Small Dolls of the 40s & 50s: Identification & Value Guide Review

Small Dolls of the 40s and 50s: Identification and Value Guide
Average Reviews:

As a longtime doll collector, I have often found 8-inch hard plastic dolls that I could not identify. Some of the dolls were even mint with original clothes. I always passed them by thinking that I would never be able to learn about the companies that made them. This "Small Dolls" book will go a long way to answer these kinds of questions. The author has written a great book with lots of excellent illustrations, which includes pictures and information of the more well-known dolls like Ginny, Ginger and Muffie. In addition, dolls are pictured from over 50 other doll companies, including Norma Originals, Unique, Virga, Carlson Manufacturing and many more. For collectors who like small dolls, especially those from the 1950s, this book is a must.

Almost 1,000 color photos, catalog pages, brochures, and vintage advertisements. This unprecented volume includes special sections devoted to toddler dolls, baby dolls, British dolls, advertising dolls, 'dress me' sewing dolls, and accessories. You'll learn the scoop on why so many of the small dolls look alike, why they were unmarked, and who owned whom in the tangled web of small dolls. Although it concentrates on the smallest dolls up to 9 inch of the 1940s and 1950s, the book also provides examples from the 1960s.288 pages. AUTHORBIO: Carol Stover is a doll authority who has co-authored two editions of Vogue Dolls with Judith Izen. She is also the author of Small Dolls of the 40s & 50s and has co-authored the eighth edition of Doll Values, Antique to Modern, with Barbara DeFeo. REVIEW: This book is valuable for its coverage of not only major companies, including Vogue Dolls, but also lesser-known companies. Forty-five American brands and five British makers are discussed in separate chapters, along with some miscellaneous groupings of dolls, plus chapters on advertising dolls and sewing sets. The dolls are described carefully, with marketing histories where available, in businesslike prose.

Yoga (101 Essential Tips) Review

Yoga (101 Essential Tips)
Average Reviews:

I was introduced to Sivananda Yoga in May 06 by my Shiatsu masseuse. I had several sessions of Shiatsu for back pain relief. However, a few days after the session the pain returned. My masseuse told me that if I practiced Sivananda Yoga once a day it would significantly reduce my back pain. She covered the basic asanas with me in two sessions. I ordered "The Sivananda Companion to Yoga..." and "Yoga 101 Essential Tips". I began performing the asanas on my own using both books as my guide. They are easy to read and fully explain the asanas.
"The Sivananda Companion to Yoga..." is more detailed. It gives a great (but brief) history of Yoga along with breathing, meditation, diet info. and health benefits (in detail using photos). My favorite part of this book is the chart for 30m or 90m sessions and also additional asanas as my routine advances. I use this book when I have more time to experiment with new asanas or as a reference.
"Yoga 101 Essential Tips" covers every basic asana and briefly touchs on diet, meditation, etc. I use this book daily because it covers a complete session.
I am a newby at yoga and highly recommend both books. As a result of doing yoga from them for approximately 3-4 weeks my body feels great, my back pain is relieved and I have either toned or lost inches around the abdomen and thighs which has always been difficult for me. My sugar cravings have decreased (once a daily user of Coca Cola and Haribo Gummies) and coffee is not desired. I am also working on a better diet from recommendations in the book.
Good Luck!

Sports Medicine Bible : Prevent, Detect, and Treat Your Sports Injuries Through the Latest Medical Techniques Review

Sports Medicine Bible : Prevent, Detect, and Treat Your Sports Injuries Through the Latest Medical Techniques

If you are going to exercise, there's a good possibility that you will at some point have to deal with an injury. This book will save you a lot of time and frustration if you do get injured, and if you read it and follow it's advice, you will probably be able to prevent injury in the first place.
When I developed bursitis in my hip (from running)I saw a General Practitoner, who basically told me to stop running. Then I saw an Orthopedic Specialist who acted as if I were wasting his time because he had patients with REAL problems. Then, I found this book, which taught me all I needed to know about the condition and treating it on my own. It describes the causes of injury and gives you techniques and exercises that actually HELP. I haven't had any problems with my hip for several years now, but I recently developed pain in my shoulder (rotator cuff tendinits) from weightlifting. I had been doing all the usual home treatment things, dreading the idea of going to a doctor who wouldn't help me. Then I remembered this book! I read about the various shoulder injuries and began doing some of the stretching and strengthening exercises the book describes, and within 2 days the condition began to improve.
I highly recommend this book to anyone who exercises. It has been a real godsend for me.

