Gait Analysis: Normal and Pathological Function Review

Gait Analysis: Normal and Pathological Function

A previous writers tries to tell us, that gait analysis with our own eyes and understanding is outdated in a high tech world. I disagree. As it is true for many steps in the process of finding the reasons of disorder and disfunction and working on solutions, as medical doctor or as physiotherapist, it is allways the core of real quality if one understands by himself and his education in the field, what some high tech apparatus tries to tell him, sometimes telling it wrong. So giving up all your knowledge and expertise into the hands of a computer, or even showing that you have no interest to get this knowledge in the first place, is a sure way to failure in the medical field. And by the way, gait analysis isnt some dry, boring stuff, in fact, it is fascinating to realize how very important it is to be able to identify the different stages of this very short moment, to find the fitting solution for your therapy. I am just a beginner after completing a first course in gait analysis lead by a german pupil of Jacquelin Perry, and as a doctor in a rehab clinic I can tell you, its very up to date. And talking about the high tech world, who is able to buy a technical system, the hard- and software for gait analysis, for example as a simple practitioner? Better take your time to get some education by experienced gait instructors, read this book and all what you need is in your head and hands, plus eventually a small camera to make a short clip for analysis and presentation on a Monitor.

This textbook is an excellent reference for differential diagnosis of neuro-muscloskeletal problems encountered by the outpatient physical therapist. The book has several informational chapters that review anatomy, physiology, pathology, examination and treatment of the entire spine by anatomical region. The author is a founder faculty member of the North American Institute of Orthopaedic Manual Therapy. This text is excellently referenced. What makes the book even more unique is the case studies presented in an critical analysis format that challenges the reader to test their differential diagnostic skills and treatment approaches. This book is a must read for novice and expert therapists alike.

Manual muscle testing is a cornerstone activity in physical and occupational therapy. Designed to complement, not supplement two existing tomes in the literature, this book presents information that is contained, but not readily accessible in the other two books. Each muscle or muscle group is presented on a two page spread. Each spread is chock full of information, containing a picture of the muscle test, step-by-step instructions for performing the test, the muscle's origin and insertion points, etc.

Pocket Guide to Musculoskeletal Diagnosis (Musculoskeletal Medicine) Review

Pocket Guide to Musculoskeletal Diagnosis (Musculoskeletal Medicine)

This book helped me focus my musculoskeletal exam and make it more effecient. It's a first rate book that ortho docs and GPs alike would benefit from using. GPs and ortho/pm&r/neuro residents may particuarly like the diagnostic work up and treatment sections, which most exam books don't have. I was turned onto this book by a colleague and I'm very grateful that I was. Not many people seem to be using it yet, and I hadn't heard of it, but it's a good find. Other books for musculoskeletal exam that are worth getting are Magee's Orthopedic Physical Assessment (which is a larger book written by a PT that could be used as a reference for various physical exam maneuvers) and, of course, Hoppenfeld's Physical Exam book. Hoppenfeld still sets the standard when it comes to anatomy and biomechanical review, which he weaves nicely into his physical exam.

Musculoskeletal Examination Review

Intially, I didn't like this book, but the more I learned in school, the more I can appreciate this book. It gives complete instructions on ortho testing. Includes all active, passive, resisted ROM's and many special test. Couldn't give this book 5 stars because too many special test are not included, but the exams for the joints are very involved. It is detailed and gives very thorough explanations and directions on testing every joint in the body. It starts with the cervical and works down to the phalanges. There's a section that describes conditions and abnormalites, and what symptoms the affected client/patient will most likely present with. There's a section on gait analysis. There's a section on common trigger point locations and referral patterns, broken down by specific structures. Much easier to locate than on Travell's chart. This books gives more than enough information for a Massage Therapist with a clinical modality. This book will help you be well prepared to work in any hospital or clinical setting as a Therapist. This is not a book for spa or relaxation wellness massages, unless you incorporate some clinical work into your spa massage.
I purchased this book used for very little money. Not sure, but I think the only difference in the newest edition is a chapter on TMJ disorders.

Musculoskeletal Examination is a user-friendly textbook designed for students, physical therapists and physicians. It is uniquely multidisciplinary in its approach, being written by a physiatrist, physical therapist and orthopedist. With tables and boxed features to emphasize and summarize key concepts, and 'sample examination' boxes to highlight and test difficult areas, it is ideal for teaching introductory courses yet detailed enough for professional reference within clinical practice. It includes an easy-to-follow examination process for all the joints and spine, as well as combining biomechanics with physical examination to enhance understanding of function.
This third edition includes more and better anatomy illustrations; over 850 illustrations, x-rays and MRIs are perfect as a quick reference guide, while the detailed descriptions and clinically relevant examples of frequently encountered conditions will help out even the most novice practitioner.
The chapter on basic science, the brief overview of anatomy, and the introductory remarks at the start of each chapter that provide a biomechanical overview of the region featured, all ensure Musculoskeletal Examination will help you gain the understanding necessary to make a correct diagnosis and determine a successful treatment plan for your patients.
Musculoskeletal Examination is ideal for physiotherapists, physiatrists, orthopedists, medical students, practitioners and all those involved in sports medicine and clinical massage.

Olderman has done it again. This is the 3rd book in his series that I have read. I used his neck book and with just correcting my posture I got rid of 80% of my chronic neck pain from the last 26 years. I have already started changing the way I walk and stand, focusing on my glutes and hips. I am confident that the knee pain that I've had from childhood gymnastics will soon disappear. Thanks, Rick, for pain free living - at last!
