(More customer reviews)I have to admit, I had never heard of Homer, Alaska before reading Maybelle, Bunny of the North. I was intrigued to find out more. Turns out, Homer is the place where "the land ends and the sea begins." It's noted widely for significant numbers of halibut and it's become a destination spot for many Alaskan visitors. Some visitors head there looking for adventure, while others go for a relaxing getaway.
The main character, Maybelle lives in Homer, Alaska and just like the town's visitors, she looks for adventure and enjoys the relaxing getaway that Homer provides. Maybelle is a high-spirited bunny who acts as a little tour guide and teaches us about the seasons in Homer.
"The winter days are short and cold here. But the summer days are long and sunny."
The easy-to-read text follows Maybelle around the magestic playground as she experiences the soothing aspects of nature and outdoor play and later eases into sleep, dreaming of her adventures at the end of the day. Whether she's scampering in the fireweed, sloshing through the melting snow and ice, searching for special rocks at the beach, or visiting the Two Sisters Bakery, she always has time to offer a friendly "hiya" to her neighbors.
This is a wonderful book to share with young readers to teach them about Alaska, the changing seasons, and the wonderful aspects that the outdoors has to offer. The watercolor illustrations bring Maybelle to life as she takes a hot bath in the sink, chases the geese in the fall, and walks through the fireweed.
