I love the photos included in the book that shows the various techniques and exercises for each part of the stomach and glutes. The Author's explicit, easy-to-understand instructions are accompanied by clear photographs that will help you check your form as he focuses on the specific aspects of alignment, muscle control, and breathing throughout the workout-keys to achieving the maximum benefit from each exercise.
Plus it offers to let the reader start slowly for beginners or choose exercises that work all aspects of your stomach for those who have been working out for years. You don't have to start reading from the beginning. It only takes me about 15-20 minutes a day to do a workout at home. With many options to choose from, these workouts are fun.

He also share important tips for improving your diet without completely giving up the foods you love. Unlike other restrictive diet plans- this program provides you with smart uses of foods and "swap out" certain food groups for lighter, healthier foods to stop the bloating and swelling that occurs. There are good tips about what to eat and why with a good common sense and straight forward apporach you can flatten your stomach and make your stomach stronger.

A very good addition to whatever workout program you are doing if you need some help for just another view on eating as part of getting and staying in shape. Highly recommended to anyone.

I'm finally through with doing large numbers of crunches in an effort
to improve my abs - slower is better, and changing things up is the
key. You can use this book to suit your needs: you can put the DVD in
and go to work immediately to get one of four abs workouts, including
a short warmup session, in the advertised 15 minutes. If you want to
dig a little deeper you can use the book to learn about the specific
muscles, read the FAQs, and get a fold-out overview of the sequence of
exercises for each workout. If you're uncertain of the correct
procedures, you can also get a clear, detailed explanation of each
exercise and it's purpose. I like to rotate the workouts on a daily or
weekly basis, so my abs are constantly challenged.

Athletic Abs Review

This is a great training book for abs. Seabourne and Cole have compiled a comprehensive series of core exercises while simultaneously delivering a witty banter to provide a workout philosophy that encompasses the exercises. The focus is not on a wrote routine of 1000 crunches, 100 leg lifts, etc. Rather, the authors tell you to focus your mind on the muscle group you're working so you complete each repetition with perfect form and maximum benefit.
I have a bad lower back and found most of the exercises did not stress that area. Some did, especially the leg lifts, but as my core strength increased, I found I was able to incorporate those exercises successfully into my routine.
Cons: I also have reservations about the taiji exercises they included in the book (monkey creeps back, etc.), not because they're not useful, but because it's really hard to perform them correctly without someone observing your form and correcting your movements. I think if you've never done the exercises before, you would be hard pressed to perform them correctly and beneficially from the description and few photos in the book.
The lack of "many" photos is my biggest annoyance. I'd call it constructive criticism rather than a complaint. I found myself lost in slightly vague descriptions on a couple exercises. A photo of beginning, middle, and end positions would clear up any confusion.
Overall: I thought the book had great ab exercises and a good training philosophy. I felt results, especially in the upper abs, after about two weeks. Two or so months later, I find my balance is better. I definitely recommend the book.

I am a personal trainer (in training), and have built up quite the library of fitness books. I have tons of classics, from the Body for Life series to the Body Sculpting Bible to Sound Mind, Sound Body, and after a while, such books get repetitive. It is common knowledge that all training books have to cover all the same principles - anatomy, physiology, nutrition, relaxation, goal-setting - but this book is the only one that has done it in a way that caught my attention and did not put me to sleep!
Of course, I love reading about fitness and nutrition, but I have read about it so many times from so many books/magazines I was afraid I was in for a huge bore - a book that would "tell" clients what to do, and insist that their way was "the" way.
Kurt Brungart managed to relay all necessary information about muscle anatomy, training, nutrition, pregnancy training, goal-setting and relaxation in a wonderful, delightful way that truly talks to you, not down at you.
The book is full of wonderful photographs with the most amazing models, and has the most comprehensive list of abdominal workouts and routines (from yoga, pilates, youth, teen and sport training routines) that I have ever seen - and trust me, I have seen many. I thought I had seen everything!
Kurt doesn't forget that ab training alone is nothing - he includes a progressive total body weight training, stretching and cardio routine that, when put together with the ab system, is the best, safest, and most comprehensive nine-week program I have ever encountered.
Despite it's title, it is a *complete* book in every sense of the word, and is very fun and easy to read, without missing any unnecessary information. Kurt has taught me important things like, "it is never to early or late to become a philosopher (when it comes to creating YOUR OWN food philosophy)", self-talk for a great relationship with your body, and the best goal-setting techniques. He also helps you discover your personality and incorporates it into your "exercise essence" so that it is easier for you to stick to a lifelong fitness regime.
He does not diss Atkins or the Zone, or any other diet guru. He tells you what his eating philosophy is (try to's NOT dont's), but tells you that whatever works for you, is what you should do. He does not force you to keep a workout log, for he acknowledges that certain people take to them and some don't. And of course, no insistent calorie counting, or rough food guidelines.
The whole system is progressive, but not only for beginners. Whether you have never worked out in your life, or if you're a figure competitor, you will love this book. It makes it practically impossible to not enjoy fitness and not make it a part of your life - if not your whole life! :)
Minimal equipment required: the ab workouts require nothing really, unless you've already got a swiss ball or body bar and want to try his optional ball/bar routines. Total Body workout requires dumbbells only - you don't even need a bench. Don't be fooled by the total body's lack of equipment though - it is tough, if you do it the way he advises! They're basically the "meat and potatoes" of all weight training workouts and never fail.
By the way, don't worry - he doesn't write the pregnancy chapter himself. A female doctor writes it. :)
I hope to become a trainer like him one day. His writing style and philosphies are universally friendly and the best I've ever experienced.
Buy this book. It is worth every single dollar and more, I promise!