Out of the lifestyle revlutiion of the past quarter century has emerged a new kindof recreational athlete, oen more likely to pursue a physical activity that brings health benefits than to tackle a traditional "rough-and-tumble" sport. As a result, "overuse" or "chronic" injuries, such as "runner's knee" and "swimmer's shoulder", are increasingly replacing sprains, strains, and breaks as the badge of the weekend Warrior.
The sports medicine profession has responded to the rise in overuse injuries by placing greater emphasis on injury prevention, developing new diagnostic and treatment techniques, and promoting rehabilitation as an aid to full recovery. This is what Dr. Lyle J. Micheli, one of the nation's foremost sports medicine authorities, calls the "new sports medicine."
In The Sports Medicine Bible, Dr. Micheli responds to the need for more and better answers to the questions posed by recreational athletes desperate for sound medical advice that will help them return to their physical regimens as quickly as possible. He emphasizes strength and flexibility as the keys to injury prevention, encourages early motion rather than immobilization during the rehabilitation process, and recommends other proven techniques that are replacing the sports medicine techniques of past generations.
This book covers the whole spectrum of sports medicine, including special sections on nutrition, female-specific sports injuries, exercise and the elderly, structuring a workout, flexibility and strength, clothing and footwear, and proper equipment. Separate chapters examine causes and symptoms, diagnosis and treatment of injuries to the foot; ankle; lower leg; knee; thigh; hip, pelvis, and groin; back; shoulder; elbow; wrist; hand and finger; head and neck; and skin.
By following the guidance and guidelines embodied in The Sports Medicine Bible, the recreational athlete can heighten his or her fitness experience, while learning the most modern techniques for effectively managing sports injuries. Written in clear, straightforward language with hundreds of illustrations, The Sports Medicine Bible is destined to become an essential piece of equipment in every athlete's gym bag.

This book was wonderful for helping me get a better understanding of the muscles of the body. Being a new fitness trainer, it's really important to help my clients as much as possible. I also used another reference which was much easier to read then big anatomy and physiology textbooks. I highly recommend "Key Facts for Anatomy and Physiology" by Patrick Leonardi. This book gets to the point and explains the muscles, bones, nerves and blood supply of the body in reader-friendly language. Both books helped me very much to get a better understanding of the body.

Parkinson's Disease & Art of Moving Review

Parkinson's Disease and Art of Moving
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
My mother-in-law was diagnosed recently with Parkinson's. I immediately came to Amazon to print out some book info for her. I confess this was not my first choice, but boy was I wrong. She chose this, and when it arrived I sat down for a quick read before I forwarded it to her. John Argue's book developed out of years of work in the theatre as well as with people who have Parkinson's. He has set out the exercise program he devised in a clear progression, with easy-to-follow descriptions in words and illustrations. Argue does not take an authoritarian tone but reminds us gently of sensible points about exercise for body and mind together; he is inspiring, and -perhaps best of all- wryly amusing too. I wish we could clone John Argue and bring him to Australia. My m-i-l went straight to the index and found an exercise that helped her with her swallowing, and is now working her way through from the beginning. Not all of the exercises are imperative for her at this stage, but she knows she can use them to help her move through the rest of her life with grace and humour. Thanks to John Argue.

Human Anatomy for Artists: The Elements of Form Review

Human Anatomy for Artists: The Elements of Form
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is an extremely exhaustive book and well worth the price. As far as I know, there exists no more comprehensive book on how every muscle interconnects in the human body -- it is truly an encylopedia of the human anatomy.
A few things keep me from giving it a 5 star review.
1: Goldfinger's illustrations are fair, but not masterful, particularly those of the human face.
2: Strangely, there are almost no fully rendered full-body illustrations or even any fully rendered "body part" illustrations -- almost all the good sketches are of isolated body parts alone. For example, there isn't any fully rendered muscular illustration that encompasses both the upper arm AND the lower arm(!) There ARE full body illustrations, but only in a more schematical form.
3: There are no "application" illustrations of the anatomy in case studies such as bending, posing, flexing, etc. Most of the examples are in prone positions.
Granted, much of this information can be taken from any number of other anatomy books, particularly Richer's "Artistic Anatomy," which this book is largely based on and I also highly recommend.
Nevertheless, as a reference guide to the human body, this book has no peer. If you truly want to understand how the muscles of the body interconnect, there is no better alternative. This book is obviously a labour of love.

