The Arthritis Exercise Book: Gentle, Joint-By-Joint Exercises to Keep You Flexible and Independent Review

The Arthritis Exercise Book: Gentle, Joint-By-Joint Exercises to Keep You Flexible and Independent

In addition to the good descriptions of arthritis, I found this book to be a great collection of exercises. A complete list of gentle exercises to increase range of motion, flexibility and strength are all described and illustrated in this little book. Shortly after being diagnosed with rhumatoid arthritis I checked out an armload of arthritis books from my public library. The one that I liked the best was this common sense little volume. It is small enough to tuck into your suitcase and take on a trip or to leave on your chairside table as a reminder to do some of the exercises during the evening TV commercials. It has helped me and I highly recommend it for anyone who has been diagnosed with either osteoarthritis or rhumatoid arthritis.

The Arthritis Helpbook (mass mkt ed)
Average Reviews:

There are more than one hundred types of arthritis. The proper diagnosis treatment and management of the illness is the subject of this book. This book aims to give individuals who suffer from arthritis the tools for managing their own illness. It is written by professionals who have a comprehensive understanding of the subject. The first section of the book is devoted to 'Understanding those Aches and Pains', the second to "Your Self- Management Plan". There are also hints, tips, and gadgets given to help. And there is a chapter on 'Keeping Your Body Healthy" There is also a section in which subjects such as pain management, getting a good night's sleep, depression, fatigue and other symptoms, feelings and communication are treated. The last section of the book is devoted to providing help with finding the proper medical resources for treating the illness.
This work comes recommended by the Arthritis Foundation. It is clearly written and highly recommended.

If you have found this page you are, or you care about, an arthritis patient. You should read this book. I did, and after 27 years with severe psoriatic arthritis, my life is totally changed: after ten months on doxycycline, swelling, pain and fatigue are almost gone, and normal strength is coming back to me. What makes this book especially valuable is its description of Dr. Brown's many extraordinarily perceptive insights about arthritis, both physical and especially psychological aspects. After 5 knee surgeries and uncountable drugs I was reluctant to even try another new treatment- he understood that, and much more that I immediately identified with. This treatment may not work for everybody, but it is so safe and cheap, everyone should consider it carefully. This book gives you what you need to know (and what your doctor probably doesn't know, unfortunately). Thank you, Dr. Brown, and Henry Scammell! Note added 6/26/07: I'm still on doxycycline, and doing great- I row for exercise now and it feels wonderful.

Preventing and Reversing Arthritis Naturally: The Untold Story Review

Preventing and Reversing Arthritis Naturally: The Untold Story
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Preventing & Reversing Arthritis Naturally: The Untold Story by Raquel Martin and Dr. Karen Romano explain for us the basic ingredients necessary not only for good health in general, but specifically, for achieving freedom from arthritis.
In the fast-paced, and frequently artificial, lifestyles we live these days, most of us have lost or forgotten the peace, stamina and exuberance of truly healthy bodies and minds. Those "vehicles of the spirit" have become congested, sluggish, and often painful.
Her fascinating description of nutrients, herbs (phytonutrients), exercise, body therapies, stress management and sunlight is thorough, and well documented and referenced. But perhaps her most valuable contribution is the call for courage, personal responsibility and discipline; qualities innate in all of us, that must be nurtured and developed. Her personal experience and example attests to that, and these qualities combined with knowledge can lead any of us back naturally to our birthright of vibrant health.
The concept of natural hormone replacement explained in this book is "an idea whose time has come". It is a vital path to improving health and well-being.
Mrs Martin and Dr. Romano also outlines strategies for making the most of our present medical-pharmaceutical-insurance-system and suggests ideas for compassionately making it better.
I enthusiastically recommend this book, not only for people with arthritis, but for anyone who wishes to explore new ways to achieve optimum health. I also recommend it to my colleagues who would like to learn more about nutrition, phytonutrients and alternative/complementary medicine.
Ralph C. Lee, M.D.

