After living with chronic pain after a car accident over 24 years ago, I thought it was my lot in life. No amount of chiropractic, massage, yoga or pilates seemed to help. Even after meeting Dr. Rothbart and hearing him speak, I did not think his work truly pertained to me. It wasn't until I read this lucid explanation of all that pains us and what we can do about it, did I see myself as a chronic pain sufferer. I'm sure anyone in chronic pain will see themselves in this work, but they will now know without a doubt that they do not have to go through life this way.
Needless to say, I have been pain free for almost 6 months. What a relief.

Coming this summer, this thoroughly up-to-date and practical reference book discusses all aspects of the knee.It is a mustfor sports therapists, physiotherapists, and any health professional involved in the assessment and management of knee injuries. Over the last 10 years the knee joint has been, perhaps, the most widely researched and published joint in the literature. The body of knowledge on the knee has been expanded from the standpoint of laboratory, clinical and preventive research. This book aims to organize a format from which clinicians can heighten their awareness and appreciation of the knee joint. It lays out a logical order to deal with dysfunction of knee disorders, so the clinician understands the anatomic structure and biomechanical principles of normal function. Once evaluation is completed a holistic plan of care can be designed and implemented. The latter part of the book provides clinicians with comprehensive protocol guidelines.

A concise, easy to read and necessary little book for anyone with OA (osteoarthritis). THE FIT ARTHRITIC is full of invaluable practical and medical knowledge. My husband, a Family Practice physician, recommends it to his patients. Dr. Kelton himself is personally challenged by OA and his honesty is compelling. Reading (and rereading) this handbook inspires one to work at a proven and realistic way to not only be comfortable in your body, but also fit.

I thought that this book contained an informative behind the scenes look at the orthopedic world. Although I believe that many are not out to simply get you in surgery, I'm sure there are a good portion that are and this book will give you cues on how to spot a happy cutting surgeon. This book will also awaken you to the fact that the doctor is merely a human being, sometimes making educated guesses into your condition.
I love the author's approach and direct writing style. This book gives some information about virtually any knee problem that can arise. Most likely it will affirm you to wait, try some exercises and see how it feels. It will also give you ideas on questions to ask the doctor, as well as give you a thorough understanding of the anatomy of the knee (as of 2002).

Olderman has done it again. This is the 3rd book in his series that I have read. I used his neck book and with just correcting my posture I got rid of 80% of my chronic neck pain from the last 26 years. I have already started changing the way I walk and stand, focusing on my glutes and hips. I am confident that the knee pain that I've had from childhood gymnastics will soon disappear. Thanks, Rick, for pain free living - at last!

Treat Your Own Knee Arthritis Review

Treat Your Own Knee Arthritis
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I'm always keeping my eye out for knee arthritis treatments and found this book. It's written by a physical therapist and is divided up into 9 chapters:
-Chapter 1 is "Here's What's Going On In Your Knee". It explains the structures of your knee that are involved in knee arthritis. This chapter is about 20 pages long and contains about 20 pictures- so there's not a lot of boring reading, but rather simple explanations coupled with great illustrations. Trust me, you'll know what's going on in your knee in pictures after reading this chapter.
-Chapter 2 is "What's Likely to Happen to Your Knee Over the Long Run". This is the chapter where the author talks about the course that arthritis takes. It's filled with studies that have followed people over many years with arthritis- and come to find out arthritis doesn't always take a downhill courses. In fact its highly variable from one person to another.
-the next four chapters are the meat and potatoes- the treatments. Here the book shows you how to make your knee stronger, more flexible, improve its position sense, and endurance. The exercises here are designed to target specific problems that arthritic knees have been found to have in research studies.
-Chapter 7 pulls the exercies together into a six-week program. Now this was something you don't see much. You get workout sheets for six-weeks, and the sheets contain the pictures of each of the exercises and a place to check off that you've done it for that day. I liked this because there's absolutely no confusion as to what to do, and it keeps you on track everyday. But perhaps the best part is that the whole program takes just a few minutes a day to do, aside from the endurance exercise.
-Chapter 8 contains a questionnaire to help you measure your progress, and the last chapter is references.
My overall recommendation is to get this book if you have knee arthritis to get better educated. There's a lot of confusion sometimes as to what's going on in your knee, and as the book points out, knee arthritis if far from just a case of worn-down cartilage- you've got a lot of other structures affected, and perhaps more importantly, a lot of vital knee functions are being lost you probably weren't aware of (like proprioception which helps protect your knee joint). Use this book to restore them.

