Sheng Zhen Wuji Yuan Gong: Qigong of Unconditional Love Review

Sheng Zhen Wuji Yuan Gong: Qigong of Unconditional Love
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The book is written by the originator of this particular style of qigong, Master Li Jun Feng, and is the authoritative guide for any practitioner of Sheng Zhen Wuji Yuan Gong. It contains some background material, but is basically a 'how-to' book.
Every posture, or exercise, is described technically and is illustrated by photos of Master Li performing it. Additionally the postures has a set of contemplations that the practitioner can use to enhance the effect of the exercises. Sheng Zhen Wuji Yuan Gong is constructed as series of postures that each can take anywhere from 10 minutes to several hours to perform depending on the speed and number of repetitions of each exercise the practitioner wishes to do. There are four standing and three sitting series of postures as well as two different types of meditations that are all covered by this book.
Like any book of this kind it best serves the purpose of being a helpful additional tool and cannot fully replace the hands-on guidance of a good teacher. But as such it is excellent, with hundreds of good photos and easy-to-follow descriptions of each exercise. Any motivated qigong practitioner should be able to learn the forms from the book. Even more so if done in combination with the available videos.
The author is well known in China, as he used to be the head coach of the Beijing Wushu (martial art / kung fu) Team as well as the National Wushu Team for many years, He also starred in some Chinese martial arts movies before giving it all up to dedicate his time to develop and teach this beautiful and inspiring form of qigong.
I can personally vouch for the effectiveness of the Sheng Zhen Wuji Yuan Gong style of qigong when it comes to fulfilling the promises of Chinese energy cultivation. The exercises are easy to learn (but can be hard to master) and feel good to do. Unlike some other schools of qigong there are no stringent demands of what time of the day you should train, the cardinal directions and such. But it is no less 'serious' for that. Practicing Sheng Zhen Wuji Yuan Gong is effective for your health and well-being, and might do some very nice things for your mind and spirit as well.

I have to say that I was extremely disappointed by this examiniation review book. Each chapter basically contains pages and pages of lists - and THAT IS ALL....if I needed a list of the rotator cuff muscles or the cranial nerves I could just as easily consult my anatomy text thank you. This review boasts 6 practice examinations, but once you have taken one of them, you have pretty much taken them all....why???...because she repeats the same questions over and over, even WITHIN THE SAME TEST!!!! This book is very poorly written and shows an overall lack of effort on the author's part. A friend who graduated a few years ago showed me his copy (a previous edition) and guess what - it included the exact same practice tests as well...looks like Ms. Meyer has been repackaging the same review book for years with no changes. Thanks for nothing....
If you want a REAL examination review, do the online review offered by the FSBPT...the same people who create the test....

The Big Penis Book 3-D Review

The Big Penis Book 3-D
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
First off I have to say that the 3D effect is awesome in this book, easily one of the best books of 3D I've seen. It's a nice size (pardon) book, in good quality like Taschen does.
Also, yes, the appendages here range from a few average, to big, to oh my god, and a couple in the "No Way" range. Still not sure if the guy at the beginning with a member hanging to his knees was real!
Bad part: Ugly and/or seedy guys. OK, a FEW weren't too terrible, but many were sleazy. Many photos were from the 60s or 70s, judging by surroundings, and one nekkid guy was in an 80s Members Only (no pun) type jacket. No "big" deal with the aged photos. Most of the men were either trailer-parked looking, or young guys who'd rather do porn than get a real job! If the object was to turn on women, NOT! Most of us aren't enticed by a scuzzy guy in cowboy hat and trashy pickup truck, Colt 45 on floor, holding his wanger. Dittos for the wife-beater type flashing his stuff while flipping us off. Then there's one shot that looks like they picked up a homeless guy outside the nearest liquor shop and paid him 5 bucks to lie nude on a smelly couch. Oh, there are other ethnicities here, but they made the black men appear menacing and Latinos look like greasy "suave" stereotypes.
Anyway, yes, there are some giant tallywhackers here. And the effect is so real you'll almost smell the booze and tobacco emanating from the models! If you're just in it for the big parts, I'm sure you'll enjoy it. If you want hunks in 3D that you'll want to jump on, not really. I felt like I needed a shot of penicillin after I looked at it.
Like the cover? It's in 3D too and looks very lifelike!

