Functional Anatomy for Sport and Exercise: Quick Reference Review

Functional Anatomy for Sport and Exercise: Quick Reference

This is an anatomy book with virtually no illustration, and none of the muscles. There is a text description of each joint and its movement, but unless you can easily visualize sentences such as "The primary movement is flexion-extension in the sagittal plane" then this book is probably not for you.
Though "sport and exercise" are in the title, there are no descriptions of multiple joint movements (e.g. military press, side kick, jumping). There are a total of thirteen illustrations; none of which describe muscle insertion or attachment nor joint movement. The "hot topics discussed in detail" are: 1. Tibial stress fractures in runners, 2. The use of foot orthotics in the prevention of injury, 3. Quantitative motion analysis in biomechanics, 4. Anterior cruciate ligament injury in athletes, and 5. Carpal tunnel syndrome in the workplace.
I would recommend "Anatomy of Movement" by Calais-Germaine instead for undergraduate and graduate studies in functional anatomy of the musculo-skeletal system.

Stability, Sport, and Performance Movement: Great Technique Without Injury Review

Stability, Sport, and Performance Movement: Great Technique Without Injury

As a sports medicine focused chiropractor, I eagerly awaited the arrival of this book. Ms. Elphinston does an exemplary job of teasing out and explaining thoroughly the most common movement dysfunctions that afflict athletes. Much of this info can also be generalized to the desk jockeys that find it difficult to get up and down stairs as those movement disturbances affect daily life as well.
Often, books of this type focus on the standard analysis and prescriptions that have become rote and somewhat ineffective in manual therapy and sports med environs. These well-worn remedies often lead athletes searching for a bit more. A typical example might be the observation that distance runners often suffer from tightness in the ITB. A "cure" is often offered as foam rolling, and/or regular manipulation. While this type of treatment can be helpful, in essence it is only so much manual aspirin. Ms. Elphinston delves deeper, encouraging the engaged athlete and the heads up clinician to get to the root with thorough analysis. She then follows with detailed exercise instructions to help work the athlete towards a sustainable and more functional solution.
Well cited, and dense enough to satisfy clinicians, I suspect that it will overshoot the understanding of all but the most saavy athletes. I would also highly encourage the author to follow up with a DVD to better illustrate the exercises. While the included exercises are well described, a 2D explanation pales before the nuances that can be elicited from 3D movement examples. These are not shortfalls though, and are only offered as ways to make upcoming editions that much better. Great work Ms. Elphinston and thanks for your contribution!!

Your Ultimate Pilates Body® Challenge: At the Gym, on the Mat, and on the Move Review

Your Ultimate Pilates Body® Challenge: At the Gym, on the Mat, and on the Move

This is the long-awaited follow-up to Brooke Siler's first manual on Pilates, The Pilates Body. Her first book was my own introduction to Pilates about 5 years ago, and I still recommend it as the starting point for those brand-new to Pilates. However, for those familiar with Pilates and looking integrate its principles into their lives as a whole, I highly recommend Your Ultimate Pilates Body Challenge, a perfect sequel.
Siler does not spend as much time delving into the background and basic tenets of Pilates as she did in her previous work. However, she still provides an excellent foundation by reviewing key points about the Pilates powerhouse, posture, and Pilates-style breathing. Furthermore, as it did in her first book, Siler's enthusiasm for the Pilates method shines through on each and every page. She is unfailingly encouraging, with a clear, down-to-eath writing style. Siler is also gifted in her ability to provide metaphors, and the amazing photos and illustrations which accompany her text provide further clarification.
Siler offers several methods for expanding your Pilates practice in this book. The first is by taking it to the gym: she describes a program which utilizes common gym equipment for a cardio workout that integrates Pilates techniques. Next she outlines a similar program using home-based equipment such as free weights and bands. In response to demands from her fans, she has also created several programs based on Pilates matwork. She introduces the "Tantalizing Ten," ten Pilates exercises which provide a foundation for the four other programs, including "Adding Abs," "Lean Lower Body," "Perfecting Posture," and "Finding Flexibility."
The final two chapters address how to integrate Pilates into other activities. The first, called the "Invisible Workout," details the use of Pilates principles in simple, everyday activities, from driving your car to carrying your children to doing housework. In the last chapter, Siler links Pilates to sports activities, choosing a somewhat odd selection of Sports to highlight use of Pilates techniques: golf, tennis, downhill skiing, and snowboarding.
Although I wouldn't suggest this book as someone's first introduction to Pilates, those with some experience with the Pilates method are likely to find this book a valuable addition to their Pilates library.

Ray Long is our new best friend. every book that has been published has been excellent. This new series, I reference this as really the new format..miss the longer version as You could sit on the mat and the book would stay open..ohwell. Gives pictures of what the body looks like if your just starting out as well as the final pose as it should be. For a teacher it is great information, to see someone working on the hip opener and better ways to correct a posture. I'll buy every book he comes out with, just the information I've been looking for.

Pilates Anatomy Review

Pilates Anatomy

I love anatomy books --- especially the ones that tell me what muscles I work doing certain exercises or movements. To the already impressive lineup of anatomy books put out by this exceptional fitness publisher is now added Pilates Anatomy by Rel Isacowitz and Karen Clippinger.
Pilates Anatomy presents a visual perspective on correct alignment, posture, and movements. You'll get an inside view of your workout. It includes 213 illustrations with 96 in full-color and step-by-step instructions for 46 of the most effective mat exercises for building a stronger, more articulate body.
The contents include:
Chapter 1. Six Key Principles of Pilates
Chapter 2. Spine, Core, and Body Alignment
Chapter 3. Muscles, Movement Analysis, and Mat Work
Chapter 4. Foundation for a Mat Session
Chapter 5. Abdominal Work for Movement and Stabilization
Chapter 6. Fine Articulation for a Flexible Spine
Chapter 7. Bridging for a Functional Spine
Chapter 8. Side Exercises for an Effective Core
Chapter 9. Extensions for a Strong Back
Chapter 10. Customizing Your Pilates Program
The book has great instructions on how to do each exercise and what muscles are being worked. Several views are included -- the start position, the movement and a larger graphic showing the muscles worked.
The execution of the exercise is provided step-by-step. The targeted muscles are described along with the accompanying muscles. In addition, technique cues are given along with important exercise notes and additional graphics when needed to provide a full explanation.
This book is priceless in planning your palates workout. It's a must-have guide and I highly recommend it to you.
