I love this book and use it on a very regular basis to help my own clients in a busy orthopedic practice. Brian's recommendations are based on sound principles of posture and strengthening muscles that are prone to weakness and inhibition. He illustrates the use of his exercise concepts with case studies. Well worth the tiny investment.

Kettlebell Training for Athletes: Develop Explosive Power and Strength for Martial Arts, Football, Basketball, and Other Sports, pb Review

Kettlebell Training for Athletes: Develop Explosive Power and Strength for Martial Arts, Football, Basketball, and Other Sports, pb
Average Reviews:

This review is for the competitive athlete.
As a current medical student, former college football player and continuing student of athletic training I do not recommend this book to anybody serious about training for a sport. This book's first half has a very basic description of kettlebell exercises that any certified kettlebell trainer could give you. The second half has a prescription of workouts for various sports. They are generic and not very catered (e.g. same basic exercises except for football its 5 reps and basketball its 10 reps) to the varying demands of each sport. There aren't to my knowledge actually any good sport specific kettlebell books for competitive team sport athletes at this time. Kettlebell training is too new in the US, professional teams are starting to incorporate kettlebell training into their workouts but they are still experimenting with regimens. Reading the author's story about himself in the introduction gives no reason why he should be trusted as someone who can give sound advice for exercise routines for athletes of the various sports he writes about.
As a basic book for a novice to kettlbells that wants to get more "toned" I would give this 3 stars.

Balance Training: Stability Workouts for Core Strength and a Sculpted Body Review

For beginners outside the fitness industry. I bought this book based on previous reviews so, hope this will set the record straight... To be honest, yes, there is a lot of pictures in this book... But many of them show improper form or misalignment. Note to the author: Scapulae retraction and protraction are inverted throughout the book which shows, poor knowledge of anatomy and kinesiology. I gave it one star because I like the variety of foam roller exercises. The rest is just same old and bad. I wish I could have browsed this book before buying it. It would have saved me time and money.

Functional Exercise Progressions Review

Functional Exercise Progressions

This book was easy to understand. The pictures show exactly how to do each exercise with each level of ability. It was both technical and functional in relaying how each exercise would benefit your body. I especially appreciated the different levels showing how to exercise a muscle group without using weight machines.

Core Awareness: Enhancing Yoga, Pilates, Exercise & Dance Review

Core Awareness: Enhancing Yoga, Pilates, Exercise and Dance
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Liz Koch knows what she is writing about, having worked with her own 'core awarenss' for many years. For myself, as someone professionally involved with yoga, Pilates, exercise and dance for years, the book was an instant fit. There is much valuable information in this book, and the general approach to movement that it advocates is something that desperately needs to become more widespread. On the down side, I wish Ms. Koch had paid attention to the amazon reviews of the previous book (The Psoas Book,), which suffers from the same production problems as this newer one does. I hope her next book gets professionally published (or even republish this one professionally). There are many typos, grammatical problems, and other errors that a good editor/proofreader could help with. Also, the incredibly simplistic line drawings that illustrate her sophisticated "movement explorations" don't begin to do justice to the material. Even I, an experienced movement professional, could not understand the proper body positioning on many of them. Please, please, some good photos!! In conclusion, this book is definitely worth reading for the information, but it is sad that the production of the book was so amateurish. But don't let that hold you back from getting the book--there aren't many books out there with this in-depth approach to core awareness. Most of what passes for 'core training' out there is nowhere near this level of somatic understanding.

Strength Ball Training-2nd Edition Review

Strength Ball Training-2nd Edition
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I'm not a PhD on the subject, but as a lifelong "fitness enthusiast" (read: two points shy of OCD) I've seen dozens of books on diet and exercise and have managed, through judicious culling of available material, to distill a program out of it all that has eased considerably my transition from extended adolescence into midlife crisis.
Lately haven given up running and 80% of my weightlifting activity in favor of dance class, hiking/hill sprinting and bodyweight circuits, the stability ball is the single most important piece of gear I use. The core conditioning I've learned in the course of various rehab cycles relies on it, and having revamped my program based on the ball and related movements I'm always looking for new information about it.
This book is the most comprehensive out of half a dozen or so I've seen on the subject. It contains sections on each body part and a full range of medicine ball movements for explosive conditioning. If I would have known 30 years ago what I know now, I'd have been ten times better off using the programs in this book than the folklore-laden, body builder-based training I was using.
If you want to build the type of conditioning that will not only make you a better athlete but give you survivability throughout your life, this book would be an excellent place to start.

Age Defying Fitness: Making the Most of Your Body for the Rest of Your Life Review

Age Defying Fitness: Making the Most of Your Body for the Rest of Your Life
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Just a great little book written by two physical therapists. The idea the book is based upon is that the antidote to aging is activity. So what kind of activity do you need?
To answer this question, the book begins by having you evaluate your physical performance so you can identify those areas that you need the most work in. Thus, you complete five tests that assess your posture, strength, balance, flexibility, and endurance- or what the book calls "the five domains."
After finishing these tests, you should have a pretty good idea of what areas you need the most work on. From there, you just go to the posture chapter or the balance chapter, or the strength chapter and so on- whatever chapters you need the most.
Each chapter contains additional "tests" for the reader to do to further hone in on problem areas. These are kinda neat and very easy for just about anybody to do. After these specific tests, easy-to-do exercises are provided. For instance, the posture chapter contains a lot of stretching exercises. the strengthening exercises use a theraband which comes with the book, the balance exercises (there are eight) are simple i.e. stand on one leg, flexibility exercises which cover your neck area down to your legs, and endurance exercises such as walking, jumping rope or cycling.
The book ends with a brief chapter called "Putting It All Together" which ties up loose ends such as coping with soreness and staying consitent with exercise.
All-in-all its a neat book with a wealth of evidence-based information and simple exercises you can do with little or no equipment. Other books I liked in the body repair genre include Treat Your Own Rotator Cuff if you have a shoulder problem or rotator cuff tear that keeps you from exercising. Good luck with the tune-up!

