Deep Tissue Massage: A Visual Guide to Techniques Review

Deep Tissue Massage: A Visual Guide to Techniques

I am a NY State Licensed and National Board Certified Massage Therapist. Honestly speaking, deep tissue massage is in great demand as people stress out from work and life. About 90% of my clients come for deep tissue massage.
I have most of the reference material for Deep Tissue Massage, including this book and DVD by Art Riggs, Deep Tissue & Neuromuscular Therapy (2 sets) by Sean Riehl, Balanced Body by Donald W. Scheumann, and Myoskeletal Alignment Techniques (Vol 1) by Erik Dalton. Art Riggs' teaching material excels from them all. Furthermore, I appreciated the way how Riggs handled customer complaints. Riggs answered my email complaints personally and have turned a customer complaint into a praise. On the other extreme, I never got any email answer from Erik Dalton regarding my purchase (I did get an order confirmation from his company).
A final word, you will not regret buying the study material from Art Riggs, and don't waste money on the studying material for Myoskeletal Alignment Techniques. Most of the techniques from Myoskeletal Alignment (Vol 1) can be found in Art Riggs' Deep Tissue Massage.
Enjoy your Deep Tissue Massage

Energy Balance through the Tao: Exercises for Cultivating Yin Energy Review

Energy Balance through the Tao: Exercises for Cultivating Yin Energy

Many of the BIG problems in Health, Psychology and Relationships can be said to originate in an excess of Yang energy. Not just the excesses of aggression, winning, and dominating, but the whole frenetic race toward ever more energy draining and attenton demanding multi-tasking. Our society is becoming progressively more hypomanic and it sometimes seems that it is only a matter of time before everyone will start to show symptoms of attention deficit disorder! Some of the illnesses that are becoming more prevalent, including some of the disorders of immune function, digestion and thermoregulation, can also be thought of as consequences of a rampant and unbalanced Yang force.
It is desperately important for us to try and balance those excesses in our own lives, and it is a tough call with so many demands on us. The exercises in this book are all designed to balance the Yin and Yang energies of our bodies. Cultivating Yin energy is particularly important for men and these exercises really fit the bill. What I have always liked about Mantak Chia's work, is that he tries to provide explanations for the exercises, rather than just providing a catalog of techniques. And some of the exercises can have potent effects.
Some of the exercises require some strength and flexibility, so I recommend that people should have a discussion with their health care provider before starting this kind of new program.
This is a reprint of the book Tao Yin: Excercises for Revitalization, Health & Longevity, which was published in Thailand in 1999. There are only some minor differences between the two.
If you don't have the earlier book, you will find a lot of valuable material here.

Relieving Pelvic Pain During and After Pregnancy: How Women Can Heal Chronic Pelvic Instability Review

Relieving Pelvic Pain During and After Pregnancy: How Women Can Heal Chronic Pelvic Instability

Having suffered with Symphysis Pubis Dysfunction (a.k.a. SPD, Diastis Symphysis Pubis, pelvic girdle pain, and pregnancy-related pelvic pain) for most of two pregnancies now, I was very intrigued by this book that my sister gave me for Christmas. It was written by a physical therapist from the Netherlands who has had pelvic problems during her own pregnancies, and developed exercises to reduce the pain of SPD.
One of the most interesting things about this book is that it goes counter to what I've often read (mostly on the Internet, since this is the first book I've ever come across that discussed this issue). Most advice runs along the lines of "keep your knees together ALL THE TIME." Rolling over, getting out of the car, when seated, etc. The author of this book says that this only exacerbates the problem (which is caused by misalignment in the sacro-iliac joint) and that symmetrical and stabilized movement is most important. Many of the exercises involve a knees-apart posture (which I would have thought would be excruciating to me, but I've found they actually help!), stretching and strengthening the muscles around the hips to help stabilize them.
I like the author's methodology (large-scale research, well documented) and personal approach. I do have some beefs with the book, including a less-than-ideal layout (illustrations for exercises on different pages than the explanations) and some vagueness in the directions for the exercises (how long do I hold it? how many repetitions? how far away from me should my feet be? should I hold my back flat to the floor? Etc.) Overall, however, I felt the book was both a good overview of the causes of pregnancy-related pelvic pain that included an in-depth look of how it affects the lives of those who live with it. It has sections for both the layperson/patient and for physical therapists (I'm taking it with me the next time I go to PT). It's a good resource for those of us who have SPD and don't want to end up in a wheelchair or on crutches by the end of our pregnancies.
I've tried the basic Symmetry and Stabilization exercises, and found them to be very helpful in relieving pain when I feel "out of whack." Also, as a result of the section on how SPD affects lifestyle, I have tried not to limit my range of motion while limiting the stress that I put on my pelvis. (One of the effects that SPD often has is to make you feel as if you will really hurt yourself if you go beyond a very limited range of motion, which is why I would have appreciated more explicit directions for the exercises.) Some of the basic "body mechanics" techniques I have found particularly helpful, especially the "how to roll over in bed" maneuver. I can now roll in bed relatively pain free (!) - which was impossible without outside assistance in my last pregnancy.
I would recommend this book to anyone who has had pelvic pain during or after pregnancy - I wish I'd had it with my first pregnancy.

