Freestyle Sparring Review

Freestyle Sparring
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I just bought this book, and I think it's a pretty good intro to get the feel of what goes on when sparring, and how to think, what to look for, etc. I recently started a karate class, and I was wondering how I should begin to think about sparring, because it was something completely new to me. This book talks about basic rules, basic strikes, and gives you a clue on what kind of counters work for certain openings. It's probably not very helpful for people who have been sparring a while, but it definitely made me more confident since I haven't done a whole lot of sparring and since I suck at it. But now I know what to look for and how to get better (beyond just practice, practice, practice) and so I think this book was valuable.

The Big Penis Book 3-D Review

The Big Penis Book 3-D
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
First off I have to say that the 3D effect is awesome in this book, easily one of the best books of 3D I've seen. It's a nice size (pardon) book, in good quality like Taschen does.
Also, yes, the appendages here range from a few average, to big, to oh my god, and a couple in the "No Way" range. Still not sure if the guy at the beginning with a member hanging to his knees was real!
Bad part: Ugly and/or seedy guys. OK, a FEW weren't too terrible, but many were sleazy. Many photos were from the 60s or 70s, judging by surroundings, and one nekkid guy was in an 80s Members Only (no pun) type jacket. No "big" deal with the aged photos. Most of the men were either trailer-parked looking, or young guys who'd rather do porn than get a real job! If the object was to turn on women, NOT! Most of us aren't enticed by a scuzzy guy in cowboy hat and trashy pickup truck, Colt 45 on floor, holding his wanger. Dittos for the wife-beater type flashing his stuff while flipping us off. Then there's one shot that looks like they picked up a homeless guy outside the nearest liquor shop and paid him 5 bucks to lie nude on a smelly couch. Oh, there are other ethnicities here, but they made the black men appear menacing and Latinos look like greasy "suave" stereotypes.
Anyway, yes, there are some giant tallywhackers here. And the effect is so real you'll almost smell the booze and tobacco emanating from the models! If you're just in it for the big parts, I'm sure you'll enjoy it. If you want hunks in 3D that you'll want to jump on, not really. I felt like I needed a shot of penicillin after I looked at it.
Like the cover? It's in 3D too and looks very lifelike!

Watch how they follow you around the room It's hard to imagine a book that could beat The Big Penis Bookfor grabbing attention and driving sales, unless it would be those sameunimaginably colossal generative units seen in breathtaking 3-D. Thatpop-up centerfold we joked about adding? In 3-D every page becomes apop-up! This 220-page, 30 by 30 cm special edition includes 96 images from the original book, plus 8 new bonus photos, transformedinto eye-popping 3-Dby Jon Schnitzer and The Brain Factory, the geniuses whipping upspecial effects for filmmakers such as Tim Burton. There is a revisedintroduction, new layout, and two pairs of red/blue anaglyph glasses included, so the book can be shared with a friend, or simply enjoyed alone after the first pair of glasses wears out. Unlike other 3-D pictures you may have seen, the photos in The Big Penis Book 3-Ddo not look distorted when viewed without the glasses. The BrainFactory's technique is so subtle it's hard to even detect the red/bluetint in many of the black and white photos, but when you put on yourglasses the parts of interest leap from the page, not in flat layers asin old-style 3-D, but as thick, fully rounded, touchable contours. That this is a red-hot gift book is a no-brainer. Fromthe dawn of 3-D technology, spears, sticks, guns, and rockets have beenaimed at the audience to demonstrate the realism of the effect. Thespecial effects in The Big Penis Book 3-D are no less convincing.

Motherwell Maternity Fitness Plan Review

Motherwell Maternity Fitness Plan
Average Reviews:

I'm a fitness instructor and I bought this book so I could be well versed on giving modifications to pregnant women that come to my classes. I found the book to be informative and contain a good amount of information beyond the typical "don't lay on your back" type of thing. The book addresses the pregnant athlete, eating well, posture, meditiation, stretching, getting in exercise while doing activities around the house, your skin, hormones, discomforts, etc. The book has some basic sketches/drawings in it which I thought were value added but this is not a picture book.
I found the book to be a great guide and it is recommended by the American Council on Exercise, which is who I have my group exercise certification through and how I originally found out about the book. I look forward to using the information for myself one day. In the meantime, I'm loaning it to one of my trusted newly pregnant students so she can keep fit while pregnant. I highly recommend this one especially if you're only buying one fitness book for pregnancy.

