I discovered Dr. Grelsamer's books last fall after undergoing an unnecessary knee arthroscopy that caused more pain and problems than before. If I had read Dr. Grelsamer's advice earlier, I could have avoided six months of trauma, but even so, Dr. Grelsamer's straightforward guidance and treatment suggestions have been critical to my present well-being. Characteristically candid and entertaining, Dr. Grelsamer explains in detail all the information readers need to know to make sensible decisions about hip and knee replacement surgery. He challenges routine testing techniques that contribute to diagnoses which are often misleading, and explains which controversial breakthroughs are safe and reliable, such as mini-incision surgeries and the latest implants. This book is a MUST READ for all active adults and teens. Thank you, Dr. Grelsamer, for giving us the tools and knowledge to be informed consumers!

When I first bought this book, about 2 years ago, I was already a fan of Raggedy Ann and Andy but I really wanted to introduces my then 3 year old niece to them. My niece and I really enjoyed the story and how Raggedy Ann and Andy and the Camel with the Wrinkled Knees worked so well together to find their friend, Babette. Also how they helped in getting the angry pirates to change to good. It has many good lessons in it which are good for all to learn. My niece is now a HUGE Raggedy Ann and Andy fan and loves all the stories. I am proud to say that I own this wonderful story.

Knitting Knee-Highs: Sock Styles from Classic to Contemporary Review

Knitting Knee-Highs: Sock Styles from Classic to Contemporary
Average Reviews:

I was worried because in many of the pictures, the socks are not really knee-high on the models, in fact on some they are barely mid-calf. I happily found out though, that the publisher picked mostly very tall models (6 ft) and of course the socks are short on them. All of the patterns are made for normal sized women so they look very odd on the long legged models. I'm glad I got the book. The patterns are lovely, and the directions for customized fit are good. If you like knee-socks, this is the book for you!

Do Penguins Have Knees? An Imponderables Book Review

Do Penguins Have Knees An Imponderables Book
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)

Feldman keeps producing these books of imponderables;and they just keep
getting better all the time. His books just go on asking questions and producing answers about those unlimited number of things we've all wondered about, and even many that we have come to accept as "that's just the way it is". Feldman encourages his readers to send in their own imponderables to answer ;much in the same way that Allan Funt did with Practical Jokes on "Candid Camera " and Robert Ripley did with his Oddities with his "Believe It or Not". I have been a fan of this sort of thing and their "stuff" has intrigued the curious, entertained the joker in us all and amazed all who are surprised to see the rare or unbelievable.
This is the type of book that can be left hanging around, and anybody who picks it up will become engrossed in it in no time at all. Many of the imponderables you'll read about are not earth shattering, won't make much difference in your life, but nevertheless grab your interest and provide enjoyable pastime entertainment.Maybe the time spent waiting at the Dentist's,Doctor's ,Barbers or any other waiting room would be a little less painful if books like this were available rather than those awful magazines.
Who wouldn't be interested in questions like these?
"Why do straws in drinks sometimes sink and sometimes rise to the
surface?"
"Why is Rhode Island called an island when it obviuosly isn't an
island."
"How did they keep beer cold in the saloons of the Old West?"
"Why are 25-watt light bulbs more expensive than 60-,75-,and 100-watt
bulbs?"
"Why do hospital gowns tie in the back?"
"What causes the green-tinged potato chips we sometimes find? Are they
safe to eat?"
And how about thisimponderable that never seems to die?
"Why are so many restaurants, especially diners and coffee
shops, obsessed with mating Ketchup bottles at the end of the day?
Believe It or Not,it prevents Explosions! Thats right!;you'll find out why, right here in this book!

8 Steps to a Pain-Free Back: Natural Posture Solutions for Pain in the Back, Neck, Shoulder, Hip, Knee, and Foot (Remember When It Didn't Hurt)

This is by far the single best source for healing back pain that I have seen. I hurt my lower back pretty badly doing heavy deadlifts after too long of a layoff (entirely my fault, I know), and pursued a wide variety of different treatment methods. I had previously been exposed to other postural/ alignment methodologies in an attempt to get rid of chronic injuries, which had been helpful, but nothing was as poignant, simple, or direct as Gokhale's work.
There are three outstanding aspects of this book:
1. Gokhale clearly identifies what ideal posture and alignment looks like, and backs this up with numerous photos.
2. Gokhale's method is very, very simple, and once learned, becomes integrated into your everyday life. I know of other methods where you have to spend 30-45 minutes per day doing exercises - this method requires very little extra bandwidth once you have learned it.
3. The book itself is beautifully laid out, with a balance between illustrative photos and explanations.
Considering the amount of time and money I've spent pursuing other treatment methods, this is a ridiculously good value. Don't discount it just because it is so inexpensive! I bought a copy for my parents, and two extra books as I constantly have them loaned out. If you are seeking to get rid of chronic pain, this is my #1 go-to recommendation.

