This book doesnt tell you anything you already know about losing weight and defining your abs, you have to already be thin for anything in the book to work otherwise you will just be building strong abs over a layer or fat if you are new to using an Ab ball then this might have something for you to read but otherwise i would look for another book

Get on the Ball: Develop a Strong, Lean and Toned Body with an Exercise Ball Review

Get on the Ball: Develop a Strong, Lean and Toned Body with an Exercise Ball
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I have a small but respectable collection of "stability ball" videos and books, but this resource is clearly my favorite.
Westlake's book is a sexy production with typically two pages devoted to each exercise. The book is divided into sections relating first to the rationale and method of developing your body through the use of an unstable surface, next a section on warming up (of course), then presentation of exercises mostly according to position of the exerciser with respect to the ball: seated on the ball, standing with the ball, supine (face-up) on the ball, abs on the ball, etc. In the margin of each of these pages is a vertical strip that lists trainer tips (tips a personal trainer would give), stretches associated with the particular exercise, and a word of caution in performing the exercise. The next section outlines stretching exercises. The book ends with -- and this is where I feel I've really gotten *my* money's worth - fifteen different training programs, including "all [a]round workouts," "core control" training, exercises for pregnant women, stretching routines, and anatomy-specific workouts, e.g. butt, abs, etc.
This book is my favorite because it presents a huge variety of challenging exercises (and I consider myself to be in very good physical condition). In addition, the production values are of very high quality. I love the arty graphics, everything from the attractive fonts to the bulleted lists of pointers, to the white-on-navy blue trainer tips in the margin. Most people will probably never notice the whimsical gray balls that loom large in the background, but I think it's a neat, modern touch that resonates with ball enthusiasts' sense that the ball is *fun*, not to mention an invaluable tool for attaining new heights of body awareness, suppleness, agility, tone, and core strength. This book is well conceived physically, as well: although it packs a whopping 184 pages of pictures and textual information, it *seems* small and it's easy to pack, at nearly square 6.5 inches x 6.75 inches (ca. 16.5 cm x 17 cm).
My only problem with this book is that the cool and plentiful duo-tone pictures often depict the exercise at only one point in the movement. Or if there *is* a second photo, it often depicts a more difficult variation. Personally, I would prefer photos depicting the range of motion at initial, final, and even mid positions. The reader must therefore rely on the text, where a picture would have packed a more communicative punch.
I thought I was at a training plateau with my ballwork until I got this book on a recent trip to New York from Brazil. The cover's subtitle is "Develop a strong core and a lean, toned body" and Westlake means it! Since I started using the book, I've experienced a significant jump core strength, which I've especially noticed while swimming. ...Overall, this book has been incredibly motivating for me. WHAT is presented here and HOW it is presented makes this book THE Bible of all ball resources. Anyone who owns or works out with a fitness ball should definitely own a copy of Westlake's _Get on the Ball_.

The Great Stretch Tubing Handbook Review

The Great Stretch Tubing Handbook
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I found out about this handbook from my aerobic instructor. We use the stretch tubing with most of the classes. I immediately searched at Borders bookstore. Couldn't find it. Went online and found and ordered it from Amazon.com. I ordered one for me (a gym junkie who needs a stretch tubing routine for rainy days) and for a friend who works out at home with his home gym. We both agree that the handbook is very useful.
The Great Stretch Tubing Handbook includes exercises that work each part of the body. If you want to maintain a toned figure the handbook is for you. It is not to be used for heavy "stretching".
First there are a dozen stretches listed and displayed by a model. Then the exercises for: chest, shoulders, rotator cuff, back, biceps, triceps, forearms, core, and legs.
The only equipment you will need is stretch tubing (or bands). The handbook explains how to make and use your door attachment.
Each exercise (and stretch) is demonstrated by a model. You don't have to guess about how the movement is executed.
Also, for those body-conscious folks, each exercise explains EXACTLY which muscles you'll work. Example: For the downward chest crossover: muscles worked = anterior deltoid, pectoralis major.
pros:
=low price
=great photos
=small enough to pack in a gym bag
=easy to follow step by step instructions
=general and specific descriptions of muscle groups being worked
cons:
=lots of instructions (for a newbie)
=too small for someone trying to follow along (posters are available)

This truly is a great little book. I've bought other books on medicine ball training but this one has the best photos (color) and simple, easy to follow directions. It seems to be written for both beginners and the more advanced, depending on the exercise chosen. I highly recommend this book to anyone looking to add medicine ball training to their routine.

