There is no denying that the writings of Caroyln Faulkner are controversial. This author is a submissive woman who openly lives in an age play relationship and her writings reflect and explore the often darker sides of submisiveness. Her books range from spanking romance to harsh BDSM stories incorporating both consensual and non-consensual scenes. Although I do not condone non-consensual punishment, which is abuse, there are many strong and independent women with "submissive streaks" who explore that aspect of themselves through reading such stories. Not everyone who reads them is an abuser or a "milktoast miss" who is beaten down by her man, nor are they people condoning, justifying, or supporting the abuse of women. Some people just have that "kink" and explore it through fantasy or consensual (adult) relationships, and Carolyn Faulkner's writings address many of those readers.
I've read many of her books and was actually put off by the negative reviews of this book (as well as the kindle price). I came across it at the Barnes and Noble site for [...], downloaded the free software and figured I'd give it a try since I was interested enough in the sample. The story itself was good and very reflective of a carolyn faulkner book. The female lead was strong and independent with a self acknowledged spanking kink which she quickly regretted during her non-consenual spankings. Personally, I find that contemporary spanking stories cause me to have a gut reaction of "Oh, hell no, I don't think so, slap a retraining order on his ass and throw him the F- out!". A reaction that the heroine even acknowledged and agonized over, knowing that she SHOULD be having but not following through on. Ironically, I've noticed that most of Carolyn's contemporary spanking stories tend to have lower star ratings and harsher reviews than her fantasy/futuristic/historical stories like Talus, Prima, Tria, etc... all of which have much harsher BDSM, humiliation, degredation, and non-consenual scenes, but higher star ratings. Makes me wonder if others react the same way or if those stories are just written for a different audiance? "Submissive Desires" by Faulkner is also contemporary, but is consensual (mostly) with a very strong BDSM content and a high star rating, so maybe it is a difference in reader preference?
Overall, this book was not the best Faulkner book I've ever read, but it wasn't the worst either. I enjoyed it, and did not really see the "cop stalking, enslaving, and abusing" aspect that others mentioned. He didn't hit her (except spank) or abuse her. Every "spanking romance" at some point states that it does not consider "spanking" to be "hitting" or abuse, and if you don't agree with that in reality or fantasy, you probably shouldn't read them. Contemporary romances have to stretch to find reasons to punish (and it always seems to be speeding and seatbelt use and putting one self in danger, yadda yadda yadda, so that makes it a bit pat - no pun intened ;). But I guess, if you enjoy adult spanking romances and don't mind a little non-consenual over the knee action, you may enjoy this one.
