Yogaflows Review

Yogaflows
Average Reviews:

This book is innovative, creative, beautifully illustrated and crafted. There are sequences for beginners and for more advanced practitioners, sets of warm-ups and various "flows" with clever and appropriate names, complete with recommendations for breathing practices.
Flowing yoga sequences are printed on fold-out pages which is interesting, but you still need to weight the book open if you're going to refer to it while you practice. Paging through the book is a bit tricky because of the double thickness. The frustration of this book is a side-effect of its uniqueness, the sequences are placed on the page in a "figure eight" layout and this is difficult to follow. The well worded, descriptive instructions are sometimes hard to find as a result of the fold-out pages, (they are not given with the corresponding poses) and some transitions which one needs to go from pose to pose are in the back of the book (flipping back and forth required). If you're willing to take the time to study the book and learn the sequences, you'll get plenty from this book. I'm considering clipping the pages from mine and reorganizing them so I can follow the poses without standing on my head...

In this unique and refreshing approach to yoga, breath, awareness, and movement are combined to radically transform the practice. Individual poses are seamlessly linked within specially-created sequences that generate relaxation, inner calm, and mental focus.Classic hatha yoga poses were carefully chosen to connect in sequences of 13 to 20 poses to create a dynamic and fluid practice. Based on years of studio teaching and advanced training, the flows - ranging in difficulty from basic through to intensive - are shown here in separate gatefold spread units that can be easily followed by the reader. Yogaflows features: - 12 continual sequences progressing from beginning to advanced, are illustrated on easy-to-use gatefolds - Detailed instructions for breathing techniques- Specific warm-ups to prepare for practice at all levels- Challenging transitions between poses are explained in a separate Focus on Flows section - Fully illustrated 123-pose glossary - The author herself demonstrates all poses in the book

Yogilates(R): Integrating Yoga and Pilates for Complete Fitness, Strength, and Flexibility
Average Reviews:

As the author of this book, I am responding to the Publishers Weekly review of my book on Yogilates. This reviewer must have never read any yoga or Pilates exercise books before if they can't manage to follow the simple instructions that I have presented in this book. Compared to most other mind/body fitness books, I wrote this book in a straight-forward way with clear and simple instructions even a total beginner could understand. Perhaps the reviewer doesn't want to have to think about breathing or alignment while exercising. Even so, these are easily followed (inhale during one move, exhale for the other). Moreover, there are several chapters before the exercises start that explain philosophical background, how to check your flexibility, and establish awareness of basic movements. These chapters will add to anyones' overall understanding of Yogilates and help prepare the reader for a safe and effective practice.
My hope is that people will ignore this reviewer's completely off base comments and see the book themselves. I feel I can safely guarantee that you will find it to be written in a user-friendly manner. And you will also find the photos and models to be clear and serene, not grim at all.
Thank you and Namaste,
Jonathan Urla, Author

Lilias! Yoga Gets Better With Age
By Lilias Folan
Rodale Books, July 2005
Reviewed by Sharon Steffensen
Yoga gets better with age--and so does Lilias. In her new book she shares what she has learned along the path since the early days of her TV show, Lilias! Yoga and You, which first aired on PBS in 1972. By the mid-1980s the series was airing daily nationwide. It is likely that for people age 40 and older, Lilias is the most well-known yoga teacher in the U.S., having introduced millions to yoga.
Because she is familiar to so many of us, we trust Lilias as an authority on yoga. In her book she has adapted yoga postures so they can be practiced safely by people of any age. In her easy manner, Lilias clears up misconceptions about yoga. (Even today, some people are afraid of yoga because of its Indian roots.) Lilias writes about the koshas (the sheaths, or subtle bodies) and explains how to connect with these deeper layers of the Self. Lilias discusses the spiritual benefits and gives techniques for healing our emotions, connecting with our wisdom and feeling our bliss.
Lilias has also developed some new movements, one of which she calls the "three R's" --resist, relax and restretch--that free up muscles and allow much greater movement than ever imagined possible. She describes her style as yin--defined as cool, calm, inward and focused (for stretching)--as opposed to a yang approach, which is heated and intense (for strength). Therefore, her book is geared toward people who are 40 and over as well as to younger people who are looking for a gentler, yet powerful, approach to yoga.
Lilias demonstrates all the poses in 200 full-color photos. She looks fabulous as always. Like her TV show, her book is friendly, down-to-earth and very likeable.

