Men's Health Total Body Workout Poster Book Review

Men's Health Total Body Workout Poster Book
Average Reviews:

The pictures and descriptions of the exercises are great, as are the exercise plans provided. The only negative I could find is that the posters seem to have random exercises on them. I was expecting a poster for triceps, a page for quads, a page for shoulders, etc... The book seems to be aimed more at short, effective, total-body workouts. This is cool, but if you are looking for posters to lead you through intensely precise exercises for particular body parts, there are a limited number of posters to that effect.

The Great Stretch Tubing Handbook Review

The Great Stretch Tubing Handbook
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I found out about this handbook from my aerobic instructor. We use the stretch tubing with most of the classes. I immediately searched at Borders bookstore. Couldn't find it. Went online and found and ordered it from Amazon.com. I ordered one for me (a gym junkie who needs a stretch tubing routine for rainy days) and for a friend who works out at home with his home gym. We both agree that the handbook is very useful.
The Great Stretch Tubing Handbook includes exercises that work each part of the body. If you want to maintain a toned figure the handbook is for you. It is not to be used for heavy "stretching".
First there are a dozen stretches listed and displayed by a model. Then the exercises for: chest, shoulders, rotator cuff, back, biceps, triceps, forearms, core, and legs.
The only equipment you will need is stretch tubing (or bands). The handbook explains how to make and use your door attachment.
Each exercise (and stretch) is demonstrated by a model. You don't have to guess about how the movement is executed.
Also, for those body-conscious folks, each exercise explains EXACTLY which muscles you'll work. Example: For the downward chest crossover: muscles worked = anterior deltoid, pectoralis major.
pros:
=low price
=great photos
=small enough to pack in a gym bag
=easy to follow step by step instructions
=general and specific descriptions of muscle groups being worked
cons:
=lots of instructions (for a newbie)
=too small for someone trying to follow along (posters are available)

Functional Anatomy for Sport and Exercise: Quick Reference Review

Functional Anatomy for Sport and Exercise: Quick Reference
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is an anatomy book with virtually no illustration, and none of the muscles. There is a text description of each joint and its movement, but unless you can easily visualize sentences such as "The primary movement is flexion-extension in the sagittal plane" then this book is probably not for you.
Though "sport and exercise" are in the title, there are no descriptions of multiple joint movements (e.g. military press, side kick, jumping). There are a total of thirteen illustrations; none of which describe muscle insertion or attachment nor joint movement. The "hot topics discussed in detail" are: 1. Tibial stress fractures in runners, 2. The use of foot orthotics in the prevention of injury, 3. Quantitative motion analysis in biomechanics, 4. Anterior cruciate ligament injury in athletes, and 5. Carpal tunnel syndrome in the workplace.
I would recommend "Anatomy of Movement" by Calais-Germaine instead for undergraduate and graduate studies in functional anatomy of the musculo-skeletal system.

Frank Zane: Mind, Body, Spirit Review

Frank Zane: Mind, Body, Spirit
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
There once was a bodybuilder named Zane,
Who was not only well muscled but also had a brain,
He studied meditation, Eastern Philosophy, and transformative psychology
But as much as he wanted to
His poetry was about as good as doggie poo...
Yes, folks, in this rather informative book by Frank Zane, you will not only get a glimpse into his soul, you'll also get a glimpse of what an absolutely horrible poet Frank Zane is.
I like Frank, I do. In fact, when I was really into bodybuilding, he was my hero. I liked him even more than Arnold because he wasn't just a big glob of muscle. He posessed an intelligence as well as an elegance and in my opinion, really raised the bar of modern bodybuilding. Unfortunately, ever since Zane retired in the mid 80s, the sport has, in my opinion, regressed to where mass is king and everything else, like symmetry, definition, and muscle shape are thrown by the wayside.
I also like Zane because he isn't afraid to express his intelligence. He is deeply into meditation and visualization. Some bodybuilders will never learn that it's not the body, but the mind that creates the most lasting gains. I have had to learn to leave my ego outside the gym, because if I'm just pushing huge poundages around, I'm inviting injury and I've already had surgery on my knee as well as my back and I kind of would like to stay out of the operating room for the rest of my stint here on this planet.
This book gives a full year of training routines that actually work and do not lead to burnout. Of course, you may like spending two hours a day in the gym, but I don't. Been there, done that. I'm 42 years old. I have a life. I know that I'm never going to be in the kind of shape I was when I was 23-25, but that's okay. So, what if my waist is now 34" instead of 28"? If I'm doing less weight than ever on my lifts? I feel good, I feel strong and I feel happy.
And isn't that the main thing?
Frank Zane beat Schwarzenegger once and made him cry,
Even though Zane's body weighed as much as Arnold's thigh.
He's now 63 and still looks awesome,
But Frank, please, no more poetry! Your poems are dumb!

