Breath: A Novel Review

Australian writer Tim Winton's latest short novel (217 pages), unlike some of his previous novels--CLOUDSTREET and DIRT MUSIC come to mind-- is one that you can devour in one sitting for it will pull you down into it like the undertow that this fantastic writer writes about with such breathtaking beauty. We see the events unfold through the eyes of Bruce, now a gnarly-- one of Winton's favorite words-- paramedic in his 50's who recalls events that transpired when he was a budding teenager in the small town of Sawyer, Australia.
The novel begins with Bruce and a woman partner answering an emergency call from a distraught family whose teenaged son apparently has committed suicide by hanging. Then the narrator jumps back in time to his youth and talks for many pages about his friend Loonie and their strange relationship-- a sort of hero worship on the part of Bruce-- with an exotic former surfing champion Sando who pushes the boys to newer and more dangerous heights as they take on more and more difficult waves as they strive to rise from being just ordinary. Then there is Sando's American wife Eva.
BREATH is a strange novel indeed. If you are wondering what a teenager's suicide has to do with all this surfing on the Australia coast, as I was, just be patient for Mr. Winton ties up all the loose ends with a powerful wallop. The novel is a coming-of-age novel about sexual awakening, the danger associated with the emotions if they are left to run rampant when you are thirteen or fourteen, the scars that remain in adulthood.
I am always fascinated when writers from other parts of the world write about Americans. Eva tells Bruce what it was like growing up in Salt Lake City, Mormons and American ambition. "But the way Eva told it, her countrymen were restless, nomadic, clogging freeways and airports in their fevered search for action. She said they were driven by ambition in a way that no Australian could possibly understand. . . She made her own people sound vicious. Yet God was in everything - all the talk, all the music, even on their money. Ambition, she said. Aspiration and mortal anxiety." Mr. Winton has homed in admirably on the contemporary American psyche.
Tim Winton's language is always appropriate and often completely beautiful--from creating new verbs (rag-dolling) to describing surfing when Bruce contrasts the practicality of Sawyer's farmers, loggers and millers who "did solid, practical things" with the beauty and grace of surfers. "How strange it was to see men do something beautiful. Something pointless and elegant, as though nobody saw or cared." And he expresses his own feelings about surfing: "but for me there was still the outlaw feeling of doing something graceful, as if dancing on water was the best and bravest thing a man could do."
Tim Winton is one terrific writer.

Yoga Teachers' Toolbox Review

Yoga Teachers' Toolbox

I received my yoga teacher certification in '99 in Integrative Yoga Therapy with Joseph LePage. As part of our training, we are given a 300 page manual. While extremely comprehensive, it can be a bit daunting to use weekly in planning yoga classes. Joseph's Yoga Teachers' Toolbox is convenient, concise, yet thorough. Each "flashcard" explains which chakras are affected, how to teach the posture, excellent modifications with photos, and these flashcards are easily copied to be carried to class. I can't recommend this toolbox enough. No matter which teacher training you have completed, this will be an excellent resource for beginning and experienced teachers.

So much training in the U.S. is dominated by bodybuilding practices and principles. In "Explosive Lifiting for Sports," Newton breaks down the ONLY way to train athletes, EXPLOSIVELY, with much of the training being dominated by Olympic Lifting (the Clean and Jerk and the Snatch.) High-Tech Cycling Review

High-Tech Cycling

This book covers the major areas of interest to cyclists and coaches. The ordering of the chapters is a little haphazard , but it covers nutrition , biomechanics , energy dissipation , position and suspension. If you want to know the whys of cycling , this is the book to read .So many cycling books seem to rely on subjective comment , this uses objective measurement and presents the data in such a way that the reader can easily extend the text and apply it to their needs. Each chapter is written by different writers and the stylistic differences can be a bit offputting on times , but the shear amount of objective information is astounding . You can use the data to quantify the effect of a few ounces of your bike weight , how much difference the latest whizzo wheels will make etc etc . Cycling in general suffers from fasion , this works in favour of the manufacturers , this book will enable you to cut through the rhetoric and give predictions of the effect for you. It is by far the best book on cycling I have ever read . No other book I have seen comes close to being a useful for the serious cyclist . There are a few weaknesses , the major one being no description of typical training regimes for various ability cyclists , and no work correlating training intensity and duration with improvements in performance . But for describing the physics and biology of cycling , it is excellent , I look forward to future publications that cover some of the missing sections. No serious coach should be without this book , no cyclist can afford not to have it .

Winning on the Mat: Judo, Freestyle Judo And Submission Grappling Review

Winning on the Mat: Judo, Freestyle Judo And Submission Grappling

This book is full of useful information for people that already know the basics of the throws. There are better basic instruction books but, this book has lots of variations and tips and the classic throws. Kudos for Mr Scott taking the time to show and discuss them.
My only negative is that the pictures are black and white and sometimes are actual competition throws where the bodies are so entwined it is hard to dissect the technique. If would have been much better in color, but that would have made the book cost much more.
Lastly, for those following Olympic rules, i.e. USA JUDO, USJA, ETC, this book uses AAU Freestyle rules, which the author clearly states in the beginning. So, don't try to use a leg grab or something shown in the book at a non AAU Freestyle competition, or you will get disqualified. Doh!!!!

Prevention's Firm Up in 3 Weeks: Trim and Tone Your Trouble Zones for Your Best Body Ever

I have hit that phase in my life where my metabolism has drastically slowed down, leaving me with 30 pounds of flesh that I don't feel deserving of.
This book really convinced me on the importance of weight training in order to maintain my metabolism. I have perused a number of weight training books and this one, I feel, is one of the best. While most books go through weight training exercises utilizing equipment available only at a gym, this book uses only dumbells and a mat---perfect for an inexpensive home workout!!! I love the fact that the book presents a set workout (complete with pictures) and a diet menu for every day of the 3 weeks that your body is transformed. It also includes a weekly grocery shopping list of foods that are included in the daily menus. I definitely feel more toned and trim after 2 weeks. While I have yet to weigh myself, many people have commented that I look as though I've lost some weight. Yeah me.

Coming back from sciatica and working with arthritic knees this book has been a real help. I do pool arobic classes 3 days per week but use this book as a supplement for the other days. The book is easy to follow. I keep it by the pool and refer to it during my exercise hour.