That is why Lilias Folan--the most beloved and admired American yoga teacher ever--has created "yin" yoga, a specific, safe, and creative way to stretch and strengthen within each yoga posture. Essential Yoga: An Illustrated Guide to Over 100 Yoga Poses and Meditations Review

Essential Yoga: An Illustrated Guide to Over 100 Yoga Poses and Meditations
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Essential Yoga is an excellent guide to the novice student looking to expand their yoga practice. This book covers the Pranayama (Breathing Ch.1), Asanas (Warm ups Ch.2 Poses Ch.3), Dhyana (Meditations Ch.4) and Vinyasas (Flowing Poses Ch. 5) as well as Recommend Sequences (Ch. 6 & 7). It omits other stages of yoga such as Yamas and Niyamas, Pratyahara, Dharana, and Samadhi which would give the beginner a fuller picture of yoga. However, the authors state this book is for "someone who wants to do yoga and not just read about it".
Overall, I really enjoyed the graphics, general appearance, and construction of the book. This one seems to be well built in its lay-flat format which is good when you find yourself on the mat. The choice of yellow header may be hard for some readers since it does not reflect strongly against the white pages. The red text and graphics do appear well but the text might be small for some readers.
There are some very good breathing exercises (Ch.1) for more advance students of yoga. Usually, advance techniques like these are introduced to the novice student after becoming well versed in poses and basic breathing techniques.
The Asanas (Ch.2 & 3) have nice graphics of the postures with modifications. I liked the Sanskrit Names under the English Names of the poses. The benefits of each pose are presented in the beginning but no warnings which should have been included. The descriptions for getting into the posture are minimal which is nice since you want the basics to spend more time doing them, which is fine for the more advance yoga practioner but beginners might feel somewhat lost.
The Meditations (Ch. 4) were wonderful. The explanations were fantastic and the descriptions were very solid. It really allows the reader to visualize and affirm the thoughts during the meditation. I really enjoyed them.
The Vinyasas (Ch. 5) are described very well and the artwork was clean and crisp. It is nice to see a yoga book include more than the basic Sun Salutation. However, the poses didn't have their page numbers next to them to help the user reference them which seems odd because later in the book they are there for the Chapters Yoga Sessions and Recommended Sequences. No big deal, but the omissions itself is quirky.
The Yoga Sessions and Recommended Sequences (Ch. 6 & 7) are basically designed for students that allow them to work on specific conditions, goals, such as athletic improvements or time constraints. The poses do have corresponding page numbers for quick reference if you are rusty on certain poses. Beginners might be discouraged by this since they would be flipping back and forth too many times.
Beginners should always find a good teacher to start learning yoga. This allows the teacher to answer questions and make adjustments for them to get the maximum benefit from their yoga practice, then progress to books, videos, and retreats as ways to supplement their yoga practice.
Bottom line, this book would make a nice addition to your yoga library and give you some nice inspiration to help expand your yoga practice.

I received my yoga teacher certification in '99 in Integrative Yoga Therapy with Joseph LePage. As part of our training, we are given a 300 page manual. While extremely comprehensive, it can be a bit daunting to use weekly in planning yoga classes. Joseph's Yoga Teachers' Toolbox is convenient, concise, yet thorough. Each "flashcard" explains which chakras are affected, how to teach the posture, excellent modifications with photos, and these flashcards are easily copied to be carried to class. I can't recommend this toolbox enough. No matter which teacher training you have completed, this will be an excellent resource for beginning and experienced teachers.

Diamond Dallas Page's "Yoga for Regular Guys" is a very well illustrated intro guide to yoga, focusing on only a few major patterns, but spending a lot more time illustrating them and talking through how to get the most out of them than many other yoga guides I've perused. Its pragmatic approach makes it an ideal intro guide for guys (or women) who want to get into Yoga but have no idea where to start.

Megayoga Review

For too long yoga instruction has ignored the needs of larger woman. I have been in yoga classes where the question "what do I do with my boobs?" was greeted with a puzzled look from my teacher.
Last year, I once again embarked on a yoga journey with the Just My Size Yoga DVD. I love it! Now, the instructor of that DVD has a book that builds on the poses and workouts highlighted in the DVD.
If you have ever been in a yoga class and felt out of place because of you size, this book is for you. If you want to enjoy the benefits of yoga, but learn adaptations for your curvy figure, this book is for you. If you want to feel good, and feel better about yourself, this book is for you!
MegaYoga stresses the benefits of yoga. Yoga improves health, releases stress, and builds self-esteem. MegaYoga does not, however, emphasize weight loss. Rather than setting a goal for someone you CAN BE, MegaYoga helps you love the person you ARE. It teaches the reader to love her body the way it is, and to not compare herself to others who are "thinner" or "more beautiful."
The book starts out with the journey of Megan Garcia, a beautiful plus size woman and yoga teacher. Next, the reader is introduced to "MegaYoga." MegaYoga teaches the traditional Hetha Yoga, but it acknowledges the special needs of the larger student. Posture, practice, props, and "moving the flesh" are all covered with a gentle, compassionate spirit.
The workout is broken down into "warm-up," "standing poses," "wall poses and inversions," "cleansing poses," and "quiet poses." While learning the poses, the book also provides a plan to help the learner grow with yoga. There are three workouts provide in the book, a 30 minute work out for the first 6 months, 60 minute workout for 6 - 18 months, and a 90 minute workout to go beyond 18 months.
I highly recommend this book for all the big, beautiful woman out there who want to reap the benefits of yoga.