Healing Joint Pain Naturally: Safe and Effective Ways to Treat Arthritis, Fibromyalgia, and Other Joint Diseases Review

Healing Joint Pain Naturally: Safe and Effective Ways to Treat Arthritis, Fibromyalgia, and Other Joint Diseases
Average Reviews:

The author is not a medical practitioner, but she does share with the reader her own experiences with the various natural approaches to alleviating joint pain. The book helped me realize I'd have to be responsible for my healing and figure out what works for me and what doesn't. I think it's important to check with the experts regarding medical advice, but I found her information a good source of ideas worth researching further.
My wrist pain was initially misdiagnosed as rheumatoid arthritis (due to a mix up with the blood work), which is why I picked up this book. Although we eventually discovered the mistake the physician had made and I was correctly diagnosed with carpal tunnel syndrome, I still found the information in this book helpful.

Maximizing the Arthritis Cure: A Step-By-Step Program to Faster, Stronger Healing During Any Stage of the Cure Review

Maximizing the Arthritis Cure: A Step-By-Step Program to Faster, Stronger Healing During Any Stage of the Cure
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is the requisite "book biz" follow-up to their earlier book, The Arthritis Cure: The Medical Miracle that Can Heal, Reverse, and May Even Cure Osteoarthritis (1997), which I'll also report on here, treating both books as one. My initial reaction was, this is either a public service or a hustle. Written by three different laureled academics and obviously put together by committee, the earlier book was a big time best seller and occasioned this sequel. Most of the diet advice was like something I had read twenty years ago. The exercise program ditto. The use of glucosamine and chondroitin was the real difference. In fact, the purpose of the book could be seen as legitimizing the use of these supplements in the treatment of osteoarthritis. People bought the book in the hope that it would help them with their pain. They also bought the book so that they would be motivated to try glucosamine and chondroitin. Many people understandably would not try the supplements without the seal of approval provided by an authoritative book like this. The question is-and it is the big question-is their program any good, or is it just another feel good pep talk fronting for another bogus approach? I was a little uncertain since the book jacket was red, white and blue, and we all know the quote about patriotism being "the last refuge of a scoundrel."
So I tried glucosamine and chondroitin and stayed fairly close to their overall program. Two years have passed and although I cannot say for certain, it is my belief that the supplements are valuable. At any rate, my arthritic knee is much improved.
In the follow-up book, the authors give information on other treatments.
I have to say that I think they've done a positive service in writing these two books. The information about healing in general and about prevention and about the positive effects of exercise and attitude are worthwhile. The authors may have made megabucks (or maybe they didn't), but I don't feel they ripped anybody off, on the contrary. I am happy to be positive even though I still think "cure" is probably too strong a word for what their program can do, although I only have my own experience to go on. Their reports of the double blind tests that have been conducted are good, but a long way from convincing proof that glucosamine and chrondoitin and exercises can cure osteoarthritis.

I really love this book. It offers grounded and practical suggestions about how to get moving when nothing else seems to work. It helps with attitudes and perceptions about having this condition -- the author also suffers with arthritis. It's hopeful to hear how she worked her way from having no mobility to being able to resume normal, joyful living.
I've found this book to be a gem as I deal with my own rheumatoid arthritis.

Ageless Pilates: The Secret to Moving Comfortably, Easily and Pain-free for the Rest of Your Life Review

