OM Yoga: A Guide to Daily Practice Review

OM Yoga: A Guide to Daily Practice

I love this book! I take a weekly class, but this book gave me the tools to incorporate yoga into my daily schedule. The routines are short (15 minutes or so, though you can make them longer if you want to), there's variety so each day focuses on different challenges, and everything's well explained.
My favorite features are: 1. there's a single-glance spread of the day's poses (no flipping while you're doing the routine!) as well as detailed drawings/descriptions of each pose so you can check your form, 2. the spiral binding, which makes it easy to lie open flat and flip as needed, 3. there are 'variations' of the more difficult poses, so it truly can be used by beginners and more advanced practitioners, and 4. it isn't overly wordy - just practical and straightforward.
If you're interested in trying yoga out, take the occasional class, or are just looking for a new way to approach your practice, TRY THIS!!

With the Master in the School of Tested Faith Review

With the Master in the School of Tested Faith

Women who write Bible studies for women are in high demand these days. It seems that every time I visit our local Christian retailer there is a new, "insightful," "life-changing," Bible study written specifically for women. I have participated in many of these studies. Some are better than others. However, after attending one frustrating (to me) lesson after another I finally learned that a popular Bible study does not always make for a "life-changing" Bible study. In fact, you could question whether the Bible was really studied at all. At the end of many so-called Bible studies I have learned far more about the author of the study than God and His Word or how my life needs to change in order to follow Him more closely. This is not the case with Susan Heck's With the Master series, and that is why it thrills me to introduce you to her first installment, With the Master in the School of Tested Faith, A Ladies' Bible Study of the Epistle of James.
What makes this study stand head-and-shoulders above the rest, in my opinion? First, this is an expository study through the book of James. Heck moves verse-by-verse through each chapter, carefully teaching and guiding the reader to understand what God is saying through James. It is not a topical study, though Heck covers the topics that James discusses in his letter. It is not about developing a certain trait, even though Heck covers the many characteristics which ought to mark believers because James discusses them in his letter. Heck only draws out what James put in his letter. She remains faithful to the text, sharing Greek words and meanings, cross-references, and relevant cultural issues.
Secondly, while Heck includes personal stories, she does not over-do it, nor does she share stories in an effort to elicit an emotional response (one aspect of women's studies I have disliked). What she does share is succinct and to the point, showing exactly how it relates to what James is writing and why it's important to the reader.
Thirdly, Heck's desire to see women grow in faith and in God's Word is evident in the emphasis she places on memorizing scripture and in the questions she asks for further consideration. The student of this study will read the book of James over and over again throughout the time of the study. She will know his letter backwards and forwards. Furthermore, if she doesn't memorize the entire book, she will have memorized at least 35 of its verses. Her questions at the end of each chapter are hard rather than soft, but don't let that discourage you from doing it. By hard, I mean to say that she doesn't ask for how a verse makes one feel. Rather, she asks what a verse means, what it teaches, how does your life measure up, and what will you do differently. Though this is a study of James, Heck leads the reader through several books of the Bible, cross-referencing and drawing parallels. She asks for the reader to list words, search for answers in God's word, and read her Bible. There are no fill-in-the-blank questions.
She follows the study with a postscript which includes a final test for each chapter of James. "Since the Epistle of James is a series of tests to test our faith, I will now give you a test--teachers have the prerogative to administer tests, right?" These questions are not the same ones at the end of the chapters. These are more specific, direct questions. The kind of questions that make me squirm in my self-righteousness.
Tested Faith is a challenging, and, dare I say it, "life-changing," women's Bible study. I say "life-changing," not because of Susan Heck, though her book is excellent, but because the book of James is so piercing. I came away from it feeling like I had been beaten up one side and down the other. James doesn't pull any punches, so Heck doesn't either. She makes no attempt to dull the sword of God's Word. Each chapter is one spiritual test after another. Though my times with God during this study didn't give me warm fuzzies every day, He did bring my attention to a great many things that I was neglecting or were just wrong in my life. She may never be the most popular, but Susan Heck has filled the vacuum of solid Bible studies for women. I am so thankful for this Bible study and I am very happy to recommend it.

The Ultimate Body Shaping Bible: Get in the Best Shape of Your Life with Targeted Workouts That Tone and Tighten Everything Review

The Ultimate Body Shaping Bible: Get in the Best Shape of Your Life with Targeted Workouts That Tone and Tighten Everything

I am a personal trainer who is big into weight training (for women and men). I am always happy to see new books that open the door to women, making the workout scene more approachable. This book is GREAT for newcomers to working out, giving lots of beginner pointers and direction. I like how it is laid out with the different levels, although I'd hardly limit your workout to the things listed in this book.
If you are new, or just getting back into it, then this is a great start--very easy to read, very easy to follow directions. It is broken down into various body parts (I like that) and then into the author's idea of beginner-advanced workouts. (I personally think you can go much farther and get much more from your workout if you don't stop at "advanced" and introduce different routines.)
There were some things in this book that I hadn't seen before and will integrate into my client's workouts, (as well as my own).
Easy to follow, easy to read, easy to learn...Great beginner book.

