(More customer reviews)This is not really a book review, but a warning that if you're looking for books on Osteopathy, as I was, this has nothing to do with that topic. The science and Medicine of Osteopathy is that which was founded by Andrew Taylor Still, M.D. in 1872. He later, in 1892 founded the first Osteopathic school of medicine in Kirksville, MO. His Osteopathic Medicine was conceived as an alternative to the then horrible medicine of the day which consisted of giving mostly very toxic substances such as mercury to "cure" diseases. He invented a unique form of manipulation, which D.D. Palmer (the founder of Chiropractic) learned part of from him, then went off to another state to declare 2 years later that he had invented Chiropractic. (Chiropractic is a subset of the manipulative techniques of Osteopathic Medicine, and does not include the current ability to write prescriptions and do surgery which Osteopathic Physicians also have.) This book is about Orthopedic surgery! and bones, Osteopathy is about all of medicine and the manipulation (sometimes) of bones, which is why the "osteo" is in the title. Osteopathic Physicians can become Orthopedic Surgeons if they wish, but they are not interchangeable terms. 'Nuf said.
