Yoga For Children Review

Yoga For Children

I love this book. Let me say that I've probably owned this book 4 times, but it continually disappears and I have to buy it again. I am a pediatric occupational therapist, so I do a lot of Yoga with children with disabilities.
I've used this book with kids ages 3 through 18 that have varying levels of disability. The colorful pictures truly grab children's attention. The pictures are basic enough that children can look at the picture and attempt to imitate the pose. The yoga is 'watered down' enough that I can adapt these poses to most any child, not only those with special needs. My own daughter loves to look at this book with me!
You do not need a high knowledge base about Yoga to make this book effective and practical. I've purchased many other kids yoga activities, and this is the one that I use daily in my professional practice.

Arnold's Bodybuilding for Men Review

Arnold's Bodybuilding for Men
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The information presented in the book is no-frills weight training and practical advice. Perhaps that is why some people don't like it. They are usually the ones who are taken in by the allure of protein shakes, supplements of dubious value, and exotic weight training routines. It is unfortunate that Arnold, like most bodybuilders, got his huge gains from steroids. He is clear, however that his massive gains took many years to achieve. People still believe they can go from flab to male model muscle in 12 weeks or 6 months. Muscle takes work, time, and dedication, more than most people are willing to devote. Arnold's dietary advice is practical and no-nonsense. He deflates the standard ideas of high protein diets and vitamin supplements as a way to speed muscle gains. His recommendations are pretty standard, lots of fruits & veggies, small amounts of meat, avoid heavily processed foods. Not a very marketable point of view but at least a logical one. His blurbs about daily nutrition requirements were most likely lifted straight from the FDA, but that info comes from scientists, so its better information than what you read in muscle magazines.
The pictures are of course dated. Nobody wears calf socks and skimpy shorts with white piping anymore, and the models are like normal folks, hairy, balding, shaped funny. Today we are so used to shaved, tanned and sculpted models in magazines and books it is somewhat disconcerting to read this older tome.
His routines are brutal, so don't expect to be able do them completely. Mutiple sets are at the core of his training regimen. I tend to do only 2-3 sets per muscle group, but that is what I am comfortable with. Vary the routines to your liking and ability, because not everybody can keep up with Arnie...

Stretching For Dummies Review

Stretching For Dummies
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I bought this book because I really was a stretching dummy. After being pretty sedentary for a few years, I have started working out again. I kept getting tightness in my arms and legs that I couldn't figure out how to stretch away. This book has cured that, showing me specific stretches for each area of tightness. Now I know how to stretch after I work out. I've never felt any tightness that this book didn't address.
As a bonus, it even explains why you should be warmed up before you stretch, that you need to hold a stretch for 30 seconds for the most effectiveness, what you need to stretch effectively (a towel wrapped around an extremity will help you stretch what you can't reach), and gives a few specific stretching routines for the office, pregnant women, children, seniors, and those participating in specific sports (basketball, skiing, swimming, and racquet sports). The only actual routine I've used is the office one... mostly I just stretch the muscles I worked.
The reason for the four stars is the organization of the book. It does go through by body region, but curiously doesn't include each stretch in that section. For instance, in the "upper body" area, it includes one chest stretch. But it lists two different ones in the "office" stretch. Why didn't it list all of the chest stretches all together so I could easily try all three to see which one worked best for me? I was able to navigate the book much more easily when I realized there was an index in the back. I looked up "chest" and it gave me the page numbers of all the chest stretches.
Still, all of the photographs were good, the writing was easy to understand, and it resolved my after-workout tightness issue.

Itsy Bitsy Yoga for Toddlers and Preschoolers: 8-Minute Routines to Help Your Child Grow Smarter, Be Happier, and Behave Better

This is a great book with really creative ideas to do with those 18 mo - 3 yr olds. I was disappointed that these were not really challenging enough for the 3 1/2 to PreK 5 year olds, since the book said Toddlers AND Preschoolers. As a caregiver I tried a few of these out with some 4 year olds and it didn't really hold their attention, even when using the suggested challenges in the "Yogi Wogi" section. For the 2 year olds however it was right on, and good fun. If the author came out with a book for the older Preschool student I think I would give it a try.

Itsy Bitsy Yoga: Poses to Help Your Baby Sleep Longer, Digest Better, and Grow Stronger Review

Itsy Bitsy Yoga: Poses to Help Your Baby Sleep Longer, Digest Better, and Grow Stronger
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I love this book. I started using it when my baby was 4 weeks old. After trying to do "mommy baby" yoga (using Baby Om) I decided it was much easier to do yoga with my baby separately from my own practice, though there is some overlap. Realistically, you have to stop a million times usually to wipe spit up, nurse, burp, etc, and for me it worked better to have all my attention on my baby. This book gives simple exercises, and great tips to make the experience enjoyable for baby. My baby has gotten more and more used to it the more we do it, and she is very calm, relaxed and peaceful when we do it now. I also like this book because it gives new exercises based on lots of developmental steps (head holding, almost sitting, etc) instead of just yoga for a baby - we all know that a 4 week old is much different from a 4 month old! I highly recommend this and plan to use it until my baby is 2!

Having read "Getting Hip" in order to review it for seniors magazines and additional newspapers, I can now say that I would direct anyone in search of information about hip replacements to this book. This is not a fluffy book! You will be awakened to both the positive and the uncomfortable journey of total hip replacement, and you will be glad you were given the whole picture. The author is more than an excellent writer and storyteller, she is a long-time social justice activist who wants the best for the consumer in need of a hip replacement. With "Getting Hip" you'll be surprised how aware you'll become; you'll know the questions to ask your doctor and you'll know how to prepare yourself from beginning to end.
Best Wishes on your journey!
