Measurement of Joint Motion: A Guide to Goniometry 3rd Edition Review

Measurement of Joint Motion: A Guide to Goniometry 3rd Edition
Average Reviews:

I got an earlier edition of this book in Physical Therapy school and it was invaluable in teaching the finer points of goniometry. I constantly used it as a source of information, until I became comfortable with measuring joint range of motion. Since I am now working in the inpatient arena, I mostly repeatedly measure knees, but refer back to it when I need to brush up on another joint. It has clear pictures and overall is a great reference book for anyone who has to evaluate joint ranges of motion.

Spiritual Authority Review

Watchman Nee is, to me, a perfect example of a person with no "Christian" culture. Living in China, when he read the Bible, he had no premeditated bias, and his insights are astounding. This book focuses on God's authority, his delegated authority, and why it is crucially important, for your own sake, to recognize His authority wherever it lies. It is a book for anyone who wants an extremely mature, humbled walk with God in a depth you can only now imagine. On a side note, don't plan on reading this in a weekend. The information contained within is so deep and profound I found myself stopping after every two paragraphs and meditating on what Nee said for a week. Next to the Bible, it is one of my two favorite books, (the other one being Neil T. Anderson's "Victory Over the Darkness"). Jesus' revelation be with you.

Authority is a tremendous thing in the universe, nothing overshadows it. God s throne is established on His authority. God s authority represents God Himself. God alone is authority in all things; all the authorities of the earth are instituted by God. It is therefore important for us who desire to serve God to know the authority of God. God s authority is absolute, hence we must give Him absolute submission (our hearts attitude) and absolute obedience (our outward actions). But to His delegated authorities we can render absolute submission, but only relative obedience. For their authorities are circumscribed by the measure of the life of Christ in them. Only when they themselves submit to God s authority in them are they able to represent God. Hence there is much we have to learn about how to represent God.

Yoga Body, Buddha Mind Review

Yoga Body, Buddha Mind

As a (semi-serious) practitioner of both yoga and Buddhism, I have for some time wondered about the connections between the two. I feel that there is some connection, but it is hard to know what it is. Neither my Buddhism classes or my yoga classes make any reference to the other, and they almost seem to be competing philosophies at times. Unfortunately the book, although not bad, was a bit of a disappointment.
This was an enjoyable, somewhat rambling discussion that seemed more like a relaxed lecture than a serious monograph. As someone who is a highly regarded yoga teacher and who runs a successful yoga center (one of the most popular in New York from what I can tell, along with Yoga Works and Jivamukti), she clearly knows about yoga. But her knowledge as expressed in this book, although not superficial, does not seem very extensive. In the realm of Buddhism, she is not an experienced teacher or scholar. She makes a few references to things that some yoga teachers have said, but her knowledge does not seem particularly broad. The book is basically structured like a casual talk, interspersed with photos and descriptions of ashtanga asanas. Now so far as that goes, it is not bad, but it is the kind of thing I would rather watch or listen to than read about.
The key question for me is whether the book began to answer my questions and add to my knowledge of the intersection(s) of yoga and Buddhism. In that regard, I must tip my cap to Cyndi Lee and thank her. She does begin to touch on some things, but not nearly to the extent that the title suggests. She may have done some damage to her cause with this overly ambitious title, which implies that she will explain the hows and whys of the linkage of yoga exercise and Buddhist thinking. In fact, she goes on primarily about yoga, and makes the occasional reference to Buddhism. However, some of her comments are illuminating, and helped me to understand why I often experience something similar when I meditate and when I do yoga.
Yoga connects us to the earth, to the universe, to our own physical experience thru breathing and movement. Things are always in flux and life moves to the same rhythms that our breath does. Unlike other forms of exercise, yoga is built around the breath, and this begins to connect us to our minds and to nature as well. When the mind and body are in synch, then we are more in tune with all life, and we are in a position to grow spiritually, as well as become healthier. Yoga grew out of the Hindu (altho Lee says it is separate from Hinduism) Sankhya philosophy, which came along around 200 CE and proposed a dual level of existence: purusha (which basically means spirit) and prakriti (matter). I am a little unclear where the mind fits into it, but yoga means union, and it is an effort to join the two - body and mind, matter and spirit. I am also a little uncertain as to where the Yoga Sutra of Patanjali comes into the picture, since that was another huge point of origin for yoga. Oh well, I guess I will have to learn some more about it. Lee's book is a good starting point for further explorations, and she has a nice yoga center, too. I respect her willingness to take on such a big subject and attempt to popularize it.

Bikini Bootcamp: Two Weeks to Your Ultimate Beach Body

The authors have done a good job of integrating mind/body into a holistic approach to health. Recipes are excellent, food is delicious and workouts are hard! Not for the faint of heart. This regimine will require 100% effort to succeed, particularly if you work full time and have a family. Each morning you are required to write in a journal, meditate and do 15 minutes of yoga. In addition each day requires a 30 - 60 minute walk, a 40 minute strength routine, and on alternate days an additional "core" workout for the abs. Plan on spending about 2 hours a day on just these parts. In addition, there is a lot of prep. time in the kitchen. All food is very close to it's natural state and is loaded with veggies, fresh marinades, and sald dressings. Each of these is made from scratch and requires a lot of time. Still, it is an excellent program and I don't see how they could have done it any easier. I suggest buying the fresh ginger and garlic, chopped in jars (as they suggest) and vegetables already chopped etc. to make it easier. Expect your kitchen to be full of dishes constantly if you follow their eating plan closely.