Watch how they follow you around the room It's hard to imagine a book that could beat The Big Penis Bookfor grabbing attention and driving sales, unless it would be those sameunimaginably colossal generative units seen in breathtaking 3-D. Thatpop-up centerfold we joked about adding? In 3-D every page becomes apop-up! This 220-page, 30 by 30 cm special edition includes 96 images from the original book, plus 8 new bonus photos, transformedinto eye-popping 3-Dby Jon Schnitzer and The Brain Factory, the geniuses whipping upspecial effects for filmmakers such as Tim Burton. There is a revisedintroduction, new layout, and two pairs of red/blue anaglyph glasses included, so the book can be shared with a friend, or simply enjoyed alone after the first pair of glasses wears out. Unlike other 3-D pictures you may have seen, the photos in The Big Penis Book 3-Ddo not look distorted when viewed without the glasses. The BrainFactory's technique is so subtle it's hard to even detect the red/bluetint in many of the black and white photos, but when you put on yourglasses the parts of interest leap from the page, not in flat layers asin old-style 3-D, but as thick, fully rounded, touchable contours. That this is a red-hot gift book is a no-brainer. Fromthe dawn of 3-D technology, spears, sticks, guns, and rockets have beenaimed at the audience to demonstrate the realism of the effect. Thespecial effects in The Big Penis Book 3-D are no less convincing.

MRI Normal Variants and Pitfalls Review

MRI Normal Variants and Pitfalls
Average Reviews:

I didn't care for this book much. It strikes me as just a collection of images the authors had lying around. No real purpose or structure. To suggest that this book is about pitfalls is misleading. There's really no text to this book, just captions to pictures. So don't expect a discussion of common pitfalls and how to avoid them. This book isn't even remotely as useful as Keats, so the comparison is inaccurate in my opinion. The idea is a good one, but this book does not deliver what the title suggests.

This is a good book for children of all ages. I bought this book sixteen or seventeen years ago and really enjoyed reading it to my son as well as my friends and family. It is about being positive and cooperative, the very premise of good manners. The characters are funny and the lessons valuable. The point of the lessons make perfect sense and once learned by a child, carry him or her through life with a smile. Grumpy, negative adults need to read this more than children.

Circle of Greed: The Spectacular Rise and Fall of the Lawyer Who Brought Corporate America to Its Knees Review

Circle of Greed: The Spectacular Rise and Fall of the Lawyer Who Brought Corporate America to Its Knees
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Circle of Greed provides a fascinating account of the rise and fall one of the most famous--or infamous--class action lawyers, Bill Lerach. The book has many fine qualities. First, it is very interesting reading. Lerach has lived a colorful life, and Dillon and Cannon tell a heck of a story.
Second, because Lerach was so prominent in prosecuting class actions, the book provides a concise history of many of the most important cases of fraud in the financial industry over the last several decades, a history that could not be more timely. Dillon and Cannon do a wonderful job of explaining in clear and accessible terms some of the shenanigans in which corporate America has engaged. Those descriptions by themselves justify the price of the book.
Third, Circle of Greed offers a balanced account of class actions and their virtues and vices as a means of achieving justice. Lerach himself appears as a complicated character: a true believer who was so committed to his cause--and to winning--that he was willing to bend and even break the rules, leading to his incarceration.
As a law professor, I teach about and study class actions and complex litigation. Over the years I have learned that people's ideological commitments tend to shape their views of class action litigation rather than the other way around. As a result, Circle of Greed is likely to be a Rorschach test. Those who hate class actions may object that Dillon and Cannon fail to condemn Lerach in clear enough terms. Those who are enamored with class actions may think Dillon and Cannon were too tough on Lerach--or should have chosen a more sympathetic subject, a class action lawyer who acted more ethically. But those who read Circle of Greed with an open mind may learn a little bit about one man's story, as well as a bit about the strengths and weaknesses of class litigation. Dillon and Cannon just provide the facts. The reader has to decide what to do with them.

And Then the Roof Caved In: How Wall Street's Greed and Stupidity Brought Capitalism to Its Knees Review

And Then the Roof Caved In: How Wall Street's Greed and Stupidity Brought Capitalism to Its Knees
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
David Faber's new book, "And The The Roof Caved In," hit The New York Times best seller list for the first time this week. It debuted at an impressive #10.
I enjoyed the book. It's an easy read which, given the subject -- the credit and financial crises -- is not an easy thing to do. Given that his day job is a reporter for CNBC, Faber gets credit for not pulling too many punches when it comes to Wall Street. My guess is that the book's subtitle, How Wall Street's Greed And Stupidity Brought Capitalism To Its Knees, gave some of Faber's CNBC colleagues and the people he reports on a serious case of heartburn.
But saying I enjoyed Faber's book and recommending it to others are two different things. The book is based on a 90 minute program -- "House of Cards" -- CNBC first aired in February. The book reads like a TV script (try to imagine Faber doing the voice over with the text of his book) with short chapters that appear to mimic the segments in the show. The still pictures in the book are from the program. And while the book does goes into more detail on some subjects than the program (after all, it doesn't have moving pictures to tell stories), it's still largely at TV-audience depth, that is to say at or just slightly below the surface.
I watched "House of Cards" again after reading the book and reconfirmed my initial thought that, instead of buying the book, you'd learn just about as much by watching it for free on Hulu or paying $4.99 to download it on iTunes. It's good TV and well worth the 90 minutes it will take to watch in it's entirety.
If you prefer reading to watching, try William Cohan's "House of Cards" --same title as the CNBC program but much richer content.

