I'm 38 and very active. After fracturing the posterior lip of my right acetabulum in a mountain bike crash, i thought my hip was healed and 6 months later I was back in the gym working out and getting strong. That is until one day I suffered an anterior post traumatic injury of the same hip, which instantly turned me into a limpin gimp.
After going through the motions of x-rays/bone scans/MRIs, and dealing with the prospects of AVN, early hip replacement, and a young conventionally trained orthopedic surgeon, that worked for a large California HMO (the mane starts with a K) I decided to research alternatives to an open procedure, that the K-suregeon was more than ready to perform, which may or may not have helped me, but would've guaranteed me a long recovery and allot of pain.
That's when I found Dr. Klapper. He evaluated my condition, felt I had a good case of arthritis setting in, among other things, and that I'd be a candidate for arthroscopic surgery to clean up the hip joint, and relieve the pain further. But before he'd agree to that he insisted that I go to PT, and purchase his very inexpensive book to see how much it would help heal the hip in a non-invasive manner.
With no exaggeration, by the 3rd time I'd gone through what I thought were the most benign, SIMPLE land exercises I started to regain stability in my hip which had been killing me with every step, kept me close to home, stopped me from venturing too far from the car, and worrying me for months on end.
It's been 5 months of work outs now and I'm getting more, and more back to normal after every workout. Though I will still have the scope surgery performed, I can't praise this book enough on how it helped me regain mobility, strength, and brought back my confidence. If you have a hip problem, BUY THIS BOOK, it gave me back a HUGE chunk of my normal active life style.

Hip And Knee Surgery: A Patient's Guide To Hip Replacement, Hip Resurfacing, Knee Replacement, And Knee Arthroscopy Review

This book is easy to read, both with the explanations and literally - I appreciated the large size (8.5" x 11") and font along with the great illustrations! It is the most up to date book I could find out there on this subject (2008), and it has chapters on newer topics like hip resurfacing and ceramic hips that I couldn't find in older books.
I have to say this book makes the prospect of facing hip or knee surgery less stressful. It helps a lot with the anxiety of just not knowing what to expect - even the detailed chapter on potential complications made it less scary by just explaining them and how often they occur (and why). I also found the appendices (like postoperative dental care and antibiotics, what to take to the hospital, etc.) and checklists helpful.
There do not appear to be very many books like this out there, particularly written by surgeons, and most of the books on joint replacement seem to be by patients or family members who have had the surgery - which is great, but only explains one person's/family's experience. I suppose one reason may be as the author says in his introduction; there are many different techniques and methods, and he goes to lengths to explain how different surgeons may use different surgical approaches, rehab recommendations, etc. It is written in a conversational style and uses terrific illustrations to explain things clearly.
It addresses many of the concerns I had, especially with some topics that just don't seem to come up in the doctor's office (e.g., sex after hip replacement). I felt much more educated and comfortable after reading it (twice!), and I was better able to ask good questions about things like dislocation and post-operative activities, ceramics, metal on metal hips, etc.
Although the title is Hip and Knee Surgery, in all honesty I think many patients not yet facing surgery would find it helpful, as it has a great deal of information on nonoperative options (like the gel injections for knees) and preventative measures for hips and knees as well.

I bought this book hoping to help avoid hip surgery. This is much more a manual for post operative recovery than anything about healing pre-surgery. The book is made wider in scope by doing exactly what the title does. That is, explaining all about post operative recovery and then just adding the words "and injury" to a sentence here and there.

Studies show that patients who contribute to their own treatment and recovery fare better in rehabilitation.Tailoring the concept for those suffering from joint pain, orthopedic psychologist Kate O'Shea draws from her patients and her own congenital hip orblems (she has four major surgeries by the time she was thirteen) to describe a program for caring for the emotional and physical body while healing joint pain or after surgery. Healing Hip, Joint and Knee Pain offers exercises, breathing techniques, visualization and writing suggestions for becoming aware emotionally and for enhancing awareness of the healing joint. Drawing from Rosen work, Feldenkrais, Eutony, and orthopedic psychologym O'Shea provides the reader with inviting methods to hasten healing.

I discovered Dr. Grelsamer's books last fall after undergoing an unnecessary knee arthroscopy that caused more pain and problems than before. If I had read Dr. Grelsamer's advice earlier, I could have avoided six months of trauma, but even so, Dr. Grelsamer's straightforward guidance and treatment suggestions have been critical to my present well-being. Characteristically candid and entertaining, Dr. Grelsamer explains in detail all the information readers need to know to make sensible decisions about hip and knee replacement surgery. He challenges routine testing techniques that contribute to diagnoses which are often misleading, and explains which controversial breakthroughs are safe and reliable, such as mini-incision surgeries and the latest implants. This book is a MUST READ for all active adults and teens. Thank you, Dr. Grelsamer, for giving us the tools and knowledge to be informed consumers!