This unique and inspiring program is designed specifically for larger women whose needs have not been met by mainstream yoga instructors. The Complete Idiot's Guide to Yoga Illustrated, Third Edition Review

The Complete Idiot's Guide to Yoga Illustrated, Third Edition
Average Reviews:

I read the Complete Idiot's Guide to Yoga over a year ago. I have found myself practicing yoga faithfully and referring to the book ever since. The book gives a wonderful overview of this centuries old practice. I particularly liked the book for the authors' humor and openmindedness. As can be found in their other book, Complete Idiot's Guide to Meditation. All the information needed to start practicing yoga today is provided without making the reader feel as though they must change religions or make other drastic changes in their lives. Facts and ideas are presented in such a way that the reader can take as little or as much from the book as he wants.
I found the explainations of postures, breathing exercises and other yoga aspects to be clear and detailed (enough for a beginner). I was particularly impressed with the instructions for the postures as modifications are included. A lot of books don't do that. The book is truly an introduction to yoga - there is so much more to be learned. In fact, it has lead me to read many other wonderful books about yoga. As well as research yoga on web sites listed in the book (including Joan Budilovsky's site - wonderful, & you actually get answers to your letters).
The CIGY offers an EXCELLENT place to begin. I have recommended this book to several friends who have asked me about my yoga practice. I would recommend it again and again.

OM Yoga: A Guide to Daily Practice Review

OM Yoga: A Guide to Daily Practice
Average Reviews:

I love this book! I take a weekly class, but this book gave me the tools to incorporate yoga into my daily schedule. The routines are short (15 minutes or so, though you can make them longer if you want to), there's variety so each day focuses on different challenges, and everything's well explained.
My favorite features are: 1. there's a single-glance spread of the day's poses (no flipping while you're doing the routine!) as well as detailed drawings/descriptions of each pose so you can check your form, 2. the spiral binding, which makes it easy to lie open flat and flip as needed, 3. there are 'variations' of the more difficult poses, so it truly can be used by beginners and more advanced practitioners, and 4. it isn't overly wordy - just practical and straightforward.
If you're interested in trying yoga out, take the occasional class, or are just looking for a new way to approach your practice, TRY THIS!!

As a relatively new Yogi, reading "The No Om Zone" has really helped to improve my practice. It provides a level of instruction that can often be hard to get in a packed yoga class. It is chockfull of photos that have been very useful in understanding the exact positioning of each body part during a pose. I feel my alignment has definitely improved since reading the book. Also, anatomy and physiology are discussed in a very useful, easy-to-understand manner, not in the cumbersome, overwhelming way of many fitness books. Cure Back Pain with Yoga Review

Cure Back Pain with Yoga
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Thank you to Dr. Loren Fishman for this invaluable guide to preventing and curing back pain with yoga. The beauty of this book, unlike many others, is that it actually acknowledges that there are major types of back pain instead of lumping muscle spasm with arthritis or herniated disc, etc. This book respects the differences, and that is common sense, because what's good for back pain in pregnancy is obviously not the same as what will relieve the pain of a herniated disc. Dr. Fishman's approach is clearly safer and more effective.
For a beginner like me, the simple, lucid discussion of what yoga is was extremely illuminating. I found the explanations of the various types of back pain - arthritis, sacroiliac joint derangement, etc. - easy to read and coherent. . If you don't know what's wrong with you, Dr. Fishman steers you in the right direction with lucid explanations of causes of back pain, including muscular problems, arthritis, sacroiliac joint derangement, etc. He even provides advice (and yoga poses) for people who have recently had back surgery.
The poses themselves are described and/or shown for beginners or for those who are more disabled and at a higher level of difficulty for those who are more advanced. This book is a pleasure to read and to use.

You only compete with YOU. At the end of each chapter is a page called INSIGHT: coordinating your body and mind in harmony for exa: the key point is to move into and out of a pose, with your mind and body. Yoga Anytime, Anywhere by Carol Blackman and Elise Browning Miller is not just another book about how to do yoga exercizes. This one is REALLY designed for people on the go in busy lives who don't feel they have time to take out for exercize. The authors have creatievely presented traditional yoga moves to be done anywhere when you have two minutes or an hour. You can do some of these in the work place, on the plane, in a hotel room, or sitting at your desk! With great emphasis on proper breathing (prana) throughout, the book also has chapters on yoga for regulating your hormones during menstrual cycle relief, pregnancy, and healthy menopause. For when you are tired you'll also find chapters on Energizing Your Whole Body with postures that work "better than caffeine and are completely organic!" There are special poses for stretching and preparing for sports. And finally you'll find techniques for just relaxing and finding balance in your life. Each pose and exercize throughout the book is photographically illustrated, so the book serves well for "do it yourself" and requires no equipment. You'll love this book! This book is all about letting go by doing nothing purposefully. Judith Lasater, a very experienced Iyengar yoga teacher, shows the reader in words and pictures how to use everyday props (e.g., blankets, pillows, walls and floors) to travel the highway to the state of relaxation. I had the opportunity to practice restorative yoga with Ms. Lasater in Montana about two years ago and I can attest to the fact this yoga works to relax both the mental and physical muscles in the body if practiced regularly. Since most people can't go off to Montana to practice yoga, this book is the next best thing to being there.
