This book includes the latest (I try to keep up on my own) research and evidence about the most effective exercise and physical rehabilitation procedures. Even though it is tagged for the aging, it is appropriate for younger adults to read in order to prevent problems that they may be starting to accumulate now, such as what is really going on when one is slumping at the computer, sleeping on the stomach side, walking on stairs, etc.
I learned a lot about how bones and joints move, age, strengthen, and respond to various stresses from different intensities and durations. The author emphasizes correct biomechanical movement as prevention and cure for many, but not all, injuries and skeletal ailments.
I figured out the cause and cure of two ailments of mine from this $17.00 book. Although it can be dangerous to self-diagnose, the author's cautious movement retraining advice is helping me.
The friendly no-ego writing style, diagrams and photos are very helpful also.
The only thing I'm surprised at was that the author didn't include forward planks and push-ups as part of an exercise program.

Coffee-Break Pilates: 5-Minute Routines You Can Do Anywhere to Tone Your Body, Relieve Stress, and Boost Your Energy Review

Coffee-Break Pilates: 5-Minute Routines You Can Do Anywhere to Tone Your Body, Relieve Stress, and Boost Your Energy
Average Reviews:

This is an excellent book for anyone who is just beginning to exercise and/or is out of shape. It is simple and gentle on the new-comer so it does not leave one discouraged. I noticed improvement in my posture almost immediately. I also felt my muscles were more balanced (some had been very tight from over-use and others had seldom been used at all). There is also a "dance" perspective: grace and balance. And most of all I think I have benefitted from being "oxygenated" and "stretched". The book emphasizes breathing and concentrating. Concentrating helps alleviate boredom for those of us who find exercising kind of dull. My suggestion: Buy some CD like "Ocean Dreams" to go with your little exercise session and it will almost seem "spiritual" because you will feel betterafterwards. This book is very practical, and I find myself now applying some of these Pilates principals of exercise throughout my day...even when I am at work.

The Stark Reality of Stretching: An Informed Approach for All Activities and Every Sport Review

The Stark Reality of Stretching: An Informed Approach for All Activities and Every Sport
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
If you're looking for a lot of background on muscle physiology or a very specific method of stretching this book might interest you, but if you're looking for a good selection of stretches, you should be aware that you only get 6 stretches here. I found the title a little misleading, since "every sport" would seem to include tennis, baseball and swimming, but this book only addresses lower body flexibility. If you want to stretch your arms, back, shoulders, etc, you're out of luck here.
I also found it annoying that the author promotes his personal stretching theory while using outdated studies to discredit other methods. For example, he uses studies from the early 70s to prove that PNF stretching is bad for you when the PNF stretching theories in use right now were not even developed at the time of the studies. Seemed like he was selectively choosing among the available research to prove his point while disregarding accepted theories that don't bolster his own method.

Essential Yoga: An Illustrated Guide to Over 100 Yoga Poses and Meditations Review

Essential Yoga: An Illustrated Guide to Over 100 Yoga Poses and Meditations
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Essential Yoga is an excellent guide to the novice student looking to expand their yoga practice. This book covers the Pranayama (Breathing Ch.1), Asanas (Warm ups Ch.2 Poses Ch.3), Dhyana (Meditations Ch.4) and Vinyasas (Flowing Poses Ch. 5) as well as Recommend Sequences (Ch. 6 & 7). It omits other stages of yoga such as Yamas and Niyamas, Pratyahara, Dharana, and Samadhi which would give the beginner a fuller picture of yoga. However, the authors state this book is for "someone who wants to do yoga and not just read about it".
Overall, I really enjoyed the graphics, general appearance, and construction of the book. This one seems to be well built in its lay-flat format which is good when you find yourself on the mat. The choice of yellow header may be hard for some readers since it does not reflect strongly against the white pages. The red text and graphics do appear well but the text might be small for some readers.
There are some very good breathing exercises (Ch.1) for more advance students of yoga. Usually, advance techniques like these are introduced to the novice student after becoming well versed in poses and basic breathing techniques.
The Asanas (Ch.2 & 3) have nice graphics of the postures with modifications. I liked the Sanskrit Names under the English Names of the poses. The benefits of each pose are presented in the beginning but no warnings which should have been included. The descriptions for getting into the posture are minimal which is nice since you want the basics to spend more time doing them, which is fine for the more advance yoga practioner but beginners might feel somewhat lost.
The Meditations (Ch. 4) were wonderful. The explanations were fantastic and the descriptions were very solid. It really allows the reader to visualize and affirm the thoughts during the meditation. I really enjoyed them.
The Vinyasas (Ch. 5) are described very well and the artwork was clean and crisp. It is nice to see a yoga book include more than the basic Sun Salutation. However, the poses didn't have their page numbers next to them to help the user reference them which seems odd because later in the book they are there for the Chapters Yoga Sessions and Recommended Sequences. No big deal, but the omissions itself is quirky.
The Yoga Sessions and Recommended Sequences (Ch. 6 & 7) are basically designed for students that allow them to work on specific conditions, goals, such as athletic improvements or time constraints. The poses do have corresponding page numbers for quick reference if you are rusty on certain poses. Beginners might be discouraged by this since they would be flipping back and forth too many times.
Beginners should always find a good teacher to start learning yoga. This allows the teacher to answer questions and make adjustments for them to get the maximum benefit from their yoga practice, then progress to books, videos, and retreats as ways to supplement their yoga practice.
Bottom line, this book would make a nice addition to your yoga library and give you some nice inspiration to help expand your yoga practice.

Post-Pregnancy Pilates: An Essential Guide for a Fit Body After Baby Review

Post-Pregnancy Pilates: An Essential Guide for a Fit Body After Baby

As a Certified Pilates Instructor, I recommend this book to all of my clients who are mothers (recent or not so recent). They love that it is easy to read and understand. From a trainer's perspective this is important for motivation and the ability to stick with a program that needs to be squeezed in between feeding time and bath time. Adamany -based on her own personal experience - covers the absolute fundamental basics needed to re-discover the core muscles that are so abused during pregnancy and delivery. Once some abdominal awareness is regained, she does a great job progressing the reader through more challenging exercise sequences while also leaving room for "quick-fix" exercises, say a simple neck or lower back stretch. Please enjoy!

From Head to Toe Board Book Review

This is a fantastic book! The large, colorful pictures and the simple, clear text keep children bending and stretching right along with the animals! Still, unlike many of the reviewers who loved this for their one-year-olds, we found that this book didn't work for my active, not very verbal daughter when she was one (even though she sat for other books). We pulled it out again around the time she turned 2 and she LOVED IT. This book was a huge hit. Now at almost 4 it is still one of her favorites. Even if she's tired at bedtime she gets on the floor to do her donkey kicks along with the donkey! My older daughter also reported that this was one of her preschool teacher's favorite storytime books.I would say that for many children this book, despite it's deceptively simple pictures and text, is more appropriate for older children (age 2-4). This is a book I buy all the time for 2nd birthdays - It's always a hit! (especially good for active kids who prefer being "active" listeners!)This is an excellent choice for a book that will last kids for years!