Ageless Pilates: The Secret to Moving Comfortably, Easily and Pain-free for the Rest of Your Life
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
As a Pilates and Fitness teacher for the last 21 years, I have developed two seemingly at-odds specialties: rehabilitative Pilates & Fitness for people living with illness, injury, and pain and bikini body Pilates & Fitness for the Sports Illustrated and Victoria's Secret swimsuit supermodel Raica Oliveira and others. So when I saw a preview of fellow Pilates professional Christine Binnendyk's Ageless Pilates: The Secret to Moving Comfortably, Easily and Pain-free for the Rest of Your Life, which promises to teach readers how to stay strong and pain-free throughout their lives, I was impressed enough to want to read the whole book.
Binnendyk's focus in her Ageless Pilates System is always movement without pain, and she tries in this book to break down the complexities of Pilates exercise into bite size pieces for people to more easily digest. The book is divided into 15 minute movement lessons and then more complex 30 minute Pilates-based workouts. She also offers modifications for those with back pain, arthritis, and osteoporosis.
While Binnendyk clearly knows her stuff, the book's layout is so crowded that I found it hard to follow what to do. There are a lot of photos where the models are wearing all black so it is difficult to see body position, along with explanations, watchpoints, and do's and don'ts. The main organizational principle seems to be the ABCs -- Anchor Points (which main areas to focus on), Body Geometry Tips (specific biomechanics to focus on), and Comfort Options (tips on how to stay pain free in a given exercise).
But there is almost too much information here, especially for newbies to Pilates. Something I find important in my teaching is keeping it simple by just explaining exactly what to do and why it's important. Short clear explanations of movements work well for most people. Too much and they tune out or get bored. And while there are some nice basic exercises in here, there are very few recognizable historical Pilates mat exercises and a whole lot of what we call pre-Pilates, or smaller movements. While that is not a huge issue for me, there are many Pilates teachers and students who might question the title.
Ageless Pilates could use some editing to make the explanations easier to follow and would definitely benefit from a cleaner layout and better photos. Still, when all is said and done it offers a good solid introduction to Pilates-based exercise for the general public.

This book is an inspiration, not only from getting to share in the author's incredible life story, but also in that it creates the possibility of reducing/alleviating pain. I was experiencing regular and fairly high intensity pain levels in my foot, and after 15 seconds of the recommended treatment, I was pain free. I have regularly implemented the treatment and have been walking painlessly, and I would like to think a little lighter!
I really appreciate the impact that book has had on me, and I have not even owned it for more than a week. I have been recommending this book to everyone I know in pain!!
Thank you Luann!

After checking ARTHRITIS: WHAT EXERCISES WORK out of the library for the third time in a year, I broke down and bought it. It's terrific. The exercises are tied to specific joints, ranging from the small, fingers and toes, on to shoulders, hips, knees, etc. Some you can even do in bed, but many are much more challenging--there is a range. Doing these for just a couple of weeks increased my flexibility tremendously--washing my back, tieing my shoes, and so forth much easier. And I'm a 53 year old professional female who is in "good shape" with aerobics and strength training--but the targeted flexibility/joint exercises here were new to me. I highly, highly recommend.

Yoga for Wellness: Healing with the Timeless Teachings of Viniyoga
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I was fortunate to obtain an advance copy of this book at the recent SouthWest Yoga Conference. Over 100 copies sold out in 3 days. No wonder, for in a crowded field, this is a landmark book. Not only yoga therapy, but also for yoga practice in general. Based upon deep understanding of the principles of movement, breath and adaptation, many principles and illustrative examples of therapeutic yoga applications are presented for common aches and pains, chronic disease and emotional health. These sections are preceeded by short, relevant discussions of the anatomy and physiology involved. It is worthwhile to stress that the therapeutic applications are not isolated or stand alone examples but rather logically derive from the Viniyoga principles which are clearly, if succinctly presented in the first two chapters; Principles of Practice and Biomechanics of Movement. These explanations alone may be worth the price of the book for serious yoga students, for the Viniyoga principles are somewhat revolutionary from the perspective of many contemporary yoga practices in America. Yet, when well presented, they are eye opening, intuitive and persuasive, as I am sure many attendees of Gary's popular lecture "Reading the Body for Yoga Therapy" will attest.

