Health & Fitness in Plain English Review

Health and Fitness in Plain English
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I bought this book in conjunction with "The Ab Revolution" and since putting the advice contained in both into practice, I feel better and more importantly, I feel like I'm getting much more out of my workouts. The books advocate incorporating fitness strategies into your daily life, not just during an hour or two doing obligatory "exercise". I am a real gym rat and enjoy the time I spend there, but I never gave much thought to working on my fitness level throughout the day. For example, now I run up the four flights of stairs at work several times a day to work on my anaerobic capacity, thanks to the abs book and the info on abs in the Health and Fitness book I get a lot more out of my time spent on the stairmaster and elliptical machines because I maintain proper posture.
I always have a million questions related to proper stretching, proper weightlifting technique (eg lower weight more reps? or more weight fewer reps?), etc. and this book is proving to be an invaluable reference tool - so much so that now I schlep it around in my gym bag.
The author does a very good job of explaining complicated exercise physiology so that people like me understand and can apply the concepts. I feel like I'm really progressing now whereas before I always wondered whether I was working hard enough, etc. I've been on a weightloss/fitness building mission for almost a year now and now I'm as motivated as I was in the beginning because I feel like I know what I'm doing.

The Pilates Edge (Avery Health Guides) Review

The Pilates Edge (Avery Health Guides)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I was pleased to finally find this book a few years ago, as I was looking for a way to help with my fencing. As a book geared towards athletes, it assumes that you don't simply want to "look and feel fit", but build a real core that helps you become a stronger athlete, no matter what your sport.
I appreciated that the illustrations of the exercises (which are very well done) featured both authors, drving home the idea that Pilates is a fitness regimen for BOTH men and women who want to be stronger. Too many times books about exercise systems focus on one gender, which can turn people off... I often felt that Pilates suffered from being marketed too strongly towards women when it is a very universal exercise system.
I also very much liked that the core exercises (there are many) were ones that did not require any extra equipment, relying on your own body weight and range of motion to accomplish the movement. The sample exercise programs at the rear of the book emphasize this. Other sections of the book that include weights, bars, etc. are considered as supplemental to the core system and can be added as needed. Personally, this helped me to stay with the exercises, because I didn't need to have anything with me to do them.
An excellent book. I highly recommend it.

Patricia's book, and the practice on which it is based, is AMAZING. Really phenomenal. I am a major skeptic of the "happiness business" - the last book I read was Barbara Ehrenreich's critique of this social phenomenon - and I can WHOLEHEARTEDLY say that the INTENSATI METHOD IS SOMETHING NEW, DIFFERENT, AND ENTIRELY EMPOWERING. I have studied with Patricia for years, and the IntenSati method has improved every aspect of my life measurably... the body is just the beginning. This book presents a cogent and compelling method that inspires readers to get passionate, enthusiastic, and disciplined about getting the life and body they want now. The Ultimate Body Shaping Bible: Get in the Best Shape of Your Life with Targeted Workouts That Tone and Tighten Everything Review

The Ultimate Body Shaping Bible: Get in the Best Shape of Your Life with Targeted Workouts That Tone and Tighten Everything
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I am a personal trainer who is big into weight training (for women and men). I am always happy to see new books that open the door to women, making the workout scene more approachable. This book is GREAT for newcomers to working out, giving lots of beginner pointers and direction. I like how it is laid out with the different levels, although I'd hardly limit your workout to the things listed in this book.
If you are new, or just getting back into it, then this is a great start--very easy to read, very easy to follow directions. It is broken down into various body parts (I like that) and then into the author's idea of beginner-advanced workouts. (I personally think you can go much farther and get much more from your workout if you don't stop at "advanced" and introduce different routines.)
There were some things in this book that I hadn't seen before and will integrate into my client's workouts, (as well as my own).
Easy to follow, easy to read, easy to learn...Great beginner book.

Fit in 5: 5, 10, & 30 Minute Workouts for a Leaner, Stronger Body Review

Fit in 5: 5, 10, and 30 Minute Workouts for a Leaner, Stronger Body
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Fit in 5 is an incredibly informative book for anyone who wants to begin a healthy lifestyle. Not only does Greg Whyte provide a variety of exercises at varying levels of difficulty, but he provides valid and accurate reasoning behind the exercises. Whyte explains the purpose behind targeting different muscle groups and provides examples for individuals at varying levels of difficulty and rigor.

