This is by far the most honest look at self-defense (male or female) that I've read. It is a no-nonsense approach and hits the often ignored points of awareness and preparedness which are just as, if not more important than the techniques shown.

Wrestling Sambo: The Secret Combat Art of the Former Soviet Union for Special Forces and Real Self Protection Review

Wrestling Sambo: The Secret Combat Art of the Former Soviet Union for Special Forces and Real Self Protection
Average Reviews:

Book Description
This book makes up for the lack of literature on this fascinating combat art of wrestling Sambo of the former Soviet Union, which is gaining increasing popularity particularily between no holds barred fighters and self protection experts in general. This book is suitable for all people, starting from beginners, enthusiasts, and finishing with experienced athletes, also it is a strong guide for martial arts trainers, grappling and wrestling coaches and no holds barred fighters.
Recommendations and 89 actions, including 44 throws, takings down, sweeps, 23 submission techniques, 11 holdings down in ground work, 11 over turnings, presented in the book, equips people with adequate skills, qualifying them to be much mentally, physically, emotionally stronger and confident in real combat street situations and even for participation in important tournaments and competitions.
From the Author
I am writing in response to the reviews of my book. I welcome all comments both positive and negative, but am disappointed when criticism comes from not carefully reading the contents of the book.
This is not a book to read once but studied and referred back to time and again. This book is a technical manual to learn and develop the techniques of Wrestling Sambo, techniques that have been very successfully used in real combat situations.
This is not a book on pure sport technique, if you look to chapter 3 Submissions, p95, p96 and p102, you can clearly see that these techniques can never be used in any kind of competition. You must first learn and master these techniques like any other activity, like for example golf you don't expect to master just because you picked up a club, it takes practise and study till you really began to appreciate and love the game.
As I state at the beginning of the book p.11, this book is a small but important step into the combat art of Wrestling Sambo, opening your eyes to this fascinating art of wrestling and that you begin to get your first taste of it. This is a secret art because there is very little literature on the history or techniques of Wrestling Sambo, hence the title.
More techniques such as neutralizing your opponent when all kinds of strikes, punches and submissions are involved will be covered in following video as there is more than enough techniques to learn and conquer in the book, only having mastered them will you be ready to take on such things and be in my way of thinking. These techniques take a much longer time to master than other martial arts techniques for self-defence like all kind of strikes to the groin, flicks to the eyes, slaps to the Ears all kinds of strikes to the knee etc, and still you have to practise them hundreds of times to succeed. You can read more about this in p138 of the book.
I would like to make a more direct comment to someone who reviewed my book. The comment about the pictures on street grappling, it is clearly stated p133, that these pictures are for your own imagination and that I would not be explaining them. I gave a short description of how to use wrestling Sambo in general in the street. The last comment about the pictures is that me, grabbing and throwing a guy is not self-defence, I don't know how an opponent feels when you are smashing him against a wall, car or pavement to protect yourself, or that a hold that basically dislocates or tears the ligaments of both your opponents elbows is not self defence.
So when you have learnt everything from the book, including 44 throws, takings down and sweeps, 23 submission techniques, 11 holdings down, 11 over turnings in ground work you will be ready for the deep explanation of how to use all Sambo Wrestling techniques for real self protection in street situations.
Thank you for all comments and good luck to everyone!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Sudden Violence: The Art Of San Soo Review

Sudden Violence: The Art Of San Soo

I got this book along with many others shortly after taking san soo classes. And of all the books I've read, this is the best written book on martial arts. It's clear and precise, and the techniques are VERY practical. It's unfortunate that san soo hasn't gotten too much exposure like the other forms of martial arts, because it can be utilize by a beginner effectively. I would recommend this book even if you are learning other forms of art.

The best way to survive a streetfight is to end it before it starts, and that is the essence of san soo kung fu - to brutally take your opponent out before he gets a chance to attack! When some street thug intends to do you bodily harm, it is not the time to pull punches. So be sudden! Be violent! And win.

