"Fifty, sixty swats. Surely the man was insane! How could he keep doing this to her? How could he keep hurting her, when he claimed he loved her? He was crazy! She was crazy. This was wrong, so wrong! And then at last he stopped.Larissa coughed and gasped, unable to move. Marco lifted her, settling her on his lap and held her close. She could feel his heart beating - fast and hard. His shirt felt sweat-damp, and she glanced up, expecting to see sweat across his brow. What she did see so surprised her that she was stunned. It was tears, not sweat that trailed down his face. Tears had dampened his shirt. He was weeping almost as hard as she was. She threw her arms around his neck and sobbed for all the pain he had caused. She sobbed for the horrible last two days - starting with the thugs who had accosted her. She sobbed for all the pretty things Marco had told her, because she hadn`t believed him. And she sobbed because, as foolish as it sounded, she loved him."I pray, my sweet, that I never have cause to punish you like that again," he whispered. She hoped so, too. "Now, let me take you home. Perchance after a rest, you`ll feel well enough to accompany me for dinner."She just nodded. It was the safest thing to do. She`d agree to anything he said. She`d let him comfort her, and feed her, and even make love to her. And then tomorrow she`d have to make sure that he never found her again." Seven Chapters!

Too short and shallow. He buys the woman, takes her to his cabin, has his way with her, the end. Disappointing.

"On the first day that he did leave her loose in the house, with orders and supplies to have made dinner by the time he got home, Carolyn did what she felt she had to do. She had to make some sort of effort to escape. She couldn't just accept what had happened to her. All she wanted was to get away from him - she hadn't thought much further than that. She didn't even know what direction to travel in, but figured that Shepherdstown was roughly due East of where she was.She hoped."

The Miscreant and The Master Review

When attempting to write this review I went back to read the editorial review and actually was surprised to read that Ayko was exiled from her community and is mistaken for a spy by Master Xang. I actually didn't get that from the story at all. Loki Renard is a decent storyteller, but in this case I think the story falls short of being complete. I found it hard to engage in this storyline, difficult to connect to the characters and was just plain underwhelmed by the whole thing.

It was supposed to be a death sentence. Cast out of her home in shame for her refusal to marry an old farmer, headstrong aspiring writer Ayko is determined to make her own way in the world as an independent woman. But in a land torn asunder by civil war, and a countryside dotted with faction troops, a young woman alone in the wilderness is easy pickings, even one as bright and witty as Ayko. When she is caught near a military settlement and taken for a spy, Ayko is faced with the biggest and most painful decision of her life.Deprived of her freedom by Q'un's famous Master Xang, a man who permits no disobedience from those in his care, Ayko realizes that her rebellion and subsequent exile have brought her to a world in which men command, and women are treated with a firm hand. Can she allow herself to submit to the charming Master who all too often turns her over his lap and spanks her soundly for her bratty misbehavior? Or will her pride and fierce independent streak demand that she flee once more into the dangerous countryside?