My wife and I started using this book last week. It's full of great information and lots of pictures. My wife was feeling really fat with all the baby weight adn she really wanted to work out a little bit. Not really to get buffed, but to just get her blood flowing and increase her heart rate. We told this to our doctor and she suggested this book. My favorite part of this book is all the workouts are geared to the "couple" and this makes it fun.

All About Bones: An Owner's Manual Review

All About Bones: An Owner's Manual
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is not really a book review, but a warning that if you're looking for books on Osteopathy, as I was, this has nothing to do with that topic. The science and Medicine of Osteopathy is that which was founded by Andrew Taylor Still, M.D. in 1872. He later, in 1892 founded the first Osteopathic school of medicine in Kirksville, MO. His Osteopathic Medicine was conceived as an alternative to the then horrible medicine of the day which consisted of giving mostly very toxic substances such as mercury to "cure" diseases. He invented a unique form of manipulation, which D.D. Palmer (the founder of Chiropractic) learned part of from him, then went off to another state to declare 2 years later that he had invented Chiropractic. (Chiropractic is a subset of the manipulative techniques of Osteopathic Medicine, and does not include the current ability to write prescriptions and do surgery which Osteopathic Physicians also have.) This book is about Orthopedic surgery! and bones, Osteopathy is about all of medicine and the manipulation (sometimes) of bones, which is why the "osteo" is in the title. Osteopathic Physicians can become Orthopedic Surgeons if they wish, but they are not interchangeable terms. 'Nuf said.

I am 50 years old and out of shape. I've been really bummed out since I have had trouble finding some type of exercise I can stick with. Then I found Tara Stiles on youtube, and I got hooked. I always avoided yoga, thinking it was too difficult for someone like me, but she shows even the most out of shape person how to get started and how to feel comfortable with where you are now. I got the book, and it's a wonderful book on it's own, since it gives some really good ideas, tips, and encouragement. Coupled with her youtube videos, it's really all you need to start a yoga practice on your own time, in your own place if that's what you want. (It's good to see the poses in action, and to use the book as a reference for more detail behind the poses.) It also gives information for more advanced poses, so I think it would be great even if you're not a beginner like me. Her enthusiasm is contagious, and if someone can make me enthusiastic about exercise, that's saying something. I have also started to use her meditation and breathing tips, which I probably wouldn't have done in the past either. I think it's great she is bringing yoga to everyone. I'd recommend this book to anyone interested in improving mental and physical health. And she makes it fun.

Stop Osteoarthritis Now: Halting the Baby Boomers' Disease Review

Stop Osteoarthritis Now: Halting the Baby Boomers' Disease
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Natural remedy greatly reduces pain associated with osteoarthritis and fibromyalgia. Books give insight into a natural remedy for arthritis pain--and it's free! Jacksonville, Florida, September 10, 1997: Baby boomers may think they can have it all. But as they age, they might get more than they bargained for, specifically, two debilitating forms of arthritis called osteoarthritis and fibromyalgia. While many have turned to nutritional supplements for the "cure," these are not approved by the FDA and are not substantiated by clinical trials. "There is a natural remedy that many are unaware of," reported Harris H. McIlwain, MD, a Florida-based board certified rheumatologist and gerontologist and coauthor of Stop Osteoarthritis Now! Halting the Baby Boomer's Disease (Simon & Schuster Publishing) and The Fibromyalgia Handbook (Henry Holt and Company). The treatment? A combination of conditioning and strength-training moves that almost anyone can do. "Exercise is the easiest and most guaranteed way to ease pain and stiffness associated with osteoarthritis and fibromyalgia--the two most common forms of arthritis," McIlwain said. With increased years, the chances of getting osteoarthritis increases, as the body becomes less efficient at repairing itself. After age 50, 80 percent of America's population is affected to some degree with osteoarthritis, showing signs of pain and stiffness. Likewise, more than 10 million Americans have fibromyalgia, mostly women ages 40 to 55, which causes deep muscle pain, depression and fatigue. "Imagine what 50 years of use and 200 pounds of weight can do to your muscles and joints," McIlwain said. "But this exercise program will help to maintain a normal weight and keep aging muscles strong and joints lubricated. For fibromyalgia patients, exercise will reduce deep muscle pain, ease depression and promote healing sleep." McIlwain believes in this treatment so strongly that he developed a step-by-step treatment and prevention plan for his patients. The activity-based program he promotes helps to stop these forms of arthritis and gives patients a higher quality of life. "I even see elderly patients who, by staying on this exercise and strength-training program, are able to feel great improvement with reduced pain in just a few weeks," McIlwain contended. "Many have delayed or prevented worsening of arthritis with this plan." Helping the body heal itself with exercise is fully described in McIlwain's latest books, Stop Osteoarthritis Now! Halting the Baby Boomer's Disease and The Fibromyalgia Handbook, as well as in his Winning Series--Winning with Back Pain, Winning with Arthritis, and Winning with Osteoporosis (John Wiley & Sons, Inc.). Winning with Back Pain and Winning with Arthritis. All are now available at major booksellers.

