Bellydancing for Fitness: The Sexy Art That Tones Your Abs, Butt, and Thighs Review

I just bought this book yesterday. I am very happy with my purchase; more so with the purchase of her videos. What made me pick the book up off the shelf was the vivid color pictures on the front and back covers. That is was also made me buy it. Rania manages to overcome the hurdle of trying to teach dance moves from a book by having 3 or 4 serial shots of her performing some of the moves. She also demonstrates the importance of proper posture by showing several side views of herself performing.
What I also liked is the fact that she devotes a chapter to describing the aerobic benefits of Bellydance, then underneath the title of each move she demonstrates, she gives a brief description of what the benefits are for that particular move.
She also demonstrates the Khaleegy Head Toss and the Zar Head Roll, mentioning that that the head roll should only be done once or twice, lest you hurt your neck.
There is a short chapter on the history of Bellydance, her own introduction to the dance, layering movements for a routine, balancing and floor work, use of a veil, warm-ups, and a glossary of terms.
She lost one star because the included music CD was so-so (some of it was a repeat from the Bellydance Divas dvd), and the fact that she says in the book that she tells people all the time that Bellydance is her only workout; she does not lift weights. Then she mentions in another part of the book that she used to take gymnastics when she was younger. That gave me the impression that she was never overweight (like I am now). So I think that she has no knowledge of what it takes to "Shimmy away the fat"
However, I am happy that I bought this book.
CHALLENGE: I would like to challenge Rania or another certified fitness trainer/dancer to take an overweight person and slim them down and get them fit with bellydance and diet alone.

This book is a valuable resource for anyone working with senior adults. From the clear anatomy lesson to the safe and sane exercises this book should be on everyone's bookshelf. I really appreciated the illustrations and the great photos -- you really get the right idea of how the exercises should be done. Yoga for Arthritis: The Complete Guide Review

Yoga for Arthritis: The Complete Guide

Get this book if you have arthritis, would like to try some exercise for it, and like yoga. Well, even if you don't like yoga, there are a lot of reasons to try it- such as it's safe and gentle, and you can do it in the privacy of your own home. A few of the things I liked best...
-the book is about yoga for people with "arthritis"-whether you have rheumatoid arthritis, osteoarthritis, or even a form of arthritis known as ankylosing spondylitis. This is what makes this book so good- it works for all the different types.
-the book is written in layman's terms. The book does go into some technical explanations about what arthritis is and explains how the joints work at the beginning of each chapter- but not to worry, its all very understandable
-the book's about an inch thick which is mainly because of its numerous pictures of all the exercises- which is a big plus for visual learners like me
-chapters are arranged by body part, for example the shoulders, the wrist and hand, etc., so no arthritic area is left out. Chapter 5 is an "All-Stars" chapter that contains a generalized program if you don't want to focus on one specific area(s).
All-in-all its just a very well-rounded, complete book that is really well-written and illustrated. If you've got arthritis, I can tell you you're going to feel a lot better when you get those joints working better, and this book can certainly help you do that. Other helpful arthritic books I liked include Treat Your Own Knee Arthritis.

Heal Your Hips: How to Prevent Hip Surgery -- and What to Do If You Need It Review

Heal Your Hips: How to Prevent Hip Surgery -- and What to Do If You Need It

I'm 38 and very active. After fracturing the posterior lip of my right acetabulum in a mountain bike crash, i thought my hip was healed and 6 months later I was back in the gym working out and getting strong. That is until one day I suffered an anterior post traumatic injury of the same hip, which instantly turned me into a limpin gimp.
After going through the motions of x-rays/bone scans/MRIs, and dealing with the prospects of AVN, early hip replacement, and a young conventionally trained orthopedic surgeon, that worked for a large California HMO (the mane starts with a K) I decided to research alternatives to an open procedure, that the K-suregeon was more than ready to perform, which may or may not have helped me, but would've guaranteed me a long recovery and allot of pain.
That's when I found Dr. Klapper. He evaluated my condition, felt I had a good case of arthritis setting in, among other things, and that I'd be a candidate for arthroscopic surgery to clean up the hip joint, and relieve the pain further. But before he'd agree to that he insisted that I go to PT, and purchase his very inexpensive book to see how much it would help heal the hip in a non-invasive manner.
With no exaggeration, by the 3rd time I'd gone through what I thought were the most benign, SIMPLE land exercises I started to regain stability in my hip which had been killing me with every step, kept me close to home, stopped me from venturing too far from the car, and worrying me for months on end.
It's been 5 months of work outs now and I'm getting more, and more back to normal after every workout. Though I will still have the scope surgery performed, I can't praise this book enough on how it helped me regain mobility, strength, and brought back my confidence. If you have a hip problem, BUY THIS BOOK, it gave me back a HUGE chunk of my normal active life style.

The Fit Arthritic: Fighting Knee and Hip Arthritis with Exercise.

A concise, easy to read and necessary little book for anyone with OA (osteoarthritis). THE FIT ARTHRITIC is full of invaluable practical and medical knowledge. My husband, a Family Practice physician, recommends it to his patients. Dr. Kelton himself is personally challenged by OA and his honesty is compelling. Reading (and rereading) this handbook inspires one to work at a proven and realistic way to not only be comfortable in your body, but also fit.

Healing Hip, Joint, and Knee Pain: A Mind-Body Guide to Recovery from Surgery and Injuries
Average Reviews:

I bought this book hoping to help avoid hip surgery. This is much more a manual for post operative recovery than anything about healing pre-surgery. The book is made wider in scope by doing exactly what the title does. That is, explaining all about post operative recovery and then just adding the words "and injury" to a sentence here and there.

Studies show that patients who contribute to their own treatment and recovery fare better in rehabilitation.Tailoring the concept for those suffering from joint pain, orthopedic psychologist Kate O'Shea draws from her patients and her own congenital hip orblems (she has four major surgeries by the time she was thirteen) to describe a program for caring for the emotional and physical body while healing joint pain or after surgery. I was looking for a book to guide me in postponing or avoiding hip replacement surgery. The title "The Active Person's Guide to Taking Charge" prompted me to buy this book, but I was disappointed in the book because so little of it was devoted to really taking charge of your physical situation so that you can strengthen your hip and achieve its maximum flexability. A better choice for those wishing to do everything in their power to avoid or postone surgery would be Dr. Klapper's book, "Heal Your Hips", which is also available from Amazon.com
