Very interesting book full of well written details, not for the faint at heart. A must read for anyone who has been curious about where their "donations" go as well as for anyone thinking about going into the business. Included is a rebuttal by the author to the many articles written. Smart, straight forwarded, and at times humorous. A definite read, and a great discussion book.

Saw this item suggested while looking for other books and the reviews were good so I purchased it. Was very disappointed in most of the stories. Some of the stories just lacked a climatic ending. Came across one story that was fantastic, involved some roleplaying and was funny and erotic. The story was leading to an amazing climatic ending when the plane the characters were on crashed and burned. Talk about a let down. Just not the spanking book for me.

excellent review of the mechanics, history of the development of the Oxford knee and clinical results.

This book traces the 30 year development by surgeons and engineers in Oxford of a unique method of unicompartmental knee replacement with the 'Oxford Knee' prosthesis. The challenge to the surgeon is to replace the damaged surfaces of the arthritic joint so effectively that the soft tissues of the whole joint and the surfaces of the other compartments can resume all their physiological functions, a more difficult task than total knee replacements confront. As a user's guide, the book allows the surgeon to gain a good understanding of the biomechanics of the normal knee, of the pathological anatomy of unicompartmental arthritis, and the rationale of the design of instruments and implants. The outcome of the operation depends greatly on choice of the right patient and exact implantation of the prosthesis, subjects that are dealt with exhaustively. The reader can use this book as an adjunct to the implant specific instructional courses available. The book also provides long-term data on wear and revision rates for the Oxford Knee and covers common questions asked and the problems confronted by users. The book is accompanied by a DVD with animations of mathematical models of the intact and replaced knee, as well as full video footage of a knee replacement operation.

This is a good book for children of all ages. I bought this book sixteen or seventeen years ago and really enjoyed reading it to my son as well as my friends and family. It is about being positive and cooperative, the very premise of good manners. The characters are funny and the lessons valuable. The point of the lessons make perfect sense and once learned by a child, carry him or her through life with a smile. Grumpy, negative adults need to read this more than children.

Airlift to Wounded Knee Review

Airlift to Wounded Knee

I read this book as part of an assignment in American History in College. Mr. Zimmerman provides a concise, accurate, and painful history of U.S. dealings with Native Americans from European arrival on this continent until the Wounded Knee takeover in 1973. Not only did this book challenge me into political activism and participation in all civil rights movements, it changed forever my willingness to take the U.S. Government at it's word.
This book is a must read for anyone trying to understand the Civil Rights Movement, the Government's attempt to quelch such movements, and the real execution of due process in the United States.

Alexander the Fabulous: The Man Who Brought the World to Its Knees Review

Alexander the Fabulous: The Man Who Brought the World to Its Knees
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
An excellent text to accompany the Oliver Stone movie, "Alexander," this book is astonishingly well-researched and written by Michael Alvear with assistance from Vicky Shecter, who is now working on a children's book about Alexander the Great.
If you laugh out loud at David Sedaris books, this book may remind you of what a serious ancient history book would be like if David Sedaris had written it. It is a laugh a minute. Yet, the basic facts provided are correct. This book just makes it FUN to learn a bit of history that most people (even in Greece!) know far too little about.
I am a public librarian, and have read at least 12 books on Alexander the Great in the past six months. What one inevitably finds when researching Alexander is that his life is hotly debated by many differing factions: Should he be called Macedonian or Greek? Should he be called bisexual or gay? Should he be hailed as a hero and liberator or condemned as a mass murderer? Was he buried in Alexandria or someplace else? Did he have a part in killing his father or not? You can forget about finding a book that makes EVERYONE happy, though the best overall book I have found is Robin Lane Fox's "Alexander the Great" published in 1986 by Penguin Books. I believe it stands head and shoulders over any other book on Alexander, and every public library MUST have that book. Oliver Stone chose Robin Lane Fox to be his historical consultant for the film "Alexander." I would avoid the new book by Paul Cartledge even though it is new; the Robin Lane Fox book simply covers so much more and does it so much better. Also, the account of Alexander's travels by Arrian is a must.
Every library needs sources on Alexander, however, for those who may not care to read the serious history texts. Mary Renault's "Persian Boy" is outstanding for fiction readers, and her other books on Alexander, especially "The Nature of Alexander," are also excellent. But for those who want to really have FUN as they learn their history, you just can't beat Michael Alvear's "Alexander the Fabulous."
Anyone who is terribly homophobic may not like this book, but then again, anyone who is terribly homophobic is not likely to be reading about Alexander the Great anyway. After Jesus Christ, Alexander may be the most influential human to ever live, and there should be as many books about his life in our libraries as possible. The fact that he was gay or bisexual should not be a reason for not providing a book about his extraordinary life.
Don't miss this great book! You will be ever so glad you found it!