Japanese Sword Drawing : A Sourcebook Review

Japanese Sword Drawing : A Sourcebook
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I was very disappointed once I`d had the chance to examine my copy of Mr Zier`s offering.
To be fair, the manual is presented as a "source book for Iaido students" and not a "how to" book. Never the less I suspect that even longtime practitioners of these forms would be hard pressed to follow the fairly rudimentary instructions. Apart from making it almost impossible to re-enct the forms correctly (possibly intentional, a book is no substitute for a good teacher) it also fails to present a convincing picture of the art. Perhaps footwork diagrams would make it a little easier to follow the action.
The kata are variously performed by Mr Zier and 2 of his students, sadly the form displayed is less than perfect. Am I being overly critical? I don`t think so. I think it reasonable to expect anyone who is presented as "a noted master" to at least display decent posture and to ensure that his representatives do the same. After all if this is a source book then surely the material therin should be technically flawless. Anything less would simply lead to still further degeneration of the art.
Curiously, Mr Zier offers no details of his teachers and his own instruction in the art he now represents to us.
In the final analysis I don`t believe that this book would be of any real use to any practicing students of Iai who are fortunate to have access to a decent certified instructor.
Students of Iai looking for more indepth reading on their art might do well to locate a copy of "Japanese Swordsmanship" by Gordon Warner & Donn F. Draeger.

It's not a secret that the most vital piece of golf equipment is the human body, yet most golfers believe the best ways to lower scores are big-head drivers, premium golf spikes, and other top-of-the-line tools. It's better physical conditioning that allows the pros to hit drives farther than ever, play 72-hole tournaments nearly every week, and rehabilitate even career-threatening injuries. These pros use the workouts prescribed by the fitness consultant and personal fitness trainer for players on both the PGA Tour and Senior PGA Tour, Kelly Blackburn.

In Exercises for Elite Golf Performance, Blackburn provides the same strength and flexibility program the pros use. Whether you're a fitness professional, teaching professional, coach, or a golfer serious about improving your game, this book ensures you're getting the top training program available. It includes 138 illustrated exercises and Blackburn's ""Fitness Analyzer,"" a series of tests golfers use to evaluate their beginning fitness level.

By using Blackburn's ""Elite Golf Performance Program,"" your shoulders will be more flexible and will rotate for a fuller backswing, and your stronger hip muscles will help you by putting more power behind the ball without having to consciously swing harder. This will result in longer, more accurate shots that allow you to club down and essentially shorten any course.

Don't be fooled into thinking new equipment is the only key in turning your golf game around. Use the pros' workouts to get in shape now and see significant results on your scorecard for the rest of your life.

