I just read a wonderful book! A different sort of romance, with elements of time travel. I will keep this book and read it again. Moon of Hard Winter isn't just about boy-meets-girl and they fall in love. This story is paced so you are taken between two worlds, two eras, and given an opportunity to visit the history of a terrible incident, Wounded Knee Massacre.

So powerful is her depiction of that time, Mrs. White has captured the essence of calamity and pain by Wounded Knee Creek, and compelled me to find and read more about that day in 1890. I've found her historical references to be spot on! A must for me, being a write-what-you-know enthusiast. Every page turned is a step into the past, or the present, smoothly done.

The characters are strong, believable and compelling, from the hero and heroine to the secondary characters. Revisiting from an earlier book in this series, Thunder Heart and Victoria Abernathy play a pivotal role in the story, while new characters are introduced.

John Six Feathers, depicted both in contemporary and historical time, is a hero of great wisdom and dignity, despite his youth. Though it wasn't stated, I felt him to be in his mid twenties, which is young to be a leader. Faith Donahey, also depicted now and then, is equally wise and though much younger--a strong and vibrant character.

This is a powerful read and one destined for my keeper shelf. I cannot wait for the next book in the series, for there has to be more!

John Six Feathers believes the truth of what happened at Wounded Knee one-hundred and ten years ago has not been told. He wants to see the medals of honor given to soldier's who participated in the slaughter of women and children removed. Faith Donahey believes the truth is more than just an overall picture, and her great-great grandfather deserves the medal of honor he received, despite what the Lakota say. A horrible accident on the highway, a spiritual intervention, and the truth as they knew it becomes the truth as they will tell their children and their grandchildren down through time. This is their story.