The introduction of the book provides useful information and guidance on how to create a whole lifestyle of health, including diet, motivation, and attitude. Whyte recognizes and pushes the importance of not just adding exercise to a daily routine, but encourages the individual to change their lifestyle to incorporate an attitude of health from diet to a positive outlook and attitude.
For those who are just beginning to work out, it can be overwhelming to know how to structure workouts or even know where to begin. Fit in 5 provides detailed information on how a workout should be structured, including how duration, frequency, and intensity can impact the health benefits of a workout. It was incredibly helpful to have the picture guides for the 5-,10-, and 30 minute workouts. I was able to easily see the different positions and skills need between the easy, medium, and hard exercises.
As someone who works out regularly, my biggest struggle is maintaining the motivation. Whyte provides easy ways to stay motivated while working out and options for creating diverse physical activities to keep the workouts exciting and engaging. This books recognizes workouts do not have to be work, but can be in integral and fun part to everyday living.
Overall, a great book for any beginner or someone who wants to re-engage their body in exercise and move towards an overall healthy lifestyle.

LOVE this book, just ordered three more copies -- for my college step-daughter, my Pilates instructor and my physical therapist! Down-to-earth and practical (she gets it that we all have already busy lives) with great tips and techniques (well-researched, and the instructions are detailed and professional, much like you're in a personal training situation -- experience sure shows here). There's also some real leadership here, an understanding about where motivation comes from -- I was lacing up my sneakers after the first 4 chapters!

Average Reviews:

I bought this book over a year ago and have read and followed it ever since, and right now I'm in the best shape of my life so far. I believe I'm in a good position to write a review for it. What I like about the book is that:
- It describes a large number of exercises in great detail (along with "make it easier" and "- harder" versions)
- It included traditional as well as newer exercises
- Useful for beginners as well as advanced lifters
- Includes topics like nutrition, cardio-workouts, sports specific fitness etc. in reasonable details
- The book doesn't make any unrealistic promises. (The results you achieve depend on the efforts you put in; a book can only guide you along the path)
- Gives injury prevention tips
- Makes an excellent reference guide
- Although the title says "Men's health", it can be used by women too (My wife often looks up exercises from it)
- Offers advice based on science-backed wisdom
- Useful if you want to do strength/weight training (as opposed to ONLY bodybuilding)
- Doesn't promote any brand-named products
This book helped me a lot when I was a total beginner and I still look it up when I feel like changing my routine or to check if my form is correct. Although I have used other fitness books, this book remains the backbone of my lifting plan. Over all, I'll highly recommend this book if you are serious about fitness and weight-training, even if you are a beginner.

The Yoga Bootcamp Box: An Interactive Program to Revolutionize Your Life with Yoga Review

The Yoga Bootcamp Box: An Interactive Program to Revolutionize Your Life with Yoga
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I have been using Baron's Videos and DVD's for years and he's definitely my overall favorite instructor out there (I have over 80 Yoga programs on Video and DVD so I am very familiar with a good deal of what is out there).
My main purpose for purchasing the Bootcamp box was for the Yoga flows. I have been practicing yoga 7 days a week for about the last 8 years and am always looking for more short practices to use along with my longer practices. The three 20 minute flows "Vinyasa Flow", "Hip Flow" and "Core Flow" are wonderful sequences that anyone can fit into their daily lives. The Yoga Cards that come with the set are excellent for helping you learn and remember the poses along with the verbal instruction on the CD's.
I haven't done the 75 minute practice yet but I am looking forward to it because I have done Baron's longer video practices such as "Soul of Strength" and "Power and Precision" and they are really great (and really tough).
Still, if you did nothing else but rotated among the three different 20 minute flows on a daily basis, it would be enough to keep you strong and flexible from head to toe. As Baron even stresses in "Journey Into Power", "A little bit of yoga done a lot is better than a lot of yoga done once in a while".
Also, I would HIGHLY recommend getting Baron's Video called "Transform Your Life, Yoga with Baron Baptiste" which is from a PBS special where he takes 40 students through a week long bootcamp. It is very inspiring and also has a bonus 20 minute "Power Yoga Basics" practice after the feature. It's a great routine and very easy to fit into any morning.
The overall Bootcamp concept is very interesting and I would love to go one one of his actual bootcamps someday, but for a very small price one can implement much of those practices right now at their home. Even if you can't devote yourself to the complete bootcamp experience, just incorporating his basic principles of eating and the yoga flows (and meditation) can make a difference in your daily life from the moment you receive the Bootcamp Box forward for the rest of your life.
The great thing about a home Yoga practice (especially a vinyasa power yoga approach which will eliminate the need for weight training) is that you NEVER have to miss a day of doing your practice. It doesn't matter what the weather is like, you don't have to drive to a gym or class, you can't make excuses for not having enough time (since anyone can spare at least 20 minutes). Just roll out your mat before you eat and shower each day and you are ready to go :)
I have even found it possible to squeeze in 20 minutes of yoga at home when I've had to be at the airport at 6 AM (which means waking up about 4:30 AM and starting my practice at about 4:40 AM :) ). The microscopic amount of sleep you sacrifice by rising a bit earlier will be nothing compared to the benefits in terms of well being and energy you will reap from the 20 or so minutes of Yoga. I have also found I can always bring my mat with me on trips (by folding it flat a few times rather than rolling it) and have even practiced in tight spaces in Hotel/Motel rooms.
I'm only writing all this for the purpose of emphasizing just how realistic it is to have some form of daily yoga practice under almost any circumstance.
Even if you're not up for a more physical Vinyasa practice, I'd recommend trying some of the "Yoga Zone" basics tapes (all have Two-20 minute routines which are very good, or Suzanne Deason's "Stress Relief Yoga For Beginners" which is about 20-25 minutes and will put you through a full range of movements. In the least you can do Rodney Yee's AM yoga which is about 15 minutes long, his Power Yoga Set is also quite excellent, less than 30 minutes each, "Stamina" is my favorite of the three).
Along with many of his Video/DVD programs, I also have both of Baron's books, "40 Days to Personal Revolution" (his latest) and "Journey Into Power" (my favorite of the two). I would highly recommend purchasing "Journey Into Power", it is very comprehensive and inspiring, it also has a section on a "Cleansing Diet" which if followed will not only help you lose weight but give you tremendous energy.
Since using his approach to nutrition (which is really very simple, it's based eating whole fresh foods, staying away from processed foods) I have been able to up the level of intensity of my Yoga practices, only rarely having to do a more gentle practice. This has increased my strength considerably and has built a lot of lean muscle. So, lose the excuses, roll out your mat and jump start your day and your life!
Namaste

