15 Minute Better Back Workout (+DVD)

I was a bit overwhelmed at first thinking I had to review and figure out every single exercise before starting so I just stuck the DVD in. Most exercises were easy to follow with the model and the ones that were a bit tricky I just looked up in the book.
As I'm recovering from a back injury I'm taking it slow and can only do 1 or 2 of the sessions at a time, but I can see doing all in the future for a nice workout. The moves are only repeated a few times so if one is particularly difficult you know it won't last forever!

Soft Tissue Release Review

Soft Tissue Release
Average Reviews:

This is an easy to use book. I have little knowledge of the subject and obtained the book to help me understand what I need to know. It is thorough and the step by step photos really help although they could do with updating. There is an excellent page on situations where soft tissue release can help. Some exercises can be done on your own, others you need someone to work on. It includes muscle diagrams and simply everything you need to know. This review first appeared on Karen Platt's book review website.

Soft Tissue Release is a clear, concise, and practical book that guides you in understanding and applying the three types of soft tissue release (STR): passive (clients do not help), active assisted (clients and therapists work together), and active (clients do it on their own). Rather than focus on the specific purposes of soft tissue release, this text provides basic information about the therapy and prepares readers to perform the techniques. The result is a text that professionals and students in massage therapy, physiotherapy, and osteopathy will find invaluable.

Soft Tissue Release thoroughly explains the differences between the three types of STR by providing step-by-step descriptions on performing each type along with the key holds, moves, and stances for various muscles. The descriptions are accompanied by handy reference charts indicating the types of clients and situations in which each technique is particularly useful. Complete instructions explain how to apply STR to various parts of the body—the trunk, the lower limbs, and the upper limbs—and detail the advantages and disadvantages of each technique. Numerous full-color photos depict the locks and stretches.

The book also explains how to use alternative options—such as massage tools and forearms, fists, and elbows—to protect the hands and thumbs from overuse. Tips sidebars provide short, practical comments on applying the techniques, while Client Talk boxes share the author's experiences and provide insight on situations that a therapist is likely to encounter. Each chapter ends with Quick Questions to test knowledge of the information, and answers are provided at the end of the book. A quick-reference photo index allows readers to look up techniques based on the client's position—prone, supine, sitting, or side lying—and find the page number for the complete instructions for that technique.

Finally, Soft Tissue Release shows how to incorporate the proper techniques into a treatment program. The book guides readers through the consultation process and provides examples of initial questions to ask clients and various assessment forms that therapists can use in identifying clients' needs. Using case studies and comparisons, the book shows how the data gleaned from clients can guide the design of an effective treatment program.

Soft Tissue Release will help the STR techniques come alive through its clear, detailed instruction and the numerous photos showing the techniques being applied by professionals. Whether you are a student or a professional, Soft Tissue Release will help you gain proficiency and confidence in these techniques.

Healing Joint Pain Naturally: Safe and Effective Ways to Treat Arthritis, Fibromyalgia, and Other Joint Diseases

The author is not a medical practitioner, but she does share with the reader her own experiences with the various natural approaches to alleviating joint pain. The book helped me realize I'd have to be responsible for my healing and figure out what works for me and what doesn't. I think it's important to check with the experts regarding medical advice, but I found her information a good source of ideas worth researching further.
My wrist pain was initially misdiagnosed as rheumatoid arthritis (due to a mix up with the blood work), which is why I picked up this book. Although we eventually discovered the mistake the physician had made and I was correctly diagnosed with carpal tunnel syndrome, I still found the information in this book helpful.

This is merely an introduction to Active Release Therapy and its potential in the treatment of Repetitive Strain Injuries. There is NO INSTRUCTION on how to apply ART. Consider it promotional material for Dr. Leahy . The bulk of the book is made up of an overview of common Injuries (causes, treatment options, selected exercises and stretches). One has to train and test with the author to become an ART practitioner.