Nearly 90% of American adults suffer from back pain, and the number continues to climb. Why does this condition affect so many people in the industrialized world, while in some countries only 5% of adults report back pain? In a quest to find the root cause of back pain, Esther Gokhale studied at the Aplomb Institute in Paris and traveled to parts of the world where back pain is virtually unknown. Her research took her to remote Burkina Faso, rural Portugal, and fishing villages in Brazil. What she learned in each of these places has changed the lives of thousands of people. Preserved in the movements of weavers, millers, and farmers in more traditional societies is ancient body wisdom that prevents pain and enhances health. For the first time, these insights have been brought together in a step-by-step guide designed to help those suffering from back pain re-educate their bodies and regain the posture for which our bodies evolved.

The Movement and The Sixties: Protest in America from Greensboro to Wounded Knee Review

The Movement and The Sixties: Protest in America from Greensboro to Wounded Knee
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I stumbled upon this wonderful book as a used book at the local bookshop, and was delighted to discover just how complete and accurate a description it renders of the virtual kaleidoscope of activities associated with what came to be called 'the movement" in what was likely the most turbulent and tumultuous decade of the 20th century; the nineteen sixties. Professor Terry Anderson delivers a yeoman historian's look at the details of how what began as a fairly narrowly circumscribed civil rights effort on behalf of American blacks was transformed into a far-more comprehensive and sometimes all-inclusive broadside social and cultural critique of mainstream American society. In this book, "The Movement and the Sixties", Anderson breathes considerable life & pointed animation into a cautionary tale many of us actually lived through some forty years ago.
Anderson finds the origins of the so-called movement in the civil rights movement originating in the Greensboro sit-in protests in 1960. Through meticulous research and impressive documentation, he traces how the combination of moral outrage, youthful energy, and the rapid economic changes transforming American society itself combined to create an almost unstoppable cultural force, one that literally brought millions of citizens into the streets into social activism, and in the process transformed almost every aspect of contemporary society, from race relations to sexual equality, from student activism to the cultural view on the war in Vietnam. This is indeed a penetrating effort that succeeds in meaningfully exploring the nature of the social history of the sixties generation, who dared to question the very nature of and validity surrounding the American social system. Anderson shows how the initial efforts of the civil rights activists eventually blossomed into a garden variety of different protest activities, most profoundly, of course, in connection with the war in Vietnam.
In the fullness of time, the coalition of different communities in this widely-supported anti-war effort led to the further flowering of cultural criticism into many other areas of the contemporary culture, from minority rights to the counterculture, from gay rights to feminism. In the process, an impressive array of important aspects of our society came to be more closely examined, and were subsequently criticized and attacked, ranging from elements such as corporate polluters, who were then attacked by the environmental movement, to the behavior of organizations like the FBI and CIA, who were revealed later to have committed a wide range of transgressions against American citizens, most of whom had done nothing wrong and who the federal agencies had no legal right to either spy upon, nor to harass, nor to smear in the mass media, all of which was done. Anderson covers the history of the era with precision and a plethora of evidence regarding how the events and individuals depicted made the history of the times, and how profoundly they influenced how life in this country changed forever as a result. Enjoy!

Wounded Knee: Party Politics and the Road to an American Massacre Review

Wounded Knee: Party Politics and the Road to an American Massacre
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
`Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee' has been the consummate book on the horrors of what the American Indian has suffered at the hands of the `white' immigrants into their land. Heather Richardson has expanded the story of the Wounded Knee Massacre in this book. It is a story that is more than racism. She explains how the massacre grew out of party politics and the profit driven media - whose stories exaggerated the danger that the Indian tribes posed. She makes a good case that business politics and newspaper sales drove much of what happened both at Wounded Knee and to all of the Indian tribes.
The west was at the heart of what the nation looked to as the ideal that it desired to become; but it was two worlds on a collision course. Many of the problems that existed have not changed to this day. Each political side was convinced that the other was trying to destroy America and helpless people were caught in the middle and left in a worse condition than ever before.
All of the social and political issues are explained, including what the societal order was becoming - an overwhelming disparity of wealth and greed. The Sherman family is used an example of those forging a life after the civil war; William Tecumseh, John and Charles, both in politics and in the army. The problem of slavery that was not only a moral issue, but the dilemma that free workers felt they could never compete against slaves is included in the descriptions of the political and economic climate.
The Ghost Dance and the Indian prophet Wovoka's part in the Wounded Knee massacre are covered. The steps that led up to the slaughter and the reasoning on both sides is given. She makes excellent and specific claims of the Indian grievances and the many attempts of the military men in trying to remedy the countless corrupt Indian agents. She brings up interesting points that are not often conveyed - how the military almost always sided against the political forces when it came to Indian affairs.
It is good to have the suggested reading list.; however the 18 page introduction is so thorough that it, in effect tells the story of the whole book; but to understand completely you need to read the chapters that follow. There are 16 pages of pictures and a detailed index.
This is one of the best versions of the politics of the west and the way life changed... most of all for the Indian nations. This would be of interest to anyone who wishes to learn more of American history and the social and political implications that changed our nation forever.

