The Pregnant Couple's Guide to Working Out Together Review

The Pregnant Couple's Guide to Working Out Together

My wife and I started using this book last week. It's full of great information and lots of pictures. My wife was feeling really fat with all the baby weight adn she really wanted to work out a little bit. Not really to get buffed, but to just get her blood flowing and increase her heart rate. We told this to our doctor and she suggested this book. My favorite part of this book is all the workouts are geared to the "couple" and this makes it fun.

8 Weeks to a Younger Body Review

8 Weeks to a Younger Body
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Joan's programs are terrific! I have her first book, Strength Training for Women, which helped me figure out how to add weight training to my exercise routine. In her latest book, 8 Weeks to a Younger Body, Joan expands the topic to overall fitness - cardio and flexibility, in addition to endurance. She explains how each of us can develop a total workout regimen based on our fitness category. First, she shows you how to determine your body's functional age (not necessarily your last birthday number) and how your current fitness level compares to the norms for various age groups. The bulk of the book is comprised of beautiful color photos that demonstrate exercise plans for each fitness level (age) category. In this book, Joan shows how, by sticking with one of her masterfully-designed plans for just 8 weeks, each of us can revitalize our body and achieve an enhanced or even younger fitness level. Like before, her guidance in this book is first-rate. I also appreciate her practicality - focusing on doing workouts at home (no drives to the gym or sweating in front of strangers!) and keeping the investment in equipment and materials minimal, to save money and keep storage from becoming an issue. Great job, Joan...keep `em coming!

The Young Athlete: A Sports Doctor's Complete Guide for Parents Review

The Young Athlete: A Sports Doctor's Complete Guide for Parents
Average Reviews:

Informative and easy to read
The Young Athlete is packed with information on every aspect of children and sports, and it's fun to read because the authors have a sense of humor while still being serious. The chapter on nutrition is the clearest explanation of the subject I've ever read. There's a great section (the authors say to xerox and keep in your sports bag) on what to do in case of concussion, bruised ribs, etc.; when to go to the emergency room; how much water to drink. It's also wise and practical about keeping sports in perspective and avoiding the win-at-all-costs syndrome. If you have a child playing youth sports, get this book.

The Fitball Workout: The Easy Way to a Toned, Flexible Body Review

The Fitball Workout: The Easy Way to a Toned, Flexible Body
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
LOTS of photos. Probably one of the best basic books. Most of the exercises can be found elsewhere, but the photos make it very clear what to do. I prefer this over the more wordy and significant books. If you want a lot of theory, this isn't your book. If you just want good clear instructions on what you can do (and the expected results), then this book is perfect.

In "The Fitball Workout" Jan Endacott shows readers how the Fitball can be used in an extraordinary range of exercises that are suitable for all levels of fitness. Stretching Review

Stretching
Average Reviews:

Stretching improves flexibility and energizes the body, but it is also important for good posture. ~Suzanne Martin
Suzanne Martin has cataloged almost every stretch known to humans in one book. Page after page of head-to-toe stretches are shown in full-color photography. You can either stretch during daily activities or create an entire stretching routine.
Contents:
What Is Stretching?
Head-To-Toe Catalog of Stretches
21-Day Posture Program
Basic Stretching Routines
Stretches for Sports - Tennis, Golf, Swimming
Stretches for Daily Activities - Computer use, Long Drives, Telephone Calls, Lifting,
Standing, Sitting, Hauling.
Stretches for Pregnancy
Therapeutic Stretches for Neck and Shoulders
By stretching the body, you can stay healthy and supple, prevent injury while playing sports or relieve pain and improve your posture. No matter what you hope to achieve, Suzanne Martin's book makes it possible.
Each picture has details, like "where you will feel the stretching taking place." There are also ideas about how stretching can prevent lower back pain or even prevent fluids from being trapped in the lower body (leg swelling.)
Highlights:
A Flexibility Test
Pictures
Modifications of Stretches including how to intensify stretches
Names for all the stretches
STRETCHING is an excellent guide to more stretching techniques than I have ever seen in an exercise routine/stretching routine DVD. The practical stretching, for say computer use, makes this book indispensable.

Ellie Herman's Pilates Workbook on the Ball: Illustrated Step-by-Step Guide Review

Ellie Herman's Pilates Workbook on the Ball: Illustrated Step-by-Step Guide
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is the third book I have bought from Ulysses Press, and it is just as good as the other two ("Weight-bearing workouts for women", and "Weights on the Ball workbook" - which is particularly good, and I highly recommend). This book has the Ulysses Press trade-mark 'lay-flat binding' - so useful during exercise, and is well-organized, well-illustrated, very informative, with great exercises and a very nice work-out sequence. Ellie Herman has taken the original Pilates matwork sequence and has adapted it to the exercise ball, with a few additional Pilates exercises thrown in. This is a natural progression from the regular Pilates matwork routine, you can easily and quickly transfer to this program if you are already familiar with the original Pilates matwork. This book is easy to follow, well illustrated, and gives all the usual information associated with Pilates, as well as with using the fitness ball, including important safe-guards. I highly recommend this book. My next Ulysses Press purchase is going to be Ellie Herman's Pilates Props matwork book - based on how good this book is, I know that one is going to be a winner as well.

FrameWork Review

FrameWork
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
'Framework' is a fitness program for your bones and joints and offers a complete workout combined with diet and lifestyle advice. It is divided up into three parts. Part one discusses why you need framework. Part two is the program and its components include cardio, core strengthening and flexibility, upper and lower body stretching and strengthening exercises, resting and recovering, diet, and decreasing stress. And finally, part three discusses various treatment options for when your frame fails (injuries). This is not a terribly detailed section, but rather offers the reader a general overview. All-in-all I felt it to be a worthwhile resource for anyone looking to give their aged or worn frame a tune-up. Also recommend Treat Your Own Rotator Cuff for more detailed info on rotator cuff tears and fixing many shoulder problems.

The Women's Health Big Book of Exercises: Four Weeks to a Leaner, Sexier, Healthier YOU Review

The Women's Health Big Book of Exercises: Four Weeks to a Leaner, Sexier, Healthier YOU
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Very comprehensive overview of hundreds of exercises that can be done using gym equipment, home equipment (stability balls, dumbbells, etc.), and/or no equipment. The photos detailing each exercise are in full color and the accompanying explanations are detailed, specific, and easy to follow.
The book is broken down into chapters dedicated to body parts: Chest, Back, Shoulders, Arms, Quadriceps & Calves, Glutes & Hamstrings, Core, as well as chapters for Total Body and Warmup Exercises. There is also a chapter on how to put various exercises together for specific-goal workouts (e.g. "The Get Your Body Back Workout", "The Skinny Jeans Workout", "The Bikini-Ready Workout", "The Best Sports Workout", "The Best Three-Exercise Workouts"). In addition, there are chapters dedicated to Nutrition, Cardio Workouts, the importance of Weights, etc.
All in all, this is an extremely comprehensive book that is not at all about gimmicks or shortcuts but is simply well researched and well presented. It will literally replace several books I've bought on this subject in past years. I'm not easily impressed by books on this subject and yet I'm extremely impressed by this compilation. Well done Adam Campbell and contributors!
