The Guard (Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Details and Techniques) Review

The Guard (Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Details and Techniques)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Having thoroughly read Volume 1: 'Passing the Guard' (and still working on it, daily), I awaited Volume 2 eagerly. Beneville had teamed up with Tim Cartmell for the first book and has done even better here, documenting some of the game of the legendary Joe Moreira.
Moreira is a deserved 7th Degree Black belt and Beneville (also now a black belt) is an articulate and logical author with an eye for detail.
The book uses the same revolutionary format as 'Passing the Guard'. White vs Blue photos, re-illustrated photos to show details and fantstic descriptions of techniques and details. The details is the area that sets this book apart from the others. The detail explanations are better than you see on most video presentations!
The book starts with 'Fundamantals' and details one and two man drills for improving movement skills and makes examples of their applications. Then, it moves immediately into guard pass counters and defenses. This demonstrates techniques and principles to defeat the most common passes. It lines up really well with Volume 1, here, too.
From here, there is a section on basic chokes. Quite basic, in fact. However, I guarantee you'll find details you didn't know, or at least forgot.
From there, it's sweeps. Sweeps get the same basic treatment as chokes, with the little details that will make your game better. Each technique works well together and weaves into a game. The details serve to explain when to attempt the sweeps in terms of mechanics, as well.
Armlocks against stacking is an important, rarely covered topic and it gets its own chapter, here. From this section, I got immediate benefit, as I have long sought to counter this basic defense. As a result, the games of others who roll with me are changing to not rely on stacking as a passing method. An example of ongoing benefit.
My favourite two sections of the book are next. They deal with attacking good posture. The first is on the upright posture and the second on the "stalling" or "control" posture. This is another of those sections with "a-ha" moments for me. These sections detail intricately how to attack those with good base and posture. These sections are worth more than the purchase price, alone.
The next part is on "Flowing Attack" and details a series of techniques meant to work together to become part of your game. Do I need to mention the details demonstrated, here? I guess not. But they are there and that's what separates this from other books.
The next section on neck control is another rarely covered topic. It shows how to manipulate the opponent's position to improve yours - all by controlling the neck. Moreira, for the most part controls the head and neck in various ways before popping out to the back or the quarter position to finish a series of armlocks, crucifixes and chokes.
The backroll is then covered. Usually treated as a last resort to a stacking pass, Moreira and Beneville show how to turn a bad situation into an attacking one by going back over the shoulder and recovering guard, scoring the takedown or attacking with a submission.
Lastly, is "Snake Knees and Standup". In this section, the authors concentrate on coming to the knees or feet in base. Everyone knows this movement (you do know the movement, don't you?), but most will not know the true attacking value of the movement until they read this book. Again, it's one of those techniques usually used as a last-ditch defence.
All-in-all, this is probably the only book that surpasses Volume 1. In fact, it's the only book in the same league. I enjoy the Gracie / Kid Pelligro type books for the information presented and insight they give. However, none come close to the details and presentation of this book, let alone the sheer volume of information.
Beneville should be selling this book for a lot more than its price tag (The amount of work in this book is astounding). And everyone involved in the grappling arts should be purchasing it - regardless of level.
I know there's material for years here for me.

The Guard is the quintessential Brazilian Jiu Jitsu position. Other martial arts assume that once someone is on their back that the fight is over. But that assumption is unfounded. Fights don't end just because they hit the ground. For the jiu jitsu man the fight has only just begun. The Guard is a detailed analysis of core concepts, details, and techniques key to success for ground fighting.Author Joe Moreira reveals secrets of his guard technique developed and refined over his thirty five years studying and teaching martial arts. In this volume he shares the fundamentals of his jiu jitsu, the specific details needed to make it work, and technique ranging from beginning to advanced. The philosophy in this book and of Moreira teaching style is that it is better to understand groups of moves/options from given positions, than isolated moves. This is an exposition of sequences of moves from specific situations, not a collection of random moves. The Guard shows not only how to attack or defend from a position but also how to respond to an opponent's likely reactions.Continuing in the model of Grappling Arts Publications first volume, Passing the Guard, The Guard provides a revolutionary approach in its visual presentations. Techniques are shown from multiple angles. Key points are illustrated. Photo sequences are laid out in intuitive easy to follow patterns.

