Prime for Life: Functional Fitness for Ageless Living Review

Prime for Life: Functional Fitness for Ageless Living

This book includes the latest (I try to keep up on my own) research and evidence about the most effective exercise and physical rehabilitation procedures. Even though it is tagged for the aging, it is appropriate for younger adults to read in order to prevent problems that they may be starting to accumulate now, such as what is really going on when one is slumping at the computer, sleeping on the stomach side, walking on stairs, etc.
I learned a lot about how bones and joints move, age, strengthen, and respond to various stresses from different intensities and durations. The author emphasizes correct biomechanical movement as prevention and cure for many, but not all, injuries and skeletal ailments.
I figured out the cause and cure of two ailments of mine from this $17.00 book. Although it can be dangerous to self-diagnose, the author's cautious movement retraining advice is helping me.
The friendly no-ego writing style, diagrams and photos are very helpful also.
The only thing I'm surprised at was that the author didn't include forward planks and push-ups as part of an exercise program.

Health & Fitness in Plain English Review

Health and Fitness in Plain English
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I bought this book in conjunction with "The Ab Revolution" and since putting the advice contained in both into practice, I feel better and more importantly, I feel like I'm getting much more out of my workouts. The books advocate incorporating fitness strategies into your daily life, not just during an hour or two doing obligatory "exercise". I am a real gym rat and enjoy the time I spend there, but I never gave much thought to working on my fitness level throughout the day. For example, now I run up the four flights of stairs at work several times a day to work on my anaerobic capacity, thanks to the abs book and the info on abs in the Health and Fitness book I get a lot more out of my time spent on the stairmaster and elliptical machines because I maintain proper posture.
I always have a million questions related to proper stretching, proper weightlifting technique (eg lower weight more reps? or more weight fewer reps?), etc. and this book is proving to be an invaluable reference tool - so much so that now I schlep it around in my gym bag.
The author does a very good job of explaining complicated exercise physiology so that people like me understand and can apply the concepts. I feel like I'm really progressing now whereas before I always wondered whether I was working hard enough, etc. I've been on a weightloss/fitness building mission for almost a year now and now I'm as motivated as I was in the beginning because I feel like I know what I'm doing.

Pain Free for Women: The Revolutionary Program for Ending Chronic Pain Review

Pain Free for Women: The Revolutionary Program for Ending Chronic Pain
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Over 3 years ago I had constant shoulder, back, and hip pain. I had already invested in over a dozen books and had come to the conclusion that nothing was ever going to help me - chronic pain was a part of growing older. I also had a difficult time doing the Taijiquan (a martial art) form I was working on because my back was overly curved. On the advice of a friend, I got Egoscue's first book, Pain Free.
After doing the exercises (30 minutes each day) for a few months, wonder of wonder, my curved back relaxed and I was able to sink into the Taijiquan postures I'd been trying to achieve for ten years. But best of all - the pain disappeared. For the first time in years, I didn't wake up to daily pain in my joints!!!
Unfortunately, almost a year ago, I got into a car accident that is still causing me a great deal of pain in my neck and back. I had been doing those same Pain Free exercises from before, but they didn't seem to be doing much.
I decided to purchase this newer book anyway - since it was written specifically for women. I actually didn't think it would help much and prepared myself for disappointment.
Oh MY!! After just a few weeks, once again, I was amazed at the difference. The exercises in this book (and yes, they do take much longer than the simple Pain Free book) were so helpful that I was able to change from a narcotic pain reliever to a non-narcotic pain reliever. Believe me, for someone trying to function- that is a BIG difference.
Egoscue is a genius. I have seen many doctors, including so-called pain specialists, and the only thing that has significantly helped me so far is Egoscue exercises. I now do them every day, and can feel the difference in my neck, back, shoulders, hips, knees, ankles, and feet.
Even better - this book explains in much more detail than the Pain Free book exactly what's going on in my muscles and body - so that I can really tell why the exercises are working (or not). Now that I can feel the difference, I can tell when to stop doing one phase and move on to the next.
I felt compelled to write this review because I noticed a few negative reviews. The only thing that I can postulate is that
1. The people writing were not committed to the exercises for long enough for them to work, or...
2. The people did not really have chronic pain to begin with and therefore no motivation, or....
3. The people have something personal against Peter Egoscue (I have never met him, so I wouldn't know).
All I can say is -- this book changed my life. I only wish I had read it BEFORE my accident - I suspect that I wouldn't have gotten so hurt had I been in better "functional" shape prior to getting rear-ended.
This book is about prevention, about taking control of your body and making it work the way it was designed to work. If you are a women in chronic pain - believe me - if you do these exercises, you will change your life for the better. Don't let others disuade you from doing the most that you can for yourself.