He conquered the known world. He united it for the first time with a common language. His military tactics are still being studied-and used-by today's warriors. He is considered the most courageous and heroic warrior in history. But (and more importantly): He was hot. His boyfriends were hotter. He could throw hissy fits that would take Liza Minelli's breath away. He traveled with an advance publicity team. He was so vain, if Preparation H had existed, his enemies would have rubbed it on his ego. He had fag hags hanging off him like laundry. We're approaching 2,350 years after his death and people are still fascinated by Alexander the Great. Even Socrates, Plato and Aristotle, the people who gave us language, math and philosophy, didn't have Oliver Stone making movies about them. All the great conquerors that followed Alexander tried to emulate him-Julius Caesar, Napoleon, Jeff Striker. Michael Alvear presents a most unusual biography of history's greatest warrior.

Michael Alvear is a syndicated columnist whose commentary has been heard on NPR. He is the author of Men Are Pigs, But We Love Bacon.

The Knee Sourcebook Review

The Knee Sourcebook
Average Reviews:

I'm really dependent on the reviews here at Amazon when I select a book, so I don't know why I ordered this book when there were no reviews. Perhaps I can save others some money by saying that there are far better books on knee pain than this one. I actually found more information by doing a Google search for "knee pain". The section on exercise, which in the one part of the book which should be most relevent, is no more than a few pages long. The author lists several exercises in brief, and there are no photos or illustrations to show the exercises. Even stranger, there are NO stretches. I find it hard to understand how this book even came to be published. I wish that I'd been able to go to a bookstore to compare books and select the one that best met my needs, but thankfully I ordered "Knee Pain" by John Garrett, MD, at the same time that I ordered "The Knee Sourcebook" . It has two full chapters on exercises with photos, shows stretches, and has a full variety of exercises to strengthen all the muscles surrounding and supporting the knee.

I first read this book in manuscript form (I don't work in publishing; I simply borrowed it), which means I read hundreds of unbound, unwieldy pages. I started sitting on a bench in Central Park, killing time before an appointment; I finished hours later, sitting on that same bench, reading by streetlight (parklight?), my appointment rescheduled. I bought the hardcover, but I'm saving my copy of the manuscript -- Knee Deep in Wonder is one of the first great novels of the century. No kidding. It's that good.

The Politics of Hallowed Ground: Wounded Knee and the Struggle for Indian Sovereignty Review