Balance on the Ball Review

Balance on the Ball
Average Reviews:

This book is great for working out on your own with the ball. It gives very clear directions, and even lets you know what muscle groups you are targeting so that you can really focus on getting the most out of each exercise. This is the best ball book that I have bought (I also have Pilates on the Ball, which is good but this one is better).

Click Here to see more reviews about: Balance on the Ball

Balance on the Ball combines the smooth, controlled movements of Pilates with the instability of a ball to provide a fun, challenging workout for people at all levels of fitness. Black-and-white photographs clearly illustrate over 100 exercises, focusing on core stabilization, muscle tone, and flexibility. Each exercise provides helpful tips for maintaining optimal form and alignment, modifications or advanced variations, and a list of muscle groups used. As the first book to integrate stability ball training with the Pilates method, Balance on the Ball explains how the principles of Pilates-breathing, concentration, centering, precision, control, movement flow and rhythm-are integral to exercising on the ball. The author emphasizes correct alignment and the quality of movement rather than the number of repetitions or speed at which they are performed. These essential concepts may be incorporated into the rest of your fitness routine, as well as into your daily life, for a greater sense of harmony and balance.

Unfortunately, this is the only book that deals with completely with the death of Anna Mae Aquash. Very informative and very disturbing at times, it will leave you demanding justice and wanting to know more. By itself, this book is slighlty incomplete. However, along with the absolutely necessary "In the Spirit of Crazy Horse" and along with the Anna Mae Aquash sites at Dickshovel.com, you will begin to truly appreciate the direness of the situation, even 25 years after Anna Mae's death. Peace be with you.

This book is in the category of "must have" for every Black Belt and dojo-dojang owner. The thorough coverage of pre-workout stretching, diet and injury care is something that senior belts in every school should know. While I learned much of the contents of the book in my years practicing Tae Kwon Do, this book makes a very good quick reference, with great pictures of just how to treat most of the common injuries.
Very highly recommended.

The Normal Christian Life Review

Watchman Nee takes the reader through principles taught in the book of Romans. The focus of the book is Jesus Christ and the believer's life in Him. At times Nee seems redundant and repetitive with his message and with his illustrations. But by the end, you thoroughly understand the concepts he presents. This book was an important key to my growth as a Christian. In my opinion, it should be a must read for every person serious about living a God honoring life.

The Breaking of the Outer Man and the Release of the Spirit Review

The Breaking of the Outer Man and the Release of the Spirit
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Unlike some people who lived it before they read it, or read it and never lived it, I had the good fortune to not have a clue about what Watchman Nee was talking about, and then finally seeing the picture for myself.
When I first started reading the book, I thought that he was just speaking out of his head. After all you don't really hear anybody speaking about this sort of thing now a days do you? Of course you don't, because a lot of ministers out there today, haven't been through the type of breaking that Watchman Nee describes in the book.
Myself among them at the time, I decided to just get it over and skim through it. And once I had left it alone, and the Lord began to work, dealing with me on some major issues, I learned that it was not my effort that counted, it was my openess to the Lord to be used as He desired.
And until I came to that point, as watchman Nee goes over in the book, of either opening up to the Lord, or being broken, I couldn't be used to do any ministry of real spiritual value. It took actually living the lesson for me to really appreciate how right on he was in this book.
Maybe when you get this book you will be like I was and think he's spouting from his mind. But let me tell you if you will accept it and ask the Holy Spirit to help you live it, it will change your life, in ministry, in relationships, and everything else. That is why I give it five stars. Not because I think it's the most well written book, but because I know from experience that what he talks about is true. And I pray that you get that revelation too.
In His Love,
RJJ

DO NOT BUY THIS BOOK. It has multiple errors in it. I don't know where to begin. I have written the editors several times without response. I have had to buy a back up book. Textbooks are very expensive, and I've had to buy 2 literally because this one has multiple errors (in pictures and type written info). Our instructor is compliling a list of errors to send to the editors, that's how bad it is. I highly recommend the Manual Muscle Testing by Daniels and Worthingham's. I am in school for physical therapy assistant. I would give this book 0 stars if it was allowed.