The Knee Crisis Handbook: Understanding Pain, Preventing Trauma, Recovering from Knee Injury, and Building Healthy Knees for Life Review

The Knee Crisis Handbook: Understanding Pain, Preventing Trauma, Recovering from Knee Injury, and Building Healthy Knees for Life
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I just read this book after getting it for Christmas yesterday, and I think it's great. After getting nowhere with two doctors, a physical therapist, and conflicting information I've gathered talking to friends and acquaintances over the years, I think this book will give me the insight and exercises I need to make some progress in strengthening my knee so I can participate in activities I had to give up (dancing and biking) and can make a much more informed decision about possible surgery. All different types of knee problems are well explained. Alignment issues (including Q-angle, foot arch, femur to tibia, patella tracking, etc.) and how they can lead to certain types of injury are explained in a way I have not seen done elsewhere. Also included are what movement tests your doctor should take in diagnosing your injury (neither doctor I went to performed those simple tests!). I wish I had been able to read this book a few years ago when my overuse dance injury occurred, but I had not found a book so specific to the knee out on the market (this book was recently published in 2003). I would recommend this book to anyone starting to experience knee pain, as well as anyone active in sports that are known to lead to knee injury; there are exercises and stretching recommended in this book to help avoid knee injury and to strengthen the knee area to possibly avoid or delay surgery. I'm very glad the doctor/author decided to write this much-needed book!

I recently had arthroscopic knee surgery and although I had professional therapy afterwards I was looking for a book I could refer to and perhaps learn more about the knee. I had to wait for this book to be published as it was brand new, but well worth the wait. It is clearly written and has loads of information on the knee and ways to protect it and strengthen it. I highly recommend it.

Treat Your Own Knees: Simple Exercises to Build Strength, Flexibility, Responsiveness and Endurance Review

Treat Your Own Knees: Simple Exercises to Build Strength, Flexibility, Responsiveness and Endurance
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This remarkable little book may change the way you think about knee pain. Instead of focusing on pain symptoms and where they originate, the author focuses on what your knee does - and how to improve those functions with simple exercises. The only anatomy lesson you need is to know where your quadriceps and hamstring muscles are - front and rear of your thigh respectively.
He identifies four functions in your knee: strength, flexibility, proprioception/balance, and endurance. If you have unexplainable knee pain, you probably just need to improve your knee function in one or more of the four functional areas. The author suggests simple exercises in each functional category.
To develop strength, the single most important muscles to develop are your quadriceps. There are many exercises you can do to strengthen your quads. The author suggests a very simple floor exercise.
To develop flexibility, the author suggests a quad and a hamstring stretch. The exercises he suggests can be done standing or on the floor.
Proprioception might be a strange word to you. It was to me. It is probably best described as a combination of coordination and balance. Can you accurately sense what your knee is doing? Does it react appropriately to changes as you move? This is what proprioception is all about. The simple and interesting exercise the author suggests to improve proprioception is simply to stand on one leg for 30 seconds. Then switch legs. (It's ok to have a wall or chair to help catch you if you start to fall.) You might find this exercise easy to master. If so, the author suggests doing the exercise with your eyes closed. This may require considerable practice!
The author suggests that you can build endurance simply by walking or stationary bicycling.
And that's the entire program for treating your knee pain. Some readers may feel letdown or short-changed. What about all the anatomy lessons other practitioners give you? What about issues relating to your tendons, ligaments, bones, and cartilage? What is the theory behind this skimpy program?
Chapter 6 gives you the surprising answers to these questions. The author reviews many scientific studies on knee pain. The studies (based on X ray or MRI testing) show that the existence and/or severity of knee pain/disability have little correlation to the amount of knee deterioration. Many people with severe knee deterioration reported no pain, and some had their symptoms decline over time. The factors most closely linked to knee pain/disability were muscle strength, obesity, age, and psychological health. The author is a physical therapist and not a dietician, gerontologist, or psychologist. His knee program does as much for your knee as science suggests physical therapy can do.
The author recognizes that surgery and medications seem to help a lot of people, but the available research suggests that most people will benefit from the low-tech solutions he offers.