The Illustrated Guide to Functional Anatomy of the Musculokeletal System Review

The Illustrated Guide to Functional Anatomy of the Musculokeletal System
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
A fascinating read, this book explains structure and movement in clear concise language and supports the text with an elaborate collection of diagrams. Its thorough enough for professionals, but understandable to the lay person. Furthermore, it goes beyond the mechanical description of possible movement towards a functional understanding of "rythmic" coordination. However, I must insist that my radial arm-bones have always been proximal to my lateral epicondyles and not the medial ones (see page 147). If you twist my arm I may recant, but in the meantime it may be helpful to know that the medial and lateral collateral ligaments suffice in holding the ulna in its trochlear hinge while the annular ligament secures the radius in its position relative to the ulna.

Posture Alignment Review

Posture Alignment
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The Author of this book coaches you through everything in the simplest terms possible. The basic theory of the book is that our bones become misaligned (forward head or twisted pelvis for example) because our muscles become stiff and weak from lack of use. our bones actually shift when they are weak to acomodate the demands placed on our bodies.
To be more specific, we have pairs of muscles on either side of our joints that move them in opposite directions, whether it be our hips wrists, Knees shoulders ect. When we use our joints, the muscles on one side contract and the muscles on the other relax. Muscle imbalances on both side of a joint cause the bone to be pulled out of alignment.
I have seen many people-- even before I read this book--with forward heads, feet that were tilted outwards like a duck or excesivly inward and shoulders that were uneven. The goal of alignment is to get our bodies back into their proper sympatry and thus restore function and mobility to our joints.
a forward neck for example, puts strain on your shoulders, upper back and neck which limits its mobility, and requires greater energy to maintain. Every postural misalignment puts strain on other parts of the body, thus using unessesary energy. Arezo teaches you how to access yourself for misalignments and then tells you exactly how to fix them with exercises. He guides you through step by step with clear illustrations for every exercise. At most they will take you half an hour. He has different exercise menus for different postural misalignments. He even has short menus that help overall alignment.
The great thing about Posture Alignment is that the author tells you exactly how you will feel after doing the exercises and what to expect from them. This is really the least intensive and effective home solution for anyone with postural problems.
He makes good sense. This is the best sum of money I have ever spent in a personal effort to correct my own postural problems and back pain. I couldn't have asked for anything more.
The Posture Alignment theory, has proved its worth in working wonders for my posture and how I feel. I am very surprised that I can feel the difference, and others can see the difference in such a short time.
I cannot in good conscience give this anything but what it deserves. Five stars.

Board-certified emergency physician Paul D'Arezzo presents Functional Fitness: Look Younger Stay Active Longer, a guide to delaying the effects of age not through expensive (and potentially dangerous!) surgery, but rather through healthier living and habits. Chapters cover everything from proper posture and nutrition to staying flexible, preventing back pain, personalizing an exercise program one can stick to, avoiding or coping with arthritis, the mental dimension of energy, and much more. Illustrated with black-and-white cartoons and diagrams throughout, Functional Fitness gives practical tips in no-nonsense terms. Though particularly valuable for aging baby boomers, Functional Fitness is a superb self-care guide for all ages. Also highly recommended is D'Arezzo's previous book "Posture Alignment".

Having read about and tried a lot of psycho-body-therapy techniques, I was very impressed to find something this different and efficient. Using relaxation as the primary vehicle of exploration, amazing results occur - fx improving movement flexibility more that "hardcore" streching. Mary Bond guides one to experience ones body in a new, more rich and subtle way. Unlike many related books, this one offers lots of concrete knowledge and advice, Mary Bond is not afraid to share her insights. I cannot recommend this book highly enough - it's simply brilliant.

