basic footwork from his stance, and moves on to defensive body movements like the slip, and simple, scientific defensive techniques like the catch and Driscoll parry and Driscoll bridge. He includes examples of their usage and some drills for improving both footwork and defense. Covering almost sixty pages, his chapter on "Ground Fighting" is the longest. He starts off by stating that going to the ground is not desirable most of the time in a streetfight (good advice if I've ever heard it), and then proceeds to discuss the various groundfighting positions. He gives the reader several offensive options for each position, and usually some accompanying drills. He always reminds the reader that "dirty tactics" (biting and gouging) should be utilized whenever possible. He also includes striking for downed opponents, getting back to the feet from the ground, taking down an opponent from the "open guard", and various training drills. My only objection to this section is that, at least in the States, kicking a downed opponent is considered excessive and will most likely result in criminal charges being made. Overall, though, this is a very good book. The only thing that might be missing is basic weapons usage and defense. The techniques are very basic and essential, and the training seems quite practical. They seem very compatible with Jun Fan and BJJ/MMA. I'd recommend it to anyone wanting to learn to fight, either for self-protection or even for sport/MMA.

In this book, Phil Giles provides full-throttle instruction in how to prevail in a street or bar fight, from the proper combat mind-set to the first stand-up blows to when the fight gets down and dirty on the ground. This is some of the most aggressive self-defense training you are ever likely to receive, including the best ways to close with an opponent to smother his attack, how to slam someone up against a wall and really go to work on him, and vicious ground fighting tactics that will make an opponent instantly realize that he made a very bad mistake when he decided to assault you.A series of intense training drills performed at full power and full speed sets the Street Tough program apart from all other self-defense regimens.

Dynamic Kicks: Essentials for Free Fighting (Specialties Series) Review

Dynamic Kicks: Essentials for Free Fighting (Specialties Series)
Average Reviews:

Mr. Lee's book was one of the first martial arts books I ever bought 18 years ago and one that has found a permanent place in my library.
The best part of this book is the "Techniques Basic To All Kicks" section. I thoroughly enjoyed this section and although I did not agree with all of it, I found it to be very beneficial to anyone learning how to kick.
The sequential pictures for the proper execution of each kick presented were very well done and for the most part quite accurate. I did feel that the picture angle used on some of the kicks could have been done better in order to allow for a better view of each kick.
This book also lacked an application section which would have enhanced the book even more by showing you how each of the kicks was to be applied to an opponent.
This book spends too much time on quantity of kicks, and too little time on the quality of each individual kick. Which seems to be the norm for books dealing with this subject. Thirty-one kicks are explained in this book and the average explanation of each kick is two pages in length, which consists of anywhere from 8 to 14 pictures, and what amounts to 2 to 5 paragraphs of written text on how to perform each kick.
Although the text sections are too short, they are still a lot better than some of the others that I have seen in other kicking books.

Wrestling Sambo: The Secret Combat Art of the Former Soviet Union for Special Forces and Real Self Protection
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Book Description
This book makes up for the lack of literature on this fascinating combat art of wrestling Sambo of the former Soviet Union, which is gaining increasing popularity particularily between no holds barred fighters and self protection experts in general. This book is suitable for all people, starting from beginners, enthusiasts, and finishing with experienced athletes, also it is a strong guide for martial arts trainers, grappling and wrestling coaches and no holds barred fighters.
Recommendations and 89 actions, including 44 throws, takings down, sweeps, 23 submission techniques, 11 holdings down in ground work, 11 over turnings, presented in the book, equips people with adequate skills, qualifying them to be much mentally, physically, emotionally stronger and confident in real combat street situations and even for participation in important tournaments and competitions.
From the Author
I am writing in response to the reviews of my book. I welcome all comments both positive and negative, but am disappointed when criticism comes from not carefully reading the contents of the book.
This is not a book to read once but studied and referred back to time and again. This book is a technical manual to learn and develop the techniques of Wrestling Sambo, techniques that have been very successfully used in real combat situations.
This is not a book on pure sport technique, if you look to chapter 3 Submissions, p95, p96 and p102, you can clearly see that these techniques can never be used in any kind of competition. You must first learn and master these techniques like any other activity, like for example golf you don't expect to master just because you picked up a club, it takes practise and study till you really began to appreciate and love the game.
As I state at the beginning of the book p.11, this book is a small but important step into the combat art of Wrestling Sambo, opening your eyes to this fascinating art of wrestling and that you begin to get your first taste of it. This is a secret art because there is very little literature on the history or techniques of Wrestling Sambo, hence the title.
More techniques such as neutralizing your opponent when all kinds of strikes, punches and submissions are involved will be covered in following video as there is more than enough techniques to learn and conquer in the book, only having mastered them will you be ready to take on such things and be in my way of thinking. These techniques take a much longer time to master than other martial arts techniques for self-defence like all kind of strikes to the groin, flicks to the eyes, slaps to the Ears all kinds of strikes to the knee etc, and still you have to practise them hundreds of times to succeed. You can read more about this in p138 of the book.
I would like to make a more direct comment to someone who reviewed my book. The comment about the pictures on street grappling, it is clearly stated p133, that these pictures are for your own imagination and that I would not be explaining them. I gave a short description of how to use wrestling Sambo in general in the street. The last comment about the pictures is that me, grabbing and throwing a guy is not self-defence, I don't know how an opponent feels when you are smashing him against a wall, car or pavement to protect yourself, or that a hold that basically dislocates or tears the ligaments of both your opponents elbows is not self defence.
So when you have learnt everything from the book, including 44 throws, takings down and sweeps, 23 submission techniques, 11 holdings down, 11 over turnings in ground work you will be ready for the deep explanation of how to use all Sambo Wrestling techniques for real self protection in street situations.
Thank you for all comments and good luck to everyone!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Thai Boxing Dynamite: The Explosive Art Of Muay Thai Review