The Complete Book of Butt and Legs Review

The Complete Book of Butt and Legs

The Brungardt series of "Complete" Exercises finally gets around to covering lower body. It's nice to see a reference book that focuses on the most essential piece of a well-planned workout.
Legs (including Hamstrings, quads, and calves) are the thrust of this guide, and Brungardt certainly knows how to put together an excellent leg program, whether you are a novice or a pro. The Brungardt strategy is a sound 1-2-3 elevated program, guiding the reader from basic leg workouts up through some tough variations on the master of all weightlifting moves, the squat. The book takes a lot of time explaining the value of proper form in leg routines, which is essential for anyone looking to maintain a healthy back. Brungardt also spends a good deal of time explaining the importance of diet and cardio exercise to develope and tone some awesome legs.
The section on glute building is rather basic, but fits well with the material as most leg exercises involve the glutes, when done properly. Some individual focus on hyperextensions, among other exercises, give the reader some good tools if they want to add more of a glute building routine to their program.
I have found all of the Brungardts books to be a valuable guide for enforcing proper form, and getting some solid motivational advice (they always stress the importance of bringing the nind into the exercise, which is overlooked in most of today's exercise manuals). And it is nice to see legs get a book all their own - if you are like me, and know how valuable a good leg routine is to your workout, you'll appreciate the advice dispensed in this book. Of course, most gym rats won't be interested in a book that ignores the "pecs and guns" mentality that is so prevalent today in the gym. That's a shame, because this book is a great reminder of how lower body affects, and helps build a solid upper body as well

The Complete Book of Abs: Revised and Expanded Edition Review

The Complete Book of Abs: Revised and Expanded Edition

I purchased about 10 books from Amazon on abs in order to compare them. This one has quite a bit of information, good lay-out and organization, and is well-written for this type of book. My conclusions on how it compares with the other books follow...
If You Want to Trim Your Waistline: You can't trim your waistline without losing fat, and you can't lose fat around your waist without losing it everywhere (focusing on a muscle group like the abdominal muscles doesn't burn fat in that location, just a little bit of fat from everywhere on the body). So, if you want to trim your waistline, skip the ab workout books and go with a good, proven overall weight loss and fitness book like Bill Phillips' Body for Life. The Abs Diet is a similar program, but like all the Men's Health publications, it advertises a 6-week transformation, which is just a little unrealistic. Plan on more like 12-24 weeks to see really noticeable changes if you are fat.
If You Want Sculpted Six-Pack Abs: If you are overweight at all, see above--you can't get a six pack while you're overweight, and you can't lose abdominal fat by doing an ab workout, so go for overall fitness. However, if you are already lean, see below.
If You Want to Strengthen or Build Your Ab Muscles: If you're trying to improve for work, play, or rehab, you might consider the following books: The Body Sculpting Bible for Abs Deluxe DVD Edition contains decently up-to-date information and tells you exactly what to do and when to do it, based on a six-week fitness course. If you're looking for a similar book with more information, you can choose from The Complete Book of Abs or The Complete Book of Core Training. The Complete Book of Abs (1998) is a little out of date in terms of its dietary/nutritional recommendations, but it focuses more on exercises that develop the external abdominal muscles (the ones you see in a six-pack), including lots of variations on leg lifts, bicycle motion, and sit-ups. It will also give you more resources for creating your own program, and, if that's what you want to do, go with this one instead of The Body Sculpting Bible. The Complete Book of Core Training (2006) focuses more on the functional body core, including internal abdominal muscles, legs, etc., and includes more trendy exercises using medicine balls, exercise balls, yoga, etc. A different sort of book is Stronger Abs and Back (1997), which was written before the current fad of selling "core training," but contains the elements of core training because it gives good functional sports-focused advice. Its dietary recommendations are out of date, but it recommends a 24-week workout plan, which is much more realistic than the 6-week plans advocated by many of the other books.
If You Have Back Pain: See your doctor, and if he prescribes abdominal/core strengthening, see above.
My one-book recommendation: Body for Life.
My two-book recommendation: Body for Life + Stronger Abs and Back.
My three-book recommendation: Body for Life + Stronger Abs and Back + The Complete Book of Abs.
My four-book recommendation: Body for Life + Stronger Abs and Back + The Complete Book of Abs + The Abs Diet.
Hope this helps!!