Fix Your Own Pain Without Drugs or Surgery Review

Fix Your Own Pain Without Drugs or Surgery
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Dr. Bookspan's approach is to teach you enough about body mechanics to understand how you are supposed to fit together, then give exercise suggestions aimed at either stretching tight areas out or sliding the parts that don't fit together back into place. A major theme is letting you feel how your muscles are supposed to work via the exercises so you can correct how you hold yourself and move all the time. Jolie speaks in terms of transferring what you learn about body mechanics by exercise into lessons for everyday life. Since the body is a system where misalignment in one area can cascade into pain in other locations, the book wraps up with some sample stories of people who started with one issue and then watched things go out of control from there. It details how these patients were eventually able to wean themselves off medicine (and often various quack "cures" like bad supplements) simply by focusing on how the body should work and exercising it until everything was back in place.
I suspect that the very active nature of these suggestions will be the main problem with this book for many people. Most solutions here are in the form of things you need to do every day for some period of time, perhaps even the rest of your life, in order to adjust your body to work the way it's supposed to as we all continue to get older. There are some quick-fixes to be found in this title, but that's the exception. For example, I had been suffering for about a year with problems related to what she calls forward-neck. In literally five minutes after reading her description of the problem (as part of the extensive free information given on the author's web site) and finally understanding what had gone wrong, I slid my neck back into place using one of her suggested exercises. There was a little pop, and just like that the pain that had been haunting me for months was gone. Hasn't been back since, because now I've learned to feel when my neck is moving in the wrong direction and correct it before it gets bad again. I can assure you that her suggestions were new to me even though I'd been searching for information on this topic regularly that entire year, finding little useful advice anywhere. That was a great lesson that took only moments to learn; the rest of what I'd like to "fix...without drugs or surgery" is going to take a series of stretches performed every day for quite some time.
The bulk of the book consists of seven chapters focusing on pain in a specific area of the body: neck/upper-back, lower-back, shoulder, hip, knee, ankle/Achilles, foot, and wrist. The chapters are aimed to be self-contained, which is both good and bad. The good side is that if you have a specific pain area you want to focus on, you can dive right into that chapter and go. The main problem with this approach is that there is quite a bit of redundant content, and often the information about a specific exercise is split across several areas. This book badly needs an index. The main saving grace of the organizational issues is that the text itself is so easy and fun to read, chock full of helpful advice on every page, that you'll eventually want to read it cover to cover anyway.
Along with the exercises, you get an outline of medical issues that might be causing problems so you don't let a more serious issue go undiagnosed. As suggested by the title, the main audience that will appreciate this book are those who have already done a tour of doctors and therapists, been through enough tests to rule out major problems, and then were told that serious medication or elective surgery were the only options available. Sometimes, that's completely incorrect, and all the patient really needs is to is reverse harmful posture and movements that are the root cause of the pain--a topic most doctors are woefully under trained at giving suggestions on.
It's not a plan for couch potatoes, but it can work. As a long-time gym rat used to suffering for my gains, the thing that impresses me the most about the specific exercises advocated here is how good they feel to perform. The week I first tried Dr. Bookspan's somewhat different back extension exercises, that felt better than anything else I did that week.
Having read most of the popular titles on this subject during the two years I've been trying to correct my own pain issues, I can tell you with some authority that this book is destined to be a classic in this area. Much of the material is unique, and all of it I've tried out has been extremely helpful. The only area I'd really suggest supplementing this title's coverage with is that of multifidus training for resolving back issues. While many of the exercises here will strengthen that area, I didn't note any that taught specifically how to note weakness there and how to focus on it. Either Jim Johnson's "The Multifidus Back Pain Solution" or Rick Jemmett's "Spinal Stabilization" would make great companion volumes to this one (and reading all three books is even better), and anyone who enjoyed those two will find this one has a similar tone and approach, but with much broader coverage.
I would recommend that you check out the book's web site, try some of the exercises presented there, and see if they seem sensible and/or feel good when you try them. If you like how a subset of Dr. Jolie Bookspan's recommendations sound, I guarantee you'll love the more comprehensive treatment offered in this book.

Core Awareness: Enhancing Yoga, Pilates, Exercise & Dance Review

Core Awareness: Enhancing Yoga, Pilates, Exercise and Dance
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Liz Koch knows what she is writing about, having worked with her own 'core awarenss' for many years. For myself, as someone professionally involved with yoga, Pilates, exercise and dance for years, the book was an instant fit. There is much valuable information in this book, and the general approach to movement that it advocates is something that desperately needs to become more widespread. On the down side, I wish Ms. Koch had paid attention to the amazon reviews of the previous book (The Psoas Book,), which suffers from the same production problems as this newer one does. I hope her next book gets professionally published (or even republish this one professionally). There are many typos, grammatical problems, and other errors that a good editor/proofreader could help with. Also, the incredibly simplistic line drawings that illustrate her sophisticated "movement explorations" don't begin to do justice to the material. Even I, an experienced movement professional, could not understand the proper body positioning on many of them. Please, please, some good photos!! In conclusion, this book is definitely worth reading for the information, but it is sad that the production of the book was so amateurish. But don't let that hold you back from getting the book--there aren't many books out there with this in-depth approach to core awareness. Most of what passes for 'core training' out there is nowhere near this level of somatic understanding.

