What a rare treat to find a text that I would atually feel comfortable using in the classes I teach both at the Univerisity and at the dance studio. As Vice-President of the UCWDC (an international competitive dance arena) in charge of judge certification, I am a stickler for proper technique, and Melissa is a Master. Her book and video are clear and concise with emphasis on those principles that will make your dancing easy, fun and technically correct. Whether you are a beginner wanting a firm foundation on which to build or a more experienced dancer wanting those tips that will help you improve, you will not do wrong with Melissa's book. She writes clearly and, more importantly, accurately. A talented and versatile dancer, she is able to capture the essence of good technique in her book. A "must have" for all students of dance.

Swimming: Steps to Success Review

Swimming: Steps to Success

After 10 years of failed attempts at learning to swim, this book did the trick.
Excellent step by step approach builds confidence and avoids the "just do it" leap that is so hard to make.
Each step begins with the why and the what. These are followed by drills that gradually put all the parts together. The drills are very well thought out, you are learning all the time, and you never get pushed out to the ragged edge where it all falls apart.
Thank you David Thomas!

Lecture Notes on Orthopaedics and Fractures (Lecture Notes Series) Review

Lecture Notes on Orthopaedics and Fractures (Lecture Notes Series)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This book is hardly recomended anymore because the latest edition is over ten years old. The book is very easy to read, which is its best attribute. It covers both general and regional orthopaedic, but fails to go in any depths in either areas. Some of the themes covered seems quite random, and the treatment selected is outdated at times.
The book is unnecessary for students, as it doesn't offer answers to the (few) questions one might have while preparing for the finals. It is likewise unnecessary for the resident because it is too superficial and too random in its choice of themes. The second star is because it is so easy to read, you finnish it in a couple of days (mainly beacause most of the information is already known to you). You'd be better off with a different book (Ronald McRaes Practical Fracture Treatment, for instant).

What a great way to use your time in the office during those one hour phone calls. I have the book on my desk so I can strike a pose or two while I listen to people talk. The Complete Idiot's Guide to Yoga Illustrated, Third Edition Review

The Complete Idiot's Guide to Yoga Illustrated, Third Edition
Average Reviews:

I read the Complete Idiot's Guide to Yoga over a year ago. I have found myself practicing yoga faithfully and referring to the book ever since. The book gives a wonderful overview of this centuries old practice. I particularly liked the book for the authors' humor and openmindedness. As can be found in their other book, Complete Idiot's Guide to Meditation. All the information needed to start practicing yoga today is provided without making the reader feel as though they must change religions or make other drastic changes in their lives. Facts and ideas are presented in such a way that the reader can take as little or as much from the book as he wants.
I found the explainations of postures, breathing exercises and other yoga aspects to be clear and detailed (enough for a beginner). I was particularly impressed with the instructions for the postures as modifications are included. A lot of books don't do that. The book is truly an introduction to yoga - there is so much more to be learned. In fact, it has lead me to read many other wonderful books about yoga. As well as research yoga on web sites listed in the book (including Joan Budilovsky's site - wonderful, & you actually get answers to your letters).
The CIGY offers an EXCELLENT place to begin. I have recommended this book to several friends who have asked me about my yoga practice. I would recommend it again and again.

OM Yoga: A Guide to Daily Practice Review

OM Yoga: A Guide to Daily Practice
Average Reviews:

I love this book! I take a weekly class, but this book gave me the tools to incorporate yoga into my daily schedule. The routines are short (15 minutes or so, though you can make them longer if you want to), there's variety so each day focuses on different challenges, and everything's well explained.
My favorite features are: 1. there's a single-glance spread of the day's poses (no flipping while you're doing the routine!) as well as detailed drawings/descriptions of each pose so you can check your form, 2. the spiral binding, which makes it easy to lie open flat and flip as needed, 3. there are 'variations' of the more difficult poses, so it truly can be used by beginners and more advanced practitioners, and 4. it isn't overly wordy - just practical and straightforward.
If you're interested in trying yoga out, take the occasional class, or are just looking for a new way to approach your practice, TRY THIS!!

As a relatively new Yogi, reading "The No Om Zone" has really helped to improve my practice. It provides a level of instruction that can often be hard to get in a packed yoga class. It is chockfull of photos that have been very useful in understanding the exact positioning of each body part during a pose. I feel my alignment has definitely improved since reading the book. Also, anatomy and physiology are discussed in a very useful, easy-to-understand manner, not in the cumbersome, overwhelming way of many fitness books. Lastly, as an Executive with a very hectic schedule, the 8 minute workout routines are a godsend!