The power of the image of the nude--the expressivity of the flesh--has inspired artists from the beginning. An understanding of human form is essential for artists to be able to express themselves with the figure.Anatomy makes the figure.Human Anatomy for Artists:The Elements of Form is the definitive analytical work on the anatomy of the human figure. No longer will working artists have to search high and low to find the information they need.In this, the most up-to-date and fully illustrated guide available, Eliot Goldfinger--sculptor, illustrator, scientific model-maker, and lecturer on anatomy--presents a single, all-inclusive reference to human form, capturing everything artists need in one convenient volume. Five years in the making, and featuring hundreds of photos and illustrations, this guide offers more views of each bone and muscle than any other book ever published: every structure that creates or influences surface form is individually illustrated in clear, carefully lit photographs and meticulous drawings. Informed by the detailed study of both live models and cadavers, it includes numerous unique presentations of surface structures--such as fat pads, veins, and genitalia--and of some muscles never before photographed. In addition, numerous cross sections, made with reference to CT scans, magnetic resonance imaging, and cut cadavers, trace the forms of all body regions and individual muscles. Information on each structure is placed on facing pages for ease of reference, and the attractive two-color format uses red ink to direct readers rapidly to important points and areas. Finally, an invaluable chapter on the artistic development of basic forms shows in a series of sculptures the evolution of the figure, head, and hands from basic axes and volumes to more complex organic shapes. This feature helps place the details of anatomy within the overall context of the figure.Certain to become the standard reference in the field, Human Anatomy for Artists will be indispensable to artists and art students, as well as art historians. It will also be a useful aid for physical and dance therapists, athletes and their trainers, bodybuilders, and anyone concerned with the external form of the human body. With the renewed interest in figurative art today, this will be an especially welcome volume.

Pilates: Body in Motion Review

Pilates: Body in Motion
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
There are other good Pilates books out there. Brooke Siler's Pilates Body, in my opinion, raised the bar for all Pilates books- and so far few have come close. Jennifer Kries' Pilates Plus Method is VERY comprehensive and tells you more about muscle relationships and breathing patterns than you thought you needed to know, as well as quite a bit about yoga and dance. However, for the student who wants to learn Pilates (and not yoga or dance), this is the book to use.
Ungaro gives a brief description of the origins of Pilates (and hers is slightly more detailed than some of the other accounts) as well as an introduction to Pilates terminology and principles. READ THESE if you are just starting out. Also, better than other sources I have read, she explains why some movements are considered "Beginner" and some are "Advanced"- good information for anyone who has ever scratched their head when watching a video or following another manual.
Then to the body of the book. She first lays out the Introductory Program, a series of six or seven of the most basic Pilates movements done with modifications. Then the Beginner's Program, which is exactly the Introductory program only with more traditional form. For the Intermediate and Advanced programs, she uses guides which show all of the exercises in order. In addition to being a good quick reference to what sequence to use, it also gives the reader a sense for how each exercise should flow into another.
The exercises themselves are explained with photographs linking breathing to each "mini movement" and just enough text to explain what to do. The photographs in this book- as well as the pages themselves- are perfect. Color photographs in muted tones that make it easy to see what you're supposed to do without being distracting.
Ungaro also includes Circle and Wall exercises. These smaller, shorter routines can be incorporated into your day when you don't have time for a full mat workout, or added on to complement it. One drawback: she does not include the any of the Standing Sculpting Series (used with light weights). If you need a reference for this, see Siler's book. Otherwise, this is the perfect Pilates manual.

The Arthritis Handbook: Improve Your Health and Manage the Pain of Osteoarthritis (A DiaMedica Guide to Optimum Wellness) Review

The Arthritis Handbook: Improve Your Health and Manage the Pain of Osteoarthritis (A DiaMedica Guide to Optimum Wellness)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This book is inaccurately titled. Stedman's Medical Dictionary states arthritis is: "inflammation of a joint or a state characterized by inflammation of joints," but this book does not cover the majority of the over 120 types of arthritis that exist. This book only covers osteoarthritis, which the author states is the most common. If you have osteoarthritis and have not kept up to date with current complementary medicine then this is a good book for you. If you have osteoarthritis of the knee or hip, then it is excellent. The best part of this book is the author's clear explanations of how you can alter the course of this debilitating disease. There is some repetition of exercises due to the way the author chose to organize his material, providing recommendations for those with disease of the knee and hip. This book would benefit those formally diagnosed with osteoarthritis and those who have known injuries to joints that are likely to predispose them to developing osteoarthritis.

According to conventional wisdom, arthritis pain is an inevitable part of aging. Not so, says Dr. Grant Cooper in this practical, accessible guide. For those who do develop osteoarthritic conditions, this book offers a blend of commonsense advice, dietary info, targeted exercise, and tips on useful supplements. According to the author, sufferers can often entirely avoid the use of medication, injection therapy, and surgery - approaches that, when necessary, can be used as an opportunity to return to exercise and nutrition to slow the disease's progress. The book features easy, illustrated exercises, including aerobics and strength training, that can be done at home, at a gym, or under a trainer's or physical therapist's supervision. Nutritional and supplement strategies - including glucosamine and fish oil - are presented in detail, along with suggestions for ways to keep on track. Dr. Cooper not only explores each topic in depth but explains how it fits into an overall holistic treatment program.