Street Tough, Hard-Core, Anything Goes Street Fighting Fundamentals Review

Street Tough, Hard-Core, Anything Goes Street Fighting Fundamentals
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Phil Giles's "Street Tough" system is a rough-and-tumble system based in part on scientific boxing, sport jujutsu, and MMA. He simply takes these various elements out of the ring and on to the street. The emphasis is on full-contact, live training and realistic drills. He begins with "Fundamental Fighting Concepts", introducing the clinch, the shoot-style takedown, clinching against a wall, weak points of the human anatomy (differentiating between lethal and non-lethal targets), drills for closing the distance vs. punching and kicking, and even a little on pre-emptive striking. The second section is "Street Boxing Concepts", and includes the basic position, how to generate power, and a basic arsenal of tools including both open-hand and fisted techniques, and the headbutt. His explainations of the use of his stance and the medical justification for not excluding the headbutt are worth reading. The third chapter is on "Mobility and Defense". He goes over basic footwork from his stance, and moves on to defensive body movements like the slip, and simple, scientific defensive techniques like the catch and Driscoll parry and Driscoll bridge. He includes examples of their usage and some drills for improving both footwork and defense. Covering almost sixty pages, his chapter on "Ground Fighting" is the longest. He starts off by stating that going to the ground is not desirable most of the time in a streetfight (good advice if I've ever heard it), and then proceeds to discuss the various groundfighting positions. He gives the reader several offensive options for each position, and usually some accompanying drills. He always reminds the reader that "dirty tactics" (biting and gouging) should be utilized whenever possible. He also includes striking for downed opponents, getting back to the feet from the ground, taking down an opponent from the "open guard", and various training drills. My only objection to this section is that, at least in the States, kicking a downed opponent is considered excessive and will most likely result in criminal charges being made. Overall, though, this is a very good book. The only thing that might be missing is basic weapons usage and defense. The techniques are very basic and essential, and the training seems quite practical. They seem very compatible with Jun Fan and BJJ/MMA. I'd recommend it to anyone wanting to learn to fight, either for self-protection or even for sport/MMA.

In this book, Phil Giles provides full-throttle instruction in how to prevail in a street or bar fight, from the proper combat mind-set to the first stand-up blows to when the fight gets down and dirty on the ground. This is some of the most aggressive self-defense training you are ever likely to receive, including the best ways to close with an opponent to smother his attack, how to slam someone up against a wall and really go to work on him, and vicious ground fighting tactics that will make an opponent instantly realize that he made a very bad mistake when he decided to assault you.A series of intense training drills performed at full power and full speed sets the Street Tough program apart from all other self-defense regimens.

Dynamic Kicks: Essentials for Free Fighting (Specialties Series) Review

Dynamic Kicks: Essentials for Free Fighting (Specialties Series)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Mr. Lee's book was one of the first martial arts books I ever bought 18 years ago and one that has found a permanent place in my library.
The best part of this book is the "Techniques Basic To All Kicks" section. I thoroughly enjoyed this section and although I did not agree with all of it, I found it to be very beneficial to anyone learning how to kick.
The sequential pictures for the proper execution of each kick presented were very well done and for the most part quite accurate. I did feel that the picture angle used on some of the kicks could have been done better in order to allow for a better view of each kick.
This book also lacked an application section which would have enhanced the book even more by showing you how each of the kicks was to be applied to an opponent.
This book spends too much time on quantity of kicks, and too little time on the quality of each individual kick. Which seems to be the norm for books dealing with this subject. Thirty-one kicks are explained in this book and the average explanation of each kick is two pages in length, which consists of anywhere from 8 to 14 pictures, and what amounts to 2 to 5 paragraphs of written text on how to perform each kick.
Although the text sections are too short, they are still a lot better than some of the others that I have seen in other kicking books.

Functional Anatomy for Sport and Exercise: Quick Reference Review

Functional Anatomy for Sport and Exercise: Quick Reference
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is an anatomy book with virtually no illustration, and none of the muscles. There is a text description of each joint and its movement, but unless you can easily visualize sentences such as "The primary movement is flexion-extension in the sagittal plane" then this book is probably not for you.
Though "sport and exercise" are in the title, there are no descriptions of multiple joint movements (e.g. military press, side kick, jumping). There are a total of thirteen illustrations; none of which describe muscle insertion or attachment nor joint movement. The "hot topics discussed in detail" are: 1. Tibial stress fractures in runners, 2. The use of foot orthotics in the prevention of injury, 3. Quantitative motion analysis in biomechanics, 4. Anterior cruciate ligament injury in athletes, and 5. Carpal tunnel syndrome in the workplace.
I would recommend "Anatomy of Movement" by Calais-Germaine instead for undergraduate and graduate studies in functional anatomy of the musculo-skeletal system.

Reading this book is much like sitting at the feed of an old, wise coach. You'll find many of the "tricks of the trade" here as well as many excellent photos of racewalkers using good technique in races.
Some of the topics touched upon include: shoes (and how to modify them), various training techniques, judging, and how to race. There are also some informative line diagrams of walkers.
This book is NOT a literary masterpiece; the style is conversational and somewhat inefficient (sounds better when read out loud than it reads). But the density of ideas per page is hard to beat!