Bonnie Prudden's After Fifty Fitness Guide Review

Bonnie Prudden's After Fifty Fitness Guide
Average Reviews:

Bonnie Prudden calls people over 50 "the last fit Americans." By this she means that older people built their bodies to be strong and functional, by playing outdoors as children, walking to school, etc. Even if their fitness has declined, it can be regained. Ms. Prudden debunks myths about older people ("you can't teach an old dog new tricks," "all old people end up in nursing homes," etc.) and presents a clear, simple fitness test to use in taking stock of one's life and current fitness level. She presents her time-tested exercise program, relating exercises to specific problems such as "gardener's back," "stairs - going up and coming down," etc. Along with the exercises, Ms. Prudden discusses Myotherapy, the pain relief method she developed, and gives corrective exercises for many pain problems (migraine, sciatica, whiplash, etc.)as well as "immediate mobilization" techniques to use after an acute injury. Interspersed with more exercises are descriptions of pain problems related to various occupations and sports. For those who are chair-bound or unsteady on their feet, exercises that can be done in a chair are presented.

Breathworks for Your Back Review

Breathworks for Your Back

(More customer reviews)
Ms. Swayzee wrote her book for the lay person, yet you will find that it is not at all simplistic. IF YOU WANT RELIEF FROM LOW BACK PAIN OR IF YOU HAVE A HEALTHY BACK AND YOU WANT TO KEEP IT THAT WAY you must learn how to function, day to day, utilizing a stable trunk. This means, that YOUR UPPER BODY AND LOWER BODY NEED TO LEARN TO STAY TOGETHER AS A SINGLE, STABILIZED, UNIT as you lift, work, carry, etc. This book tells you how to use your inner abdominal muscles to achieve a stable trunk. In my opinion, the critical discovery set forth in this book is the use of forced-expiration breathing to achieve a body stabilizing abdominal contraction. This technique allows instant access to a stable trunk and can therefore be used moment to moment, throughout the day. I use her method constantly all day long. This is the only effective way I know to protect the back during the damaging rigors of everyday life. It allows a person to quickly target the proper abdominal muscles and then to maintain a more powerful, more sustained abdominal contraction when needed. During quieter activities when I am not lifting, pulling, pushing, carrying etc. I maintain a constant 10% to 15% contraction as a matter of routine posture. I look better and I feel better. IN FACT AFTER TWO YEARS OF SERIOUS DAILY LOW BACK PAIN, I FEEL GREAT!! If practiced for a few weeks, this health-preserving technique soon develops into a reflex that becomes automatic. THIS BOOK CAN CHANGE YOUR LIFE!

Wear and Tear: Stop the Pain and Put the Spring Back in Your Body Review

Wear and Tear: Stop the Pain and Put the Spring Back in Your Body
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I enjoyed Dr. Bob Arnot's "Wear And Tear: Stop The Pain And Put The Spring Back In Your Body." It's called a complete anti-aching program on the cover, and I find it a very useful book of advice for those who have the aches and pains from using your body the way it was meant to be used, to the fullest. It focuses on the wear and tear that erodes joints and stiffens ligaments and tendons and what you can do about it.
The first part of the book deals with what causes wear and tear. The five chapters are Heal Pounders, Stiff Man Syndrome, Fatal Flaws, The Weak Link, and Overload. These chapters focus on proper biomechanics, the lack of stretching and becoming stiff, skeletal malalignment, loss of muscle strength, and overloading your body with excess fat. The chapters are easy to understand and informative.
Part two is the section of the book I liked the most, it focuses on beating wear and tear. The first chapter of part two, chapter six, contains methods for killing the pain. Dr. Arnot discusses the options of painkillers like Acetaminophen, NSAIDs, and Aspirin. He also addresses other methods including topical analgesics, injections, acupuncture, and massage.
The next chapter is one protecting your joints and the chapter makes the case for taking glucosamine and chondroitin. Dr. Arnot addressed why they work, side effects, and the Arthritis Foundation recommendations among other things in this chapter.
Chapter eight is called Fix the Flaws and discusses correct shoes and other solutions for different problems causing wear and tear. This includes some expert picks for shoes, but since they come out with new models faster than new cars, actual shoes may have changed, but the advice as what to look for is still good.
Chapter nine, Restore Your Joints, is a very good chapter about how yoga can help reduce the pain of wear and tear. Dr. Arnot tells why yoga works, how to do a yoga program, warnings regarding some postures, breathing, and targets. The chapter contains some drawings of simple postures to begin with. I think the chapter is enough to get a person motivated to seek out further yoga instruction or resources to incorporate into a health and fitness program.
The next chapter, Build Protective Strength, is a short chapter on the importance of strength training and includes a few exercises. I agree this is very important, and think one should seek out resources that focus on strength training to further their education in this area. The next chapter continues with this theme and has a little on plyometrics and lunges. Again, there are better resources out there, but this book should get you motivated to seek them out and start doing strength exercises.
Chapter 12 is a primer on diet. It' called Lighten the Load and has the basics of sound nutrition. It's very short, and there are more resources you'll want to get on this too, but it let's you know that diet and how much you weigh effects your joints.
The last chapter suggests some joint-friendly sports and then the book ends with an appendix on joint nutrition and a glossary.
As we age, we seem to have little aches and pains creep up on us. Dr. Arnot's "Wear And Tear" is a practical guide on slowing this wear and tear down, as well as preventing it in the first place.