The Politics of Hallowed Ground: Wounded Knee and the Struggle for Indian Sovereignty
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
What first strikes this reader is the very frank and engrossing personal narrative, as well as the description of the on-going political struggle of the Sioux in their battle for the return of the Black Hills in South Dakota. The diary entries of lawyer Mario Gonzales and the commentaries of Elizabeth Cook-Lynn gave me an opportunity to re-think important events in Sioux and American history over the past century (including Custer and the Little Big Horn, the Wounded Knee Massacre of 1890, and others). The authors also show very clearly how these linked histories continue to influence the actions of individuals (white or Indian) and governments today. Cook-Lynn is especially deft at evaluating the political, economic, and racial motivations of the various stakeholders, from the factions within different Sioux tribes, the governors and congressmen, federal agencies, to the white landowners. The centerpiece of the book is the fight by the Sioux for the return of the Black Hills (preserved for the tribes by treaty in 1868), as well as the related fight for a monument to the Sioux massacred by government troups at Wounded Knee. But as the story unfolds, it became a means for me to understand the treaty rights and sovereign rights of not just the Sioux but other Indian nations in this country. Gonzales relates details of the legal battles and community struggles, and shows an amazing persistence and courage in his pursuit of justice for the Sioux. I hope that other readers come away from this book with as strong a sense as I did: of our need to resolve these ethical and legal dilemmas by recognition of Indian treaty rights and sovereignty. I'm grateful to the authors for their frank discussions of the real difficulties inherent in this task, and for outlining the rewards to all of us if they succeed.

The powerful story of the ongoing struggle of indigenous Americans in 20th-century United States and of its shift in focus from traditional battlefield and massacre sites to federal courtrooms and the halls of Congress. Mario Gonzalez has served as attorney for the Sioux Nation and Elizabeth Cook-Lynn is a Native American writer. Together their two voices will draw the reader into the continuing struggle of the Sioux people to achieve justice.

My 18 month old picks this book up and leafs through it herself, she loves the pictures of baby Natasha and likes the baby sounds that Natasha makes when I read the book to her. She imitates the sounds "da da and ma ma, this is my daddy and this is my mommy" for example. She usually prefers "lift the flap books" but sits through the entire reading of this cute book about the life of a baby. Simple but enjoyable, good illustrations.

In the Knees of the Gods: Poems Review

In the Knees of the Gods: Poems
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Trish Reeves, In the Knees of the Gods (BkMk Press, 2001)
BkMk press (the name, if you ever wondered, is short for "bookmark") have been wandering through the American literary landscape for a very long time now ("very long time," of course, being a relative term in the small press world) publishing unheralded books that never fail to be small pleasures when I stumble upon one at a library book sale (one does not find worthwhile poetry in used bookstores in the main, or so fifteen years of haunting them told me). The most recent BkMk book to find its way to my desk is Trish Reeves' In the Knees of the Gods. And "small pleasure" defines it almost perfectly.
In the Knees of the Gods seems to have multiple personality disorder. Blurbing on the back, David Ray says "...this poet seems to alternate between letting it all out and not spelling it out." Indeed. One wonders, amused, why such a levelheaded critique would be considered a blurb. I'd fire my publisher, or force them to fire the person who let it through. But then, I'm not on BkMk. David Ray, however, is entirely correct, and it shouldn't surprise anyone that the book's strongest points are when Reeves doesn't spell anything out, letting the simplicity of the pieces be their own power, while the book's weakest passages (which are, thankfully, concentrated in one section) are when she spends far too much time spelling out, overwhelming the power of the words themselves with artificially imposed meaning and message. Poetry is like beef; the closer you get to organic, the better it's going to be. Reeves spends most of her time allowing the words to speak for themselves, and writing very good poetry because of it. When she does the poetry-as-therapy thing, though, the book falls apart. That, however, is only temporary. It gets back on track and stays there.
Recommended. Just skip over section II until you've digested the rest. ***

Clay Jones's artistic talent, mixed with his witty and thought-provoking commentary is the recipe for a classic collection of toons that represent all that is the quintessential deep-south. Catch not only a glimpse into the muddy backwater of Mississippi state and local politics, but also a sidelong glance at national figures and issues. "Captain Kirk" lampoons Mississippi governor Kirk Fordice, while "Confederacy of Dunces" satirizes Mississippi's legislature, which makes an editorial cartoonist's job easy with "suspect politicians, a regressive tax system, and constant schemes to raise their own pay." Other chapters including "Sports," "Daze of Our Lives," and "Life with Bill" prove to be consistently funny and insightful.