Yoga Posture Adjustments and Assisting: An Insightful Guide for Yoga Teachers and Students Review

Yoga Posture Adjustments and Assisting: An Insightful Guide for Yoga Teachers and Students
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The only people buying this book ought to be certified yoga teachers, so the question is: does this $30 book add anything significant beyond what was covered in your training and continuing education?
I bought the book because I was a new teacher and was dealing with all the attending insecurities, and so this book was basically an expensive confidence boost--I was amazed that I knew just about everything worth knowing for my teaching in here. There were new and different assists I had never seen, but I just don't see the point for many of these. Example: why squat behind someone and have them sit on your knees or thighs in utkatasana and eagle? Instead of the student supporting their own weight and strengthening their quadriceps, you are doing the work for them, with the result that you build strength rather than the student. What's the point when these poses have a built-in way to ease into them for less strong students, i.e., not squatting so deeply?
Are you ever going to pull someone's arm forward while pressing back on their hip crease with your foot to get them to lengthen before dropping their hand into triangle? Fancy crawling underneath a student in camel and pushing up on their shoulder blades with your foot? Creative, sure. Useful? No.
The first section, "Getting started," is good, but it's only 14 pages, in a huge font with lots of white space and photos. She tells you to approach students directly as if opening the refrigerator, not awkwardly from odd angles, and to correct the most unsafe misalignments first. Fine advice, but I sure hope you learned that in your training.
What this book fails to cover is the practical side of diagnosing problems in poses and how to correct them. The problem is that trainees and the people in this book (all teachers at her studio) mostly know what they're doing. When I started teaching, however, I'd have people that had never done yoga before, and they'd do crazy, crazy stuff and their asanas and vinyasas would be almost unrecognizable.
I'd find myself thinking, "What the hell do I do with a downward dog that looks like THAT?" No help in this book. She doesn't give you any indication of how to correct the most unsafe misalignments, what they might be, who might benefit from a certain assist, etc. It would be helpful just to add, this is good for people with tight shoulders, or, don't bother doing this for someone whose shoulders are really tight--instead, do this.... And it would be really great if she had a photo of a completely messed up revolved triangle and showed you how to go about getting the student into a decent, safe form. But there's none of that kind of real-life practical advice here. There are, however, pointless random quotations from unknown people. "'For me yoga is the most satisfying type of exercise imaginable.' -- Amy X, Yoga Student."
If your training was really poor in this department then you might find enough here to justify the cost. And, for the record, this is the cheapest, ugliest, and most poorly produced $30 book I have ever seen; I can only imagine that this is because it is "published on-demand," which "takes advantage of internet marketing." Hmmm, so the publisher refused to mass-produce the book in the normal way, which yields higher quality at a greatly-reduced cost, so that they could save money on warehousing and charge far more for the book? Fantastic. It would have been a good book for $12.

Lose Your Mummy Tummy Review

Lose Your Mummy Tummy

I've been working out for years, and worked out throughout my pregnancy.
For someone who has some very basic experience with weight training and doing ab work, the only revelation in this book is the focus on working the transverse abs.
You needn't buy this book if you have worked out at even a lower level. Simply plug in "transverse abdominal exercises" in google and you'll get a number of sites which give you exercises for this part of the body on the web for absolutely free.
As for the author's contention that more traditional ab exercises, increase the size of the "Mommy Tummy", having checked with my phsyical therapist...not proven.
As for the book itself: The author suggests that it is "easy" to work in 500 reps of the transverse exercises she recommends per day..and this for a new mother! As a new mother, I was lucky to brush my teeth...even counting to 500 would have been beyound my sleep deprived, stressed out brain!
You can save yourself the cost of this book, and if you don't have time to look for exercises for the transverse muscles, by just "sucking in" your "gut" as many times a day as you can.

Trigger Point Therapy for Low Back Pain: A Self-Treatment Workbook (New Harbinger Self-Help Workbook) Review

Trigger Point Therapy for Low Back Pain: A Self-Treatment Workbook (New Harbinger Self-Help Workbook)
Average Reviews:

I have purchased quite a few books on trigger points as I have suffered with shoulder and upper back pain for many years. I went to the so called experts in my city, some even had a roster of clients that included pro athletes. Please don't be fooled, they knew little about what they did. I eventually stumbled across Davies book and was quite impressed with the reviews it got. So I started my in depth education of trigger points.
TP Therapy for Low Back Pain is incredibly thorough. It gives you tests to see for yourself where your issues may be. It is an absolute gem. I was so impressed that I took a flight to Chicago to get treated by Sharon and her staff. What a refreshing change. They were highly knowledgeable and really cared about their work!

Working closely with trigger point pioneers Janet Travell and David Simons, Sharon Sauer developed a range of trigger point therapy treatment protocols for many areas of the body. This book presents her protocols for lumbar, buttock, and ilio-sacral pain. These gentle techniques are easy to learn and administer at home. They include compression, stretching, and range of motion exercises for the muscles that refer pain to the lower back and hip areas. This book includes an overview of myofascial trigger point therapy, describing the basic process of treatment. It also includes an index of all pain and dysfunction symptoms pertaining to the hip and lower back, including pain, numbness, weakness, or restricted range of motion in specific areas, which will enable readers to find the muscles most likely to be the cause of the specific symptoms presented.Although this book is geared toward readers wishing to use the techniques for self-care, one chapter details how health care professionals can add these techniques to their practices.