The Fitball Workout: The Easy Way to a Toned, Flexible Body Review

LOTS of photos. Probably one of the best basic books. Most of the exercises can be found elsewhere, but the photos make it very clear what to do. I prefer this over the more wordy and significant books. If you want a lot of theory, this isn't your book. If you just want good clear instructions on what you can do (and the expected results), then this book is perfect.

Strength Training for Women Review

Strength Training for Women

Let me start off by saying that this book is available for free online, which is where I have read it, and I intend to buy it so that I have a reference copy. (I almost appreciate it being available free enough to buy it just because I support that).
I have recently joined a health club, and really wanted to try weight training. I had been feeling very intimidated, and this book has pretty much fixed that. I'm the type of person who likes to have a lot of information and think things through thoroughly, especially when I am a little nervous about them. All the background information about the different types of training and exercises really helped me to feel comfortable, though I can see how it might not seem relevant to those who have already been training for a while, or who are not the information junkies that I am.
The sample training plans and the descriptions and images of each exercise were probably the most helpful part of this book. I was able to read it, practice some of the movements I wasn't sure about at home without weight, and then hit the gym. I'm completely a beginner, and the level of information in this book was just what I was looking for to get me started since I can't really afford to hire a trainer.

Bikini Bootcamp: Two Weeks to Your Ultimate Beach Body Review

Bikini Bootcamp: Two Weeks to Your Ultimate Beach Body
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The authors have done a good job of integrating mind/body into a holistic approach to health. Recipes are excellent, food is delicious and workouts are hard! Not for the faint of heart. This regimine will require 100% effort to succeed, particularly if you work full time and have a family. Each morning you are required to write in a journal, meditate and do 15 minutes of yoga. In addition each day requires a 30 - 60 minute walk, a 40 minute strength routine, and on alternate days an additional "core" workout for the abs. Plan on spending about 2 hours a day on just these parts. In addition, there is a lot of prep. time in the kitchen. All food is very close to it's natural state and is loaded with veggies, fresh marinades, and sald dressings. Each of these is made from scratch and requires a lot of time. Still, it is an excellent program and I don't see how they could have done it any easier. I suggest buying the fresh ginger and garlic, chopped in jars (as they suggest) and vegetables already chopped etc. to make it easier. Expect your kitchen to be full of dishes constantly if you follow their eating plan closely.

I'm a pilates instructor of mat classes. I've been certified through 2 different organizations. This is a great book! I like the part on the reformer on the mat. It's well written and i also like reading on the differences between men and women with refrence to the exercises. Good purchase!

A comprehensive, take-anywhere exercise program designed to improve men's strength, flexibility, balance, and posture

Have years of office work wreaked havoc on your posture? Could your tennis or golf game use a boost? Do you appear or feel older than your age? Or do you carry yourself in a manner that expresses strength, power, and peak performance to everyone around you?

In recent years, Pilates has become a popular exercise program, especially among women. Many books on the subject show lithe female bodies stretched across their covers. Top Pilates instructor Daniel Lyon Jr. aims to break the preconception that Pilates only benefits and appeals to women. "This couldn't be further from the truth," he asserts. "Joseph Pilates was a cigar-smoking boxer, acrobat, and gymnast, and he developed his exercise program from that background for men first." Likewise, Lyon designed this book specifically with men in mind, as the number of male Pilates practitioners -- among them professional athletes, actors, businessmen, and other high-profile personalities -- has rocketed to about three million and continues to grow.

For athletes, working stiffs, and men recovering from injuries, Lyon offers the first comprehensive exercise program of its kind. He walks you through forty "traditional mat" exercises and more than sixty "reformer on the mat" exercises -- each one brilliantly illustrated -- in an inspiring self-guided program that adapts to all experience levels and requires nothing more than floor space, an exercise mat, and the desire to look and feel your best. Using the Pilates method of engaging the strongest parts of the body, or the "powerhouse" (Joseph Pilates's term for the abdominals, hips, lower back muscles, and buttocks), and integrating all other body parts from this core, Lyon's program targets trouble spots for men and helps them achieve strong, lean, masculine physiques.

The Complete Book of Pilates for Men will deliver quick and long-term results to any man who seeks optimal fitness and a competitive edge in all aspects of his life.