Thai Boxing Dynamite: The Explosive Art Of Muay Thai
Average Reviews:

This book describes all the basic techniques in detail, but tapers off when explaining advanced techniques like jumping round kicks and knees. It has VERY concise explanations of the front kick (foot jab) and round kick. The elbow sections are dated, but informative. This book is from 1987, and most of the material has not been updated on the "westernization" of Thai boxing. Jab, Cross, Hook is NOT covered. The author has the habit of writing an introductory paragraph on a technique, a few lines on execution, and then a piece on fighting application. Most of the sections really should be expanded. This book has excellent pictures and background information. The summary of the training routine is excellent. You could easily set up a program with a partner using this book. Overall, taking into account the shortage of material on Muay Thai, I would recommend this book to the beginner. Don't fool yourself, though. You MUST have an instructor to learn Muay Thai!

This was a great book to read and the information here is pretty straight forward. This book deals with close quarters hand to hand combat. This book will teach you certain pressure points, joint manipulation & locks, precise places to hit the human body & throws. This book will also show you knife & gun disarms which could save your life someday. If you don't know much about the world of military combatives this would be the book to get. Some of the material seems to be outdated and the copyright on it seemed older. This is the reason I did not give it 5 stars. We all need to remember that violence in the streets or at the workplace is very common these days. You need to be prepared with some form of self defense and you'll get it with this book.

The book "Muay Thai: Advanced Thai Kickboxing Techniques" by Christoph Delp shows that the author has gained experience in fighting and training in Thailand. The techniques range from basic up to some I haven't even heard of, despite the years I have worked out in Thailand. This book is very good to use additional to the daily work out in the gym. Of course a book can't teach you how to become a good fighter, but even some "professionals" should take the chance to re-read some of the excellent descriptions regarding the shown techniques! Additional to the good text work, the photos are making it easy to follow the different movements. Reading the book and the included interviews plus viewing the photos of the thai-stars and high officials, gives you an impression on how the special atmosphere in Thailand is like. All in all for me this is the only book that was written out of the view and the experiences of someone (a farang) who lived and practiced in Thailand not somewhere else! Excellent work.