Anatomy and Asana: Preventing Yoga Injuries Review

Anatomy and Asana: Preventing Yoga Injuries
Average Reviews:

As a yoga instructor, I am always looking for books to assist my growth as a teacher. Anatomy can be a challenging aspect of teaching yoga - until now. "Anatomy and Asana: Preventing Yoga Injuries" by Susi Hately Aldous is a very accessible anatomy book for yoga instructors and practitioners alike. Unlike other similar books, which tend to be dry, boring reading, this book is written in an easy to understand fashion with clear illustrations. I felt more comfortable with my understanding of anatomy and how it relates to yoga after reading this book. It will be a very useful companion to my other anatomy books - and most likely, it will be the main one I turn to.

Balance on the Ball Review

Balance on the Ball
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This book is great for working out on your own with the ball. It gives very clear directions, and even lets you know what muscle groups you are targeting so that you can really focus on getting the most out of each exercise. This is the best ball book that I have bought (I also have Pilates on the Ball, which is good but this one is better).

Click Here to see more reviews about: Balance on the Ball

Balance on the Ball combines the smooth, controlled movements of Pilates with the instability of a ball to provide a fun, challenging workout for people at all levels of fitness. Black-and-white photographs clearly illustrate over 100 exercises, focusing on core stabilization, muscle tone, and flexibility. Each exercise provides helpful tips for maintaining optimal form and alignment, modifications or advanced variations, and a list of muscle groups used. As the first book to integrate stability ball training with the Pilates method, Balance on the Ball explains how the principles of Pilates-breathing, concentration, centering, precision, control, movement flow and rhythm-are integral to exercising on the ball. The author emphasizes correct alignment and the quality of movement rather than the number of repetitions or speed at which they are performed. These essential concepts may be incorporated into the rest of your fitness routine, as well as into your daily life, for a greater sense of harmony and balance.

Bullet-Proof Abs: 2nd Edition of Beyond Crunches Review

Bullet-Proof Abs: 2nd Edition of Beyond Crunches

Before purchasing this book, I carefully considered the negative comments registered about it here on Amazon.com. The negative comments claim that it's an "infomercial marketing the Pavelizer.
Nonetheless, the positive statements finally won me over and I ordered it.
Now let's see how many pages are devoted to marketing. The body of the book (ending with part 5) totals 113 pages. The advertisements for his other books come after that 113 pages. Of that 113 pages, 8 pages are devoted to pictures and text that focus on the pavelizer. That's around seven percent of the book.
Keep in mind that, he does show you how to do the Janda situps without the machine but with assistance from a partner. The pavelizer is for those people who dont have a training partner. Fair enough.
Even if we skipped the Janda situps altogether, we would still be left with 80-85 pages of other exercises which do not rely on the pavelizer. Some of these exercises are very innovative and the ones I have tried so far are winners.
I do not have the background in physiology to argue one way or the other regarding Pavel's low opinions of crunches. But I am sick of crunches and dont want to do them anyway, so it's a moot question for me!
On the other hand, it is fair to say that such a short book should not be so expensive: $34.95 is too much for a book this short. I bought a used copy for about $20 bucks. The information in the book is worth 5 stars, but because of the expense, I lower the rating to 4 stars.

For beginners outside the fitness industry. I bought this book based on previous reviews so, hope this will set the record straight... To be honest, yes, there is a lot of pictures in this book... But many of them show improper form or misalignment. Note to the author: Scapulae retraction and protraction are inverted throughout the book which shows, poor knowledge of anatomy and kinesiology. I gave it one star because I like the variety of foam roller exercises. The rest is just same old and bad. I wish I could have browsed this book before buying it. It would have saved me time and money.

Pilates is a particularly safe and effective exercise system which aims to strengthen the body in a balanced way by specifically improving the function of the weaker muscle groups. Emphasis is placed on strengthening the muscles of the trunk so that support of the spine increases plus posture and shape improve. I have been to orthopedists, chiropractors, massage theerapists and accupuncturists over the years for an assortment of injuries.
After reading "Muscle Medicine" I have a new clarity on the cause of many of my past problems.
Most importantly, I now have a strategy for self treatment which should resolve my problems.
As a senior runner, this material is critical!
And, the best part are the sections on prevention. I am now in control!
I feel sorry for the medical practionioners in New Jersey- no more business!!