CNBC's David Faber takes an in-depth look at the causes and consequences of the recent financial collapse
And Then the Roof Caved In lays bare the truth of the credit crisis, whose defining emotion at every turn has been greed, and whose defining failure is the complicity of the U.S. government in letting that greed rule the day. Written by CNBC's David Faber, this book painstakingly details the truth of what really happened with compelling characters who offer their first-hand accounts of what they did and why they did it.
Page by page, Faber explains the events of the previous seven years that planted the seeds for the worst economic crisis since the Great Depression. He begins in 2001, when the Federal Reserve embarked on an unprecedented effort to help the economy recover from the attacks of 9/11 by sending interest rates to all time lows. Faber also gives you an up-close look at where the crisis was incubated and unleashed upon the world-Wall Street-and introduces you to insiders from investment banks and mortgage lenders to ratings agencies, that unwittingly conspired to insure lending standards were abandoned in the head long rush for profits.
Based on two years of research, this book provides deep background into the current credit crisis
Offers the insights of experienced professionals-from Alan Greenspan to prominent bankers and regulators-who were on the front lines
Created by David Faber, the face of morning business news on CNBC, and host of the network's award winning documentaries

From regulators who tried to stop this problem before it swung out of control to hedge fund managers who correctly foresaw the coming housing crash and profited from it, And Then the Roof Caved In shows you how the crisis we currently face came to be.

The Knees Of Gullah Island Review

The Knees Of Gullah Island
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Twenty five years have passed since Gillam Hale and his family lost their freedom to thieving slavers. They were shanghaied and sold to plantations across the south. He escaped his captors, exhausted his search for his family to no avail, eventually settled with a woman, Rena, and fathered a son. In the first of many coincidences, Gillam's long lost son Joseph, on a thirteen year search for his father, literally stumbles into his backyard. Reunited with Joseph, Gillam leaves Rena with reckless abandon and returns to the Low Country to reclaim his remaining children and the love of his life, his wife, the beautiful mulatto, Queen Esther. Unbeknownst to Gillam, Queen Esther, while "property" of her former master, bore two children for her owner. Thus upon his arrival, the long awaited family reunion is a bit awkward to say the least. Queen Esther is not so sure that Gillam is the man for her after experiencing some levels of independence with her very successful restaurant business. The former slave owner is quite possessive over the still beautiful Queen Esther and is not happy with Gillam's arrival. His children are happy but unsure of what it means to have a father in their midst again; while her "other" children grapple with mixed emotions regarding this man from their mother's past. However, with the assistance of a supporting cast of eccentric characters, prayer, and some Gullah root working, it appears that the Hale Family may be on the road to recovery.
If you enjoyed the debut, The Legend of Quito Road, there is little doubt you will enjoy The Knees of Gullah Island with equal measure because the latter references many of the same characters, is written in the same storytelling manner, and uses the same writing style, same cadence, and voice. Unfortunately, these very points caused consternation while reading the debut and haunted me again in the sequel. My hope for improvement and growth was not realized in this offering. A few things really stood out: one being there were so many interrelated characters introduced so frequently. There was a near constant need to consult the three family tree diagrams just to keep the characters aligned in my head; doing so became a recurring necessity rather than an optional reference. Another was the overlapping plotlines were a bit convoluted and filled with entirely too many coincidences. A major plus was I truly enjoyed the local anecdotes and lessons the author infused into the story. Disappointingly, much of his style relies on "telling" rather than showing which results in choppy delivery (almost to the point of interrupting the story) or uneven pacing when he pauses to explain some aspect of history, culture, politics of the day, etc. which was often used to justify character motivation, an outcome or prelude to some event, or simply to set the scene for action. Finally, I was left with a few unanswered questions, but perhaps another book is under development to address them and other loose ends.
Overall, while I thought the execution could use some work, the premise of the novel was good. This saga revisited the Hale Clan and illustrated the devastating effect that chattel slavery had on them. The family separation, long-suffering loss/anxiety, rapes, and other unimaginable hardships were addressed along with the complex social, racial, political, and economic ties that accompanied the trade and evolved during Reconstruction. The book did not focus exclusively on the Sea Islands as the title suggests; however it provided a brief but accurate introduction to the Gullah people; their origins, unique dialect/language, culture, and pervasive influence on the Low Country and surrounding areas. This insertion proved to be an interesting and educational bonus to the story.