Everything Krav Maga for Fitness Book: Get fit fast with this high-intensity martial arts workout (Everything (Health)) Review

Everything Krav Maga for Fitness Book: Get fit fast with this high-intensity martial arts workout (Everything (Health))

I have to disagree with the other reviewers here so far. No it doesn't teach you everything you need to know about the Krav Maga techniques for fighting. But neither is it a useless book. As the authors state, the intention of the book is to use as a guide to becoming fit - a useful part of self defence - if not a total necessity. But your chances are far greater if you are fit. This book combines and excellent array of multi-disciplinary exercises which combine in a core routine(s).. a blend of Yoga, Plyometrics, Speed work, running, core conditioning.. It excels in doing what it says it will do: provide you with drill to increase your ability in 'combat'.. However, it provides only basic Krav Maga defences. If you can't get to a class go to one of the official Krav Maga websites and buy the instructional DVDs - combine them with this book and you should have a reasonable grounding in the combat system. Some practice in a safe and controlled manner with a friend should round out your basic KM. But even a couple of seminars a year is better than not going to get live instruction at all. Simply put - it's a good book and a good addition to any Kravist's library - or even someone who just wants to get fit but doesn't have time to combine all the cross training they may like to do!!

Advanced Krav Maga: The Next Level of Fitness and Self-Defense Review

Advanced Krav Maga: The Next Level of Fitness and Self-Defense

Obviously I have read & enjoyed David Kahn's previous book & yes, I am biased based on that. I am biased because it is written in the same fashion as the previous one but at a much more advanced level, & that the learning curve is still NOT steep, but something that EVERYONE can learn & pick up very, very fast. His "No Rules" approach to those that may threaten your life is something that has helped me in quite a few situations, especially since I run a bar in New York City that can occasionally get rowdy. I have also learned how to restrain aggressive people in the most efficient & effective ways without doing any serious damage, but having the power and control to do so in a heartbeat if I felt my life was suddenly threatened. Being a former student of Praying Mantis Kung Fu & loving it, I feel that I have taken my martial arts training to the next level with David kahn's books. This book can definitely be used for fitness, but I find it's the most effective for those that may find themselves in dangerous situations. I also like that David has an approach in which you assume that your attacker may know what you know & how to always counter & use variations. If you are a martial artist or are seriously into MMA, this book is a must read.

Krav Maga: An Essential Guide to the Renowned Method--for Fitness and Self-Defense Review

Krav Maga: An Essential Guide to the Renowned Method--for Fitness and Self-Defense

I did two plus years of krav maga pretty religiously, to green belt level. I got this book, and I would say it is very good. It is the only book out there that details basic krav maga techniques, and for that, I think we should thank the author. I was a bit surprised to hear the Israeli guy say it is not real military krav maga, because I trained several times here in the U.S. with Israeli Seals and paratroopers and I see no real difference between their system and what David teaches (plus, the krav maga I learned is the exact program designed in Israel by Imi for the IDF). Yes, there is a lot of "politics" in martial arts (!), and yes, it is very "par for the course". The author states that he travelled to Israel to learn krav maga, so I also found it odd that someone would say he doesn't know the "Israeli version of krav maga". I found this book to be a really solid intro. to krav maga. It is just, there is nothing like the intensity of a krav maga class. If you have been in a class, the intensity is just so real and important, and you can't get that from a book. I recall doing like 30 seconds of hard knees into a pad someone was holding, with 3 krav guys yelling at me to "stay in the fight". I recall being in a darkened room, with people with pads pushing in on me, with my eyes closed, and someone yells "gun !!", and you have to fight your way out past the people and find the gun guy and defeat him. I recall the adrenaline, the stress, the sweat. You of course can't get all those "military" things in a book, but you can at least see the krav maga program. I think this book is a good introduction to krav maga.