The Runner's Yoga Book: A Balanced Approach to Fitness Review

The Runner's Yoga Book: A Balanced Approach to Fitness
Average Reviews:

Other books on Hatha Yoga in the Iyengar style have prettier pictures, but this one is extraordinary in describing the essential poses clearly and precisely, with careful instructions on how to enter and maintain the pose, and with suggestions on how to modify the poses in the beginning, before you are flexible and strong enough to perform them in the ideal form. It also outlines suggestions for anyone pursuing other sports besides running, but that is a bonus.
I have gone overboard on buying instructional books about Iyengar yoga, since I live in a small town with no easy access to trained teachers, but this is the single best one I have (until I get to the point in a few years when I can understand Light on Yoga). Other supplementary resources I have found valuable are The New Yoga for People over 50 (by S. Francina - and for beginners of any age), and the Yoga Journal videotapes, especially the ones with Patricia Walden.

Dynamic Stretching: The Revolutionary New Warm-up Method to Improve Power, Performance and Range of Motion Review

Dynamic Stretching: The Revolutionary New Warm-up Method to Improve Power, Performance and Range of Motion
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The author tells us that . . . "today's fitness experts have discovered that both stretching and how you stretch can affect how well you perform on the field, court or track." That is the basis of this new book on a most valuable topic.
Those of us who exercise a good deal, often neglect stretching. Moreover, we neglect stretches specific to our sport or functional needs. With this book, there's no longer an excuse for that.
You will discover how to:
Develop full body range of motion
Enhance full-body motor control
Increase flexibility, balance and muscular endurance
Improve force generation and reaction time
Correct major and minor muscle imbalances
Most of the stretches are sport-specific. So, to that extent, it somewhat limits it's interest to some. Nonetheless, I found exercises that would be worthwhile to most anyone. In fact, the second part of the book shows how to do stretches that can be done by anyone without regard to a specific sport. For example, you'll learn the high-knee lateral skip and the dynamic empty can. You'll also learn variations. The photos are black and white and fairly small. But, they easily demonstrate how to do the stretches and the instructions are given in 1,2,3 order so you can't mess up.
If you want to learn some new stretches that will make you perform better in your sport and simply function better in everyday living, you'll love this book.
Highly recommended.
- Susanna K. Hutcheson

Stretching: 30th Anniversary Edition Review

Stretching: 30th Anniversary Edition

I liked this book on stretching for several reasons. The first is its simplicity. The pictures and instructions are very straightforward, making it quite easy to do basic stretches. Stretches are given for just about every muscle and limb you'd ever want to stretch and the author has even included some suggested stretching routines for various sports. Whether you're a competetive athlete, business person or housewife, I feel that this is book will have something to offer everyone making it a very handy and "flexible" book. Also recommend Treat Your Own Spinal Stenosis for anyone with back pain looking for more specific stretches and/or exercises.

This is the book that people tell their friends about, that trainers suggest for virtually every sport and activity, and that medical professionals recommend to people just starting to get back in shape. Stretching first appeared in 1980 as a new generation of Americans became committed to running, cycling, aerobic training, and workouts in the gym - all of which are commonplace now.It features stretching routines specific to a variety of people, including sports enthusiasts, travelers, children, gardeners, and people in wheelchairs. There is also an abbreviated version of each routine for people in a hurry, new information on the stretching vs. warming up debate, and new and improved drawings. This 30th anniversary edition features two-color inks to better define the muscle groups helped by each stretching exercise. A new section focuses on office fitness exercises, helpful for both home and office computer users.

8 Steps to a Pain-Free Back: Natural Posture Solutions for Pain in the Back, Neck, Shoulder, Hip, Knee, and Foot (Remember When It Didn't Hurt)

This is by far the single best source for healing back pain that I have seen. I hurt my lower back pretty badly doing heavy deadlifts after too long of a layoff (entirely my fault, I know), and pursued a wide variety of different treatment methods. I had previously been exposed to other postural/ alignment methodologies in an attempt to get rid of chronic injuries, which had been helpful, but nothing was as poignant, simple, or direct as Gokhale's work.
There are three outstanding aspects of this book:
1. Gokhale clearly identifies what ideal posture and alignment looks like, and backs this up with numerous photos.
2. Gokhale's method is very, very simple, and once learned, becomes integrated into your everyday life. I know of other methods where you have to spend 30-45 minutes per day doing exercises - this method requires very little extra bandwidth once you have learned it.
3. The book itself is beautifully laid out, with a balance between illustrative photos and explanations.
Considering the amount of time and money I've spent pursuing other treatment methods, this is a ridiculously good value. Don't discount it just because it is so inexpensive! I bought a copy for my parents, and two extra books as I constantly have them loaned out. If you are seeking to get rid of chronic pain, this is my #1 go-to recommendation.

Nearly 90% of American adults suffer from back pain, and the number continues to climb. Why does this condition affect so many people in the industrialized world, while in some countries only 5% of adults report back pain? In a quest to find the root cause of back pain, Esther Gokhale studied at the Aplomb Institute in Paris and traveled to parts of the world where back pain is virtually unknown. Her research took her to remote Burkina Faso, rural Portugal, and fishing villages in Brazil. What she learned in each of these places has changed the lives of thousands of people. Preserved in the movements of weavers, millers, and farmers in more traditional societies is ancient body wisdom that prevents pain and enhances health. For the first time, these insights have been brought together in a step-by-step guide designed to help those suffering from back pain re-educate their bodies and regain the posture for which our bodies evolved.