The Permanent Pain Cure Review

The Permanent Pain Cure
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The Permanent Pain Cure covers the system that Ming uses to supplement the manual techniques he uses in his physical therapy practice. His methods comprise myofascial stretching and release techniques adapted largely from Guy Voyer, MD, DO and Mike Leahy's Active Release Techniques (ART). This is the only widely available book that I know of that teaches Voyer's myofascial stretching and ELDOA techniques (Ming does not use the term ELDOA, but rather spinal decompression stretches, which is basically what the French acronym ELDOA stands for). While the book does not cover the entire ELDOA and myofascial stretching system, it does teach key stretches that are probably of most benefit to the majority of readers. The ELDOAs that are shown appear to be selected according to the nerve roots that pass through the vertebral segments in question, e.g., delts, biceps, quads, hamstrings, etc.
Many of the myofascial stretches are slightly modified from Guy Voyer's original versions (at least the versions I know). However, I also think some of Ming's modifications are nice improvements. Another reviewer commented on the difficulty of the stretches. Having practiced many of Guy Voyer's stretches for the past three years and having attended his myofascial stretching seminar, I can attest to the difficulty of many of the stretches. This difficulty comes from the fact that many stretches require the simultaneous co-contraction of several muscles to create a properly targeted stretch. Another factor is that for many people, these stretches will target tissues that have never been stretched before, producing considerable resistance from the tight tissue. Consistent practice does make the stretches easier, and the payoff is well worth the effort. Some of the modifications Ming has made to the stretches make them easier to perform and give the user better leverage in some cases.
The middle section of the book covers a strengthening and conditioning program. There is nothing particularly remarkable about this section. It's good solid advice but nothing you can't find elsewhere (unlike the myofascial techniques).
The last section of the book teaches self soft tissue release techniques that are clearly modified from ART. These techniques are fairly easy to perform and in many cases can save the user the hassle and cost of seeking out an ART practitioner for minor issues. They are also excellent self maintenance techniques that can complement ART and other soft tissue work.
Overall, it's an excellent book and covers techniques that are hard to find without traveling to a few specialized (and expensive) seminars. I highly recommend it.

Pain Free for Life: How to Heal Yourself Naturally Without Drugs or Surgery Review