Starting Strength: A Simple and Practical Guide for Coaching Beginners Review

Starting Strength: A Simple and Practical Guide for Coaching Beginners
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I am a physician and a trainer. I came from a middle distance running background. After medical school I continued to run but of course never got to the point where my fitness was at the level that it was when I was competing in college. I started adding strength training using mainly Olympic Weightlifting. While I was certainly gaining strength, it was not happening as fast as I would have liked. About 5 months ago I purchased Starting Strength. The book is very detailed, but unlike most books on training, it does not put you to sleep. It holds your interest through the plain language, and often funny, explanations of what should be done and also why it should be done.
I used what I learned in the book to modify my training, and I saw results fast. Lifts such as the Deadlift that had been giving me problems based on the form training I got from other sources improved quickly. My leg strength improved rapidly as I began squatting correctly. I did not focus on the bench press as much as the other lifts, but my strength there improved as well. Exercises that were not directly related to the training found in the book, such as pull-ups, also had big improvements. One of the biggest improvements to my performance was my improved running speed. Although I was spending less and less time running, and more time on strength, both my distance running and my sprinting have improved dramatically. The explosive speed that I had back in college has returned. It is amazing what doubling your leg and back strength can do for your overall fitness. I am in the best shape of my life.
I have also used what I learned extensively when I train other people. I have yet to come across a problem with form that is not addressed in the book along with a method of fixing it. I am also able to tell my clients why they should do something so that they understand the importance and will remember it. By using the cues that I learned in the book, I am able to see someone on the far side of the gym doing something that could be unsafe and correct it before there is an injury. I can't express enough how much reading the book has improved my confidence in my ability to train strength movements. So far I have not been at a loss at how to correct a problem. There is always a drill available that can be used to effectively address an issue. This book also increased my appreciation for the slow lifts and encouraged me to emphasize them more when I train other people. The short and long term results have been fantastic. Every day I fix someone's form on a squat or deadlift and have people say things like: "It is so much easier this way. Is it allowed?"
I would strongly recommend this book to anyone who trains any type of athlete, including distance events, and to anyone who is interested in improving their athletic abilities or even just their basic functionality. It is true when the authors say, "Physical strength is the most important thing in life."

Bullet-Proof Abs: 2nd Edition of Beyond Crunches Review

Bullet-Proof Abs: 2nd Edition of Beyond Crunches

Before purchasing this book, I carefully considered the negative comments registered about it here on Amazon.com. The negative comments claim that it's an "infomercial marketing the Pavelizer.
Nonetheless, the positive statements finally won me over and I ordered it.
Now let's see how many pages are devoted to marketing. The body of the book (ending with part 5) totals 113 pages. The advertisements for his other books come after that 113 pages. Of that 113 pages, 8 pages are devoted to pictures and text that focus on the pavelizer. That's around seven percent of the book.
Keep in mind that, he does show you how to do the Janda situps without the machine but with assistance from a partner. The pavelizer is for those people who dont have a training partner. Fair enough.
Even if we skipped the Janda situps altogether, we would still be left with 80-85 pages of other exercises which do not rely on the pavelizer. Some of these exercises are very innovative and the ones I have tried so far are winners.
I do not have the background in physiology to argue one way or the other regarding Pavel's low opinions of crunches. But I am sick of crunches and dont want to do them anyway, so it's a moot question for me!
On the other hand, it is fair to say that such a short book should not be so expensive: $34.95 is too much for a book this short. I bought a used copy for about $20 bucks. The information in the book is worth 5 stars, but because of the expense, I lower the rating to 4 stars.

