I wasn't sure what kind of book this would be. So,first of all, this is NOT a diet cookbook, far from it! Although she included many "Skinny" low fat or low carb versions of her recipes in this book (they look really good), I'm not going to be making the "skinny" versions, HAHA! I saw Diane Sawyer swooning over the "Fall To Your Knees Mac & Cheese" that Carnie prepared on Good Morning America, actually, the whole crew was going nuts, so, how bad could this be?" I ordered it and it's TERRIFIC! FIVE STARS, I couldn't be more pleaasantly surprised, I have "folded the page" to mark MOST of the recipes, my poor book is mutilated. I have already tried seven recipes (mind you, I've only had the book a few days)and 100% of those are going into my file for holiday entertaining. The seven recipes I've made so far are: "Butternut Bruschetta" (OHMYGOD with toasted walnuts, port, cream cheese, sage, beautiful for Thanksgiving...), "Fall to your Knees Mac & Cheese" (it is so over the top, it's like a last meal for mac & cheese addicts),"Fresh Pear Cheesecake" (easy and impressive, looks like it's from a pastry shop) "Mini Corn Souffles" (EASY made in 4 oz muffin pan and served warm with a dollop of sour cream, salsa or guac as hor's d'oeuvres,) "Hungarian Pork Chops" (Rich and complex, good for cold weather), Wasabi Deviled Eggs (3 ingredients + garnish and looks and tastes amazing) and a fresh vegetable chopped salad with southwestern flavors called "Viva Las Veggies" that I just made and can't stop eating. ALL of these recipes are colorful, pretty and appropriate to serve to guests. There are a few fun and kitsch-y 1950's style "Back Of The Box" recipes that I would categorize as secret pleasures, but many more are sophisticated appetizers; tapas, bruschetta, desserts, brunch dishes, entrees, etc. that are quick prep and IMPRESSIVE presentations..it is VERY broad ranging and a beautiful book plus it's FUNNY to read, Carnie is quite a character! This book is downright handy for the working "foodie" who wants to serve something special but is on a tight schedule. The recipes are ALL do-able, nothing crazy, nothing boring, no impossible recipes either. Much of it is "comfort food", but comfort food from a hipper, more sophisticated place, with more trendy influences than you would find in a typical down home style cookbook. It's as if Paula Deen married Mario Batali and moved to Malibu. The large chapters of Appetizers and Desserts are what I need for the holidays as it is my year to have the family dinners. I'll definitely be giving these books as gifts this year, especially in my office. What else costs $13.57, looks like it cost $50.00 (this book is huge, 12" X 10" with a separate glossy bookcover, gorgeous, full-page, color photo on every other page, not typical for a book at this price point, it's SO well done, I hope this was a BIG printing because I'm ordering more). I'm really enthusiastic about this book both as a cooking resource and as a Xmas gift, it's not gender specific and it rocks..LOVE IT!!!!!!! Thanks, Carnie, you're full of surprises!

The receipes in this book are the cakes that my grandmother made when I was a child. I can remember her in the kitchen baking all day and then placing a towel on the counter and displaying all her baked cakes for our family. The photography in this book is awesome. From the coconut cake on the cover to the buttermilk cake is a replicate of the real thing. The receipes are easy to follow and well written. If you love the southern heritage of cakes made by your grandmother or your mom, you'll find them all in this wonderful book. I found the ingredients to be readily available in my pantry and the stories about each recipe add to the interesting reading. A nice addition to my collection.

Crow Dog: Four Generations of Sioux Medicine Men Review

Crow Dog: Four Generations of Sioux Medicine Men

In the beginning paragraph it says, "We are still making history." as Crow Dog explains his family roots. That sentence sums up the book for me. It is history. The history that is learned and not lost by Crow Dog. The ceremonies and native ways that he is trying to maintain and to pass on are intricately described. I don't think I have read a book that is so visually written. I could picture the things he described. I savored this book for a few months, letting each chapter sink in. Although the book is written in a simple manner there is nothing simple about the information shared. A great read!

i teach fitness classes at a major national chain. this book is excellent. great ideas, wonderful pictures and tips. no diets (which i don't always like to have mixed with my fitness/exercise books). it's pure exercise moves using barbells, dumbbells, bands, stability balls and machines with good variety on each. if you workout at home only without a gym this probably won't work for you but if you're a gym person this is a great book. i should mention that i really like the diversity of fitness models. that's something you don't always see in fitness books but i really appreciate it. this book is like having a personal trainer! i'm going to use it to select some exercises before i go to the gym then when i get there i'll just do the routine i planned for myself. again, i have lots of exercise experience but i still find this book to be a fresh edititon to my fitness book collection. if you like muscle & fitness hers magazine you'll really like all the workouts in one easy to ready, and pretty, book. good job!!!!

At My Grandmother's Knee: Recipes & Memories Handed Down By Women of the South Review

At My Grandmother's Knee: Recipes and Memories Handed Down By Women of the South

A cookbook is one thing, but a cookbook with stories is another, and I love one that gets it right. This one definitely gets it right, and I'm going to buy myself, my mama, and probably various other people a copy.
The pictures are outstanding - I almost licked the screen when I got to the chocolate gravy. The recipes are simple and straight-forward. How could you go wrong with recipes titled "Pimento Cheese a la Nanny" and "Memama's Chocolate Sheet Cake"? Since they come from southern grandmothers, there's probably nothing here that the reader hasn't tasted or at least heard of, and the recipes don't call for any fancy, hard to get ingredients.
The heart of the book, however, are the stories that precede each recipe. Natives from across the South share warm recollections of their grandmothers' kitchens. I chuckled at the quote, "You'd have to keep saying, 'Ma-Maw, that's enough. Come sit down.'", because how many times have we had to tell my own grandmother that??? This is a wonderful book that should find its way onto many southern shelves, whether the readers are cooks or not.