Bringing the Devil to His Knees: The Craft of Fiction and the Writing Life Review

Bringing the Devil to His Knees: The Craft of Fiction and the Writing Life
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I'd say the value of any book on writing can be based on its ability to instruct or inspire. Most people buying these kinds of books are looking for advice on how to be better writers, or simply the spark that'll get them started. (I'm not counting the thornier issue of publication.) This collection of talks/essays from the Warren Wilson MFA writing program includes the following:
"Omniscience," Russo -- Claims that the all-knowing third person narrator is the most mature and thereby most desirable literary perspective. A little pompous in places, but entertaining (like most of Russo's work) and almost convincing. 4/5
"Know Myself," Shepard -- Argues that epiphanies are the siren songs of literature: authors think they need them, but they ruin plots. A compelling essay, but mostly it's just an evaluative praise piece for Robert Stone's short story, "Helping." 4/5
"Iago," Neville -- A treatise on how evil (or Evil) is the fire in the belly of all great stories. Juicy, insightful, and an all-around inspiring essay. 5/5
"Voice," Schwartz -- Short and too-the-point, and yet it resists all attempts at summation. Schwartz takes a complicated and overly-trendy subject -- how writers find their "voice" and what that even means -- and makes it relatable and workable. 5/5
"Mask," Wachtel -- Long, pointless, and over-written. Not only does the author fail to make any relevant or specific points at all, but he even admits as much at the end of the essay. Tries (and fails) to do in 17 pages what the previous essay just did in 6. 0/5
"Weight," Silber -- Brief and forgettable essay on perspective that makes a few interesting comparisons but fails to come to any real conclusions. 3/5
"Form," Havazelet -- Uses Chekov to describe how authors should seduce readers with proper form. He leaves the term "form" purposefully vague, and the essay turns into a deep, analytical discussion of the various symbolisms used in Chekov's stories. Certainly interesting, but not particularly applicable. 3/5
"Inflection," Baxter -- Goes over a few ways to provide emphasis and timing to inanimate text (without resorting to ellipses and italics). A nuts and bolts kind of essay that I agreed with but was also fairly bored by. 2/5
"First and Last," Spark -- An essay on opening and closing lines. The premise could easily turn into an excuse to list a bunch of interesting first and last sentences, but Spark actually leaves you thinking. 4/5
"Memory," Brennan - The author uses a tragic personal event to discuss how literature is an attempt to make sense of the world's random confluence of events. Touching and beautifully written, but also pretty opaque. 3/5
"Spandrels," Boswell - Perhaps my favorite essay in the book, Boswell discusses how fiction evolves from concept to finished product. The idea that any good story contains the seeds for its own proper ornamentation is fascinating and it also gets the creative juices flowing. 5/5
"Scene Beast," Hribal - A decent exploration of how to feed your audience's hunger for something to happen. Hribal discusses ways to sate that "scene beast," sometimes without actual scenes. Clever and fun. 5/5
"Cartographer," Turchi - Intelligent and illuminating essay on both perspective and destination in writing. The subject is vast, but Turchi doesn't labor over any points and uses the topic to both entertain and educate. 5/5
"Jokes," Nelson - Discusses the shape and mechanism of jokes and how that can inspire better writing. Intriguing points, but mostly inert. 3/5
"Ruins," Martone - Talks about ways that authors "ruin" their stories (read: buck trends for the sake of aesthetic principal). Ruins his own essay with lots of over-written meandering. 1/5
"Editors," McIlvoy - Basically a love letter to Stephen Crane and an affectionate analysis of his story, "The Open Boat." Suitably scholastic, but not really useful. 3/5
"Democracy," Medina - A complaint about the trend to nationalize authors and their works. I agree with the author, but can't understand how such an essay can be expected to assist writers. 1/5
"Readers," Grossman - A debate on whether or not it is useful or advisable to consider the audience when writing a piece. An excellent topic for an essay, but it isn't very thoroughly explored here. 3/5
"Truth," Livesey - Analyzing the concept of "true" stories. Clever but pointless essay. 2/5

