When I read that Mark Chamberlain had revised a 19th Century book on Universalism by Thomas Allin, I was a bit skeptical. My skepticism was baseless, because EVERY KNEE SHALL BOW, THE CASE FOR CHRISTIAN UNIVERSALISM is a seamless blend of two authors across the centuries.
As with virtually all books on Christian Universalism, EVERY KNEE SHALL BOW has a hardy number of Bible quotations which have been used as proof text for Universalism since the earliest days of Christianity. The authors state that eventual salvation for all was the dominant position of Christianity during its first five centuries. Chamberlain and Allin maintain that the faulty theology of Eternal Hell is primarily due to mistranslations and misunderstanding of New Testament Greek. Their chapter on this subject is one of the best explanations I've ever read and, interestingly, one of the most succinct.
This book is a "must-read" for all Universalists and, more importantly, for all those who have had problems with exclusivist and vengeful theologies. EVERY KNEE SHALL BOW is about the loving God of Jesus who wills that none should be lost (Matt 18:14), none should perish (II Pet 3:9), and that all should be saved (I Tim 2:3-6).