Jiangan: The Chinese Health Wand Review

Jiangan: The Chinese Health Wand
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Jiangan substantiates that old adage about not judging books by their covers. Seriously, who's excited by the image of a bespectacled, white guy with a goofy countenance garbed in traditional Chinese silks, holding a bamboo stick in an awkward-looking position? Well, if you're interested in the health- and fitness-enhancing benefits of one of China's least-known albeit most effective exercise methods, you probably should be. Although it can work well as a stand-alone system, the Chinese health wand exercises described in this book are compatible with, and make a great warm-up for, most other martial arts, soft and hard styles alike.

Even though jiangan was "discovered" by an American, Bruce L. Johnson, in 1945, and ultimately published in a book in 1977, it never became popular in the West. Nevertheless, the movements can help practitioners integrate body and breathing while stretching and strengthening their muscles and simultaneously improving posture, balance, and flexibility. The exercises are low impact, take remarkably little space, and require only a single implement, a simple bamboo rod, cut to the proper length based on the arm-length of the individual.

With regular practice, say twenty to thirty minutes a day, the health and fitness benefits should manifest in short order. As the author relates, ". . . one month after I began practicing jiangan, the muscles in my middle and lower back were firmer and my knees felt much stronger. Several weeks later I was so much trimmer and leaner that friends asked if had been training in a gym . . . it can be argued that similar body-shaping results can be obtained from industrious workouts in other more robust types of exercise; the fact remains that it was jiangan, the gentle internal art, that worked."

Founder of White Crane Bamboo Group, Michael Davies began studying tai chi chuan in the 1970s and is currently senior instructor with the Tai Chi Union in Great Britain. His martial proficiency lends authority to his writing, while his tai chi and qigong teaching experience adds lucidity. He is clearly accustomed to explaining these concepts to his students. Using a personable, reader-friendly style backed up by clear figures and illustrations, he communicates the materials effectively enough that one can begin practicing jiangan merely by reading the book. That's quite an accomplishment!

The contents are well organized, covering history of the Chinese health wand, the gan (bamboo pole), philosophy of jiangan, and methodology of the exercises, as well as seventeen practice routines. There is a solid question-and-answer section, a guide to practicing, and several variations, as well as advanced exercises. This information should prove useful for students and teachers of the Chinese martial arts as well as most anyone interested in healthful, low-impact exercises.

Long before Tai Chi and Qigong became household names in the West, an American sailor visiting Shanghai discovered a gentle Chinese exercise called Jiangan - The Chinese Health Wand. This exercise system is simple yet potent and involves the manipulation of a lightweight pole traditionally made of bamboo. Jiangan co-ordinates slow diaphragmatic breathing with graduated stretching and strengthening exercises to promote circulation and stimulate the cardiovascular system. This book offers a concise practical guide to Jiangan exercises, providing detailed instructions and illustrations while also exploring the Chinese philosophy behind the art. Although a gentle and meditative form of exercise, this book shows that Jiangan has the muscle-toning and weight-loss potential of more robust gym workouts and is an ideal daily exercise routine or warm-up for a range of sports and martial arts classes. This book will be a valuable resource for teachers and students of Tai Chi and Qigong, as well as anyone looking for a simple and effective way to improve health and fitness using Eastern health arts.

Muscular Retraining for Pain-Free Living Review

Muscular Retraining for Pain-Free Living
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)

As a massage therapist, I found Craig Williamson's book to be both absorbing and enlightening. Williamson's book reads like a novel but explains clearly how chronic pain frequently has a neuromuscular rather than a mechanical root cause. He explains that muscle tone is influenced by the nervous system, coining the term "kinesthetic dysfunction" to describe people who are unable to tell whether or not their muscles are tense or relaxed. Williamson says that the neuromuscular system may maintain the cycle of pain long after an injury should have healed. He states, "If you think of a muscle as something that is being tightened, the implication is that someone is tightening it. That someone is you, even if you are not aware of it and do not wish to do so" (p. 62). He suggests that the reasons for musculoskeletal pain--other than structural damage--include reflexive muscular reaction from an injury, dysfunctional movement patterns, poor alignment and body use, kinesthetic dysfunction, and emotions. Although most of us who provide massage therapy do not work with clients dressed and walking about the room, as Williamson does, we can derive insights from his book to aid our understanding and treatment of chronic pain. Specifically, his book reinforces us to think of ways to help our clients become more aware - kinesthetically - of their bodies and habitual movement patterns. I highly recommend this book to LMTs and others who work with people who are in pain.