The Arthritis Handbook: Improve Your Health and Manage the Pain of Osteoarthritis (A DiaMedica Guide to Optimum Wellness) Review

The Arthritis Handbook: Improve Your Health and Manage the Pain of Osteoarthritis (A DiaMedica Guide to Optimum Wellness)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This book is inaccurately titled. Stedman's Medical Dictionary states arthritis is: "inflammation of a joint or a state characterized by inflammation of joints," but this book does not cover the majority of the over 120 types of arthritis that exist. This book only covers osteoarthritis, which the author states is the most common. If you have osteoarthritis and have not kept up to date with current complementary medicine then this is a good book for you. If you have osteoarthritis of the knee or hip, then it is excellent. The best part of this book is the author's clear explanations of how you can alter the course of this debilitating disease. There is some repetition of exercises due to the way the author chose to organize his material, providing recommendations for those with disease of the knee and hip. This book would benefit those formally diagnosed with osteoarthritis and those who have known injuries to joints that are likely to predispose them to developing osteoarthritis.

According to conventional wisdom, arthritis pain is an inevitable part of aging. Not so, says Dr. Grant Cooper in this practical, accessible guide. For those who do develop osteoarthritic conditions, this book offers a blend of commonsense advice, dietary info, targeted exercise, and tips on useful supplements. According to the author, sufferers can often entirely avoid the use of medication, injection therapy, and surgery - approaches that, when necessary, can be used as an opportunity to return to exercise and nutrition to slow the disease's progress. The book features easy, illustrated exercises, including aerobics and strength training, that can be done at home, at a gym, or under a trainer's or physical therapist's supervision. Nutritional and supplement strategies - including glucosamine and fish oil - are presented in detail, along with suggestions for ways to keep on track. Dr. Cooper not only explores each topic in depth but explains how it fits into an overall holistic treatment program.

Yoga for Arthritis: The Complete Guide Review

Yoga for Arthritis: The Complete Guide

Get this book if you have arthritis, would like to try some exercise for it, and like yoga. Well, even if you don't like yoga, there are a lot of reasons to try it- such as it's safe and gentle, and you can do it in the privacy of your own home. A few of the things I liked best...
-the book is about yoga for people with "arthritis"-whether you have rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis, or even a form of arthritis known as ankylosing spondylitis. This is what makes this book so good- it works for all the different types.
-the book is written in layman's terms. The book does go into some technical explanations about what arthritis is and explains how the joints work at the beginning of each chapter- but not to worry, its all very understandable
-the book's about an inch thick which is mainly because of its numerous pictures of all the exercises- which is a big plus for visual learners like me
-chapters are arranged by body part, for example the shoulders, the wrist and hand, etc., so no arthritic area is left out. Chapter 5 is an "All-Stars" chapter that contains a generalized program if you don't want to focus on one specific area(s).
All-in-all its just a very well-rounded, complete book that is really well-written and illustrated. If you've got arthritis, I can tell you you're going to feel a lot better when you get those joints working better, and this book can certainly help you do that. Other helpful arthritic books I liked include Treat Your Own Knee Arthritis.

Unless you're illiterate, I can't think of a single reason for anyone with painful arthritis to not read this book. It's cheap, can be delivered right to your door, and gives the reader a wealth of info about arthritis. Here's some of what it can do for you:
-helps you undertand what is going on in arthritic joints
-covers what supplements have been shown to help fight arthritis. And just running out to the store and buying a bottle of "glucosamine" isn't good enough- the book will help you choose specific brands that the author has meticulously evaluated. Dosages are also covered.
-provides you with a specific 9-step program
-discusses painkillers
-goes through the role of exercise in arthritis and how to choose the best type for you
As you can see, the book covers a lot of information and is very complete- in fact there's even a section on beating the blues that can affect a lot of people with arthritis. So if you have painful arthritis and are looking for a resource to point you in the right direction, I suggest checking out this book. It's cheap, helpful, and based on a lot of sound science. Other research-based books on arthritis I liked include Treat Your Own Knee Arthritis.
