Being both a dancer and physician I was very excited about this book. Unfortunately it was rather vague. I had hoped it would clearly define the dance positions, specify the muscles used in achieving and maintaining the dance positions and list the injuries that occurred to the muscles, tendons and ligaments as a result of both the correct and incorrect dance positions.
The book did not clearly define either the dance or medical terminology and was short on anatomical illustrations and imaging. I had also hoped it would provide information about how to prevent injuries such as specific, illustrated the correct positioning and stretching exercises for each position. Treatment of injuries were poorly defined. Again specific information about type of ROM, stretching, strengthening and taping methods were omitted.
This book has great potential and this is only the first edition. It appears to be a good book for Physiatrists. I hope with the second edition she will expand to reach a wider audience to include those who get the injuries (dancers) as well as those who treat them (internists, physical therapists, neurologists and orthopedists.)

Groundbreaking and long overdue, Essential Dance Medicine is a unique text designed to help medical professionals learn the presentations, differential diagnoses and available treatment options for common dance injuries. As different types of dance have evolved, so have their related injuries. This novel text explains the underlying principles associated with correct ballet, modern and ethnic dance movements to better understand the pathophysiology and mechanism of action for the injuries described. It provides further insight by elucidating common errors and compensations dancers often make in an effort to achieve correct positioning and technique.Describing different types of dance injuries according to body region, each chapter is organized by case reports that depict a typical patient, followed by the epidemiology and pathophysiology associated with the dancer's injury. The history, physical examination findings, imaging and diagnostic evaluation for each condition are discussed. Non-operative and surgical treatment options are described according to chronicity and stage of severity of the injury. To provide evidence behind the algorithms of treatment and to highlight applicable research, relevant studies are cited as often as possible. Classic texts are also referenced to provide more in-depth information.Certain to become a gold standard in the field, Essential Dance Medicine is an important new text that provides medical professionals with the necessary tools to treat amateur and professional dancers and help them prolong their dance careers.

This manual, which comprises both a theoretical and a practical section, addresses itself to all who are interested in the many and various uses of step apparatus during functional fitness and health training. The theoretical section gives an overview of aims, types of training and programme structure as well as methods of teaching and arranging. In the practical sections, basic steps, combinations of steps, arm movements and arm formations are described, as well as standard techniques, and set out in the usual terms. The section on technique is rounded off with a description of functional strengthening and mobility exercises with and at the step apparatus. The step aerobics programmes thus elaborated aim, on the one hand, at training general dynamic endurance and co-ordination; on the other hand, programmes are introduced, which also train strength and mobility. The programmes are designed so that they can be transferred straight into a practical teaching programme.

As a yoga instructor, I am always looking for books to assist my growth as a teacher. Anatomy can be a challenging aspect of teaching yoga - until now. "Anatomy and Asana: Preventing Yoga Injuries" by Susi Hately Aldous is a very accessible anatomy book for yoga instructors and practitioners alike. Unlike other similar books, which tend to be dry, boring reading, this book is written in an easy to understand fashion with clear illustrations. I felt more comfortable with my understanding of anatomy and how it relates to yoga after reading this book. It will be a very useful companion to my other anatomy books - and most likely, it will be the main one I turn to.

Walking Beans Wasn't Something You Did With Your Dog: Stories Of Growing Up In And Around Small Towns In The Midwest Review

Walking Beans Wasn't Something You Did With Your Dog: Stories Of Growing Up In And Around Small Towns In The Midwest

"Walking Beans" is a fun read and took me back to my days growing up in rural Iowa.
"Small Town Ghosts" brought back memories of going into town on Saturday night, attending a movie and having a soda at the drug store. And, whatever happened to orange push ups?
"How Our Dog Got His New Name" had me laughing out loud. "Watching Bonanza on Color Television" reminded me of the days before we had our own TV set and I would go to the neighbors to watch baseball on Saturday afternoons.
Every story brought back memories. This book is a very enjoyable read