Pain Free for Life: How to Heal Yourself Naturally Without Drugs or Surgery
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Darrell Stoddard does a fine job of explaining the Traditional Chinese Medical theory of pain to Westerners in simple Western terms. His criticisms of Allopathic (drugs and surgery) Medicine are pretty sound, as is a great deal of the health/lifestyle advice in this book. I found it curious that the glowing reviews from doctors quoted in the book don't include Chinese Medicine practitioners, but more traditional MD's and DO's. As an acupuncturist with training in Auriculotherapy (the technique Mr. Stoddard is trained in) I learned nothing from reading this book, and found the hype wearisome. However, if you don't have Chinese Medicine or Auriculotherapy training, you may learn quite a lot from this book. If you do have such training, but aren't an expert in modern toxic issues, then you may also learn something from this book.
I really appreciated Mr. Stoddard's ideas regarding some modern problems, including mineral deficiency/dehydration, aluminum toxicity and Alzheimer's, chlorine in the tap water, and other similar issues. I didn't agree with every word, but it is presented as theory rather than fact, and much of it coincides with my own discoveries in treating chemically sensitive/allergic individuals. For many, the ideas in this book would be cutting-edge and mind-expanding in a most positive way.
Mr. Stoddard's treatments involve Auriculotherapy, which requires a professional specialist to administer, and his tape invention, which anyone can do themselves. There is no substitute for a skilled practitioner in treating challenging medical problems. However, if you don't have access to such a person, or can't afford it, I expect the tape could help you help yourself. I doubt that people treating themselves would be likely to get the kind of results that are described in the case studies presented in this book. The only real advantage I can see to using the tape over being treated by a skilled professional is that you can do it yourself. This book is directed towards people who do not know about or understand Chinese Medicine or Auriculotherapy.
As in most books written by people who are not writers, the writing could be better. Occasional sentences don't actually make sense, and the overkill hyperbole only detracts from the credibility of the message. Though the book claims that addressing blockage of meridians treats the source of pain (it does), no mention is made of treating the cause of the blockage. Though he claims to be addressing the root of the problem, he is not, but at least this approach comes closer to treating the root than allopathic approaches. Despite the book's flaws, this book could be a real education for people suffering from pain.

Overcome Neck and Back Pain Review

Overcome Neck and Back Pain
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I had the pleasure of training with Kit Laughlin and other Posture and Flexibility instructors. Prior to learning Kit's approach I often experienced muscle tension in my neck, shoulders and back. Starting with the very first lesson, I learned specific stretches which eliminate tension in these muscle groups.
In Kit's first book, `Overcome Neck and Back Pain', he introduces a self-service approach to relieve neck and back pain through improvement of whole body suppleness. He demonstrates stretches targeting not only muscles in the neck, shoulder and back, but also muscles in the pelvic area and legs which influence back pain, as the reader will learn. Specific back strengthening exercises are included to help the reader build up the muscle strength needed to maintain good posture and prevent back pain.
I have seen students of all ages and levels of flexibility benefit from using these techniques. Although a book can never replace hands-on instruction, this book will lead you on a path to overcome neck and back pain.