The Woman's Yoga Book: Asana and Pranayama for All Phases of the Menstrual Cycle Review

The Woman's Yoga Book: Asana and Pranayama for All Phases of the Menstrual Cycle
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The Woman's Yoga Book: Asana and Pranayama for All Phases of the Menstrual Cycle is a book that every woman will want to own. With detailed illustrations, excellent guidelines and practices for any type of reproductive issue, author Bobby Clennell has written THE book that works directly with your cycle. Clennell is a senior Iyengar instructor who has studied directly with the Iyengars, most notably, Geeta Iyengar, who writes the forward to this book. Iyengar has written her own book for women, Yoga - A Gem For Women, and although that is a very useful book, I have found Clennell's book to be more user friendly.
There is an intro with discussion on how menstruation has been viewed over the years by each culture as well as the physical dynamics. The illustrations are really nice - there are variations of poses and in some cases, she shows how to come in and out of each pose. Every picture is clear and easy to understand. Instructions are concise - Clennell makes even the most complicated poses simple to comprehend. Any possible discomfort that you may have during your cycle is covered along with a suggested routine. There are practices for mood swings, breast tenderness, fatigue, migraines and more. And best of all, these routines do work!
Sadly, there is not a lot of information on perimenopause or menopause - but I guess since this is a book about menstruation, I shouldn't expect it. Perhaps Clennell could address these issues in a future book? After using The Woman's Yoga Book with great success, one can only hope!

In The Woman's Yoga Book, senior Iyengar Yoga teacher Bobby Clennell offers a comprehensive program of asana (yoga poses) and pranayama (breathing techniques) designed to support menstrual health from menarche to menopause, along with nutritional and lifestyle information for those times off the yoga mat. With over 30 years of teaching experience, she encourages women to draw on the strength that comes from practicing women's yoga. A former professional animator, Bobby Clennell has used her skill in rendering 735 illustrations that teach right along with her text.

Women's Strength Training Anatomy Review

Women's Strength Training Anatomy
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I give this book 2 stars because half of it is missing. Don't expect to be able to use this book to get the nicely toned arms, chests and shoulders so beautifully illustrated here because there are NO upper body exercises included at all. The half of the book there is, IS very good, with beautiful and clear illustrations and easy to undertand. (I do wish that the sketched woman working on her "adductors at a machine", on page 69, had been drawn wearing an exercise bra.) I should have read the other reviews here. Now I'm going to buy Strength Training Anatomy to find out what's been left out. *Sigh* it seems like another chapter of the same old story: women are always having to wait longer for women's versions of products and then paying extra for them. And just like clothing--less material, lower quality and higher prices. Hey! Maybe these guys don't want us to have strong upper bodies! That way we could punch them out for pulling stunts like these.

Dipa Ma: The Life and Legacy of a Buddhist Master Review

Dipa Ma: The Life and Legacy of a Buddhist Master
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is an excellent read, very inspirational and well worth the price. I think some of the reviwers slightly missed the point - whilst Dipa Ma probably didnt eat meat, Theravadin Buddhists are not vegetarian because like the Buddha himself, they rely on alms donations for food. There is no prohibition on eating meat or fish in either the vinaya or the sutras, monks and nuns in Thailand and Burma are mostly meat eaters. As for the change in title, its really just a reprint with colour photos and a new publisher - its not done to rip anybody off, the newer version I think is a better tribute to Dipa Ma's spiritual legacy. Anyhow, for anybody wanting to read about a lay meditatior who was highly acomplished and masterd the siddhis (spiritual para normal powers), the janas (absorbtions) and three of the four paths to nirvana, this is the book!
Other highly recommended books to people who enjoy this one are "Life of a Siamese Monk" by Richard Randall and also Maha Bowas facinating biography of Ajan Mun, a Thai forest monk who attained nirvana and passed away in the late 1940's. Maha Bowas book is given away freely and a great read, I think its also on the internet.

The Women's Health Big Book of Exercises: Four Weeks to a Leaner, Sexier, Healthier YOU Review

The Women's Health Big Book of Exercises: Four Weeks to a Leaner, Sexier, Healthier YOU
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Very comprehensive overview of hundreds of exercises that can be done using gym equipment, home equipment (stability balls, dumbbells, etc.), and/or no equipment. The photos detailing each exercise are in full color and the accompanying explanations are detailed, specific, and easy to follow.
The book is broken down into chapters dedicated to body parts: Chest, Back, Shoulders, Arms, Quadriceps & Calves, Glutes & Hamstrings, Core, as well as chapters for Total Body and Warmup Exercises. There is also a chapter on how to put various exercises together for specific-goal workouts (e.g. "The Get Your Body Back Workout", "The Skinny Jeans Workout", "The Bikini-Ready Workout", "The Best Sports Workout", "The Best Three-Exercise Workouts"). In addition, there are chapters dedicated to Nutrition, Cardio Workouts, the importance of Weights, etc.
All in all, this is an extremely comprehensive book that is not at all about gimmicks or shortcuts but is simply well researched and well presented. It will literally replace several books I've bought on this subject in past years. I'm not easily impressed by books on this subject and yet I'm extremely impressed by this compilation. Well done Adam Campbell and contributors!