As a Yoga teacher I frequently review yoga books for ideas and new information. I am very excited about Easy Does It Yoga! Could it be that finally Yoga has come of age? This book might just persuade the Yoga doubters to view Yoga as an acceptable exercise that truly will benefit the mind, body and spirit in the present and on into aging. The author, Alice Christensen, has written a comprehensive and compassionate book on Yoga and its tremendous health benefits for the older person, and indeed, anyone physically challenged by bad health, addictions and inertia. The various disciplines of yoga are discussed and benefits illustrated by case examples. The exercises are well detailed in words and pictures. Nutrition is covered in a reader friendly style that lists detailed menus of wholesome foods. Easy Does It Yoga should be required reading for any business involved in the health care needs of today's older population.

Age Defying Fitness: Making the Most of Your Body for the Rest of Your Life Review

Age Defying Fitness: Making the Most of Your Body for the Rest of Your Life
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Just a great little book written by two physical therapists. The idea the book is based upon is that the antidote to aging is activity. So what kind of activity do you need?
To answer this question, the book begins by having you evaluate your physical performance so you can identify those areas that you need the most work in. Thus, you complete five tests that assess your posture, strength, balance, flexibility, and endurance- or what the book calls "the five domains."
After finishing these tests, you should have a pretty good idea of what areas you need the most work on. From there, you just go to the posture chapter or the balance chapter, or the strength chapter and so on- whatever chapters you need the most.
Each chapter contains additional "tests" for the reader to do to further hone in on problem areas. These are kinda neat and very easy for just about anybody to do. After these specific tests, easy-to-do exercises are provided. For instance, the posture chapter contains a lot of stretching exercises. the strengthening exercises use a theraband which comes with the book, the balance exercises (there are eight) are simple i.e. stand on one leg, flexibility exercises which cover your neck area down to your legs, and endurance exercises such as walking, jumping rope or cycling.
The book ends with a brief chapter called "Putting It All Together" which ties up loose ends such as coping with soreness and staying consitent with exercise.
All-in-all its a neat book with a wealth of evidence-based information and simple exercises you can do with little or no equipment. Other books I liked in the body repair genre include Treat Your Own Rotator Cuff if you have a shoulder problem or rotator cuff tear that keeps you from exercising. Good luck with the tune-up!

Weights for 50+: Building Strength, Staying Healthy and Enjoying an Active Lifestyle Review

Weights for 50+: Building Strength, Staying Healthy and Enjoying an Active Lifestyle
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I bought this book for my husband who just turned 60 this spring. He is no stranger to working out, especially since he was in the army many years ago. He was very fit and muscular and is a mechanic by trade so he is also very strong. He has also never had a problem with being overweight. A few years ago, he was very sick and lost a tremendous amount of muscle mass. Since we already had free weights here at home and exercise bands, this book seemed appropriate. When I gave it to him, he jumped right in and started using some of the exercises. There has been a marked improvement in both his muscle tone and mass. I catch him studying the pages to find yet another exercise that will improve "his guns". Since he is not a "gym" person this has been a godsend. His posture is improving as well as his confidence.