Sports Injuries (Biographies of Disease) Review

Sports Injuries (Biographies of Disease)

This book has been really helpful to me as an athlete. I don't have any background in medicine or anatomy. However, as a runner I have dealt with countless injuries to the feet, ankles, legs, knees, etc. Over time, I've been given lots of advice and suggestions on treatment of injuries. But this book has given me the how and why behind my injuries in addition to the how and why behind the treatment plans. It has been eye opening to me to better understand the mechanics of my body and how injuries affect those functions. I found this book to be written in a way that is very academic, yet easy for anyone to grasp.

Essential Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Review

I purchased this book to help me & my son learn more about BJJ. It has met all my expectations. It covers the history of BJJ, the physical & psychological benefits of martial arts, the belt system, then gets into basic positions and techniques. There are more detailed texts out there, but I prefer this book's organization and brevity. I skimmed several books before deciding on this one and feel confident I made the right choice. Expert instruction is, of course, preferred but this book makes a great companion reference.

Bury Me Standing: The Gypsies and Their Journey Review

Bury Me Standing: The Gypsies and Their Journey
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This book opens with a chapter on the great Romany poet, Papusza (born as Bronislawa Wajs), which appeared earlier in The New Yorker. As Fonseca tells us, Papusza wrote a long autobiographical ballad about hiding in the forests during World War II--"Bloody Tears: What We Went Through Under the Germans in Volhynia in the Years 43 and 44." Discovered by the Polish poet Jerzy Ficowski in 1949, Papusza also wrote of the Jewish experience and "the vague threat of the gadjikane" (non-Gypsy) world." But her 1987 death in Poland, where she had lived most of her life, went unnoticed.
That is an appropriate beginning, for this book is not academic anthropology--and it more than admirably explains, from the Roma point of view, what it means to live in a world that remains largely threatening to the Roma. The book is not uniformly complimentary. But Fonseca lived for a period with Roma families, learned their separate and distinct Romany language, traveled across Eastern Europe with them, observed the poverty-stricken ghettos and mud hovels in which the poorest made their beds. And one finds in her closeness to them a sympathy altogether lacking in many other works.
Fonseca writes of her own extensive experience, of course, but also refers to more than 140 scholars, including the fine work of Rom professor Ian Hancock and Jan Yoors. The latter likewise lived among Roma, albeit during the pre-war and World War II eras. She recounts the likely path that the Roma traveled from India to Europe, their centuries of enslavement, their high rate of illiteracy (and cultural reasons for it), their experience during the Holocaust, which the Roma appropriately term the Devouring--and the new generation of Rom leaders who hope to lead their people to a more productive and accepted role in European and world society.
For anyone who has ever wondered about the Rom--especially those wanting a portrait that moves beyond the stereotypes of literature and music like Carmen--this is a fine place to begin. Alyssa A. Lappen

The author is not a medical practitioner, but she does share with the reader her own experiences with the various natural approaches to alleviating joint pain. The book helped me realize I'd have to be responsible for my healing and figure out what works for me and what doesn't. I think it's important to check with the experts regarding medical advice, but I found her information a good source of ideas worth researching further.
My wrist pain was initially misdiagnosed as rheumatoid arthritis (due to a mix up with the blood work), which is why I picked up this book. Although we eventually discovered the mistake the physician had made and I was correctly diagnosed with carpal tunnel syndrome, I still found the information in this book helpful.