Fix Your Own Pain Without Drugs or Surgery Review

Fix Your Own Pain Without Drugs or Surgery
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Dr. Bookspan's approach is to teach you enough about body mechanics to understand how you are supposed to fit together, then give exercise suggestions aimed at either stretching tight areas out or sliding the parts that don't fit together back into place. A major theme is letting you feel how your muscles are supposed to work via the exercises so you can correct how you hold yourself and move all the time. Jolie speaks in terms of transferring what you learn about body mechanics by exercise into lessons for everyday life. Since the body is a system where misalignment in one area can cascade into pain in other locations, the book wraps up with some sample stories of people who started with one issue and then watched things go out of control from there. It details how these patients were eventually able to wean themselves off medicine (and often various quack "cures" like bad supplements) simply by focusing on how the body should work and exercising it until everything was back in place.
I suspect that the very active nature of these suggestions will be the main problem with this book for many people. Most solutions here are in the form of things you need to do every day for some period of time, perhaps even the rest of your life, in order to adjust your body to work the way it's supposed to as we all continue to get older. There are some quick-fixes to be found in this title, but that's the exception. For example, I had been suffering for about a year with problems related to what she calls forward-neck. In literally five minutes after reading her description of the problem (as part of the extensive free information given on the author's web site) and finally understanding what had gone wrong, I slid my neck back into place using one of her suggested exercises. There was a little pop, and just like that the pain that had been haunting me for months was gone. Hasn't been back since, because now I've learned to feel when my neck is moving in the wrong direction and correct it before it gets bad again. I can assure you that her suggestions were new to me even though I'd been searching for information on this topic regularly that entire year, finding little useful advice anywhere. That was a great lesson that took only moments to learn; the rest of what I'd like to "fix...without drugs or surgery" is going to take a series of stretches performed every day for quite some time.
The bulk of the book consists of seven chapters focusing on pain in a specific area of the body: neck/upper-back, lower-back, shoulder, hip, knee, ankle/Achilles, foot, and wrist. The chapters are aimed to be self-contained, which is both good and bad. The good side is that if you have a specific pain area you want to focus on, you can dive right into that chapter and go. The main problem with this approach is that there is quite a bit of redundant content, and often the information about a specific exercise is split across several areas. This book badly needs an index. The main saving grace of the organizational issues is that the text itself is so easy and fun to read, chock full of helpful advice on every page, that you'll eventually want to read it cover to cover anyway.
Along with the exercises, you get an outline of medical issues that might be causing problems so you don't let a more serious issue go undiagnosed. As suggested by the title, the main audience that will appreciate this book are those who have already done a tour of doctors and therapists, been through enough tests to rule out major problems, and then were told that serious medication or elective surgery were the only options available. Sometimes, that's completely incorrect, and all the patient really needs is to is reverse harmful posture and movements that are the root cause of the pain--a topic most doctors are woefully under trained at giving suggestions on.
It's not a plan for couch potatoes, but it can work. As a long-time gym rat used to suffering for my gains, the thing that impresses me the most about the specific exercises advocated here is how good they feel to perform. The week I first tried Dr. Bookspan's somewhat different back extension exercises, that felt better than anything else I did that week.
Having read most of the popular titles on this subject during the two years I've been trying to correct my own pain issues, I can tell you with some authority that this book is destined to be a classic in this area. Much of the material is unique, and all of it I've tried out has been extremely helpful. The only area I'd really suggest supplementing this title's coverage with is that of multifidus training for resolving back issues. While many of the exercises here will strengthen that area, I didn't note any that taught specifically how to note weakness there and how to focus on it. Either Jim Johnson's "The Multifidus Back Pain Solution" or Rick Jemmett's "Spinal Stabilization" would make great companion volumes to this one (and reading all three books is even better), and anyone who enjoyed those two will find this one has a similar tone and approach, but with much broader coverage.
I would recommend that you check out the book's web site, try some of the exercises presented there, and see if they seem sensible and/or feel good when you try them. If you like how a subset of Dr. Jolie Bookspan's recommendations sound, I guarantee you'll love the more comprehensive treatment offered in this book.

This book is an inspiration, not only from getting to share in the author's incredible life story, but also in that it creates the possibility of reducing/alleviating pain. I was experiencing regular and fairly high intensity pain levels in my foot, and after 15 seconds of the recommended treatment, I was pain free. I have regularly implemented the treatment and have been walking painlessly, and I would like to think a little lighter!
I really appreciate the impact that book has had on me, and I have not even owned it for more than a week. I have been recommending this book to everyone I know in pain!!

I bought this book for review and learning during my interventional MSK fellowship. It gives you what you need to know to feel comfortable with injections you haven't done before. It also give enough to help improve your current technique. In a practice where several senior attendings have been teaching injection techniques for years, this book has helped me polish my confidence. My only beef is with the in-office SI joint injection. I'd just recommend they leave this one to the specialists. Overall, this book is great for quick get-in-and-get-out information. Thanks Macnabb.

I have Peggy Brill's other book, The Core Program and I have gotten impressive results from it. I used to get searing hip pain after doing housework or intense activities - but after working with the Core Program exercises, my hip pain is gone. So, I decided to get her new book, Instant Relief. The exercises are easy to perform and described very well. The illustrations are helpful (I would have preferred pictures, but oh well.) Most importantly, they WORK. Oddly enough, I pulled my hamstring a week after buying this book. I followed the exercises for hamstrings and the pain was gone - pronto! Thanks to Peggy Brill for another well done book!

I have been a long distant runner for over 30 years.
I have run over 30 marathons, suffering many overuse injuries over the years.
I have been to orthopedists, chiropractors, massage theerapists and accupuncturists over the years for an assortment of injuries.
After reading "Muscle Medicine" I have a new clarity on the cause of many of my past problems.
Most importantly, I now have a strategy for self treatment which should resolve my problems.
As a senior runner, this material is critical!
And, the best part are the sections on prevention. I am now in control!
I feel sorry for the medical practionioners in New Jersey- no more business!!
I thank the author for sharing this information.
For athletes everywhere, this is long overdue!!!

(very amateur but determined athlete)