Krav Maga for Beginners: A Step-by-Step Guide to the World's Easiest-to-Learn, Most-Effective Fitness and Fighting Program Review

Krav Maga for Beginners: A Step-by-Step Guide to the World's Easiest-to-Learn, Most-Effective Fitness and Fighting Program
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
As I stated in the title of this review, both the title and contents of this book (for the most part) are pretty much accurate as far as this book being a, "step-by-step guide to Krav Maga for beginners." However, I do feel that the authors went a bit overboard with their subtitle, "the world's easiest-to-learn, most effective fitness and fighting program." That however is merely a minor annoyance compared to the amount of good and great information within its pages.
This book starts off with the obligatory front matter which consists of basic Krav Maga philosophy, principles, history, and so on, along with more unique and personal information such as; important considerations to consider concerning Krav Maga and dealing with a violent encounter. All subjects worthy of much larger sections, however, not in this book, which is designed to showcase basic skills for beginners.
The authors break this book down into four (4) sections as follows:
1.Krav Maga Basics
2.Combatives
3.Defenses
4.Ground Fighting
KRAV MAGA BASICS
Under this section, the authors go over a variety of warm-up and conditioning exercises, as well as various training positions. All of which are designed to get your ready for the next section, combatives.
COMBATIVES
Under this section, the authors go over a variety of skills and principles such as; the various fighting ranges, vulnerable areas, etc. As well as the proper mechanics of executing a variety of punches, elbow strikes, kicks, knees, and even a headbutt. Now I do have to say that this section, in any other book, would have been to brief for my liking. However, the authors have already qualified the briefness of the material presented in this book by emphatically stating that this book is a, "guide for beginners." And therefore, should be treated as such.
DEFENSES
Now rather than go into all of the different defenses shown in this section, I am instead going to talk about the way each of the defenses was presented. Which by the way, I thought was done very well.
Each defense is laid out in the following way:
Attack: This is where the author describes the type of attack coming at you.
Immediate Danger: Here the author emphasizes the attacker's intent with his attack.
Secondary Dangers: This is the results of the attack if it is successful.
Solution: Here the authors present a possible defense.
Initial Counterattack: Like the title says, this could be your first responding counter.
Neutralizing the Attacker: Additional counters that should be made after the first one.
Key Points: Important things to consider in the scenario given.
Commonly Asked Questions: Enough said!
GROUND FIGHTING
In this section, the authors go over a variety of common ground fighting tactics that are fairly easy for the beginner to grasp and eventually become proficient enough in to actually utilize them if the situation warrants.
Even though I am not a beginner when it comes to self-defense and combat, I really enjoyed this book and found it to be very useful and would strongly recommend it to anyone interested in not only Krav Maga, but any legitimate self-defense program.
Here are a few other books on the subject that I would also highly recommend:
Complete Krav Maga: The Ultimate Guide to Over 200 Self-Defense and Combative Techniques
Krav Maga: An Essential Guide to the Renowned Method--for Fitness and Self-Defense
Advanced Krav Maga: The Next Level of Fitness and Self-Defense

Complete Krav Maga: The Ultimate Guide to Over 230 Self-Defense and Combative Techniques

I was able to get a copy of this book last weekend and WOW, it's even more detailed than I thought. I have been involved in the Martial Arts for 30 years now (since I was a kid) and I must say that not only is this book easy to follow and learn from, it includes great "Tips" for training and I must say is factually and pictorially on-the-money accurate!
For a comprehensive guide, it's laid out easily for the beginner to follow through from start to finish. DON'T try to skip through to higher level techniques, the text refers to lower level stuff that you need to know before trying the harder ones...just like Krav Maga is taught on the training floor.
I have a deep understanding of Krav Maga as I've been training in it for the last 10 years, and this book lays out the techniques exactly as they should be done. The pictures are taken from great angles too and show really good progressions. Thank you Darren and John and Krav Maga Worldwide for putting this book out to help all students of Krav Maga better "Walk In Peace".