Pilates: Body in Motion Review

Pilates: Body in Motion
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
There are other good Pilates books out there. Brooke Siler's Pilates Body, in my opinion, raised the bar for all Pilates books- and so far few have come close. Jennifer Kries' Pilates Plus Method is VERY comprehensive and tells you more about muscle relationships and breathing patterns than you thought you needed to know, as well as quite a bit about yoga and dance. However, for the student who wants to learn Pilates (and not yoga or dance), this is the book to use.
Ungaro gives a brief description of the origins of Pilates (and hers is slightly more detailed than some of the other accounts) as well as an introduction to Pilates terminology and principles. READ THESE if you are just starting out. Also, better than other sources I have read, she explains why some movements are considered "Beginner" and some are "Advanced"- good information for anyone who has ever scratched their head when watching a video or following another manual.
Then to the body of the book. She first lays out the Introductory Program, a series of six or seven of the most basic Pilates movements done with modifications. Then the Beginner's Program, which is exactly the Introductory program only with more traditional form. For the Intermediate and Advanced programs, she uses guides which show all of the exercises in order. In addition to being a good quick reference to what sequence to use, it also gives the reader a sense for how each exercise should flow into another.
The exercises themselves are explained with photographs linking breathing to each "mini movement" and just enough text to explain what to do. The photographs in this book- as well as the pages themselves- are perfect. Color photographs in muted tones that make it easy to see what you're supposed to do without being distracting.
Ungaro also includes Circle and Wall exercises. These smaller, shorter routines can be incorporated into your day when you don't have time for a full mat workout, or added on to complement it. One drawback: she does not include the any of the Standing Sculpting Series (used with light weights). If you need a reference for this, see Siler's book. Otherwise, this is the perfect Pilates manual.

As hip and knee conditions continue to become more prevalent, so does the demand for a rapid and complete return to function in these lower-extremity joints. Pilates for Hip and Knee Syndromes and Arthroplasties provides foundational guidelines and protocols—with specific modifications—for the use of Pilates in increasing core strength, balance, and flexibility and restoring function and range of motion with pre- and postoperative knee and hip syndromes and arthroplasties. Written for Pilates instructors, manual therapists, personal trainers, and physicians, this text introduces Pilates as a safe fitness and rehabilitation tool for individuals with knee or hip conditions.

Developed over 90 years ago by Joseph H. Pilates, the Pilates method is a unique system of stretching and strengthening exercises that have been shown to tone muscles and improve posture, flexibility, range of motion, and balance. Low impact and completely adaptable according to specific syndromes or fitness level, Pilates exercises are well suited for use in pre- and postoperative exercise regimens, and Pilates mat exercises can be easily incorporated into home programs.

Pilates for Hip and Knee Syndromes and Arthroplasties begins with a review of the anatomy of the hip and knee, a discussion of the most common conditions, and an overview of nonoperative and operative treatments. Building this background information will help readers gain a better understanding of why certain exercises are applied at various points in the rehabilitation time line.

The next portion of the text is dedicated to specific Pilates techniques and mat exercises and includes baseline recommendations for range of motion and both pre- and postoperative modifications for the knee and hip. Reference tables outline classical Pilates mat exercises and place them in specific rehabilitation time lines from six weeks to three months, three months to six months, and beyond six months postoperative. More than 600 photos clearly demonstrate the exercises and feature detailed instructions for correct execution of the techniques. To assist with clients who have never performed Pilates exercises or are in the very early stages after surgery, pre-Pilates exercises are also presented to help build core strength and range of motion. Case scenarios and sample Pilates mat programs provide additional guidelines on the correct application of the exercises, while an exercise finder located in the front of the text quickly directs readers to the appropriate exercises for each postop time line.

As a bonus, a Web resource included with the text provides fully trained Pilates instructors with guidelines on using the Pilates equipment to develop programs for clients with hip or knee conditions. Instructors will learn what equipment is appropriate to incorporate at the optimal time for rehabilitation. In addition, a resource finder is included to assist readers in finding a qualified Pilates training program and a qualified Pilates instructor.