On Bended Knee: The Press and the Reagan Presidency Review

On Bended Knee: The Press and the Reagan Presidency
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
ON BENDED KNEE: THE PRESS AND THE REAGAN PRESIDENCY is (now) a historical snapshot and a thorough analysis of that emerging picture. The focus of attention is upon the exact relationship between (not surprisingly) the press apparatus of the Reagan Administration and the press itself. And his conclusion -- that Reagan faced a press that rarely even thought about trying to draw blood -- is something that any Reagan supporter would find hard to argue. After all, author Mark Hertsgaard even gets some quotes from Reagan Administration officials who basically agree with his argument.
ON BENDED KNEE was published in 1988 (the book mentions the on-going Presidential campaign of that year, but seems blissfully unaware of its conclusion), and the main feature separating this political book from political books of today is that there appears to have been actual research put into it. While some modern books seem content to rest their conclusions on the backs of half-remembered interviews on CNN or from rumors they gleamed off the Internets, Hertsgaard interviewed over 175 persons. Persons from both the press and the Reagan Administration.
It's these interviews that drive the book. Hertsgaard's technique is to proceed chronologically, letting the quotes build up an individual story, and then inserting his own analysis to show how these specific events fall into an overall pattern. Hertsgaard spends time analyzing both the construction/distribution of the Reagan "message" and how that message was parsed by the media. The pattern seems eerily similar to the post-9/11 coverage of today's government and those parallels will seem obvious and ominous.
I found this to be a very convincing argument. Hertsgaard obviously has a point of view (negative on both the Reagan policies and on the press coverage they received), but he's very logical and meticulous in laying out his case. People looking for how the Reagan people played puppet-master with the press may be disappointed, as the overwhelming attention is placed on the self-censorship that took place within the press itself with little need of any influence from the Administration. However, he does take some time to show how the Reagan Public Relations circle manipulated news and images to place their man in the best light possible.
It's interesting to read about the birth of many awful aspects of the media which were new at the time, but which are now depressingly ever-present. The author looks at the Presidential Election of 1984 and points out how the media focused more attention on the horse-race, on the latest polls and on the question of who will win at the expense of covering where each candidate actually stood on the issues and whether those positions were wise or foolish. Hertsgaard correctly points out how such attention on trivia rather than issues does a disservice to the audience and, ultimately, the politicians themselves.
Many of the book's subjects are still hot topics of political conversation today. The blurring of news and entertainment. The fact that more news outlets are owned by fewer and fewer companies and individuals. The timidity of a press, terrified at the thought of doing anything that might be considered "liberal". Still important issues, this is where many of them had their beginnings.
Unfortunately, such reporting is commonplace nowadays. I'd love to see a follow-up from Hertsgaard written today, analyzing the trends he first noted here. It would probably be a depressing and predictable read, but it would have to be an important one. ON BENDED KNEE may be discussing events of twenty years ago, but the points he raises still have resonance today.

The Blessing Of A Skinned Knee: Using Jewish Teachings to Raise Self-Reliant Children Review

The Blessing Of A Skinned Knee: Using Jewish Teachings to Raise Self-Reliant Children
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I just finished this last night, and I plan to go back through it again. It's one of the better books on raising children that I've ever read. Mogel is a child psychologist with a definite slant--for her, a lot of the answers to parenting problems lie in encouraging spiritual growth, in ourselves and in our children. You don't have to be Jewish to find great material in this book--I'm not--but you definitely need to accept the premise that human beings are happier in a spiritually enriched environment.

I have already started implementing some of Mogel's suggestions for fostering responsibility in children and encouraging them to be grateful for what they have (as opposed to constantly needing more to be satisfied). Moreover, I mean to stay mindful of her emphasis on a parent's need to accept a child's basic nature. If you can name the personality trait in your child that drives you insane, Mogel says, you have already named his greatest strength. Helping to raise him to his greatest potential involves teaching him how to utilize his nature, not how to subvert it. Unlike some modern psychological parenting texts, _The Blessing of a Skinned Knee_ doesn't pretend that children are blank slates to be filled with whatever we please. Instead, Mogel offers practical suggestions for working with the material we're given.
One of the elements of the book that I would most share with my friends involves discipline. Mogel breaks down transgressions by intent and offers concrete ways to deal with them compassionately and calmly. She several times references Biblical exhortations to discipline--not in a pro-spanking stance, but in reminding parents that this is a responsibility that comes with the territory. I wish that some of the more stern parents of my acquaintance would read her arguments against shaming children. Mogel does not believe that discipline requires humiliation. Those who swing the other way--me included--could benefit from her section on restitution. My 8-year-old suffers an overly developed sense of guilt, and I am hoping that following her suggestions for restitution will allow him to feel a healthy sense of closure and relief.
While every reader of books of this type needs to exercise discretion in determining what will work in his or her household, there's a lot of solid advice here. It doesn't address every situation or every concern, and I don't believe it intends to. What it does is provide a framework for a new way of thinking about parenting which might be useful when you encounter those situations not covered.