The Men's Health Gym Bible Review

The Men's Health Gym Bible
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The topics covered in the book are wide ranging and informative but the editing in some parts leave little to be desired. For example, in chapter 13 on the Muscle-Building Workout, the instructions and the actual layout of the workouts don't coincide. The instructions say the leg workouts should be done as straight sets but in workout B, the first two leg exercises are listed as A1 and A2, suggesting a superset. Also, the instructions explained the workouts as upper body/lower body, upper body /lower body but the 1st upper body workout includes the Bulgarian Split Squat and the 2nd upper body workout includes Cable Pull Through, both leg movements. The 2nd upper body workout also has Lateral Raise as part of an arm tri-set. I'm guessing it should've been in the shoulder portion instead, where it shows a superset of Hang Clean and DB Shoulder Press.
Other errors I noted were the illustrations of the various machines. The Seated Calf Raise on page 212 looks an awful lot like a Preacher Curl Machine to me and is that really a 45 degree Leg Press Machine on page 208? On page 282, that doesn't look like a Glute Hame Raise Machine. There are others but you get the idea.
There's a lot of good information in this book but unfortunately, the editing mistakes may leave novice lifters confused about what machines they're actually looking at in their gym and whether they're conducting their exercises in the proper order.

Change Your Age: Using Your Body and Brain to Feel Younger, Stronger, and More Fit

The lessons in this book are easy to do and can bring great relief, if you are suffering from back pain, as I do.
The few photographs in the book can be helpful if you are not sure how to interpret the written instructions.
In gnerenal, however, this book has two major flaws:
1. it should not be a book, but an audio instruction; that is how "awareness through movement" is typically taught.
There is no way a normal human being could memorize all the instructions of a single lesson and then "just do it".
To interrupt your lession to take a look at the book is not a good alternative. It would also interrupt the flow of your awareness and overall body experience.
So, what I did is I recorded the session in MP3 format. Something, I shouldn't have to do. The book should come with a CD or MP3 downloads.
2. There is no way you can do these lessons properly unless you have had a few sessions of Feldenkrais "Awareness Through Movement" with a good instructor. A good instructor would guide you to do everthing with less effort and more awareness. If you come from a "no pain, no gain" mindset, there is no way you could adjust to this different way of doing lessons without guidance.
If you have taken those two hurdles you are in for some great body experience. I have been doing these lessons for the last 3 or 4 weeks and I am looking forward to doing them every morning.

The S Factor: Strip Workouts for Every Woman Review

The S Factor: Strip Workouts for Every Woman
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The book is very well laid-out. It starts with detailed stretches for every muscle group and then goes into some simple floor work. The floor work is very derivative of yoga and Pilates, but with an erotic twist, of course. Floor work is especially good for the abs, but it also works your shoulders, arms, and legs.
After that, it moves on to wall work and some other standing moves. These focus more on your legs, but fear not, your abs are still involved. Then there's a section on pole work, which is great for upper-body strength and burning calories - IF YOU HAVE A POLE IN YOUR HOUSE. I, for one, do not, so I just looked at the pretty pictures and sighed wistfully. Fear not, though - you can buy a stripper pole for your living room if you're so inclined, and if you have $300 just lying around begging to be spent.
Towards the end, there are various routines for you to use once you get accustomed to the individual exercises. There's also a small list of resources for buying exotic dancewear, poles, etc.
All in all, this book was well worth the $15 I spent on it. I can't stress how awesomely detailed each exercise is, with clear photos for each step. And for more advanced exercises, she offers a detailed beginner's alternative until your muscles are ready for the advanced move. Score! Plus, the exercises are fun, sexy, and guaranteed to strengthen your muscles.
On the negative side, Kelley likes to dis strippers and strip clubs - a LOT. I understand that she's probably doing it so that the soccer-mom housewives won't consider themselves "dirty" and "obscene" if they buy this book and do the exercises, but still. Lay off the exotic dancers, eh? She can also be very cheesy in her between-section monologues. On a few occasions, I read something that made me want to bang my head against the wall.
All in all, I recommend this book to anyone who like yoga and Pilates but is looking for something a little more intriguing. And, if you're into fun cardio and have the cash to burn on a pole, I would doubly recommend this book to you.

Hipper than Taebo, sexier than Pilates, The S Factor--stripping--is the hottest new fitness trend. Created by actress Sheila Kelley (LA Law, Sisters, and a host of film and Broadway roles), S-Factor classes are wildly popular and generating an avalanche of attention from Extra, Entertainment Tonight, The Los Angeles Times, Allure, Us magazine, Fox News, and CBS's 48 Hours, which proclaimed: "Women don't even know they're working out until two months later when they say, 'I've never had a better body in my life. I'm strong, I'm limber, I feel great.'" Sheila even convinced Barbara Walters to try a pole dance on The View.No wonder. Combining yoga, dance, and erotic movements, The S Factor is a program that tones muscle, firms the body, increases flexibility, promotes weight loss, and gives you a few new tricks for the bedroom. Illustrated in hundreds of photographs that show step by step how each move is done, the exercises are sensual yet demanding, requiring a balance of strength and finesse. There are slow, rounded warm-ups, the Spine Circles and Hip Circles. Strenuous motions, like the Rocking Cat-Cow. Peels and rolls, grinds, pounces, arches. And pole work, from the Firefly to Descending Angel.Something else happens, too: These exercises and routines boost self-esteem and give women a new way to think about their bodies. Stripping is a liberating act, out of which comes a new look, new body, new confidence, new you.