Pregnancy weakens the ligaments that keep the pelvic bones together. If those weakened ligaments become overloaded or injured, it results in pelvic instability - pain around the joints that can be brief or last for years after the birth. In 1996, Cecile Röst, who suffered from this condition herself, devised a treatment program that is simple, home based, and proven to work. Her book, with over 100 illustrations and detailed testimonials, is divided into two parts. The first part shows simple exercises for symmetry and stabilization, and the proper way to lie, sit, and get out of a car in order to prevent pelvic instability during pregnancy. Patients can practice these exercises and positions with or without a care provider's help. Part two, aimed at care providers, shows the results of a survey carried out among 200 women suffering from pelvic complaints. Here the author also presents a theoretical treatise of pelvic pain, the protocol of the first consult, and the contents of the therapy, including a sports program.

Kum Nye Tibetan Yoga: A Complete Guide to Health and Wellbeing Review

Kum Nye Tibetan Yoga: A Complete Guide to Health and Wellbeing

this book was suggested to me by Amazon and I purchased it on a whim. despite being somewhat knowledgeable about Tibetan Buddhism, I had never heard of Tarthang Tulku or Kum Nye before. I am glad I did, because this book has been a real inspiration to me and has enriched my practice of meditation and body awareness.
the introduction is one of the most interesting and enjoyable parts of the book. Tarthang Tulku presents a perspective on spirituality and the body which should be familiar to anyone involved in yoga or somatic practices (e.g. Feldenkrais, Bioenergetics), but in a way that is fresh and inspirational. I don't know if the book was partially ghost written, but I was surprised at the clarity and poetry of the writing coming from a non-native speaker. Tarthang Tulku explains the goals and philosophy of this system of meditation in a way that really communicates the spirit of the work and inspires one with a sense of the true possibility for growth and wholeness.
the bulk of the book consists of fairly detailed exercises that combine breathing and movement with meditative awareness. the descriptions are fairly clear, but there are only sparse drawings and it is sometimes a little difficult understand exactly what is being described. however, the work is so straightforward that one can easily invent slight variations or entirely new techniques.
in fact, the author insinuates that kum nye as taught by his father was quite freeform, and that he codified it into a series of exercises to make it more accessible to 'westerners'. personally, I find that I prefer to keep things loose and unstructured, and that I learn more by letting my body guide the process rather than trying to rigorously follow a set of exercises. although Tarthang Tulku recommends that kind of approach in some of his other work (e.g. Gesture of Balance), I think the point could have been communicated better here. that and the lack of more detailed illustrations are the only reason why this book gets four stars instead of five.
as a final note, I am surprised that I have never heard of this teacher before. as a student of somatic psychology, I think Tarthang Tulku's work deserves more attention. his approach has striking similarities to both Feldenkrais and Bioenergetics. I hope in the future that this simple and inspirational work will receive more attention within the community of body awareness practitioners, and that an extensive dialog can occur between practitioners of these methods and those of us who have been trained in 'western' techniques and perspectives.