As usual, Carmela has created an endearing story about the "Princess" who has exciting adventures. Do Princesses Scrape Their Knees? is catchy book with cute rhymes and adorable pictures. For kids, sometimes that's the most entertaining part of a book. The princess in the story is nice to her brother and encourages him to try new things while sometimes demonstrating and falling herself. The moral of the story is good. Keep trying and don't worry if you fail. Be a good sport about it. I liked this story almost as much as Do Princesses Wear Hiking Boots? This is probably my favorite author of story books for little girls.

Get Off Your Knees and Pray: A Woman's Guide to Life-Changing Prayer
Average Reviews:

"Get Off Your Knees And Pray" was an awesome book. Sheila draws from her experiences as a mother and life to share insights that God has given to her about prayer and why it is so important to our Christian Life. Some times we as Christians make prayer more than it is and that can kill our motivation to pray. Sheila, through humor and honesty, challenges our faultily thoughts on the subject and shares how God has changed her perspective. She also talks about why God sometimes does not answer. This is a an awesome book and I would highly recommend it to you! I have been a Sheila Walsh fan since the 80's and so I try to read her books and I can say this one is one of my favorites. Check it out. You will not be sorry! I would also recommend any of her other great books as well.

We know we can talk to God, but it just sounds so important, so intimidating, so religious. We assume that only the very spiritual hear from Him directly. But author Sheila Walsh says "Every sound we utter, every thank you we say, every tear we cry in God's presence is prayer." Get Off Your Knees and Pray is a real woman's guide to real prayer-from understanding the biblical basis for prayer to cultivating a vital personal relationship with God. It is the perfect blend of practical advice, personal stories, and biblical truth to encourage and help you achieve greater intimacy with God through prayer. Prayer is not just a few sentences we say to God while on our knees. It is living out our ongoing, every-moment commitment to God."Sheila steers us away from prayer as formula (say the right things the right way and God responds) and toward prayer as picture-a picture of God's desired relationship. Talking. Listening. Trusting. Living. This volume, warm and witty like its author deserves a spot on every reading calendar."-Max Lucado, best-selling author and minister"No matter what kind of difficulty you have about prayer, this book willhelp. Caressa's Knees Review

Caressa's Knees
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Caressa's Knees is a poignant, beautifully written love story. Kyle is hired as the assistant to Caressa Gallo, a 20-year old cellist and musical genius. Kyle is a down-to-earth boy from Texas, organized, level-headed, and the exact opposite of Miss Gallo. Caressa is a former child prodigy who's life has always been the music. She suffers from incredible guilt over a past experience she had no control over. She has a crippling fear of failure. For Caressa this results in instability, loneliness and refusing to act like the adult she had become. Despite not wanting to admit it, Caressa needs Kyle to ground her in reality.
I enjoyed Caressa's character even with her flaws. Sure, at times she was an emotional wreck, but deep down she was strong to have survived such an exceptional childhood. I could feel her pain and anguish, her overwhelming passion for her music, and the relief she felt when she let Kyle into her guarded world. Now, Kyle wasn't perfect. He was burdened with problems from his past too. He did a few things that had me shaking my head. However, a few imperfections make a hero more compelling, which was certainly the case with Kyle.
The BDSM in this story is rather sensual, and it came very naturally between Kyle and Caressa. I thought that their D/s relationship was amazing. Passionate, personal, and very erotic. It was an intimate experience between them without the larger BDSM scene. Caressa needed Kyle's control, and he willingly gave it to her.
I love Annabel Joseph's writing style. She really knows how to pull a reader into a story with her descriptive language. The scenes of Caressa playing the cello, or her and Kyle's magical experience beside a Texas pond gave me chills. The epilogue had me choked up too, sad the book was ending, yet thrilled at the outcome of their story.

The Creaky Knees Guide Washington: The 100 Best Easy Hikes in the State
Average Reviews:

I'm sorry to give this book such a low rating, but it does not at all fulfill its "creaky knees" walks promise. In fact, one of the walks it recommends is one of the toughest in the area and, besides that, has a road available to drive to the top in place of the walk! It constantly comments that a walk is "tough on knees" - so why is it included in the book then? I am very disappointed, and didn't find many new places to walk without considerable impact on the knees.