Sabaki Method: Karate in the Inner Circle Review

Sabaki Method: Karate in the Inner Circle
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is the missing link between dojo sparring and Bruce Lee's insurmountable Tao of Jeet Kune Do. To all black-belt level Karate/Tae Kwon Do/Tang Soo Do students, this book is a "must have". Master Ninomiya goes beyond the classical description of punches, blocks and kicks found in common books, and offers a conceptual framework for the application of such techniques in combat. While Bruce Lee may have tempted many to quit their traditional styles regarding them as a classical mess, Ninomiya tells you your karate need not be a mess if you train hard and understand your goal and your means. His technical theory is simple and conceptually unquestionable: position yourself in the "blind spot" of your opponent, and terminate him. However, it demands lots of training to be carried out flawlessly under the stress of actual combat. Ninomiya comes from the famed Kyokushin tradition, which combines a traditional mindset, the strongest of training ethics, and a creative approach to fighting. Kyokushin and its derivatives (as Ninomiya's Enshin Karate) adopted a set of rules forbidding punches to the face, but allowing full contact to the body with the fists, feet and knees, as well as full contact kicks to the legs and face. This lead to an agile and versatile kicking style, plenty of spinning motions, axe kicks and other techniques (usually identified with Korean styles), within a very powerful and realistic fighting scenario. The technical examples found in the book are based on the assumption of power and intention behind the attacks and responses (so although some concepts may be useful, they may not be entirely carried to "tag" point sparring). That being said, the teachings of this book will work both for sport and for self defense. In other words, this book may help to make training in the dojang/dojo more in tune with the requirements of street survival using the same punches, strikes and kicks that are basic to Karate/Tae Kwon Do/Tang Soo Do. After hearing during the last decade that the only way to deal with a street situation is to know pressure points or jujitsu, at last we see a true master putting things back into place and saying "hey, why don't you knock him down with punch/kick/takedown?" Ninomiya and co-author Zorensky describe basics, motion patterns, counter-attacks, control/grab motions, and discuss all major topics within training, with plenty of photographs and very clear drawings to ensure adecuate footwork. So not only the content is valuable from a martial art perspective, but the layout and edition are very good. In order to grasp a deeper understanding of the book, I also recommend to read Ninomiya's autobiography, very inspirational indeed.

I got this book along with many others shortly after taking san soo classes. And of all the books I've read, this is the best written book on martial arts. It's clear and precise, and the techniques are VERY practical. It's unfortunate that san soo hasn't gotten too much exposure like the other forms of martial arts, because it can be utilize by a beginner effectively. I would recommend this book even if you are learning other forms of art.

The best way to survive a streetfight is to end it before it starts, and that is the essence of san soo kung fu - to brutally take your opponent out before he gets a chance to attack! When some street thug intends to do you bodily harm, it is not the time to pull punches. So be sudden! Be violent! And win.

First off I am not a practitioner of Hwa Rang Do; the book was recommended to me by my uncle who has his fifth degree black belt in the system and who is very involved in the organization. My experience has been in Kenpo, Kung Fu and Brazilian Jujitsu. I found this book very interesting; I have experience with the majority of the techniques or concepts in the book in one form or another. I enjoyed Mr. Lee's presentation of these techniques, he explains them in an easy to understand format. Although it is my understanding that this is just the tip of the iceberg of what is said to be a complete and dynamic system.
The chapters detailing the history of the art are very informative, especially to someone that knows nothing about the system. The book also briefly talked about the philosophical aspects of Hwa Rang Do. The book is a good intro to the style for anyone curious or anyone considering studying it (like me); it could also give the experienced practitioner a deeper understanding of the arts evolution, and a handful of its techniques. Over all, this is book is informative and worth the money.
My only complaint is that the pictures are small; this problem would have been easily fixed by expanding the size of the book. Considering this is my only complaint, I would recommend this book to anyone interested in the art, or just expanding your martial arts knowledge.

Outstanding demonstration and explanation of this highly popular style of karate which, moreso than most places great emphasis on foot technique. The text is easy to understand and its' thoroughness of detail and display of skill in technique make it second only to Jordan Roth's masterwork Black Belt Karate. It must be said that this book would probably not serve a novice student too well as there are some moves which could prove difficult to master, like the front and side-limbering kicks and the flying roundhouse kick. This book should perhaps be best viewed as a companion piece to Roth's as there are several techniques not covered in that book, such as the hook kick and the rising heel kick.Great emphasis is placed on sparring so I would say that it is absolutely essential to work with a partner when referring to this book.As one who enjoys the kicking techniques of karate this book definitely comes highly recommended.Class cover shot of a perfectly executed side thrust kick enhances this book's already considerable appeal and usefulness.

Sang H. Kim presents a well written and organized book on kicking. Mr. Kim covers the basic kicks found in most martial arts. His material is easy to follow with examples of correct and incorrect form. Mr. Kim incorporates sample target areas for the kicks presented and some may find it a little slanted towards Taekwondo. I thought the book was not only well written but an excellent resource for a dojang/dojo/kwoon library. Beginners will probably find this very helpful yet even the experienced instructor can apply the material presented to improve their own techniques. Mr. Kim has done it again!