Here's an innovative and practical approach to eliminating chronic muscle pain, written by a popular occupational therapist with thirty years of experience freeing people from the discomfort of tendonitis, lower back pain, and neck and shoulder tension. These types of chronic pain can be caused by a number of factors, including old injuries, habitual movement patterns, problems with body alignment, psychological causes, and inability to sense your own body movements accurately. Muscular Retraining for Pain-Free Living clearly and concisely explains the causes of persistent muscle pain and offers a therapeutic exercise program to address these problems and end pain. This book explains the basic principles behind Williamson Muscular Retraining, a pain-relief discipline, in a way that is practical and easy to understand. The problems of poor posture, muscle tension, and stress-caused pain are corrected by seeing them through the lens of kinesthetic awareness. Normal kinesthetic awareness is lacking in much of the population and typically overlooked by health care practitioners. Muscular Retraining for Pain-Free Living presents case examples of how people have used kinesthetic awareness and exercises to change how they think of their bodies and to end pain.

Age Defying Fitness: Making the Most of Your Body for the Rest of Your Life Review

Age Defying Fitness: Making the Most of Your Body for the Rest of Your Life
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Just a great little book written by two physical therapists. The idea the book is based upon is that the antidote to aging is activity. So what kind of activity do you need?
To answer this question, the book begins by having you evaluate your physical performance so you can identify those areas that you need the most work in. Thus, you complete five tests that assess your posture, strength, balance, flexibility, and endurance- or what the book calls "the five domains."
After finishing these tests, you should have a pretty good idea of what areas you need the most work on. From there, you just go to the posture chapter or the balance chapter, or the strength chapter and so on- whatever chapters you need the most.
Each chapter contains additional "tests" for the reader to do to further hone in on problem areas. These are kinda neat and very easy for just about anybody to do. After these specific tests, easy-to-do exercises are provided. For instance, the posture chapter contains a lot of stretching exercises. the strengthening exercises use a theraband which comes with the book, the balance exercises (there are eight) are simple i.e. stand on one leg, flexibility exercises which cover your neck area down to your legs, and endurance exercises such as walking, jumping rope or cycling.
The book ends with a brief chapter called "Putting It All Together" which ties up loose ends such as coping with soreness and staying consitent with exercise.
All-in-all its a neat book with a wealth of evidence-based information and simple exercises you can do with little or no equipment. Other books I liked in the body repair genre include Treat Your Own Rotator Cuff if you have a shoulder problem or rotator cuff tear that keeps you from exercising. Good luck with the tune-up!

The Rider's Fitness Program Review

As a week-end rider, I eagerly anticipated the release of this book because I wanted to target my riding muscles to help me improve.
The first disappointment came when I realized I needed to belong to a gym. They do give you home alternatives for some, not all, of the exercises but many are not workable, requiring anchor points at specific heights for the resistance band alternatives. I supposed I could tap a bunch of screw eyes into one wall and the ceiling, but I bet my landlord wouldn't be too happy!

There was also a pretty complete set of equipment you were expected to own; benches, free weights, weight bars, ankle and wrist weights, exercise balls, medicine balls, resistance bands, tilt boards, rollers, etc. The helpful web link to sources of the equipment took me straight to one of the author's equipment sales web page. I had about half the equipment needed and am being resourceful for the things I don't have. Free weights, exercise balls, medicine balls, resistance bands and tilt boards are all going to be needed.
The second disappointment was most of the exercises were the same old same old. Some of them were packaged a bit differently and toward the end of the six week series, the exercises look more interesting, combining strength, balance and posture in one exercise. (I have read the whole book and have completed week one)
At first, I thought the layout of the book was a bit awkward, but as I began to use it, it bacame clear the variations in routine (One of the things I really like about the book) makes the layout necessary. There is a warm-up/stretch section without a lot of instruction, so I just used what I thought was appropriate for that days workout.
A good bit of information is included in the Introduction so read it carefully.
I was hoping for something a bit more revolutionary, but if you are lifting weights and doing a core based workout such as Pilates, you won't find anything different in this book.
I am planning on doing the whole six week series as directed, so if something exciting occurs down the road, I'll come back and amend my review.

this book really amazed me. the title alone drew me to it. i am a Pilates instructor and i wanted to learn as much as i could about the body and mind working together. this book breaks down the body into different areas, gives you a little anatomy lesson, and gives activities to connect with that body part. some are meditations and some are hands-on. it gives you a better idea of your own relationship to your body as well as a sense of gratitude for all it does for us. truly a gem!