Athletic Abs Review

Athletic Abs
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is a great training book for abs. Seabourne and Cole have compiled a comprehensive series of core exercises while simultaneously delivering a witty banter to provide a workout philosophy that encompasses the exercises. The focus is not on a wrote routine of 1000 crunches, 100 leg lifts, etc. Rather, the authors tell you to focus your mind on the muscle group you're working so you complete each repetition with perfect form and maximum benefit.
I have a bad lower back and found most of the exercises did not stress that area. Some did, especially the leg lifts, but as my core strength increased, I found I was able to incorporate those exercises successfully into my routine.
Cons: I also have reservations about the taiji exercises they included in the book (monkey creeps back, etc.), not because they're not useful, but because it's really hard to perform them correctly without someone observing your form and correcting your movements. I think if you've never done the exercises before, you would be hard pressed to perform them correctly and beneficially from the description and few photos in the book.
The lack of "many" photos is my biggest annoyance. I'd call it constructive criticism rather than a complaint. I found myself lost in slightly vague descriptions on a couple exercises. A photo of beginning, middle, and end positions would clear up any confusion.
Overall: I thought the book had great ab exercises and a good training philosophy. I felt results, especially in the upper abs, after about two weeks. Two or so months later, I find my balance is better. I definitely recommend the book.

Teach Yourself Visually Weight Training Review

Teach Yourself Visually Weight Training
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I cross country ski race and have been lifting weights for years without any instruction - I've just learned by watching others and seeing pictures in some of the XC ski racing books I've purchased over the years. But I always knew I was missing something: proper form. I'd looked at some of the body building books, but their focus on massive muscle building was not for me - I want fast, small muscles. Excessive bulk just makes it harder to climb hills in a race!
It was with great pleasure that I stumbled on to "Teach Yourself Visual: Weight Training." From my perspective, there are several major benefits to this book:
First, the book has sections for weight machines, free weights, exercise balls, and stretch tubes. I've used all in my training, and it's really valuable to have examples of each in one book. Obviously, the book can't show you every machine out there, but it does provide hints on how you can utilize other equipment.
Second, the book provides clear examples of what to do and - more importantly - what not to do. I found out after all these years that you really need to tighten your abs when you lift. I found that some of the back problems I had been experiencing disapeared as soon as I followed that tip. That simple hint alone was worth the cost of the book.
Third, it clearly shows what muscles are being exercised and tells you ways to make the various exercise easier or harder to fit your conditioning level.
For people who may feel a little imtimidated by books showing muscle-bound, high testosterone men and women, this book is very non-threatening. It provides simple, straight-forward examples using people who look "normal."
There's lots of other info that's useful, too.
Overall: HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!

Kettlebell Training for Athletes: Develop Explosive Power and Strength for Martial Arts, Football, Basketball, and Other Sports, pb Review

Kettlebell Training for Athletes: Develop Explosive Power and Strength for Martial Arts, Football, Basketball, and Other Sports, pb
Average Reviews:

This review is for the competitive athlete.
As a current medical student, former college football player and continuing student of athletic training I do not recommend this book to anybody serious about training for a sport. This book's first half has a very basic description of kettlebell exercises that any certified kettlebell trainer could give you. The second half has a prescription of workouts for various sports. They are generic and not very catered (e.g. same basic exercises except for football its 5 reps and basketball its 10 reps) to the varying demands of each sport. There aren't to my knowledge actually any good sport specific kettlebell books for competitive team sport athletes at this time. Kettlebell training is too new in the US, professional teams are starting to incorporate kettlebell training into their workouts but they are still experimenting with regimens. Reading the author's story about himself in the introduction gives no reason why he should be trusted as someone who can give sound advice for exercise routines for athletes of the various sports he writes about.
As a basic book for a novice to kettlbells that wants to get more "toned" I would give this 3 stars.

LOTS of photos. Probably one of the best basic books. Most of the exercises can be found elsewhere, but the photos make it very clear what to do. Let me start off by saying that this book is available for free online, which is where I have read it, and I intend to buy it so that I have a reference copy. (I almost appreciate it being available free enough to buy it just because I support that).
I have recently joined a health club, and really wanted to try weight training. I had been feeling very intimidated, and this book has pretty much fixed that. I'm the type of person who likes to have a lot of information and think things through thoroughly, especially when I am a little nervous about them. All the background information about the different types of training and exercises really helped me to feel comfortable, though I can see how it might not seem relevant to those who have already been training for a while, or who are not the information junkies that I am.
The sample training plans and the descriptions and images of each exercise were probably the most helpful part of this book. I was able to read it, practice some of the movements I wasn't sure about at home without weight, and then hit the gym. I'm completely a beginner, and the level of information in this book was just what I was looking for to get me started since I can't really afford to hire a trainer.

Arnold's Bodybuilding for Men Review

Arnold's Bodybuilding for Men
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The information presented in the book is no-frills weight training and practical advice. Perhaps that is why some people don't like it. They are usually the ones who are taken in by the allure of protein shakes, supplements of dubious value, and exotic weight training routines. It is unfortunate that Arnold, like most bodybuilders, got his huge gains from steroids. He is clear, however that his massive gains took many years to achieve. People still believe they can go from flab to male model muscle in 12 weeks or 6 months. Muscle takes work, time, and dedication, more than most people are willing to devote. Arnold's dietary advice is practical and no-nonsense. He deflates the standard ideas of high protein diets and vitamin supplements as a way to speed muscle gains. His recommendations are pretty standard, lots of fruits & veggies, small amounts of meat, avoid heavily processed foods. Not a very marketable point of view but at least a logical one. His blurbs about daily nutrition requirements were most likely lifted straight from the FDA, but that info comes from scientists, so its better information than what you read in muscle magazines.
The pictures are of course dated. Nobody wears calf socks and skimpy shorts with white piping anymore, and the models are like normal folks, hairy, balding, shaped funny. Today we are so used to shaved, tanned and sculpted models in magazines and books it is somewhat disconcerting to read this older tome.
His routines are brutal, so don't expect to be able do them completely. Mutiple sets are at the core of his training regimen. I tend to do only 2-3 sets per muscle group, but that is what I am comfortable with. Vary the routines to your liking and ability, because not everybody can keep up with Arnie...

I bought this book over a year ago and have read and followed it ever since, and right now I'm in the best shape of my life so far. I believe I'm in a good position to write a review for it. What I like about the book is that:
- It describes a large number of exercises in great detail (along with "make it easier" and "- harder" versions)
- It included traditional as well as newer exercises
- Useful for beginners as well as advanced lifters
- Includes topics like nutrition, cardio-workouts, sports specific fitness etc. in reasonable details
- The book doesn't make any unrealistic promises. (The results you achieve depend on the efforts you put in; a book can only guide you along the path)
- Gives injury prevention tips
- Makes an excellent reference guide
- Although the title says "Men's health", it can be used by women too (My wife often looks up exercises from it)
- Offers advice based on science-backed wisdom
- Useful if you want to do strength/weight training (as opposed to ONLY bodybuilding)
- Doesn't promote any brand-named products
This book helped me a lot when I was a total beginner and I still look it up when I feel like changing my routine or to check if my form is correct. Although I have used other fitness books, this book remains the backbone of my lifting plan. Over all, I'll highly recommend this book if you are serious about fitness and weight-training, even if you are a beginner.
